Jackie's Worst!!!

The worst movie Jackie Chan has ever made!!! Sammo Hong's cameo is stupid too. Does Sammo trying to be like spike lee by making a cameo in a movie just because he directs it!?! A definite must DO WITHOUT!!!

A Nice Guy!

As an Aussie, I cringe slightly whenever I see this movie in English! The Australian actors are SO bad - especially the gang leader of the Demons (who thankfully gets killed early!) By the way, is he Australian? He sounded English to me! This aside, the action and stunts are great - typical crazy Jackie, very fast paced. The cameo with Sammo Hung on the bicycle is also very funny. I must mention that I have also seen the Chinese version of this movie. Believe it or not it is so much better to hear the Canontese dubbing and read the English subs! Covers up the bad acting by the Aussies. The music surprisingly in the Cantonese version is also better, very tense and adds some atmosphere to the story of Miki's kidnapping. I think when the movie was released in the West they wanted to reclassify it for general release, so the movie was "watered down" considerably. Some quite violent scenes involving the women actors getting beaten up were deleted, especially one scene with Miki and Richard Norton, the bad guy. Also, one scene where Jackie was fighting the Demons in the van is a scream but was deleted. Jackie actually BITES one of the bad guys in an unmentionable place on the chest! Ouch!! Good movie for Jackie fans who don't like reading subtitles, but I think the Chinese version is better.

Thin on plot but fat with exciting stunts.

Thin on plot and fat with exciting stunts, Jackie Chan's "Mr. Nice Guy"is more like a speedy carnival ride than a movie. Chan plays atelevision chef who gets mixed up with a female reporter with anincriminating videotape that drug lords are after. Along the way JackieChan has his prerequisite close calls and death defying stunts mixedwith his affable humor. All the stunts are good ones and there's aset-piece that requires Chan to escape his enemy in an unfinishedbuilding where all the blue doors are already installed that is myfavorite. It's quite a farce having people opening and closing doors inpursuit and escape and never knowing who or what's behind the nextdoor. One extended scene is a guilty pleasure for me and involves Chancommandeering a large earth moving vehicle and wreaking havoc with it.When I say large, I mean LARGE. The tires alone must be 12 feet tall inand of themselves. It's pretty cool to see the devastation this vehicleincurs. A fun film. Had the plot itself been a bit more thickened myrating would've been higher.

Jackie Chan vs Richard Norton

Jackie Chan plays quintessential fall guy for a woman in distress. Henevertheless, braves his way to save his girl, and saves two othersrisking his life.Jackie (Jackie Chan) is a cooking show host. One day he runs intoDiana, a woman who's running from gangs to deliver VHS tape containingincriminating evidence. He saves her for the time being, but the thugsare still after her. They show up at her apartment, but the tape hasbeen swapped in Jackie's car. Now everyone is after Jackie to recoverthe tape. The thugs show up at Jackie's charity food show. It's now achase in the mall, and in the streets of Melbourne between Jackie, andthe thugs. Diane sneaks into Jackie's apartment looking for the tape. But the thugs show up too, and now they have to balance across the roofto make the getaway. The thugs bombs Jackie's apartment, and now he hasto stay with his friend Lakisha. Thugs who came looking for the tape atLakisha's place takes Miki and tells Jackie to get the tape ready forexchange. There're lot of holes in this plot. Like how did the thugs find outwhere Lakisha lives, or even if you get the tape back, how do you knowthat a copy hasn't been made ? So this has to be taken as Jackie Chanentertainment, and not get too serious about the plot. This one though somehow didn't look like Jackie Chan movie. Maybebecause there aren't enough twists and turn in the story. Maybe becausethere're only three Asians in the entire movie including Sammo. Thisand "Who am I ?" that was made around the same time has this feel toit. Maybe it was the right timing for him to to do Rush Hour and break intoHollywood again. He seems to be running out of space to do new thingsin this movie.

