When a serial killer indicates that his next target is the Miss United States beauty pageant, the F.B.I. decides that they must get an undercover agent as a participant in the contest. A search uncovers no suitable candidate other than a bumbling female agent. Reluctantly, her captain agrees to let her join the team working the case. The team is led by a womanizing agent who has an apparent reluctant attraction to Bullocks character. She enters as Miss New Jersey, replacing a contestant who was discovered to have acted in a porno film. The pageant managers are immediately aghast about the agent appearing in the pageant, but arrange a top handler to come give her a quick makeover, with the expected outstanding results. Unfortunately, she still is bumbling. When the killer is suddenly caught, everything seems to be over, except the female agent tries to convince her boss that something is still not right. She has discovered that the pageant managers are being dismissed after 21 years for younger people, and Bergens character may not be as solid as she seems on the surface.
Movie Photos:
We have taken some photos of "Miss Congeniality". They represent actual movie quality.
"Drop Dead Gorgeous" implied that beauty pageants can make for greathumor, but "Miss Congeniality" takes it to a whole new level. StarringSandra Bullock as a sarcastic FBI agent participating in the MissAmerica pageant to thwart an attack, the movie pulls no punches. Ithink that my favorite part is when her trainer (Michael Caine) asksher why New Jersey is called the Garden State. I couldn't have come upwith a better answer myself! All in all, it's great to see them mockingthe Miss America pageant. I agree with a previous reviewer's scathingcomments about it (a bunch of stupid models saying how they're going tosave the world). You're sure to love this movie. Also starring BenjaminBratt, Candice Bergen, Ernie Hudson and William Shatner.
This movie is exactly what it was intended to be, a light-hearted comedyanda bit of a spoof on beauty contests. It has no deeper meanings, no storytotell, no social messages; it is just a comedy. If you are interested inlaughing at situation (and some slap-stick) comedy, then this will fit thebill. If you are looking for anything deeper, go see something else.Considering that it does not pretend to be anything other than what it is,this movie is great entertainment. If you want to laugh, go seeit.
How could Michael Caine not won anything for his performance asVictor??? He nearly steals the show and seems to have produced the mostfocused characterization for his role as rarely seen on any film. Whata shame and it is no wonder the producers could not get him for thesequel. Mr. Caine provides a superior support role and was overlookedfor his efforts. At the end of the movie, someone needed to convinceGracie to some back inside the Hotel for her "farewell" as a surprise, and of course Victor was the one, and the only logically believablecharacter to convince Gracie to come back inside. Victor had a lot ofknowledge pertinent to the Pageants, as well as the "inside" politicsof the Pageants, and applied every ounce of brilliance to transformGracie to becoming a "Total Woman" and his own portrayal of a SupportTeam Member. Victor's character was so vitally important to this storythat without him, there would have been no Gracie the contestant, acrucial cog in the wheel of this movie.
Being a die-hard Sandra Bullock fan, I have to say that I thought thismoviewas great. However, I was VERY surprised at some of the other reviews ofthis movie. People complain that it is a "fluff piece" but I do not agree.Yes, it IS a romantic comedy, but those going to see it or rent it probablyKNOW that before they see it (unless they were clubbed and dragged into thetheater against their will!) It is exactly that: A romantic comedy thatisvery funny but yet does not take itself too seriously. I feel that notonlyBullock was great, but the entire cast was wonderful. The actors actuallyseem to be having FUN while making the movie, which makes it even better. So, if you are looking for a deep, serious movie with an intricate plotline, this is not the movie for you. However, if you are in the mood for alight, fresh, very funny, and very cute flick, this is the one foryou!
i always carry a soft spot on Sandra Bullock since her breakthrough on Speedand even though i know she's having tough times with her films after that istill love her.Miss Congeniality affirmed that one more time....she's funny, cute, wit, andjust lovely, what can i say...the movie itself maybe seems dumb and silly but i laugh all the waythrough....Sandra Bullock, keep up the good work girl...!!i am waiting foryour next project and hopefully it's Oscar-worthy.....
