Perfect and laugh-out-loud funny with great performances

You have to see this movie."Mystery Team" is a parody of a phenomenon that was never itself afilm: The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and especially Encyclopedia Brown.They manage to walk the line -- like the first Austin Powers film -- sothat it's neither too wacky so you can't believe it and don't careabout the characters, but not too boring that it's not full of subtleinterplay.The main gag is the innocence of the boys, who are thrust into adultsituations continually. It's all about the acting in this film, andkudos especially to "Donald Glover". Dressing like an outrageous hobo,for example, could come across as really stupid in a film with JimCarrey or Rob Schneider, who play up their roles too much. Donaldmanages to do it consistently.On top of that, there are a several delightful plot twists that youwon't see coming. The film tries to balance the boys basically beingincompetent with allowing them to succeed in a way that isn't toocorny.It's laugh-out-loud funny throughout, a genuine must-see if you likeintelligent edgy comedies. Note, it's not really meant to be a kidsfilm. There's a lot of raunchy humor.I'll give Mystery Team a well-earned 9 out of 10. It just missed a 10because the ending was good but not quite a classic.

Unconventional and Fun

An ambitious, never boring independent comedy with a ton of really funny scenes and a great cast. Buy this DVD or continue being a communist.

Amazing

I really enjoyed this film. Going to see it with DC and Dominic thereprobably did add to the experience and overall enjoyment of the film,so there probably is a slight overrating, but this movie was still verygood.The mix of innocence, immaturity, and real world situation made for awildly entertaining and hilarious movies. My friends and I tend toquote movies we like, and this movie is full of great quotes. Therereally is no down time, and the story progressing consistently on topof it. A perfect mix of bizarre twists and turns, outlandishsituations, and keeping on track with the story to be told. I wasexpecting a funny movie, and was completely blown away. I spentprobably around $50 dollars to see this movie twice in it's weekend inSeattle (with food and ferry ticket), and the experience was well worthit. Treat yourself and rent this once it is out on DVD. Actually buyit, It's worth the money.

Funny Funny Movie

This review is from: Mystery Team (DVD) Mystery Team is a very funny movie starring the entire Derrick Comedy group. If you like Derrick Comedy skits ("Bro Rape" etc.), this movie follows the same humor. Had the pleasure of meeting part of the cast when they premiered the film in my town. Very nice people. Also got to see Donald Glover and D.C. performing separate of the movie, very talented and funny people.

Surprising Quirky Unique Fun Film

***SPOILER FREE REVIEW***If you were a fan of Napoleon Dynamite and the Big Lebowski, odds are you will like this film. It is an atypical, quirky clever comedy that has very good acting, direction, and writing (warning, the film is R rated and will offend your sensibilities if the F-bomb and some quick nudity is too much for you). I had no idea what to really expect and was pleasantly surprised by the movie. You can feel the chemistry between the actors, writers, director, cast, and crew. You can tell this is a passion project and it shows. The film is well done, entertaining, and all the actors (especially the lead) are extremely talented.I don't think this film will ever cross over well into the mainstream, but it should spur a few cults and become a cult classic.Lastly, a lot of negative reviews talk about this being for teenagers or that adults won't like it. I think they completely miss the point and the jokes. They would be the same people who would say Southpark is for teens just because it is a cartoon set in an elementary school. Sure, teens should like it, but it is clearly meant for adults and the humor works (i'm in my 30s FWIW).p.s. Even though I liked the film and think it is a good film, I don't see how you can give it 5 stars. I'd probably rate this movie 3.5 stars but since Amazon hasn't been able to master the half star I gave it 4 stars.