No More Mr. Nice Guy

Mr. Nice Guy (aka No More Mr. Nice Guy) was the third film Jackie didin Hong Kong after the success from Rumble in the Bronx and the firstfilm that was directed by fellow brother Sammo Hung since 1987'sDragons Forever. Jackie was happy about this reunion since they werenot on good terms for several years.Jackie stars as a chef, with prestigious martial art ability, who ispart of a chef troupe in Melbourne Australia with Baggio (Barny Otto)and Lakeisha (Karen McLymont). He accidentally intervenes between afleeing reporter named Diana (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick who had areoccurring role in NYPD Blue) who has an incriminating tape and tworival criminal organizations who are on that video. She thenaccidentally switches tapes with one of his cooking shows in Jackie'scar when they were fleeing the mob. Some well-documented goofs with thetape are: the tape is the ubiquitous VHS standard (which a cameraperson would not use) and when the tape is shown it displays the sameomnipresent footage that the film had (including the multi-angle cutsand close-ups.) The two criminal organizations include a bad acting,Rumble in the Bronx rip-of, gang of thugs who do not resemble criminalsnamed the Demons and an Australian mob led by the cigar munching, overacting, coke-dealing, neat freak, tie slapping Giancarlo (RichardNorton) who happens to be a proficient martial artist too. There isanimosity between the two groups because the Demons stole cocaine fromthe mob. The campyness of the criminals worked for me in Rumble in theBronx but they annoyed me in this film, probably because of theoverabundance of drama. Though I do enjoy when they (though mostlyJackie Chan's stunt team) get beat up by Jackie. For fun I try to spotJackie's stunt team during the fight scenes. It is harder to find themin this film (good editing) than in Armour of God's Amazon womenfighting scene.Jackie's fiancé Miki (Miki Lee a Taiwanese singer) arrives to stay withJackie for awhile. She is a bit jealous of his friendship with Lakeishaand she is eventually held hostage by both the Demons. They want thetape and he wants her. They broker a deal to meet at the Golden Gardenconstruction site for the exchange after the first attempted barterwent wrong because of stupid cops. However, the mob will be there too. This leads up to the awesome penultimate fight scene. There is more plot to this film but it only gets in the way of thefilm's good points: the stunts and fight scenes. While, I feel SammoHung's directing skills have regressed a bit such as the overuse ofslow motion – for everything, Sammo still directs Jackie quite well inthis reunion. The action sequences are set up marvelously especiallythe Golden Garden sequence. There is a maze of doors where Jackiealmost falls out hanging by a door knob (another influence by thesilent greats such as Lloyd and Keaton that Jackie loves) and anotherfinely choreographed scene where he fights with everything from awooden grate, pipe, water hose, and wheel barrow. Fight scenes such asthis and the ending stunt sequence (involving a large constructionvehicle) are must watches for any action fan.Much of the acting was bad, there were unnecessary dramatic devices,Norton's fighting skills were not as used effectively as when he workedwith Jackie in City Hunter, and it had many similarities with Rumble inthe Bronx. However, there is enough comedy and action scenes to makethis a fun film to watch (though it does seem to lose a bit of lusterafter multiple watches and I have not seen the longer running Hong Kongversion of this film which has about 7 to 8 minutes of additionalfootage.) There is also a good cameo appearance with the colorful SammoHung as a bicyclist too and the painful "outtakes" at the end of thefilm. Now is that enough to enjoy a film – of course. Note: this wasthe first of Chan's films to be shot almost entirely in English andduring the making of it Jackie got to put his prints at Mann's ChineseTheater on Hollywood Boulevard.

