Moulin Rouge!

Christian, a young wannabe Bohemian poet living in 1899 Paris, defies his father by joining the colorfully diverse clique inhabiting the dark, fantastical underworld of Paris now legendary Moulin Rouge. In this seedy but glamorous haven of sex, drugs and newly-discovered electricity, the poet-innocent finds himself plunged into a passionate but ultimately tragic love affair with Satine, the clubs highest paid star and the citys most famous courtesan. Their romance is played out against the infamous club - a meeting place of high life and low, where slumming aristocrats and the fashionably rich mingled with workers, artists, Bohemians, actresses and courtesans.

prepare to go back to the turn of the century

***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***This has been the first movie to impress me on all accounts since I firstsaw "Breakfast At Tiffanys". Basicaly, it starts out with a young writer,Christian (played to perfection by the addorable Ewan McGregor), moves toParis in 1899. He quickly gets invovled in a group of actors, with thelovable John Leguizamo playing Toulouse Lautrec. He then quickly findshimself quickly into the Moulin Rogue and meets Satine, played by NicoleKidman. Which results in a hilarous first meeting, she finds that he isnotthe Duke that she is suppose to be "impressing". This quickly leaves to apassionate secret love affair between Christian and Satine, behind theDuke's, who is also taken by Satine and wants her to himself, back. Butlittle to any of them know, is that Satine is slowly dieing.I've been waiting for years for a good musical to come along, and it looksas if i finally got my wish. A GREAT soundtrack, tho i have one complaint, where's the version of Madonna's "Like A Virgin" on the soundtrack? 10outof 10 stars easily. I'm going to be completly disappointed if it doesn'tgetalteast 4 oscars nods. This is a must see hit movie of the summer.

Totally Suprising! Amazingingly Creative and Exciting!

Wow! That is the first thing I said after seeing this movie for the firsttime. I actually had to be forced to watch this because I thought "Stupidmusical, it will be boring" Well boy was I wrong. This movie takes youonan emotional rollercoaster ride. On moment you are laughing hystaricallyand then next you could be crying. Both Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregorsurprised me with their beautiful voice and of course acted wonderfully. But the real prize should go to Baz Lurman the director. He beautifullytold this story by creatively using fun modern music, weaving the imagestogether masterfully. This film is the definition of excellent direction.I am thoroughly in awe of Baz Lurman. PS-- he was robbed of the Oscar!anda nomination for that matter.

So much better than you think...

This movie is so much better (direction, production) than Romeo andJuliet. While it may appear as blasphemy, I would rank the story right up therewithR & J. I know, I know....So shoot me.Ewan McGregor blew me away with his singing and Nicole Kidman was bothravishing and vulnerable. An amazing soundtrack (excluding Geetchee, geetchee).

Love it, love it, love it!

I love the songs, the over the top acting, the colours, EwanMcGregor...I highly recommend everyone to see it even if you hate it, just so youcan have an opinion on it - i've been trying to get my boyfriend towatch it for ages! One of the loveliest, heart warming, heartbreakingfilms that you'll ever see and sing along to.If you love musicals like me then this film is Definitely for you.Best to watch it when your wide awake though as it can be hard tofollow! One of the all time greats.See it!

A beautiful, lovely, amazing film about "truth, beauty, freedom, but above all, love"!

