Somewhat Bizarre, but quite Enjoyable

Mr. Popper (Carrey) inherits 6-penquins and becomes attached. Thishelps him with his ex-wife (Gugino) and the kids. Yes, somewhat bizarre, but it works. I thought most of the penguinswere CGI, but that is not the case in many instances. There is adisclaimer in the beginning of the movie that says no penguins werehurt during filming, but that Jim Carrey was bitten many, many timesand he deserved that. Not sure what that means as I got the impressionthat Carrey did enjoy performing in this movie. Funny? You bet. It had some moments. Was it funny because of JimCarrey? No, when he goes into his berserk mode he is not funny(sometimes in a subtle mode he is….but not often); was it funnywatching the penguins behave in his apartment that is now transformedinto an arctic zone for them? Not really, although there were someclever moments. Was it when Mr. Popper talked to the penguins and theyseemed to understand him? Sometimes funny here. How about when thepenguins walked behind him outside in single file. No, not reallyalthough that was cute. Well, when? When? When the penguins invade the Guggenheim Museum as I found myselflaughing out loud. Those scenes were pure gold. There were other scenesthat were funny to me, but they will be more than funny for kidswatching. In fact, the kids will find just about everything funny. And,that's a good thing. Of course, the man (Gregg) from Penguin Control tries to take thepenguins away from Mr. Popper, but Popper seems to prevail. AngelaLansbury (as Mrs. Van Gundy) makes a cherished performance as the ownerof Tavern on the Green and who will not sell it to Popper and hisemployers. And, then there is Kent (Krumholtz) as the neighbor who isannoyed with Popper and the Penguins. Krumholtz was funny as he hasgood timing. Those are the other subplots. Over all a very enjoyable movie with some good laughs along the way.The kids will love it. Good family movie. (7/10)Violence: No. Sex: No. Nudity: No. Language: No.

Jim Carrey is back to pure Comedy

This Movie is an amazing movie . Jim Carrey should win best Comedy this year for this movie because he really acts like Ace Ventura again but with penguins .He has got back to being very very hysterical.Theres ascene in this movie he brushes his teeth like an idiot which is helarious and he makes very funny faces in this movie and does his crazy humor the old Jim Carrey style but with two kids.Although even though theres two kid in this movie does not mean its a childrens movie .Its actually not a kids movie .So dont take your kids too see this film or theyll imitate it.It should not be approved as a family film so dont listen to the paper. It should not be rated PG. It should be rated PG13.So dont listen to the paper or there reviews .I am the best reviewer that sees every movie and I know what Im talking about because I know whats good .Listen to me.Although its an amazing movie for adults or teens.I LOved This Movie .GO see it. its hysterical.

Cute...

Honestly...this is a Mediocre movie. Jim Carey is hilarious in this movie. They gave him a good script to work with. The thing about this movie is that the bad guy in this movie is the good guy. The way it goes is, Jim Carey (Mr. Popper) gets one Peguin from his dad (who has recently passed away) and the one that he gets is cute. He soon gets another crate with 5 more penguins in there. So he ends up with 6 penguins in his posession. Mr. Popper is divorced and he gets to spend only the weekends with his kids. His kids comeover and they see the penguins and start going all gung-ho about them and you just have the feeling that this isn't going to end well. Mr. Popper is trying to get rid of these peguins, he calls 4 animal services to try to get rid of them before this happens and they all simply cannot take the penguins away until the zoo guy comes by. The zoo man trys to reason with Mr. Popper but all in vein. I personally was not the biggest fan of the kids that he had. They weren't really annoying it's just that they weren't really great kids. They didn't make me really root for them. To be honest they were a bit bratty. Mr. Popper has a young boy who is always stating when he screws up. And his children don't really treat him with best amount of respect. They always say "Hey Popper, what have you been doing lately???" Yeah don't treat him with too much respect, he might cry. Anyway, the other HUGE flaws that there are have to be the penguins. They are cute but at the same time they get on my nerves ALOT. There is Stinky, Loudy, and Nimrod. It's not even funny in my opinion what these guys do. Watching a penguin fart was not funny in my opinion, Loudy was really loud. I'm not even kidding. I covered my ears once actually. And Nimrod was simply pointless, just running around and running into stuff. Final flaw, the poop. There are a few penguin poop jokes in here that I (of course) did not enjoy. I am shedding aloooot of negative commentary on this aren't I? Well you know what? This is a kids movie. Not so much of an average family movie in my opinion concerning all of that nasty stuff that I mentioned. I have to say though...this was a very entertaining movie. There are alot of jokes that are very funny. I have come down a bit too hard on this movie. I enjoyed it. Enough said. See it with a friend or some family. I think that this is a fun MATINEE movie for the familu.

