I thought it was great!

This movie has to be in the to ten classic examples of a great 80sscary/corny/funny/stylish movie it screams the 80s. The acting wasn'tbad could of been better but it all worked out. Fun twist to vampiresby being able to go out during the day and not having vampires evilpeople. The cars are awesome looking too I have not seen a VW Rabbitconvertible in a long time nor a good looking BMW that they wreckedhalfway during the movie which looked better than my first car. Ithought it was interesting that it was filmed in Houston and not in LAlike most films are. In conclusion I gave this film a 8/10 because itwas limitedly released on DVD and very hard to find.

Teen Vampires with Humor

This review is from: My Best Friend is a Vampire (The Lost Collection) (DVD) This is a very silly and funny movie about a High School student who becomes a vampire. No drama like one finds in Twilight, just a kid mastering the skills, and only occasionally being tempted to bite his girlfriend. I loved it as a kid, and it is still quite enjoyable.

Campy fun at its best!!!!

There are two kinds of films that I like. One, films that are good (TheGodfather,The Empire Strikes Back, Traffic) and Two, films that arecampy but entertaining (My Best Friend Is A Vampire, Evil Dead 2,Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls). This film, if you've seen five minutesof it, belongs to the second category. Granted, there's plenty ofmediocre fare I like too (Kiss of Death, G.I. Jane, The Day AfterTomorrow), but there's hardly anything more fun than a crazy movie thatdoesn't take itself too seriously like this and Better Off Dead. This is one of the most entertaining things I have ever seen despite ithaving every cliché and '80s trend (music, fashion)in the book. When Ibabysat my little brother and sister during the summer of '00, wewatched our recording of this from Comedy Central just about every day.We tried doing it with other good movies such as Ferris Bueller's DayOff and Dead Poet's Society, but it just didn't work the same becausethis movie maybe has the best replay value outside of Star Wars and TheGodfather that I've ever seen. Despite its campiness, it isentertaining throughout and never lags. The only downside is the badacting of RSL's girlfriend and best friend in the movie. Everyone elsefrom the surprisingly star studded cast (Kathey Bates, David Warner,Rene Auborjonis) is top notch. This is a guilty pleasure at itsabsolute best! If you take this movie with a grain of salt, you WILLenjoy it!

Surely a teenager is too young to be long in the tooth.

Young Jeremy Capello (Robert Sean Leonard) is a typical 1980s good guy.A bit shy, a bit quiet and a bit desperate to lose his virginity. Ifonly so that it will shut up his best friend, Ralph (Evan Mirand). Heends up spending some time in the arms of an older woman who then biteshis neck and, as the title hints at, turns him into a vampire. Which isa bit of a shame, as he now wants to date Darla Blake (Cheryl Pollak)and suddenly dealing with a major allergy to garlic and pointy teethcould severely cramp his style. Fellow vampire, Modoc (ReneAuberjonois), tries to offer advice and make the transition smootherfor him while two hapless vampire hunters (played by David Warner andPaul Wilson) try to offer him a stake.Written by Tab Murphy and directed by Jimmy Huston, this movie is bestremembered for it's cast than those behind the scenes. The script, andexecution of the material, isn't all that bad but it's the performancesthat make this movie as enjoyable as it is.It's quite similar to Once Bitten (the teen vamp comedy with Jim Carreyin the lead role) but treads with a slightly gentler step, mixing thecomedy in with less overt whackiness.Robert Sean Leonard makes for a pleasant lead and the supporting castare all pretty good, with Evan Mirand providing the most entertainmentas the best friend who just manages to avoid being annoying. CherylPollak does just fine as the woman initially hiding her beauty behind*gasp, shock* a pair of spectacles. This is light entertainment, well done but with nothing to make itunmissable. Things, perhaps inevitably, get a bit silly at the end butit's in line with the good-natured way that the whole bloodsuckingbusiness is dealt with throughout so quite forgivable, if slightlyanti-climactic.

The Vampire Hunting Business Bites!

My Best Friend is a Vampire follows a long line of fun films aboutsupernatural occurences disrupting an already awkward period of teenagedevelopment just as it did in My Mom's a Werewolf (teenager's mother turnsinto a werewolf), My Boyfriend's Back (girlfriend's dead boyfriend risesfrom the grave), and I Was a Teenaged Zombie (teenager's friends turnszombie to fight zombie drug dealer), and the list goes on.This was surprisingly a very entertaining film about a young boy who, uponalmost losing his virginity to a strange older woman is a strange old house,is given the bite that turns him into a vampire. Now a professor and hisidiot assistant, vampire hunters, want to kill the vampire that is on theloose. The only problem is, they've mistaken his friend as their undeadtarget. The funniest parts of the movie involve a lot of great slapstick humorbetween Ralph, the vampire's best friend, and the vampire hunters who seemto follow him at every turn, although he can't figure out why. Even moreamusing is the vampire teenager learning to cope with being a vampire thanksto the help of an older man, an English vampire mentor. With the help ofdark glasses and a large stock of pigs blood, maybe life as a teenagedvampire won't be all that bad. It just makes shaving a little hard when youcan't get your reflection in the bathroom mirror. And even more amusing thanthat is the misconception that the vampire's parents have about him. Iwould've guessed that they would have thought their little Johnny was ondope, but their mistake is actually much funnier. Plus, you have a pretty good soundtrack to boot with the dominating songbeing Timbuk 3's "The Future's So Bright."If this is your forte of films, the 80s horror/comedies, you should likelyenjoy this one. It doesn't bite!