I must admit, before I first saw this movie (my friend Jessica dragged me tothe theatre) I was utterly skeptical (this was before the Oscar nods andraving reviews). How could a musical about a nightspot with a stale, oldplot be any good? In more ways than I could have dreamed. The acting is spectacular, as are the cast's voices. Ewan MacGregor andNicole Kidman sing and act beautifully; their chemistry jumps right off thescreen! MacGregor has one of the loveliest voices I've ever heard. Listeningto him belt out "Your Song" is amazing (not to mention the fact that hissmile makes me melt). How did he not get an Oscar nomination?!? JimBroadbent (as the exuberant Harold Zidler, the "king" of the Moulin Rouge)is fantastic in his supporting role, and Richard Roxburgh as the villianousDuke is perfect for the part. Baz Luhrmann is an utter genius. A genius! It has so many of his speciallittle touches that make the film unique and original. I can think of fewother directors who could pull this off with as much grace as he did. It wasa cinematic crime that he was robbed of an Oscar nomination. (This movierecieved far less Oscar recognition than it deserved). The story may have been used many times in the art of film, but Luhrmann andCraig Pearce (his co-writer) make it stunningly unique. It's heartbreakingyet beautiful. There are few other movies that touch the heart such as this. The music is spectacular! Reinventing many songs such as "Roxanne", "YourSong", and "Like a Virgin" (though I must admit I found that sequence a bitunnecessary) was delightful to watch, and I especially loved the "ElephantLove Medley" where Christian sings a mixture of classic love songs including"All You Need is Love", "Love Lifts Us Up Where We Belong", "Just OneNight", and "I Will Always Love You" in attempt to convince Satine that they"could be heroes forever and ever". The few originals of the movie (such asSatine's hopeful melody "One Day I'll Fly Away" and the wonderful, beautifully lyrical "Come What May") are absolutely FANTASTIC!All in all, this movie is stunning. This movie is colourful. This movie isbeautiful. This movie is heartbreaking. This movie is hopeful. This movie isquietly happy. This movie is more than just a movie. It is a secret longingto be loved, and loved alone that we all have inside us, which whether wehave it boldly out in the open, like Christian; or silently locked in awayinside so that barely even we know, like Satine, is undoubtedly there. Seethis movie. You won't regret it. the greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved inreturn....

Can I have Egg, Bacon, Spam and Sausage without the Spam?

and you'll get the same reply when watching Moulin Rouge:Eugh!Let's see.. ooh ooh I know. Let's have Obi Wan Kenobi sing "The Sound ofMusic" as if he invented it, and have The Pest there to think it was thegreatest invention. This movie predates the Sound of Music setting-wise, soI guess they felt they could get away with it and all. Then we'll send olBen over to a nightclub with women who don't barely resemble the scummytrashy women of the actual Moulin Rouge and while we're at it, let's havethem and some old guys in suits blasphemize "Lady Marmelide" and "SmellsLike Teen Spirit". And for fun let's put an extraordinaliy fat red-facedbloke who can fly around and rap like a thug. Geez guys, sounds like a real winner to me. Not. Kurt Cobain is turning inhis coffin.

Luhrmann as a mainstream alternative

Transcending obvious generic labelling 'Moulin Rouge' appears part romancepart musical part elaborate extravaganza. Although one avoids drawingparallels with avant-garde and Surrealism movements, Luhrmann's influencesare certainly apparent. Opening reels feel like wafting discordant dreams, while in contrast stylistic flourishes and carton-esque sound effects soabundant in the opening act are thankfully sacrificed in the films tragicheart renching conclusion. Expanding his acting range yet further McGregor moves away from themonotonous performance offered in 'Star Wars', his Christian is flawed andvulnerable yet willing to sacrifice sanity and reason in the name of love.Kidman's Satine is the bipolar opposite fearful of emotional involvementlooking initially at love on a superficial basis; based solely on lust andpossession. Of course despite the worldly honest performances from the twoleads the true genius behind the film of course belongs to Luhrmann. Hismusic video aesthetic feel is akin to 'Strictly Ballroom', drawing uponconfidence and experience achieved in his involvement in 'La Boheme'.Certainly a period film mutated by post-modern pop music references, 'MoulinRouge's exuberance and energy appears fresh and imaginative. With itshallucinatory visuals, sumptuous sets and fanatic set pieces, Luhrmann onceagain confirms his stance as a mainstream alternative.

A Truly Great Cinematic Marvel!