Jackie Chan has done it again

MR. NICE GUY has got to be one of Jackie's best, and I know I've said that about several of his movies, but NICE GUY can live up to this boast without a single doubt. One reason for this is the fact that it is actually an almost literally non-stop action-comedy. The movie is low on dialouge, since it is Jackie's first movie filmed in English (though still produced in Hong Kong) and it simply zips along amazingly quickly from one fantastic action scene to another. NICE GUY opens with Jackie as Jackie, a TV celebrity chef in Melbourne, Australia. Meanwhile, drug lord Giancarlo (Richard Norton) trying to buy back some cocaine from a rival gang. It isn't long before he realizes that Diana (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick) has video taped him in the act, and soon, she is on the run from Giancarlo's meanies. She encounters Jackie, and through a series of bizarre mismatches, both Diana and Giancarlo believe Jackie has the tape. It's actually wound up in the hands of his half-brother Romeo's (Vince Poletto) kids. Jackie must now recover the tape and save his girlfriend Miki (Miki Lee), whose been kidnapped by Giancarlo.Okay, the plot is very mush secondary to the action and the comedy in NICE GUY, a bit more so than in some of Jackie's other movies. But, in some ways, this is superior to many of his other martial arts movies. It's up there with RUSH HOUR 1 and 2, SHANGHAI NOON, all of the POLICE STORY films, as well as his ARMOUR OF GOD and DRUNKEN MASTER masterpieces. It's also quite a surprise that Jackie didn't direct this one. Nope, he left that responsibilty to his longtime friend, the portly chopsocker Sammo Hung. You know him even if you don't think you do. He was Jackie's co-star in his fantastic PROJECT A, and he was even in the Bruce Lee classic, ENTER THE DRAGON, where he played the plump opponent in the opening scene. But Hung was evidently not content with remaining behind the camera in NICE GUY. He has a brief cameo as the nosey bicycler. But it's still Jackie's movie. It has some fantastic scenes of acrobatics and kung fu action. One takes place on a horse carriage, another inside of a moving van, but by far, the best in NICE GUY is the one at the construction site, which starts with some funny business involving all the doors, then becomes a huge martial arts battle. NICE GUY belongs in the Jackie Chan hall of fame, and if you have any interest in seeing one of Jackie's more recent kung fu-comedies, this is a great place to start.

More super stunts!

This was a movie that was created solely to feature more of Jackie Chan'sincredible stunts and martial arts.Very nice Melbourne scenery and asusual,a great effort from Chan. The martial arts was definitely toned downand the target audience of this movie was the U.S. which like more of thecomedy fighting/stunts from Chan as of now as they are slowly adjusting toadmiring an Asian and one who is not a U.S. citizen at that.Chan understandshow to compromise and that to be big in the west,he must not take himselftoo seriously so as not to intimidate the very racially sensitive U.S.market.He plans to win the U.S. over by displaying his charming/clowningside of himself first, then later on,feature more seriousness in hischaracters and in his fighting sequences. This movie was a compromise betweenthe Hong Kong style screenplay/directing techniques and the watered downU.S. version of Chan that seemed to connect with the U.S. audience verywell. This was definitely an experimental movie to find out if a low budgetmovie, with Hong Kong direction/screenplay,western stylescenery(closer, cheaper Australia),low budget western typeactors(Australians),very simple plot and story, combined with spectacularChan stunts and the watered down version of Chan's Kung-Fu will sell verywell. If it does, they would probably make more movies with this formula.Theresults later on they would find out is that they could not get away withtoo little as they had hoped. It would be bad for Chan's credibility in thelong run, relegating him into a cheap B movie action star.Chan has money andhe is right now chasing his dream of being an Asian iconic legend in theranks of Wayne,Stallone.Eastwood,Scwarzenegger and Lee.He knows credibilitycomes with movies with more substance than this movie. Thus the betterproduction movies that followed this one later on.Still, this movie is worththe watch due to the truly spectacular feats Chan does time and againshowing no signs of middle age at all......

Jackie is back in Action!!!

Jackie is back with this latest movie. Jackie has lots of fight scenes andlots of very very cool stunts. This film shows that Jackie knows whatcomedyis. The scene were Jackie fight's Richard Norton was good but a little slowand it was really quick not like in City Hunter were Jackie has to go oneonone with Richard Norton again. Also this film had Bradley James Allan for asmall part but nothing much. If you really want to see Bradley James Allanfight with Jackie go rent Gorgeous he fights 2 times with Jackie in thatfilm. "Sammo Hung Kam-Bo" has directed this film and it shows. He also hadasmall role as a cyclist not much action through. Also this film is writtenby Edward Tang who made Rumble in the Bronx which is a classic. So go rentthis movie for action, comedy, stunts, and Jackie.

