A retelling of the bible story. Pharaoh Ramses decrees the death of all Hebrew children, but Moses, placed in a basket in the Nile by his mother, is taken by a royal princess and raised as the brother of the heir to the throne of Egypt, Memefta. Moses is called by God to lead his people from Egypt to the promised land. A very reluctant prophet, feeling unworthy of the call, Moses accepts the task. After a series of plagues Memefta agrees to let the Hebrews go. With second thoughts, he pursues them to annihilation of his army in the parting of the Red Sea. Starvation is averted by manna from heaven, the ten commandments are given the people through Moses, they go astray with worship of the golden calf. Forty years of wandering in the wilderness, until finally they reach what will be their home (which Moses lives to see but not to enter).

April 1, My husband and I watched this movie Easter Sunday and itseemed appropriate. We both agreed that it was very well depicted, andfairly accurate in it's portrayal of Moses and the events he wasinvolved in. His compassion and frustration for his fellow Israeliteswas very moving. Ben Kingsley is a very good actor. And yes, we didfind the exceptionally white teeth of some of the actors disarminglydistracting. What toothpaste do they use?????? :-) "No Christ,NoPeace......Know Christ,Know Peace!."
Not only is Ben Kingsley a great actor, he brings the character of Moses alive biblically and physically! "The Lord has spoken!" is by far my favorite line. Don't miss the also very touching 'manna from heaven' scene. Brillant!
This movie starts out as Moses not being liked among the Pharoah. Moses also speaks with a speech impediment. That struck me as odd since I was used to the Moses from The Ten Commandments, good-looking and liked by everybody. However, I noticed that this movie is much more biblical accurate. And for that, I really enjoyed it. After watching this movie, you will have a great knowledge of the complete Moses story.
This review is from: Moses (The Bible Collection) (DVD) While in places it is not exactly Biblical, this (in my opinion) is the best version I have yet seen of this ageless story--no offense to Charlton Hesston fans. I watch this over, and over, and over...
THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORATE MOVIES THUS FAR. BEN KINGSLEY DOES A GREAT JOB OF PIN-POINTING THE BIBLE'S DESCRIPTION OF THE CHARACTER OF MOSES. THIS IS AN INSPIRING MOVIE THAT WILL BE TREASURED IN MY HOME.
This review is from: Moses [VHS] (VHS Tape) Ben Kingsley does the world a great service with his rendition of the great leader Moses. This is an ordinary man who listens to God's guidance and is able to do great things. My favorite part is the parting of the Red Sea. Previously, Hollywood would have us believe that Moses received God's command, stretched forth his hand and Boom! Problem solved. TNT's version reminds us that faith and patience is required as God reveals His plan.
This movie is a part of the Bible Collection that aired on TV. This movie goes over Moses life from his birth to when the Hebrews were to enter into the promised land. The movie isn't on par with the classic Ten Commandments, but it is on par with the othe movies, with a few exceptions, in the Bible Collection. The acting is very well done in this movie and the pace of the film is one that takes you into the story and keeps you there without bogging down in details you don't need and you won't be bored with it.I felt it kept close to Scripture fairly well and I recommend this one to anyone. It's also family friendly.
If I could rate it a 10 I would. It was great; however, be prepared to dedicate time to watch the entirety of the movie. My suggestion is to let it be one of those movies for a rainy day or for a weekend you stay in. The movie sticks very closely to the bible, however does not replace it (in no form)and the writer's do use some creative adjustments. I was impressed on how much they got into the 3 hours. They showed many of the plaques that fell on Egypt (many that other adaptations don't touch on), many of the trials the Hebrews had to endure in the wilderness, (the manna and quail, the golden calf, Miriam's leperosy, the striking of the rock), and a pretty good depiction of what Moses' personality may have been like. The parts not so pleased with- how Aaron was let off so easy as it related to the golden calf (it is depicted as he only allowed the others to make the calf and it doesn't show he is the one to make the calf), the small amount of people depicted in the exodus and in the wilderness (their where really over 600,000 and a couple of hundred). But it only made me go back and read the story of the Exodus again (Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), so it was a win-win situation. Eventhough it is very long; once you start the movie, it grabs your attention until the very end. I got Moses in the collection (which I strongly encourage for anyone buying this movie). Though they use some creative adjustments, it really gets the point across and well worth the price. Again 10 stars and 4 thumbs up.
Yesh, I wanted more! Honestly, I was completely captivated by thisfilm. After having read that part of scripture, I was overwhelmingpleased with the attention to detail in remaining true to scripturalaccuracy. Time and again I found myself saying out loud, "I rememberreading that part!" or "They sure didn't bother to include that in theversion with Charleton Heston." Which I DID like, by the way :).There were several scenes that brought me to the brink of tears. It wastruly an emotionally charged film with most excellent acting.I had the pleasure of watching it in its entirety and uninterrupted onTrinity Broadcasting Network only taking a run to the restroom and aquick change of my laundry in under 5 minutes. HA!
