Two wealthy sisters, both heiresses to their familys cosmetics fortune, are given a wake-up call when a scandal and ensuing investigation strip them of their wealth.
Okay, so there's this movie out called "Material Girls," right? Nowthat Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan have become more than just actresses(they have released CDs at some point), many people, as evidenced hereat IMDb, think that this movie is a big turkey, right?Actually, I think it's great!!!!!"Material Girls" may not be like a Madonna type of film (she sang asong with the same name back in the 80s), but it's good! Even though Iam a man, I, too, have a heart for this young duo of Duff and Lohan.Everything in this film got me excited; the story was great, the scenesare funny and heartwarming, and it's just about everything I wouldexpect from these two ladies (who are about my age, BTW; they're juststarting out on this acting craze! Psh, won't be long before we seecrazy stories about them at the supermarket! LOL)"Material Girls" is a great movie not just for old girls and youngwomen, but old boys and young girls as well!!!!! Go see it; you won'tregret it.10 stars.
Madonna's anthem was only good-naturedly arrogant, but the SoCal twins, like the film's script, are arrogant, ghastly immature and offensive to any audience that isn't all of the above.
Material Girls was possibly the most painful movie I have ever watched.I couldn't stop cringing, and felt embarrassed for every personinvolved in producing this film. I'll be honest: I love reality TV, soI can tolerate bad writing, but the writing in Material Girls made mecringe every single moment. Subplots appeared out of nowhere anddropped out without explanation. But the worst parts of the movie (andthere are so many bad moments) were the little touches of racism:Hillary Duff's imitation of a "gang-banger" by putting on a bad Mexicanaccent, and the black executive's (the only minor character who didn'toveract, actually) breaking out into rap at the end. I meanoverwhelming awfulness is one thing, but overwhelming awfulness plusracism is quite another.
I saw Material Girls earlier today in,go figure,an empty theater.I hadwanted to see it because I had heard such awful things about so iwanted to judge for myself. And I have to say it really was'NT thatbad.I mean lets face it its not going to win any Oscars but who expectsa movie starring Hilary and Hailey Duff to win anything but a KidsChoice Award. The story is rather simple and to the point. They're richpopular and than they're poor and unpopular, end of story. But it wasalmost enjoyable to watch,it had a few funny moments but also a fewlong boring moments.Long story short its an enjoyable, but ratherforgettable, way to spend two hours.Unless you're a ten year old girlthan you'll probably Loooove this!
Material Girls reviewed by Sam Osbornrating: 1 out of 4There's a moment in Material Girls when the infinitely wise and humblelawyer at the Free Legal Clinic bears down on the equally infinitestupidity of Ava Marchetta (Haylie Duff) and coolly snarls, "you're allfrosting, without the cupcake." Granted, this one-liner is of no greatwit or intelligence it does hold a kind of all-encompassing truth aboutMaterial Girls. Except, in saying Material Girls has as much density asa cupcake's frosting is probably giving the film a world of credit ithas no business deserving. The gimmick of Material Girls is in the Duff sisters. Whatever filmphotographed behind them on the film's posters is immaterial. For allwe care, this could be Hong Kong Kung Fu Fury, just as long as it starsthe Duff sisters. So in the same way people go to see Snakes on a Planejust to see some actual snakes on an actual plane, people will go seeMaterial Girls only to watch they're adolescent idols bouncing andhopping and giggling about in front of the camera. The quality of thefilm behind them is irrelevant; just a prettily painted canvas for ablonde hullabaloo. But for all those parents goaded into bringing theirten-year old daughter, I suppose a synopsis is appropriate. Ava andTanzie Marchetta (Haylie and Hilary Duff) are the faces of MarchettaFacial Products. They're glistening socialites in the vane worldinhabited in reality by Paris Hilton and her partying cohortsÂminus thesex tapes. They're father, Victor Marchetta, passed away two yearsearlier and the company will soon be left in the girls' hands. But whena cut-rate newscaster breaks a scandal on Marchetta products causingcancer, the girls' stock plummets and they're left, gasp, without theircredit cards. The girls must unite and disprove the accusations inorder to save the image of their father. In the process of course, Avaand Tanzie must learn humility and sincerity through the conduit oftheir loss of funds and fortune. Director Martha Coolidge stumbles in her approach to the material. Thefilm's intention bounces between parody and sentimentality. Sometimesit strives to ooze sympathy for its ditzy protagonists and rolls outthe morals by the bushel. But other times, Coolidge ravages hercharacters with a volley of farcical gags. There's a happymiddle-ground between the two intentions that a better director wouldlikely find: where the believably clueless socialites learn to interactwith the similarly convincing world of middle-class American society. But Coolidge veers more towards the feel of a sitcom, sans laugh-track.Without it, the jokes fall flat. Neither of the Duffs have a sense ofcomic timing and the screenplay doesn't bother with helping them along.Material Girls is so woefully unfunny that not even the heaps oftwelve-year girls could be heard laughing. Just before the film started, I mistimed my restroom break andadmittedly missed the opening minute or two of the movie. I asked mygirlfriend, who'd been kind enough to sit through its entirety, whatI'd missed afterwards in that opening minute. She explained it to meand I felt a deep sympathy for her. She was subjected to two moreminutes of Material Girls, and the thought of any more torture wasphysically painful to me. That's essentially the effect Material Girlshas: it is physically painful to endure. -www.samseescinema.com
I've seen this movie more times than I can count. It's a great movie, which I think you all should see! Don't listen to all of the bad reviews on here, saying that it is a stupid movie, because really, it's not! I'd pick it up today!!!!!!