Not Jackie's Best

This movie literally came with my pizza. THAT's how low the productionvalue is. The plot is more of the usual. Chan plays the "nice guy" whois thrown into violent circumstances alongside three female co-stars.The bad guys are the usual hodgepodge of street punks and organizedcriminals. All in all, it's best to remember this is a comedy."Mr. Nice Guy" brings bad acting to a whole new level. You know thosehorrible voices you hear in dubbed Chinese movies? Well, apparentlyChan's crew is so comfortable working with those voice actors that theyare now casting them as live actors too. So you hear the usual awfulvoices, but then you notice that the lips are actually in synch. There is only one fight sequence that is innovative and entertaining. As is frequently the case with Chan's movies, there is also a lengthyaction scene involving huge vehicles and explosions. I'm not sure whatthe infatuation is with heavy, moving machinery, but those scenesalways seem boring and mundane compared to the fist-flying,high-kicking martial arts.I worry about the future of Chan, Sammo Hung, and rest of theirproduction crew. They take great pride in their stunts andchoreography, but their methods may soon become outdated. Chan performsvery difficult, dangerous stunts, but all too often, the outcomedoesn't appear very dazzling, or its impact is lessened by poor cameraangles and overuse of slow-motion. While CGI effects used to be farinferior to live action, the distinction is gradually fading. If Chanwants to stay ahead, he's going to have to constantly innovate andprovide much more original material than "Mr. Nice Guy."Finally, I docked this movie one extra point because the DVD startedwith a preview of "Son of the Mask," and it was one of those previewsthat you cannot skip.

IT'S A SUPERB COOL FILM

I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH STUNTS DONE BY JACKIE. HE HAS GIVEN ALMOST A 200% FOR THIS MOVIE.

Good stunts, funny momments

Not one of his best, but certainly one of his funniest. Mr Nice guy is a good JC time killer since it is full of plenty of high kicking and funny one-liners (An example is when Jackie hides in a Chinese vendor's ice cream truck. When one of the gangsters approches he has the vendor if he's see a chinese man around the park, and the vendor responds "Yeah. Me."). Another funny momment is the cameo of Sammo Hung as a cycling pedestrian who sticks his nose in the van where Jackie is getting beaten up. As usual, the stunts (like the cool horse carriage scene) take precedence over the plot (TV Chef gets caught up in gang fight). Also, the actors play second bannana to JC's performance (Richard Norton has the most notable credentials, while Vince Paletto was on All My Children for a brief time). That doesn't matter since it still is entertaining, but I would take Police Story or First Strike over this.

The rise and fall of Jackie Chan

For many years Jackie Chan had been a hero to me. Then came Rumble inthe Bronx and he was a hero to everyone. Rumble in the Bronx was agreat film I thought. Not Jackies best but great at what it was. Itturned out that was to be his last really great film.A few movies later this came out. Jackies first all English speakingfilm. As long as you don't count The Protector and Big Brawl.I have to say I wasn't looking forward too seeing this anyway. Thestory didn't sound too impressive from the start. And it isn't. Itsvery convoluted. A TV chef who seems to have super hero capabilities? The acting is really bad (look out for some famous Astralian soap starsthough). But its the action that really fails. Anytime some good actionis about to take place the image turns into this blurry slow motiontechnique that makes it hard to see whats going on.Okay some great moments along the way. And a brilliant cameo from SammoHung. But is it really worth it?

Rob Deschenes 2012-04-27 01:59:22

Jackie Chan being his usual self.

Jackie Chan plays a TV cook ending up being at the wrong place at thewrongtime. How Jackie handles everything is what's best about this movie andsomeof the stunts are done with great humor. It drags down A LOT towards theend, but it's still kept up thanks to Jackie's clever moves and a certainold friend of his that shows up. The movie's great, no bones about it andaworthwhile rent if you're into fun action. Movies like these make youwonder: Why does Jackie always do things the hard way? While you'rewatchingthem, you enjoy it too much to even care.