Yea, after reading some of the recent comments, it's obvious that noteveryone likes or gives this movie more than a passing glance then blows itoff as rubbish or silly or nonsense. But then again I wouldn't want to watchwhat they consider a great cinematic masterpiece, which in my opinion, isexactly what this movie is!From the great scenery and costumes to the uplifting and inventive use ofmodern music in a bygone era of Paris circa 1900, this movie had it all.Sure, it took a little patience in the beginning because it went againstwhat we are used to in movies. At first you are bombarded with music, dancing and sometimes bombastic dialouge but once it got to the actual storyof a love that could not be, it was as good as any romance novel could hopefor. It had Shakespearean elements of a tragic love story much in the styleof Romeo and Juliet. Does Satine run off with the writer or marry theDuke(whom she despises) just to save the theatre and all it's actors whoreally are just a big group of misfits but family in every sense of theword. In those days, actors were not celebrities, like they are today, theywere more like circus carneys or gypsies. Moulin Rouge, with all the twistsand turns and pulling at the emotions of both lead actors, succeeds as theaudience is drawn into their love story and feel every emotion as though itwere their own! You fall in love with the leads and your heart aches fortheir doomed love. In the end, you feel the loss as deeply as anything you would feel in reallife. I left the theatre in tears and i don't usually cry aboutanything!I say, watch it again and tell me if it isn't a powerful movie that ranks upthier with the best of what Hollywood has produced in the past 30 years ormore! I could see Audrey Hepburn in the lead had this movie been shot in the50's or early 60's and Marlon Brando or James Dean as the writer who fallsmadly in love with Satine. If you didn't like the movie, well I say your heart is hard and jaded andyou are just plain boring!2 Thumbs Waaaaaaaaaaaay UP!I rank it as one of my top 5 favorites of all time and could watch MoulinRouge every year for the rest of my life and love it like the firsttime!

The movie has so much heart that the poor overworked organ explodes in every scene.

cwpnewpaltz 2012-04-30 12:42:18

Bizarre, boring, pretentious, derivative and a real drag

Was this the worst movie I've ever seen? Well, let's see, I'm pretty sureit's the only "1" I've ever assigned; I almost gagged when they broke inwith "The Sound of Music" right there at the beginning, and it went downhillfrom there. So bad I decided to read the Wall St. Journal while this thingplayed on the DVD through my elaborate sound system. I think that if you saw"Cabaret" you saw this movie without having to bother. The Golden GlobeAwards must be crazy.

orangecatdancing 2012-04-29 17:22:14

gets better every time you watch it

The first time I saw "moulin rouge", I liked it well enough, But witheach subsequent viewing it has grown and grown until it hasbecome one of my favourite films of all time. This is not a film thatyou can be cynical about - you just have to let the emotions and thevisuals wash over you and envelop you in its magical charms.Ewen McGregor and Nicole Kidman are perfect in their roles, andhave such a realistic chemistry between them that you will forgettheir real-life personas and simply see them as Satine andChristian, starcrossed lovers in the most exciting nightclub at theclosing of the nineteenth century.Baz Luhrmann returns to the themes displayed in his previousworks, "Strictly Ballroom" and "Romeo and Juliet". And although allthree are wildly different, they also exist in the sameLuhrmann-esque universe of the wildly hyperkinetic and tragicallybaroque. So much so they have been rechristened "the red curtaintrilogy".Lurhmann films are about emotion, and succeed with the viewer ifthey let themselves open to it. So enjoy "moulin rouge !" for what itis - a beautiful and colourful ode to an opulent era seen throughmodern eyes.

Powerful, evocative - perfect

I don't like musicals, I wasn't expecting to like this movie. But I can'tfault it - it's so powerful, it hit me like a sledgehammer and I was intears at the end - there's no more than a handful of movies that have everdone this to me. Do yourself a favour and see it.

mmmoooooooo0 2012-04-26 13:32:20

Moulin Rouge is a genius creation combining modern savvy and classical romance giving this one-of-a kind musical its diverse appeal. Plainly stated: SPECTACULAR SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This has become my all time favorite movie from the start! The first fiveminutes leaves you hooked and bedazzled with the lively, colorful Bohemianantics. The modern music turned show tunes really helps you to relate tothestory and gives this film its universal appeal. A genius work from ageniusmind, this movie can addict viewers. Soon you'll find yourself singingalongtoo! If you've got the least bit of a Bohemian spirit in you, you'll lovethis movie!!!! :)

You need to invent words to describe it.