This review is from: Material Girls (DVD) I would just like to say that this movie was mailed to me in great condition and it plays awesome. I watched it more than once since I received it. Keep up the good work on sending awesome movies.Geri G.
Material Girls was a great movie. It was hilarious and veryentertaining and I don't laugh very easily. I highly recommend it forall girls and guys who don't mind a chick-flick. Hilary and Haley Duffplayed their parts magnificently. They make a great duo. It was likethe movie Cow Bells on Disney Channel but better. It kept my attentionand left me wanting to see it again. I do not, however, recommend themovie to children 10 and under. A lot of cleavage was shown at partsand words were used that children under 10 don't need to hear. It willmake a great present for any girl teen or pre-teen in your life. Iloved it.
I personally liked this film because it describes the feelings of girlswho aren't very "normal". Teenagers nowadays think more in trends thanin other things. This girls find themselves with nothing. The filmbasically shows what problems they have facing real life conditionswhich are everyday life for people who every day go out to work. I alsothink the actresses play well their parts as i presume it's difficultto exaggerate the life of two teenagers who live like queens in theirperfect world. In the end I think the film shows that you need a bit ofeffort to go through life and you can't expect people to do things foryou. This film shows kids that you have to believe in what you want tomake your dreams come true. The filming was also good because it showsthe contrast of the rich part of a city and the streets where peoplewith less economical resources live. I would recommend this film topeople who like comedy, romance and a good story to watch.
I've been waiting so long for this DVD! Hilary and Haylie Duff are so marvellous! Each one of them is cute - but together they are unbeatable. "Material Girls" is my favorit film of the year 2006. It's a funny and nice film for the whole family. Every fan of Hilary and Haylie Duff simply must see that film!In a word: Hilary and Haylie Duff rocks!!!
As a huge Hilary Duff fan, I've always enjoyed her work because she'sso lovable. Unfortunately, Material Girls was almost the type of thingI would expect from Disney Channel not MGM Studios. On the plus side, the Duff sisters were likable in this movie and I came out thinkingthat Haylie was quite a good actress because she really broughtsomething special to her character. Hilary also took a step up andproved herself a little bit more as an actress in certain scenes. Ifyou really like the Duff girls, go see it and have a good time becausethis movie does pick up and get kind of fun but if you're looking for areally great movie, I would suggest you look elsewhere.
Forced to endure such casually offensive nonsense, the viewer ends up slumming it far more than the duff protagonists.
finally drives a Duff vehicle into the land of beguilingly awful.
A Duff movie indeed.
I found the title interesting because the title Material GIrls is asong from Maddona. My mom and I went to the movie....I found it better. For those fans of Hailey Duff she played this as a good piece of thepuzzle. If u were thinking that Hillary Duff always does the same thing she'sdoing the same thing that she always does (Not Predictable!!. It isinteresting there was a lot of metamorphosis in this movie=D.TO tellyou the truth I don't feel like writing all of this gig.BUT I WILL!It's not a movie that you'll say awe I wish I went to the pirates ofthe Caribbean instead, unless you like fighting shows and you're aboy. Before I went to see this movie since people said hardly anythinggood about it I thought I would not like it as much as for instance thePirates of the Caribean.Mostly girls from the age of 6-12 will likethis movies more than younger and elders=).yes great movie if u sawthis message thanks if u agreed or listened OR thought it was funny fora kid to talk like this thank you for your cooperation!