This review is from: Moses [VHS] (VHS Tape) Finally...a film about Moses that is about as realistic as you will get. I LOVED this version. It so vividly portrayed the trials and tribulations of Moses and a nation of people who followed him to the Promised Land. I was very impressed with the reality of the stage settings, costumes and portrayal of the realities of day-to-day living in those times. I got a very real sense of how it must have been for Moses to lead a group of people who were afraid, insecure and homeless...people who constantly, doubted and challenged Moses' relationship with God.Very accurate from a Biblical standpoint as well - the director did not take too many liberties with this film. There are so many great things about this movie I can't put it all into words. I've seen several versions of the Exodus, but this one is the best yet! I originally saw this movie on the TBN cable channel and I loved it so much, I'm buying it for my personal library. I HIGHLY recommend this video!
Like I previously said Ben Knigsley is a great actor, but nobody beats Heston, I'm buying all the collections available existing little by little. You know how it is!I have purchased a series of Bible Collections, and would appreciate that u keep on sending me e-mails especially new versions of all the epics available. Thanks, Robert Villar Jr.
I don't collect movies in general, but this is one was a must for me. I have also given multiple copies to friends. I have watched it multiple times and each time find myself inspired by its story, which is complemented by an excellent screenplay and marvelous actors. The casting is excellent; especially Ben Kingsley. He does a fantastic job.Being a corporate executive I especially appreciate how Moses struggled in how to lead people in the midst of his own inadequacies and personal burdens. It has inspired me in so many ways. For people more interested in its spiritual content, you won't be dissapointed either. It shows a real man [not like Charlton Heston in the Ten Commandments], in all his humaness, trying to know and obey his God. The spriritual element is of benefit to Jew or Christian; doesn't matter.I hope it inspires you as much as it did me.
I have this on DVD, and I love it. I used to watch it all the time, until I bought The Ten Commandments miniseries, but I will have towatch it again sometime! This film is really good, it has a lot ofaccuracy, a touching yet dramatic screenplay, and it is a powerful epicproduction. Some special effects are great, and it has a greatspiritual touch to it. I love it! I get emotional at the end when Mosesdies, especially with the music, and the Israelites mourning. I amgetting tears right now. Yet unfortunately it lacks something thattakes two points away from my vote, making it 8 out of ten. One pointwas taken away in the matter of special effects. In The Bible book ofExodus chapter 9 verse 23 it says that Moses stretched up his rodtowards the heavens and thunder hail were sent from God with firerunning down to Earth. In this film, you see hail and thunder, butwhere is the fire? And what about the parting of the sea. Look at thosepiddling little walls of water! And you don't even see the sea partlike in all the other versions! All these special effects could havebeen done so good by CGI! And the other point was taken because of howmuch it includes from the Biblical text. Where is the war of Amalekitesand the sweetening of the waters at Marah? They should have includedMoses getting nursed by his real mother Jochebed too! Anyway, I stillrecommend this, buy it, and the whole family will love it! Just makesure little kids don't see it, because it has a violent scene!
Moses is among the best film that I have seen from the Bible collection. Among the others I have seen are Joseph, David, Abraham, Jacob and Samson and Delilah. Ben Kingsley plays Moses, a feat he performs with remarkable success. He plays the ordinary man who answers God's call to carry out enormous responsibilities. Watching this film is a spiritual journey illustrating God's love for his people. Best of all, the story in the film is very close to that in the Bible (unlike the more spectacular "Ten Commandments" by Cecil DeMille). This is a compelling movie that illustrates vividly the challenges that Moses and a nation of people who followed him to the Promised Land had to endure. Moses, who stutters and occasionally blunders, initially feels inadequate and unequal to the enormity of his task and needed assistance from his brother Aaron. However, as the film develops, Moses grows not only in faith but also to be a confident leader who speaks with absolute authority as the Voice of God. The production is excellent. The stage settings, costumes and portrayal of the realities of day-to-day living in those times are very impressive. The Biblical story of Exodus comes to life as one gets some appreciation of the challenges that Moses had leading the mass of people under constant threat of attack, hunger and without a home and who had doubts about the authenticity of the relationship between Moses and God. There are many unforgettable moments in the movie such as the parting of the Red Sea and when Moses reaches the gates of the Promised Land, but cannot get there. However, the righteous and God fearing Moses accepts God's will.My only minor criticism is that although it is estimated that up to two and half-million Israelites left Egypt during the time of the Exodus, one sees the largest group of people in the film numbering just over 70, due to budget constraints. However, this does little to dilute this great movie which is well worth watching.
This review is from: Moses [VHS] (VHS Tape) Its so hard to beat "The Ten Commandments"We watched about 30 minutes of this, pulled it out, dusted off Charlton Heston, popped some popcorn, and watched it to the end.Although we really like Ben Kingsley in most everything else, we will probably give this one away.I'm sure someone would appreciate it.