I was drug into the theater with my girlfriend expecting to hate this movie, but fortunately was pleasantly surprised. Definitely not as corny or cheesyas the TV trailers made it seem to be. It did have some funny parts and was,for the most part, surprisingly entertaining. Not the best comedy I've everseen, but still much better than many of the romantic comedies I'vewitnessed in my day. Its faults are the mainly the completely predictable story line, and thecheesy love interest subplot. However, the movie doesn't take itselfseriously as it pokes fun at its events (and its cliches) all the waythrough. Its merits are Sandra Bullock, whose grace and charm on the screen areundeniable. Generally good supporting performances all around by the cast, who seem to be having fun. Many parts of the movie are genuinely funny, andthus it does its job as a comedy. FINAL RATING: 6/10 A good genre movie. Fans of romantic comedies/predictable movies will no doubt sing the praises of this movie, since it isthe best one of this particular genre to come along in awhile. Doesn't addanything too bold or novel to the mix, but is still a fun movie with a fewgood laughs. Recommended to romantic comedy fans. Noob Aalox
Exception being, Edward Norton (Keep the Faith was a very, very goodmovie). This film made me cringe at points for being so egotistical. Start from theimprobable beginning: a little, bespectacled girl hitting two guys.Improbable, but passable. Cut to the next scene, the same spectacles onSandra Bullock. Oh, she is conducting a raid! How original! We just got towatch the SAME scene a couple of months ago in "Hannibal". So we know whatwill happen: she makes a mistake, she gets beaten for it, and (but ofcourse) she gets a new assignment so that she can clear hername.Stop me if I am wrong here, but this is one of the longest chain of clichésin any movie. "Big momma's house", "Hannibal", "Pygmalion", "My Fair Lady",you name it, it's here.It shows who the "Producer" was. She never stops hogging the screen, eithereating tons of ice cream (who thought that was funny), or smiling, orinsulting anyone. Someone should tell Ms. Bullock that it takes a specialsomeone to be funny and gross at the same time (think Eddie Murphy), and sheis definitely not that kind of person. Her jokes are boring, her acting isonly so-so, and she never stops being "the nice one, the intelligent one,the good one". What a bore. Furthermore, the film lacks coherence and credibility. We are supposed to bewatching a "serious" comedy, yet when she is having her make-up applied, amegaphone blurts out: "make up, podiatrist, dermatologist, aisle 25,urgent", as if in a real hangar. So dumb. I agree, there are times we shouldcheck our brains at the door and just forget all about coherence, but thatis usually in "stupid" comedies, as "Dumb and dumber". This film ispretentious AND dumb at the same time. Not to mention the fact that sweet Sandra Bullock transforms "magically"from being a brat to a beauty queen without the audience understanding whatwent into it. We only see her assistant, Vic (very funny performance, BTW)having trouble with her. Oh, and I won't mention the fact that this should be an insult to anyfeminist. It really is degrading to women, considering the fact that itshows beauty contests as having something to do with intelligence. Isn'tthis the 21st century?Overall, 6. Only because the supporting cast did make me laugh (attimes).
This was a very very good movie!! I loved it. It is full of laughs andsurprises. Sandra Bullock is an amazing actress. She preforms her partall throughout the movie. Michael Caine is also a remarkable actor. When i picked it up i wasn't sure if it would be just anotherundercover cop movie (which isn't a bad thing, they are pretty good)but i wasn't expecting much. I was blown away!! This movie wasentertaining throughout the whole thing. There was never a dull moment. There is action, comedy, romance, and suspense. I have purchased thismovie and have watched it multiple times. If you like this movie watchall of Sandra Bullocks movies. the divine secrets of the ya yasisterhood is also another good one that she is in.
Miss Congeniality is a pretty weak film with dull humor and bad acting. Mysister who is 11 saw this movie in theatres and had told me that it was thebest movie she had ever seen. I was convinced for three months that themovie was worth watching but when I watched it on Pay-Per-View I wasdisappointed in what I had seen. The movie was basically made up of weakhumor that entertain girls of the age 11 to 14. There was a rare occasionduring the film when Micheal Caine and William Shatner made me laugh. Thecasting wasn't all that bad especially with Sandra Bullock who is usuallythe athletic and particular type when doing a movie. This movie is not amust see but if you feel that it looks exciting than watch it but if you aresimply just wanting to see Sandra Bullock then you might want to considerwatching 28 days.
Sandra Bullock shines as the reluctant FBI insider in the Miss United Statesof America Beauty Pageant. She proves that not only can she handle dialoguewell but she also has a real flair for physical comedy. This is an outlandish film that tries (only half-heartedly) to be a suspense but why let plot get in the way of the laughs? And the laughs wereplentiful.Even though Candice Bergen proved in `Murphy Brown' that she can handle thepace and timing necessary to pull off a comedic part she is superb as KathyMorningside the power behind the Miss United States of America BeautyPageant. She hasn't really made any films since 1986 and she was missed.Benjamin Bratt is credible as Gracie Hart's (Sandra Bullock) FBI partner Âeven though in the beginning of the film he was prettier than shewas.Michael Caine is sublime as the beauty-queen-maker that is hired to turnGracie into a believable contestant for the pageant. He turns in his usualstellar performance. There is actually a message here though I am not certain exactly what it is Gracie espouses the Âpolitically correct' view that beauty pageants arelittle more than meat markets but at the end of the film she is empowered byfinding the physical beauty that she didn't know she possessed. There are few quiet moments in this film  the audience laughs out loudduring most of it; and for good reason: it is very funny.
This movie is very funny, Sandra Bullock is at her best here and hersupporting cast are just as funny if not even more. Micheal Caine here isincredibly funny as well as Benjamin Pratt. The characters in this movieseem to "gel" well together and act exactly proficently. This movie is extremely funny and even tries to shift some of the mystiquesurrounding beauty pagents away, unsuccessfully in my view however. Thereare some simply class bits in this movie, for example the bit on the planeand also when Bullock is being made over, but at the same time there aresome bits which are so inane and boring that i wanted to throw my tv out ofthe window! Fortuantly however, those bits are few and far between, thereare very few of them and the movie on the whole is something that i wouldgladly see again and again due to its brilliant casting and also its veryfunny outlook.