Silly, fun concept with a range of comedic devices

We haven't seen a good kid detective since "Harriet the Spy." No, the"Spy Kids" franchise doesn't count — I'm talking old school. DonaldGlover, D.C. Pierson and Dominic Dierkes put their own grown-up spin onthe genre best exemplified by "Encyclopedia Brown" with their comedy"Mystery Team," a coming-of-age story infused with mystery and plentyof slapstick.Jason (Glover), Duncan (Pierson) and Charlie (Dierkes) are three highschool seniors who never grew out of being kid detectives, thusspending time tracking down first graders for schoolyard bullying orneighborhood high jinks instead of chasing after girls. They don'tswear, they're oblivious to sexual references and their street smartsare non-existent. When a young girl comes to their booth and pays thema dime to find out who killed her parents, they suddenly realize theyhave an opportunity to prove that they're still relevant to thecommunity that used to adore them.After ruling out all possible sixth grade suspects, the Mystery Teameventually finds itself a promising lead thanks to the town hobo. Soon,of course, they find themselves in way over their heads. Pushed to thelimit, the case not only tests their courage, but also theirfriendship.From a humor perspective, there's a lot going on. Between eachcharacter's idiosyncrasies, the team's collective childish ignoranceand some R-rated slapstick, "Mystery Team" has its own comedic styledistilled from these various styles. Some of its wickedly funny whileother jokes (such as Charlie's bone-headed nature) become redundant. From a talent perspective, Glover leads the way. Jason is supposed tobe a master of disguise. All of his disguises are completely ridiculousand horribly misconstrued. For example, when the team's suspects headto a "gentleman's club," they attempt to get in wearing top hats,sporting monocles and speaking with accents. Glover not only has fungoing over the top with his disguises, but he works in some awkwardhumor and some sarcasm as well. He should evolve into a mainstreamcomedic force in the not-too-distant future.At times, "Mystery Team" is hard to take seriously. The child-likeignorance brings about some funny moments, but to presume that theseguys are completely oblivious to this point in their lives seems odd.There comes a point where the humor of the main characters should nottrump how believable and relatable they are as people. Except for acouple scenes involving Jason's folks, their parents aren't involved.Considering real parents would not have condoned such childish behaviorat their age, it would've been nice for them to be a bit more involved.However, the script does handle the more dramatic coming-of-ageelements rather well and you'll like the characters regardless."Mystery Team" has a good time playing with its clever concept and assuch it's a joy to watch. Great movie

I've seen this movie, and I will not lie to you: it's awesome. The cast is full of awesome comedians seen on NBC, Coemdy Central, etc. I don't know what's on the extras, but I can't wait to see what they cooked up.

Awesome Movie

I saw this movie in Seattle this weekend. I was expecting it to be good, but it completely blew me away. I thought it was the funniest movie of 2009, and that is coming from a Broken Lizard(Slammin' Salmon) and Zach Galifianankis fan. I even went back a second night to see it again, and it was just as good. Lots of my friends want to go see it, so I might go back next weekend for a third time.

Needed to be just a tad funnier

A comedy with a good concept, but it just doesn't quite deliver in thelaugh department. Donald Glover, D.C. Pierson and Dominic Dierkes playthree 18 year-old boys who peaked when they were seven years old. Amaster of disguise, a boy genius and a tough kid, together they formedthe Mystery Team, who would solve petty, childish mysteries around townfor a dime a pop. They were beloved at the time, but when they're stillat it 11 years later, it's kind of sad. One day a little girl bringsthem a grown-up mystery: her parents were murdered. It's out of theirjurisdiction (they're usually occupied with finding out who stuck theirfinger in an old lady's boysenberry pie), but, pressured to grow up,they take the case. The film gets some good mileage out of thesejuveniles getting mixed up in strip clubs and drug deals. And it hasits share of fun bits and good lines. But, in the end, it all comesdown to the fact that it's never funny enough. It just feels like thefilm misses too many opportunities. There's a sequence where two of thekids reveal to the third that they do indeed intend to go to collegenext year that demonstrates that the film could have been much more.

It's hilarious and their sketch comedy humor translates very well into a full length film. I encourage you to support what these guys do and buy this movie. It's worth every cent.