It's very rare for me to rate a movie 10/10. I usually give this onlyto movies which are almost flawless, and I haven't found many. This movie is perfect. There are few films you like or think OK, and there are ones you needto wonder at, if you'd have to achieve what they did, how could you dothat? How did they do it? I think, this movie sets a standard no movieever will repeat. The difference is there, in between, the differencewhich separates the professionals who are brilliant in their work, puteverything they have, work hard and achieve great things, and thegeniuses. This is something I couldn't imagine, couldn't invent. And Ican only bow down with humility and thank the creators for the chancethat I could see it.I feel it silly to list everything, to say it was great, becauseeverything was great. Pacing, effects, music, acting, singing, editing,directing,... I would give an Oscar for everything there's one and forthe rest I'd make new categories.Thank you Baz Luhrman. You made me feel richer inside.

Why is this movie in the top 250?

I had very low expectations on this movie, and I was still largelydisappointment. That, folks, is not good. Neither is thismovie.I'll start with the good stuff. There are actually some nice moments in thebeginning of the film. Of course one of the worst things is in the beginningtoo, but I'm getting to that. Some of the scenes, like when Christian firstmeets the "Spectacular, spectacular"-gang is rather fun. The scene wherethey explain the play to the duke is nice too. But that's aboutit. Can someone explain to me, what it is causing the editor to not being ableto show more than 1/100th of a second at a time of footage in most of themovie. WHY does he necessarily have to switch through all the characters allthe time? Let me watch one character speak, and then the other, THANK YOU! Alot of cuts works in action sequences in action movies. It helps the actionthere. In perfectly ORDINARY talk scenes, they have to have cut to differentdirections ALL THE TIME. What is it supposed to create? Is it supposed to be"cool"? Personally, it just gives me headache and takes away myconcentration on the plot. When you write a script to a movie, there are things you leave out for theaudience so there will be a reason to watch to the end of the film. This, movie, I must remind myself that that's what it is, reveals the ending rightin the beginning! I suppose you could consider this a spoiler, but since itso clearly pointed out even before the real narrative starts, I can't seewhy I shouldn't tell it. In comparison, consider how good The Usual Suspectsor Citizen Kane would be if one found out how it was going to end in thebeginning. From the point where Zidler or whatever his name is, signs the contract, youknow exactly how the movie is going to proceed. This is somewhere in themiddle. It drags on, scene after scene. I sat there in the end, wishing itwould end in a somewhat original or at least surprising way. But no, I getnothing. Except fear.Fear that it is movies like this which people are going to promote and seein the future. Movies with no plot, horrible script, very weird selectionwhich characters to develop, appalling editing and these anachronistic songsall the time. Ok, so they're clearly modern songs, but people singing aboutsmog around the shift of the century? No thanks.Granted a big part of the musical is the music, they still need a story tocapture one's interest. You can't make a movie with special effects, we allknow this, but likewise you can't make a good musical without a somewhatintriguing plot. The Nightmare Before Christmas, Sound of Music, even SouthPark: Bigger, Longer and Uncut are fine examples of great musicals with goodstories.I give this movie a 4/10 just because there were some good parts (albeitvery few), Nicole Kidman is good looking and Ewan McGregor was in it. Now ifyou'll excuse me, I have to go think about the hours of my life which I havelost forever. Which I could have spent on more important things like pokingout that stuff which collects in your belly button. If you haven't seen thismovie, but plan to, I advice you to turn on MTV for two hours. It will havebasically the same effect, except most of the time you will see commercialswhich may be at least remotely original.

Amazing film. Symbolism is brilliant- well acted, beautiful songs, beautiful sets. FULL of heart!

This has become my favorite movie of all time!Baz Luhrman has packed so much into this movie, that you have to see itdozens of times to try and catch it all. The music is absolutelygorgeous. Ewan McGregor and John Leguizamo in my opinion give oscarworthy performances, and also very strong performances from NicoleKidman and Richard Roxburgh. This movie is loaded with brilliant symbolism. Also, you feel so muchfor the characters along the way. The sets and costumes arespectacular.I loved every aspect of this movie, and recommend it toall....

crocodlle 2012-04-24 01:42:25

Almost Perfect!

