One of the more underrated spoofs

...i saw "MONSTER IN MY CLOSET" one day, back in the 90's, when istayed home sick from school. It has always stuck with me as one of themore well-done tributes to 50's style scifi, while also being a veryclever spoof of the genre. The performances are all grade-8 cheese, but highly entertaining.I've always been surprised by how much emotion i felt for the monster,in the final reel. Even as a 12 year old kid i really felt the monster's love for thereporter. When he chooses death over not being able to fit in thecloset with the guy, it almost brings a tear to my eye.Of course, all these years later the entire concept of the closet andit's representation of repressed homosexuality just adds anotherwonderful layer to the satire. This one really deserves more kudos!

Meh.......

Think about the film's cinematic style and visual effects, the acting and direction, what is the film trying to say? Great 'B ' movie, not intended to be serious

Spoof of many sci-fi movies. Creature itself is reminiscent of thecreature in Alien. Also reminds me a little of the creature inPumpkinhead. Much less 'real' looking in appearance. Spoof of the moviePsycho shower scene. As the monster walks down the street, a militaryman yells 'bombs, tanks, planes, nothing...' which is a spoof of War ofthe Worlds as our weapons proved useless against the invaders. Thekindly professor, Henry Gibson, attempts to communicate using axylophone, playing the musical notes from the famous scene of CloseEncounters of a Third Kind. The creature seems to respond by extendingand retracting its inner 'Alien' type mouth in and out to the beat ofthe xylophone. When we learn that the existence of closets give thiscreature energy, we are all told to destroy all closets. This is agreat scene, as people all over the world are tearing their closets topieces. Good for laughs. Not serious at all.

Leave your brain at the door, but this could have been a lot worse

Troma aren't exactly well known for high quality horror films, and thisone fits the bill pretty well in the quality stakes; but it's actuallymore childish than the usual gory Troma output. The film is somethingof a spoof of the monster movie genre and, as the title suggests, focuses on the childhood fear of a monster in the closet. The filmkicks off with a few mysterious murders and it's not long before thehorrible closet monster is revealed. The monster itself is an extremelycamp creation and is sure to leave most audience members in stitches -not usually the desired effect for a monster but the film is obviouslyintended to be tongue in cheek and the monster is actually a veryoriginal creation. I really wasn't expecting anything at all decentfrom this film, but in fairness to it; it's actually quite decent. There's nothing particularly clever about it; though the idea of themonster 'recharging' in closets is nice in that it seems to be aham-fisted way of explaining the whole closet monster idea. Thecharacters and plot line surrounding the monster are interesting andentertaining and Monster in the Closet is at least a decent way towaste ninety minutes or so.

Monster In The Closet

This is a hilarious low-tech movie that most people can enjoy. It is not overdone with loud unrealistic Special Effects that destroy the pleasure of current horror flicks. The movie is done in a straight-up CAMPY style, even the faint of heart will be won over. When I reflect on some of the scenes I still burst out with laughter!

A masterpeice from Troma

Troma king of indie films has another great find here. It's a horror Movie with a lot of dark humor. I thought it was great, plus there are a lot a fimilar faces in it that you wouldn't expect to be in a low budget movie such as this. A real treat for adults and kids alike. A monster that travels around only through closets. What's not to like.

Awesome

My brother and I literally grew up on this film that my dad taped off TV! We had never seen the first ten minutes, but that never stopped us. Now about 7 years later my brother gave it to me on DVD for X-mas and made family history while watching it for the first time ever from the very beginning and all the way to the end commercial free. I think this film is a classic, A)it's hilarious, B) it's clever, and C) it's a break from the everyday wannabes who try to make great films. That ABC thing is one of the many great jokes that runs through the entire film. And the joke that always begins with "When I was a young boy I once found a frog..." will have you laughing for hours!