Surprisingly Good Offbeat Film

In the Spirit of Napoleon Dynamite and the Big Lebowski, this film is a surprising treasure. It is off the beaten path, you don't know quite what to make of it, but if you sit back and suspend your preconcieved notions of how you think a movie should go, you will have a good time.There is a lot of talent in this film, great acting, great script, great storytelling. It will probably be a decent cult film but I doubt it will crossover to the mainstream :(All in all, I really liked the film, you can tell they had a great time making it. The lead actor is extremely talented and I expect to see him in more films. Overall, I was impressed with all the actors. Great job guys!!!

A mystery worth solving

*Contains Spoilers*When one hears of a film with completely unrecognizable actors and anunreasonable plot, we usually tend to ignore the project. But this hadsomething different to offer.Basically it is a story very similar to the scooby-doo cartoons (notthe film). There are 3 nerdy looking guys who vow to solve any mysterythat comes their way. Their projects are very silly and childish andtheir tip is usually from an even dumber member of the cast.Their mundane lifestyle is changed with a murder taking place in theneighbourhood. It allows them to go on a "scintillating" adventurewhich ultimately ends with the perpetrators getting caught in what canonly be described as a weird circumstance.This is very much an episode of Scoobe-Doo without the ghosts andScooby. It manages to capture the aura of the cartoon with the quirkylaughters and the paradox involved (something the scooby doo moviefailed to do I must add) and perhaps that is what elevated this from anaverage to a step higher.Verdict: Will make you go back to days of Scooby and the mysterymachine and must be watched if one wants to go there.

if you are a derrick comedy fan you'll love this!!

man, after the DVD came out the rating here went way down, I don'tthink many people who saw this movie knew anything about Derrick Comedyor just missed the point of it all together.this isn't a family movie, the R rating should tell you that from theget go. It's a movie about 3 losers who have been solving mysteriessince they were kids, but get thrown into reality when they decide totake on the ridiculous case of solving a murder. The three guys fromDerrick Comedy are hysterical..every line they say is so silly andridiculous..and the antics they get into...you'll either be amused byit or totally hate it.Also, this movie is very similar to what you see in Derrick Comedy'sskits. That same humor and silliness in the skits is in this movie...you'll either love it or hate it. as a fan of the guys of DerrickComedy I thought it was hilarious and just enjoyed it for what it was;but I think some people might miss the boat on this one.

But after the Nickelodeon TV show feeling, theopening scene gives way to an angry child spouting obscenities and theMystery Team reveals a unique brand of hilarity.Jason (Donald Glover) is the ringleader and master of disguises for theMystery Team, a group of high school students who have failed tooutgrow their fascination with solving little mysteries, includinglocating lost objects and tattling on children who sneak into movies.At the age of seven, their gig was popular – but now as high schoolseniors, they're the laughing stock of the class. Jason's sidekicks areDuncan (D.C. Awful

My husband insisted to see a good comedy so we make the fatal error totrust that Mystery Team is maybe not a good movie but a nice one. Wellwe were bored to death; when the movie come finally to the end was themost pleasant moment. The script is boring, the acting is bad, the jokes are just lame. Itruly can't see where is the funny part of this movie. Maybe for the children who are seven years old this movie can beamusing but for the grown-ups it hasn't any catch. Is just another badcomedy-parody teenager movie.As for actors, DC Pierson, aka Duncan is the only one who has a littletalent.

HILARIOUS!

These former fart joke writing, comedic sketch making actors really show their stuff in this genius idea of these kid detectives continuing their service as they graduate from high school. Donald Glover, (known for Community) really shows his acting skills as he acts as an innocent kid, protecting the world from sex, drugs, and swear words. If you like Derrick Comedy, you'll love their feature length movie "The Mystery Team."All-Star quotes:"The stage is wet and smells like cold cuts!""Chocolate milk just taste better than regular milk.""Dad, mom wants me to go to a party with girls; isn't that gross?"

Mystery Team is Awesome

I've seen this movie three times - I saw the rough cut about two years ago because I know the writers and creators, and I saw it two more times in theaters. I love, love, love this movie. It's hilarious, fun, and suspenseful! The comedian cameos are abundant, and it's really well-written. GO, DERRICK!