This review is from: Moses (The Bible Collection) (DVD) If you like Bible DVD movies, then you should seriously consider buying this movie as part of THE BIBLE COLLECTION Box Set! You will get 6 DVD movies (ABRAHAM, JACOB, JOSEPH, MOSES, SAMSON & DELILAH, and DAVID) at about 50% less than buying them separately! MOSES shows scenes that I don't usually see in movies about Moses. This film rushes through the childhood of Moses before the opening credits are finished, but it makes up for it by doing a lot of Bible scenes that come after the 10 Commandments are given on Mount Sinai. You will see many Bible passages dramatized, including the Burning Bush, Manna & Quail from Heaven, Jethro's advice to delegate responsibility, the giving of the 10 Commandments, the Golden Calf, Miriam's leprosy, Korah's earthquake, Moses' sin of water from the rock, and the death of Moses, among many other Bible verses portrayed. The classic Charlton Heston 10 COMMANDMENTS movie had a highly productive, young Moses shown who is surprised to learn he's really a Hebrew, this version shows Moses to be a ridiculed, humble child, whose Hebrew roots are known, scorned, but tolerated by the Pharoah's household. They do more with the humbleness aspect of a stuttering Moses, which is Biblical.I was impressed that they showed the slaying of those responsible for the Golden Calf fiasco! Korah's earthquake was another surprise, but they condensed that scene a bit much.At the halfway point, 90 minutes into the 3 hours, they show the Red Sea parting, which leaves plenty of time to cover more of the 40 years of wandering than is usually shown in a Moses movie!Christopher Lee has a brief cameo appearance as the grandfather Pharoah of Moses and Ramses, but the main actor for Ramses does a great performance that really echoes Christopher Lee's attitude as the ruler of Egypt. The worst non-Biblical scene was having the Israelites all shout out the 10 Commandments at the foot of Mount Sinai (which never happened), before they were written in stone.MOSES is a great Bible movie and is more Scripturally accurate than the classic film THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (starring Charlton Heston). You should also consider the BIBLE SERIES BOX SET, which contains 3 DVD movies of equal quality as this one, (ESTHER, JEREMIAH, and SOLOMON).
This is one of the Moses movies that I like the best, I also like the RAI version made by in the 1970`s Where Moses was played by Burt Lancester and Irene Pappas was playing Moses`s wife. But I think in this movie Moses is portrayed more as a person experiencing the difficulties as a leader, Sir Kingsley has made a very nice job of picturing Moses with his loving and caring side as well. You might be disappointed if you are looking for a rock star charisma in Moses though.
This review is from: Moses [VHS] (VHS Tape) This film covers more of the Moses story than any other film I have seen. Although there are a few inaccuracies, they are few compared to most Hollywood films and generally don't make any substantive change to the Biblical text. One problem with the film is that the crowd scenes just don't do justice to the reality. Scholars estimate there were about 2.5 million Hebrews in Egypt who made the exodus. I doubt if there are any scenes in this film which show more than 50. The film could be greatly improved if they could add computer generated people to build the crowd scenes. This is one thing The 10 Commandments could do well. The second problem, is that the film just isn't as exciting as The 10 Commandments. Perhaps that comes from being more accurate. Overall, it is a good film which does an excellent job at covering the events.
This review is from: Moses (The Bible Collection) (DVD) I really enjoyed this movie. Ben Kingsley does an excellent job with this role. I think this type of movie shows the real side of being human while at the same time loving God. In this portrayal, you see all the "warts" of being human. Being angry. Being disappointed. Failing. Yet at the same time, Kingsley shows such an "awe" and love for God. One of my favorite scenes is where God is speaking to all the people. Moses is standing smiling (even laughing) at the joy of hearing his God speak while the people are terrified. It really shows what it's like to have a real relationship with God. I would recommend this movie to anyone. As has been stated, "The Ten Commandments" is a classic too and sure has the effects galore. As also pointed out, there are some variations from scripture. But I think the thing that always makes me feel so good is seeing the human side of these people we've read about and heard about all our lives. To be able to see they faced the same problems we face, to see that they dealt with all the heartaches and disappointments we do, to see that they just sometimes "blow it" like we do, well.......to my way of thinking, it only brings me closer than ever to God in realizing his love for us all. It's truly a wonderful movie. I would highly recommend it.
I don't know why I didn't buy this CD sooner. Ben Kingsley does a fantastic job as Moses. He's my favourite version of Moses thus far. He has a good range of emotions and he exudes enthusiasm and life in his role. I also think Frank Langella did fine as the Pharoah. (Though Paul Rhys is still my favourite "Pharoah"!) Langella's angry shouting was sobering. Most importantly, though, the storyline did stay fairly true to the Scriptures, which is most important to me. It is definitely worth a viewing. And, it's a must-have for those who especially love the Story of Moses.