I won't bore you with how great this movie is. It keeps its art with itsopening and ending, its dazzle with the dance and the music, and ourattention with the story. Its funny, sad, and overall, a great show.Surelyall the other summaries have told you what its about (but frankly, whocares? This is one of the few movies you can watch for the whole purposeofa movie, or simply because ITS JUST SO FUN!)As said, this is almostperfect! So what kept me from giving it a ten? Two things, really.1) EDITING - I know editors are professionals. They get paid six digitsfortheir work. I know you have to keep the story going. Otherwise, it's justadrown of music. But really, could it have hurt to have an extra second oneach take? For me, it was just annoying to CONSTANTLY cut from place toplace. Rarely did it slow. For 1/3 a second, you see a dress, but thenit'sa person, no wait, that was a - was that a dancing midget? No, it was themain character doing a quick solo - or was it something I was suppose toknow for the story? Wait, what'd I miss when I thought that? Its just toooverwhelming. I guess it was the point, but some people LIKE to actuallyseethe characters DANCE, as opposed to quick shots of them jumping (honestly, that's how quick it was, I could only tell they were jumping at certainpoints.)2) SOUND - Sadly, I saw the movie on DVD, which was programmed forsurroundsound, which I don't have. So, naturally, the music and voices soundedmuffled. Awful! And the worst part is, you KNOW it sounds TEN TIMES BETTERin a theatre. Perhaps I should have gotten the tape instead? Maybe thisshould be considered a bad DVD review... At least it has the dances inFULL;)Either way, great movie, highly recommend. You get an acid trip withouthaving to take acid!

MovieDave 2012-04-23 07:06:10

Just not my idea of fun...

Here's the confusion I am confronting - How do I write a review on a moviethat I walked out on just about an hour after it began? It's easy, state the facts. In excess of 85% of the movies' dialogue was notspoken, but sung. I am a big fan of Nicole Kidman's work, butI lost interest in this movie about 15 minutes after it began, andincidentally that's about how long it seemed before Nicole Kidman appearedon the screen. I don't walk out on movies very often, in fact it's a veryrare thing that I even leave the theatre before the credits are finishedrolling. But, now and then it's necessary to bite the bullet and say that'senough and walk towards the exits. I feel confident you'll see this movieappear in the video store bargain bin very soon.

dkh1967 2012-04-22 13:13:52

Moulin Rouge SPECTACULAR! SPECTACULAR!

Fantastic movie! Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor went out on a limb to doamusical version of Greta Garbo and Robert Taylor's CAMILLE. The movie isheavily based on the latter's love triangle (wealthy Baron, courtesan andpoor lover), even down to Garbo's coughing spells and eventual death withher lover holding her in his arms. Even "I will love you till my dyingday"dialogue. I was astounded how the "Christian" character used RobertTaylor'sfamous throwing francs at the ailing Garbo denouncing that his "summer oflove" with Garbo was a joke, obviously hurt.Other than the similarities between the two flicks, Moulin Rouge takes itastep further with music. I was excited to hear music I grew up withthroughout the movie. It made one stay tuned to the flick. It drags a bitwith the "Like A Virgin" scene (nonsense).Other than that "Come What May" was original to the movie and verytouching, especially near the end. I was very surprised to know that Nicole KidmanandEwan McGregor did their own singing and did it well! Why they both didn'tgrab an Oscar I will never know. Acting is important. Dancing isimportant.Singing took it to another level. You have to prize people for being thattalented in all three areas at one time. The movie is an extravaganza for the eyes and ears. Nicole Kidman isgorgeous and Ewan McGregor is fabulous in his role. They make the moviewhatit is.. It will become a "classic" before the decade is out. They will bewritten in history as the screen's best lovers. Their chemistry was "real"to the viewer. Maybe it is because they know each other personally asfriends? Anyhoo I was glad to be able to view this flick and give it adouble thumbs up.I recommend "Camille" as a "go along" with this movie. But I have to admitMoulin Rouge brings the old MGM classic to color and breathes more lifeintoit.