This review is from: Material Girls (DVD) This movie show how these two attractive sisters can make a entertaining film that is good for more than just soft porn .... itake that, back for $2 or $3 it serves as good ,cheap, soft porn , thanks girls ;)
I like this movie because Hilary and Halie duff work good together. I also think that it was a great movie in the sence that sometimes the rich don't always get there way once the rich becomes poor. If you like challenges and romance as well as comedy and sitting with your family. Then this is the film for you. I loved it and I think you will too!
There are some things in life that I can forgive. Such as someonelosing a possession of mine or someone's wolf mauling my leg. I can seethat it is not always the persons fault and as long as they apologise Iwill be more than happy to forgive them. However, for this film I have a slightly different outlook. When I found out that my child was suffering from an untreatabledisease, I decided to treat her to a trip to the local cinema screeningof "Material Girls". It looked like fun and I thought that it mightcheer up my daughter.I was wrong. As soon as the film starts, you feel like you have just beentransported to the fiery depths of hell where there is no return. Theacting is absolutely disgraceful and the diabolical directing is sorepulsive that it feels like Beelzebub was producing it.I have had more fun watching a man burn children. The lack of plotbrought my child to tears and we do not know whether she will recoverfrom the induced coma that this film inflicted upon her. This film makes Street Fighter look like a trip to paradise. Thisappalling film aims high and attempts to be a masterpiece like theglorious film "Creep". Unfortunately it fails and can only be comparedto a tumour.
Well,I Watched "Material Girls" With My Family & My Best Friends LastMonth.. They Think This Movie Is Good Enough.. And I Thought So. I'mActually A Big Fan Of Hilary Duff.. All Of Her Movies Are Comedy,MostOf Them.. And "Material Girls" Shows Something Different & Better ThanHilary Duff Last Movie... The Story Is Funny Although A Little Boring..Martha Coolidge Isn't Good Director,But In The Other Hand,She Can MakeThe Funny Movie Than Her Last Project,"The Prince & Me". I Have DVD Of"Material Girls",I'm Not Rent It,But I Bought It. About The RatingPG,It's Worthy.. PG-13 Is Impossible,But "Material Girls" Is Such AsFamily Movie Too.. And The Only Reason Why "Material Girls" Can BeFlopped Is 'The Widest Release'.. I Meant,Just In 1509 Theatres ??!!!!So Unbig Release... Afterall,"Material Girls" Is Fun Movie With SomeGood Messages In It. Worth To Watch. Enjoy This Fun Movie!
I had heard mixed reviews of this movie, enough to make me curious at the rental store. I give kudos to anyone who's patient enough to watch this movie the whole way through.Material Girls stars sisters Hilary and Hayley Duff as two fictional sisters who are heiresses to a major corporation and the money it produces. The Marchetta girls are the faces of the Marchetta cosmetics company, started by their late father, but that's all they really are - the figureheads. The company is actually run by their father's best friend and the man who holds their company - and fortune - in trust. When a scandal breaks loose regarding toxic ingredients in the cosmetics and facially damaging products, the sisters lose their fortune overnight and become "poor." (Sort of.) But something doesn't seem right... so they take matters into their own hands and investigate the situation. It's hard to imagine that anyone could be so clueless about the real world and the issues that regular people face, but the Marchetta girls don't think beyond the latest fashion or party. They're so self-focused to the point of rudeness, and it's not until the tables are turned that they realize there's a bigger world out there. (And they're still pretty rude and self-centered.) I also found some things hard to believe - from what I could tell, the girls weren't of age (hence the "in trust" issue with their father's friend), and yet they're living in this huge mansion with no one to supervise them but servants. Where's their mother? When their house burns down they don't turn to family, they turn to their former housekeeper to take them in. This movie had potential to be a really good coming-of-age story, if the two Marchetta sisters were allowed to grow up. As it was, once they decided to "investigate," I just skipped ahead on the DVD to the very predictable ending. I was extremely disgusted with their behavior throughout most of the movie and the fact that, in spite of their hardships, they didn't seem to learn anything. They just complained about their situation (no valets? we have to take the bus? we have to clean things?) and still managed to come out on top. There are much better movies out there that actually have the main characters grow and learn something through adversity. This one isn't even worth the space it holds on the rental shelf.