Monster in the Closet

Silly spoof of rubber suit monster movies has a newspaper columnist(forthe obituary page)getting a scoop which could make his career regardinga creature which has been using closets to snatch it's victims, a bodycount starting to emerge.Richard Clark(Donald Grant possibly designed after Clark Kent)finallyis "rewarded" a job to cover a series of bizarre "closet murders"where, it seems, a monster is actually attacking people in theirhouses, leaving behind strange marks on their necks. Professor DianeBennett(Denise DuBarry)believes, along with scientist Dr.Pennyworth(Henry Gibson costumed as an Alfred Einstein look-a-like),that there's something seriously sinister that should be studied andlearned from while the sheriff, Sam Ketchem(Claude Akins; whosedip-chewing is played for laughs)considers only to stop it from hurtinganyone else. When attempts to kill the monster fail, the military arecalled in, General Turnbull(Donald Moffat; playing him stubborn, profane, and stiff-necked)in charge of killing it. When all the arsenalof the army do little to stop the creature, it's up to science todiscover a means to somehow end it's reign of terror. A specific tuneand electrical power might can contribute to the monster's demise, butDiane could have another idea..what about the monster's refuge, theclosets of the world? The monster is a grotesque rubber creation which slightly resemblesGeiger's xenomorph alien in that a second face is inside it's mouth, popping out every once in a while to screech when Pennyworth plays atune on his xylophone. I think the film is more effective when we justsee it's sharp-claw hands bursting through closet doors, but mostviewers want to see the monster terrorizing citizens. An odd recurrencehas Diane spellbound into a trance when Clark's glasses are removed.Early child performance for FAST AND THE FURIOUS' Paul Walker asDiane's geeky son. Paul Dooley and Stella Stevens(in a shower, atribute to PSYCHO)have cameos as a married couple who could becomepotential victims, as does John Carradine as a blind man with a canewho loses his trained dog(and then himself)when stumbling into thecloset. A common occurrence at the beginning has victims pulled intothe closet, the camera panning around to only show clothes flying outwith the door blocking the violence, the monster's guttural growl onthe soundtrack relating to us it's terrible deeds. Without some minor Stella Stevens cleavage and Moffat's excessiveprofanity, MONSTER IN THE CLOSET would be harmless family fun. Such aloving spoof even includes the classic line, "It was beauty that killedthe beast." Also features Frank Ashmore as Clark's newspaper rival,Scoop, whose reputation at getting the best articles and stories can bemore than a bit intimidating, and Howard Duff as Diane's friend, FatherFinnegan(always seeking the Lord's guidance when the monster strikes).

so awesome.

as far as b-movies go, this one is an instant classic. The monster alone is too funny. If you are a collector or enjoy cheesy horror/sci fi nonsense you should pick this one up. Not incredibly violent, but very ridiculous.

sketchy 2012-05-05 03:39:56

trashy fun.

Rather fun spoof about a closet-dwelling monsterthat terrorizes people. (small spoilers) Although the film is very silly, and the monster is completely absurd (itlooks like a giant pile of feces with a albino snake-like creature thatcomes out of it's mouth.), despite creature-maker Douglas Beswick'sfame. But the cast is good and the humor is funny, so I can recommend it tob-movie fans.

Where's Col. Sanders when you need him?

Yet another homage to 50s sf/horror flicks. The movie predictably opens with a woman being eaten by the monster of the title (Kevin Peter Hall). No prizes for guessing where it's hiding. Being a PG movie there is no blood, just clothes being thrown out of the door. Strange considering this is a Troma production. But soon the monster, which resembles a man-sized chicken wing breaks out of the closet and as in all B movies wrecks havoc on the townspeople. Soon a biological technician and a small town obituary columnist(?!) are assigned to investigate the strange diappearance while the police, army and every man and his dog are called in to eradicate the chicken. This isn't one of Troma's best, or one of their "Best Worst" but you get to see Stella Stevens in the shower, so that's god enough for me to rate this 2 stars.

Engaging spoof of tacky Grade B monster flicks

Meek newspaper reporter Richard Clark (a likable performance by DonaldGrant), spunky college biology professor Diane Bennett (a charmingportrayal by the pretty Denise DuBarry), Diane's precocious littlesquirt son (a very young and then unknown Paul Walker), and eccentricelderly scientist Dr. Pennyworth (a wonderfully flaky Henry Gibsonsporting white Einstein hair) join forces to figure out a way to defeatan ugly, hulking, and predatory beast (Kevin Peter Hall in a funkyrubber suit) that comes out of people's closets and kills them.Writer/director Bob Dahlin neatly concocts a witty and affectionateparody of choice cheesy 50's low-budget creature features that unfoldsat a constant brisk pace, maintains an amiable tongue-in-cheek tonefrom start to finish, and possesses a certain sweet-natured sensibilitythat's impossible to either hate or resist. Moreover, Dahlin tosses ina pleasant romance between the two appealing leads for good measure andin an amusing twist on the standard genre convention makes the monstergay so it can abduct the male star instead of the female maincharacter. The game cast have a field day with the blithely goofymaterial, with especially stand-out work from Claude Atkins as thehard-nosed Sheriff Sam Ketchum, Howard Duff as sensitive and devoutlyreligious priest Father Finnegan, Donald Moffat as the gung-ho,profanity-spewing General Trumbull, Jesse White as crusty newspapereditor Ben, and Frank Ashmore as Richard's slick'n'smarmy rival Scoop.Popping up in nifty bits are Paul Dooley, John Carradine (as a crankycane-slinging old blind guy), and the ever-lovely Stella Stevens (in anice send-up of the famous shower scene from "Psycho"). Ronald W.McLeish's polished cinematography boasts plenty of snazzy zoom-inclose-ups and smooth tracking shots. Barrie Guard's perfectly cornballhum'n'shiver score does the robustly generic trick. An immenselyenjoyable romp.