One of Jackies Best

With nearly non-stop action and thrills Jackie Chan's "Mr. Nice Guy" is probably without a doubt one of Jackie Chan's BEST films ever, featuring Chan's trademarked ultra-choreographed but jaw-dropping and awe-inspiring just plain AWESOME action sequences (including the trademarked end-of-film outtakes).THE MOVIE: A TV cook Chan unwittingly stumbles into the middle of a drug-related murder between Australian mobsters and a street gang when he saves the life of a woman and unknowingly comes into possession of her incriminating tape. From the get-go it's an all-out adventure ride setting the standard for the amount of action per frame as Jackie battles the mob while trying to save his girlfriend and his other friends.Notable Scenes:1.The Horse and Carriage Battle Scene2.The Warehouse With Many Doors Fight Scene3.The Ending Battle Which Puts Rumble In The Bronx's Hovercraft scene to shame!!THE DVD FEATURES:The DVD is a little sparse on special features, but it does contain a few great extras including a pretty detailed bio (more so than the Rumble in the Bronx DVD) and filmography of Jackie Chan as well as the film's theatrical trailer. Also included are selected scenes from some of Jackie's other films (Rush Hour, Rumble In The Bronx, First Strike, and Police Story all on sale from New Line Cinema).THE VERDICT:Action movie/martial arts film fans will love this movie. Fans of Jackie Chan will probably rate this toward the top of his movies as the action standards this film set are just off the charts!!! The action, as well as the story, are solid. New fans of Chan will also love this film and its mind-boggling action sequences. The DVD features, while a bit sparse compared to more recent DVD releases, are alright and are in fact a little better than his other releases with New Line. Overall, whether you rent, borrow or purchase this DVD/movie, it is worth a watch.Highest Recommendation.

JACKIE CHAN SAVES THE AUSTRALIAN FILM INDUSTRY!

Jackie Chan is an absolute legend who has saved this film from beingabsolutely pathetic.Made in Melbourne, MR NICE GUY or Yatgo ho yan had some poor acting and alittle bit of a silly plot. But this was typical Australian acting and the plot was simple foreverybodyto understand.Jackie Chan plays as "JACKIE", a cooking genius who lives in Melbourne,Victoria, Australia that is super at Martial Arts. There are side splitting stunts, great action and "JACKIE" is hilarious onmore than one occasion.Dare I say it, AUSTRALIA...YOU HAVE A WINNER!(THANKS JACKIE CHAN!)**/*** - VERY GOOD (* - OK & *** - EXCELLENT)

Formulaic but Fun Martial Arts Flick

Jackie Chan plays a famous TV chef ("Jackie"). One day on his way todinner at his assistant's (Karen McLymont) house, Jackie runs into afemale TV reporter (Gabrielle Fitzpatrick) who is running away from tworuthless gangs who want to take from her a video tape of a murder theyhave committed. Jackie defends her and becomes a target. Once one ofthe gangs kidnaps Jackie's girlfriend (Miki Lee), the standard Chanformula kicks in and ... no more Mr. Nice Guy.Chan fans know what to expect out of Samo Hung-directed Jackie Chanfilms - simple but sympathetic heroes, very unpleasant antagonists, astandard martial arts plot with some new twists and a great deal ofamazing action sequences featuring Chan's incredible physical talent.Mr. Nice Guy delivers nicely on this formula and Hung even throws in avery amusing directoral cameo. Filmed in Los Angeles and Australia (inorder to allow Chan to do his own stunts), Mr Nice Guy makes great useof setting - Chan's best stunts and some of the wildest actionsequences take place on construction sets in Melbourne. Some of theacting is a little below par, but Chan, Lee, Fitzpatrick and Nortoncontribute quite a lot to the film.Recommended for Chan fans, Martial Arts fans - also a good introductionto Jackie Chan for those who are not familiar.

A Real Stinker!

I am a big fan of martial arts movies. Even the really "bad" ones, thatcritics criticize, I usually like.Although, this movie started off well, in it's opening fight sequence. Ireally could not keep myself awake shortly after!Check out, First Strike; now that's a good and entertaining Hong Kongproduced Jackie Chan movie!Other than that, I have to say his American movies are thebest!

Quality Jackie

This was good Jackie. Some incredible fast paced action scenes and a cheesy plot that you just have to laugh at. The fighting is some of Jackie's best and this is a much better buy then Rumble in the Bronx or Supercop.