This wraps up 80's teen movies up

I couldn't believe the rating this movie got here so I had to write, thiswas a movie that opitimised every aspect of the eighties (including reallybad dress sense)from the troubled/angst teenager, to the mad thinks he'sdoing-good scientist and put it all togother in a fun relaxing andromanticteenage movie(no shlock horror typical of the era). I honestly think thatanyone sits down and watches this movie for what it was and is "a rom/com"they will enjoy, even now when it looks a bit dated.......Honestly go rentbuy scrape this movie up or out of the cupboard and put your feet up grabsome popcorn or beer or possibly pigs bloods (sorry couldn't help areference to the movie) and enjoy.................

5 stars for the movie - but 1 for the DVD...

Hadn't seen this in years. Was surprised to find out that, if anything, I enjoyed it more now than back when it came out.Filled with funny sight gags and a legitimate sense of breezy fun; this movie stands on it's own and isn't just recommended as a nostalgia piece. It's one of the better vampire comedies ever made (up there with "The Fearless Vampire Killers" and "Love at First Bite"). Recommended above other forays into the genre; such as "Once Bitten".Unfortunately, this is a no-frills release so all you get here is the movie - and it looks like it was taken from a Laserdisk (or equivalent) master. Yeah - it's definitely better than watching the VHS - but not much.

A cheesy but fun vampire movie

This review is from: My Best Friend is a Vampire (The Lost Collection) (DVD) It had been years since I'd seen this movie, but I remembered it as one that was silly and fun. I'm glad I own it. It's an off-the-beaten path teen movie for younger GenXers.

Believe It or Not, This is My Favorite Vampire Flick

I saw this film for the first time at around 2am on some random cable network. I liked it so much, I had to buy it. I've seen it around a hundred times, and it never loses anything.Jeremy Capello has a bit of a problem. He goes on a grocery delivery and meets a beautiful woman who invites him to come back to her house at midnight. A teenage boy with hormones all-a-rage wouldn't turn her down, that's for sure! He meets her, and she bites his neck just before a madman breaks the door down and runs him out.The next day, he is approached by a man who claims that the woman was a vampire, and that he would soon be turning himself. Of course, Jeremy doesn't believe his new 'vampire advisor', until he starts to notice the changes himself. This film is an 80's comedy, and is filled with great 80's music. The acting is surprisingly good, even though the film is full of no-name actors (except for one or two). Don't sit down expecting Oscar material and you might just enjoy this one. I personally can't wait until a DVD is for sale...if that ever happens.

good 1980s comedy/horror movie

Before i watched this movie on a really old video tape i thought thatthis movie would be a bit crap and this movie was made in 1988 so ithought that it would be so cheesy but then i watched it and it turnedout to be quiet good and not that cheesy. This movie is not that funnybut i laughed a few times when i watched this movie. The plot for thismovie is a simple plot about how a teenage boy got bitten bye a womanvampire and he starts to turn into a vampire meanwhile 2 vampirehunters think his friend is a vampire so they are trying to kill himand i like the plot for this movie.Over all if u are a teenager i think u will like this movie and myrating for this movie is six out of 10.

Funny Vampires

This review is from: My Best Friend is a Vampire (The Lost Collection) (DVD) One of my favorite vampire movies of all time. It's lighthearted and funny. The actors all play it straight forward - particularly Fannie Flagg - I'm real surprised that there wasn't a sequel or 2.

kayebtoyz 2012-05-10 06:56:04

how far would you go for a high school friend?