it's good for me and for you too (trust in me)

As sub product of Z series it's perfect, so don't be cruel withit, there is not q to ask him more. The monster is a little as an a bugwith desires of company, I believe q in the fund is good person andwhat seeks he is affection, the hyphen he transmits certain sensationof I empty existence and you finish for wanted to listen radio head orthe brothers who songs in Spain in 70's and one of them was very uglyand they made a cover of space oddity...I think that has more fund ofit q many think and I do not intend to create cathedral. I notify thatmy English is pathetic. It is a good piece who that that throw the dogswhen they remove them to stroll. and who the contrary thing say. ..meit as!!! ; PI live the monster baby!

"Destroy all closets!"

~Spoiler~ Monster in the Closet is another dumb horror/comedy that is neitherfunny nor scary. This one is from Troma, but it looks a little glossierthan what the studio normally puts out. I say that because of the castand the creature design. I've never heard of the leads, but some of thesupporting cast are rather famous. Henry Gibson, Claude Akins, JohnCarradine, Donald Moffat, Paul Dooley, and Stella Stevens are some goodcharacter actors to have in a project like this. Also featured are ayoung Paul Walker and Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson. I bet they don't evenremember this one, and wouldn't admit to it if they did. Kevin PeterHall (Predator) is playing the titular closet monster. The plot issimple: The monster comes out of the closet and kills people andnothing or no one can stop it. There are many attempts at humor, butmost of it is just boring. It all ends in a silly finale where theworld has to destroy their closets. The movie was apparently filmed in1983 but didn't get released until 1987. I wonder why?

Decent Troma effort

Yes, "Monster In The Closet" is a guilty pleasure. Though it's not orientedfor veteran horror fans, this film provides fun in a very sillyway. It's a good dark comedy involving a very cheesy (Troma style) monster livingin children's closets. The beginning is quite good and imaginative, and theending is stuff for legend in cheesy horror cinema! Thousand cops against the monster is something that hasn't banished from mymind since the early 90's.Recommended for soft core horror fans. When I watched the Disney animatedfeature "Monsters Inc." I thought about this film, and I immediately savedit from my forgotten movie vault. Your average 80's film.4/10-Mediocre fun!

Troma's smitten monster

If you know any Troma movie -- an example is "The Toxic Avenger" --then you should have an idea of what to expect in "Monster in theCloset". This is a very tongue-in-cheek flick. After three people getkilled in their closets, a San Francisco reporter goes to the town toinvestigate, and discovers that there's literally a monster appearingin people's closets! Nothing can stop this beast! One of the interesting things is the mixture of characters. There's thenerdy reporter (Donald Grant), a teacher whom he loves (DeniseDuBarry), her hyper-intellectual son (Paul Walker of "The Fast and theFurious"), a scientist (Henry Gibson) who resembles Einstein and wantsto communicate with the monster, a nervous priest (Howard Duff), ageneral (Donald Moffat) who knows nothing except brute force, and anumber of other people. Watch for John Carradine and Stella Stevens insmall roles. As I was saying, this movie is not meant to be taken seriously. Thewhole thing is pretty much a joke. I wonder if the title subtly impliesthat the monster is gay or something. Whether or not it does, thismovie is just plain funny. And Stella Stevens sure is a fox!

Very funny yet low budget Troma flick yet I cant find the good special feature.

This was a really good Troma flick tho nothing close to Toxie or Terrorfirmer. The whole destroy all closets thing really made me laugh.I suggest if you want to see what Troma can do but you are to uptight toseethe more gorey films then punch yourself in the head for being such afilmprude and rent this. I promise the church wont look down upon you forthisone.