A Fun Family Movie

Now, this won't go down on my list of favorite movies, but it was a good family movie. Jim Carrey was cast perfectly as Tom Popper, his assistant was funny, and the movie did get quite a few laughs out of both the adults and children. The visual effects were notable, the penguins looking very realistic. All in all, it wasn't the best movie ever. For no particular reason, it just didn't go above and beyond like some movies do. But it was good; a movie well worth the time and money for a typical family like mine, a movie that we all enjoyed.

Funny but very very empty

I'd hate to say that as a Jim Carrey fan that I really don't care for his newest role... but I don't care for him in this film. I was hoping the film would at least feel like a comedy but it ended up falling flat on it's fins.Short: DO NOT WATCH! YOUR KIDS WOULD PROBABLY HATE PENGUINS AFTER THIS FILM. I'm serious folks, this ones a beaker.

Christian_Dimartino 2012-05-19 21:35:17

It's not great, but it's harmless fun, and Jim Carrey never disappoints me.

A good family comedy is a hard thing to come by nowadays. There are waytoo many Alvin and the Chipmunks and Yogi Bears out there. 2011 was abad year for those. We had Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked(thetitle sounds like torture) and The Smurfs, both film's trailers made mewant to slit me wrists. But there was a good one, believe it or not.In my opinion, Jim Carrey can do no wrong(besides The Majestic). And hecan always pull through, despite what the critics think. Mr. Popper'sPenguins is the best family comedy i've seen in maybe years. Because Ifeel like it's something that kids and adults alike could find funny, despite the fart and poo jokes. But hey, it's a family movie.Carrey once again shows his sweet charm as Thom Popper, a real estateguy who's late father sends him a few rambunctious penguins as hisinheritance. At first, he wants them gone, but the longer he keepsthem, the closer he grows to them. Even if they turn his life upsidedown.I like a sweet family movie that is just, well, sweet. Such as thisyear's The Muppets(that movie was probably better but I still like thisone). MPP is harmless, family fun, and it's funny. Granted, there arefart and poo jokes, but aren't those in every kids movie? There aremoments that are dumb. And there is one thing involving Popper and hisex wife(Carla Guino) that, well, shouldn't be. But I didn't really takethose as flaws. It just made me think a little. It's still sweetthough.Carrey looked like he had fun making this one, and I had fun watchingit. It's not as good as his performance in last year's I love youPhillip Morris, but he still has that charm that he's had since AceVentura all those many years ago. It just makes me sad that more peopleare going to see Chipwrecked than this, which is actually good. But Iactually knew it would be. Did I like it as a movie, or did I like itbecause Carrey, my hero, is in it? Both.B

Why don't I like Jim Carrey? Everyone else seems to!

Now don't get me wrong,I DID "quite" like Jim Carrey at the start ofhis career,in films such as Peggy Sue got Married,Pink Cadillac,AceVentura,& The Mask. However, when he progressed into Liar Liar,TheTruman Show and Bruce Almighty,I stopped going out of may way to seehis movies. I hoped he might change in I Love you Phillip Morris, butsadly he didn't.He alternated between the standard Jim Carrey and quitea serious actor(which both in one movie was confusing and annoying)Hewas out-acted completely by Ewan McGregor. Now (having seen only thetrailer) he has reverted to type with Mr Popper. If you like amanic, out of control, irritating actor(who to me is not even a wee bitfunny) the you are welcome to him. As I say is it only me that findshim annoying and over the top?

predictable American stuff

The story is about this guy whose father has lived practically all hislife in the north pole(so there's already a father-son relationshipthat doesn't really work). One day the guy receives a penguin in themail which is followed by about 4 penguins more. At the start hedoesn't like them and he cares more about his job. He has kids and anex- wife(who he has an amazingly good relationship with), and the kidsare super spoiled and they actually want the penguins living in theflat, (that of course is impossible. There is a man that says this inthe movie and they try to make him into the bad guy).So the man that's called Popper(the protagonist played by Jim Carrey)turns his flat into a place covered with ice (that's also impossiblebecause the flat would eventually collapse). The end was the most horrible American happy family ending I have everseen. Jim Carrey does his usual acting that never changes. (The bestmovie with Jim Carrey, in which he gets a bit out of character, is "thenumber 23").So if I had to tell you whether to see this penguins movie or not, Iwould definitely tell you no.

From 4th grade teacher. Not like book, but not bad

I used to read the book every year with my class when I was a 4th grade teacher. The movie was virtually NOTHING like the book of the same name, but that doesn't necessarily mean the movie was bad. Jim Carrey was ok, and reminded me of his character in "Liar Liar" at times. The kids and wife character were ok. The penguins had a few cute moments. The writers only came up with a few really clever items, and relied a lot on previously used formulas to write the story, but... I can't complain too much, because the movie pretty much kept my attention. I wouldn't want to see it again, but it was G or PG material that a person could take kids to. The characters were sympathetic and the penguins were sometimes fun. It's not a great movie, but it was reasonable family fun. Don't expect a lot, but you could do worse.