this review has nothing to do with the acting abilities, direction, costumes, or anything technical...it's all about the feelings and what itmeant to me "way back then"....almost 10 years after high school i still remember thismovie.....i caught this movie on one on AMC (i can't believe i'm that old)... butitwas on cable TV when i was in high school and i thought it was a creativespin on the B-vamp movies, and it cracked me up. So one day when one ofthecheerleaders and a guy who would become the VP for student council at thelocal college (i went there, too) were discussing 90201 i asked if theyhadseen this movie the night before.... at first they thought that i wasmaking it up (i guess that it was my reputation for being stoned and/ormaking bad jokes). but for a long time whenever the previous night'stelevision scheduled programs were discussed one of them always turned tomeand said something like, "we're not going to have any of the vampire s***today...."...to their defense, they thought that i was making up thismovie, they weren't being mean....especially after one of them actually saw themovie and i pulled the ethnic card on us all (we are all from differentracial backgrounds and i asked what they would do if their best friendwasdifferent, and by the way, weren't these parents cool? so they thoughtthathe was gay, they still went up against the cops for him) i know that thisreekes of total cheese, but then again, didn't high school?anyway, i've seen so many vampire movies and i had read all of the annericebooks (hell, i saw this before interview with the vampire came out as amovie....) but this was still a different view on an old story...i cracked my ass up!!after all these years it still brings up some things that i didn't thinkabout then, such as....how my parents would react if they didn't thinkthati was "normal".... and that the reactions of the parents in this moviereminded me of the dad in "better off dead"......and i wonder if thosepeople from high school say this and thought about me...After all, isn't that some of what movies are about? where you werewhenyou saw....oh... well... that may be music, my bad....but connie andangel,i thought about you when i saw this movie again tonight...to everyone else, this movie is worth watching if you like B-movies,vampiremovies, and comedies.

One of the best Teenage Vampire flicks ever

This review is from: My Best Friend is a Vampire (The Lost Collection) (DVD) I have loved this movie from the first time I saw it - while everyone else liked that one with Jim Carey in it, which I just thought was silly, I was watching this one (and "Rockula," which I hope will someday be put out in DVD format).Jeremy and Ralph are best friends - but while Ralph apparently has no trouble asking out women, Jeremy is shy around the fairer gender, despite the fact that the beautiful cheerleader Candy has the hots for him. But Jeremy is strangely drawn to Darla Blake - a baritone sax player in the band and not the type of girl that usually leads to the sorts of dreams that Jeremy has been having about her.Things start to get strange when Jeremy's dream about Darla is interrupted by a strange woman. Even weirder, the next day when out delivering groceries, Jeremy discovers this strange woman is the new delivery recipient on his grocery route. After her cat has scratched his finger, she first licks, then sucks on his finger and invites him back to her house that night at midnight ... I'm sure you can see where this is going. Needless to say, there is a crazed vampire killer with his bumbling assistant; a vampire "counselor" sent to help Jeremy adjust to his new life (played by the very talented Rene Aberjonois of "Deep Space Nine" fame) and, of course, a bevy of beautiful vampire women. It is also (as far as I can tell) the very first movie in which we see a very young Kathy Bates. If you enjoy lighter vampire fare, this is definitely the movie for you. It is just a lot of fun, very 80s, great soundtrack. I hope you'll give this a chance, if you weren't already aware of it.

The teen romantic vampire movie craze of the 80's peaked with this one.

Granted I only know of one other movie that fits into this genre andthat is the Jim Carrey movie "Once Bitten". This one though is betterthan that one as it is just a bit funnier and has a better and morelikable plot to it. This one has a teen going to the house of a girlfor what he thinks is going to be a one night stand kind of thing, asit turns out though the person he is seeing is a vampire and he is sooninfected and must now feast on blood. Thankfully, it does not have tobe human blood as a rather friendly vampire teaches him the ways ofliving a rather nice existence as a vampire without having to drink theblood of humans. Unfortuanately, a sort of Van Helsing type hunter ofvampires who saw him and his friend at the girl's house where he wasbitten, however, he thinks it is the guy's friend and not him that hasbeen bitten and turned into a vampire. The guy also is having girltrouble as he even tries to use vampire hypnotism to get the girl helikes. All this makes for an very funny comedy that really is ratherlighthearted. So while not perfect, it makes for a fun film to watch.

Good Movie

"My Best Friend is a Vampire" is a good movie. A different spin onvampires than say "Buffy"-which I also like.I says vampires get a bad press, compounder by the fact that there aresome vampires who behave bad. The tamale vampire who bites Jeremy, changing him into a vampire can be called a bad vampire. The parallels with gay people are obvious. Just like there are badvampires, there are bad gay people. Jeremys' parents, quite reasonably, think he is gay. They do not turn on him. They may not be that pleasedabout it, but they accept what they see as their son being. They aremore than pleased when Jeremy introduces his new girlfriend. Maybe theythink he tried one path, now is trying another, but it's quite clear heis their son, no matter what. One thing. I'm certain they are convinced Jeremy is having sex withModoc. I think most parents would, even if they accept that their childis gay, have problems with him or her getting on with an older adult.

One of the better takes on serious vamipirism

This film is a heartwarming feature that treats vampirism like Juvenile Diabetes. People who catch this communicable disease are only subject to lifestyle changes and drinking blood is to be thought of as "Taking your vitamins". And it isn't a sappy teenage love story either. Moreso it delivers a quality message about the power of friendship when friends turn out, by way of their physical being or their ethical character, to be less than ideal. Also this film turns away from most 80's films as it openly mocks the objectification of women in cinema as those that attempt such actions in this film often have the tables turned against them. All in all, I recommend this film for anyone who would enjoy a light-hearted look at vampires instead of the gory and gruesome look given to them by modern media.