Okay, I watched this movie when it first came out and I thought that I must post a shout out for this movie! This is one of the drama movies that's my favorite. It is about Gracie Hart, who is a member of the FBI, and is undercover for her wildest, craziest, oh and did I mention, most frigtening nightmare---dreams. She is to enter the beauty pageant, which needs a beautiful, and clumsy kind of women, but guess what? She is neither of it. She doesn't comb her hair, she doesn't eat like a lady or even walk like one, her perfect talent is to kick bad guys a**. But the pageant needs her, because someone is trying to bomb the crowned winner, and she needs to find out who before it is too late. It is a my fave so it can be yours too!Watch the second movie, Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous in theaters March 25, 2005. I hope it is as good as the first one!
this movie is too great! its good 4 girls cuz its an entertaining chick flick, not to mention benjamin bratt's in it. its also an enjoyable movie for guys to watch cuz sandra bullock's in it and i dont kno a guy who doesnt like her! get this movie, you wont regret it
Premise was a little shaky, but the physical humor and amazing transformation of Sandra made the movie worth watching. While I feel they attempted too much to be serious in parts, overall the movie is very funny and worth sitting down to watch.
This review is from: Miss Congeniality (DVD) Pratfalls and snorty laughter, Sandra (Austin's Sweetheart) Bullock's stock-in-trade, were never put on better display than in this film. "Miss Congeniality" is a little whispy and predictable, and while generally enjoyable enough never reaches the heights of zaniness it might have aspired to. Without Sandy, it would be a dull and cheerless thing indeed, despite workmanlike performances by Candace Bergen, Michael Caine, and the old hamasaurus himself, William Shatner. Fortunately, the irrepressible Miss Bullock's considerable comedic talents raise the script beyond itself. But the true gem in the DVD version is the alternate audio track with running commentary from Bullock and one of the screenwriters -- this is very entertaining and revealing and is frequently much funnier than the movie itself. Add an extra half-star to the DVD version for this feature alone. Sidebar Note: my wife and I worked for two miserable days as "background actors" (extras) on this movie, which was largely shot in Austin in the spring of 2000. You will not see us, alas! The dance club scenes have been cut to almost non-existence. (How unlike my stint as a military reenactor in "Two for Texas," in which my coonskin cap stole the show!) Another brush with Oscar denied. How cruel this business is! Sob!(Ha-ha! snort-snort!)
Sandra Bullock is one of America's best loved actresses for a reason - she is genuine, not fake. I have seen several of her movies, and I love them all. They just wouldn't be the same with another actress in it. Miss Congeniality is a hilarious comedy. It is that rare picture, that although it screams CHICK FLICK, is something men will roar with laughter at, too. My friend persuaded my husband to see it, and he LOVED it.Benjamin Bratt and Bullock have *sigh* chemistry. I found myself wishing they could get together in real life. Such wonderful supporting actors, including William Shatner, Michael Caine, and Candice Bergen, make the film even more delightful. This movie has slapstick, action, romance, everything. It is one of the best comedies ever, a true classic.
Good-natured and funny comedy has Bullock perfectly cast as an uptight, tomboyish federal agent whoÂfor the first time in her entirelifeÂdecides to embrace her femininity after she's assigned to goundercover at a beauty pageant to try and apprehend an elusivecriminal. She's never even worn a dress, much less makeup andaccessories, and the results are hilarious as she tries to do her joband be a credible contestant as well. Film's setup and execution arepredictable, yet kept afloat by a meaningful story, good lines, and bigtime laughs. Bullock is as appealing as she's ever been, surroundedhere by a first-rate supporting cast. ***
I love this movie I got so mad at the Oscars that they didn't nominate this film. Oscars don't give comedies a chance they go straight to the dramas. And that is like so not the drama. We need funny scenes at the oscars not dramatic scenes like you're just gonna start balling and cry a river.I mean with all those dramatic scenes I bet you cry a river bigger than the Mississippi. So back to Miss Congeniality.I loved this film it's one of my favortes! And Sandra Bullock is a good actress. And if I was an oscar judge she would at least have one oscar! At least a nomination! See this film it's great!
This is a great movie that has everything: drama, witty conversations, humor, action, and pretty pageant gals. Sandra Bullock is hilarious, and this movie really brings out some more of her great comedic talents. It also brings out her beauty as an actor.Miss Congeniality is about an undercover FBI agent becoming a beauty pageant queen for New Jersey for security reasons. But becoming a beauty queen takes much work and coercion. All I have to see is that you got to see this movie, because it's both hilarious and touching.
This is a really cute movie. I like almost anyting with Sandra B in them. Miss Congeniality kept moving and had lots of humor.
