Middling melodramatic

First off, they killed the one person who wasn't a killer, using himfor the Kansas City Shuffle, so good-guy/bad-guy is out the window andthe film sucks. Any film that does that sucks. They didn't have to. Itwasn't necessary. With all the inventivness this film had, all the deiex machina, all the do-what-you-want-and-nobody-will-notice, theydidn't have to kill that guy so gratuitously. Well, you say, BruceWillis was that kind of guy. So, okay, this film glorifies murder, then. Just shock, that's all that this film was about. The two guysliving opposite each other in penthouses? That's supposed to make thefilm believable? It's like the noise filmmakers use now to substitutefor ideas.

great flick

Wow. What a great flick. I had read some reviews of this and wasintrigued by the cast.Started out a bit slow, but Hartnett did a great job and frankly anymovie with Morgan Freeman in it can't be all bad.To me this was a cross between Pulp Fiction, Snatch and Reservoir Dogs.Bruce Willis was superb as usual, playing a very subdued character.Reminded me a lot of his character in The Sixth Sense. In fact, I thinkthey used the same wardrobe and hairdresser.Very cool noir sorta flick. Confusing to be sure, but rest assured itall ties together nicely with multiple twists and turns. Sure, some ofthem are expected, but some catch you going "oooohhhhh".Mykelti Williamson has a nice little role.I give this movie an 8 out of 10. Hartnett was superb and I almostforgive him for Pearl Harbor.

Fantastic

It's really one of those movies that grabs you and pulls you in.Though, this isn't a movie you want to go take a break and get a drinkor popcorn in. You have to pay full attention or really, the movie islost. I like this about it, I can see how a lot of people wouldn'thowever.Josh Hartnett does a very fantastic job in his role and reallymakes you feel bad that he got stuck in the wrong place at the wrongtime. Morgan Freeman and Bruce Willis both do a fantastic job as well.Overall the acting is grand and I think it's a movie everyone shouldtry and see. I think this is going to be one the best movies of 2006without a doubt.

Lucky Little Movie

This movie shouldn't be as good as it is...Don't let the movie's tag lines and trailers fool you... You'll have a pretty good idea of what's really happening fairly early in the movie... BUT, the script still contains enough cleverness to keep you sitting upright. The script, dialogue and characters are sharp and engaging. And the actors... Superb! No one deserves an Academy nod for thier performances, but they are much more than workman-like. Ben Kingsley was refreshingly good as a Mob boss as was Morgan Freeman. I never cared much for Lucy Liu, but she gives such a good turn as the not shy neighbor that she made me smile during all of her screen time. No, on paper, this movie just shouldn't be this good, but everything from the script to the acting just clicked in very copacetic fashion!

A welcome surprise, Slevin has appeared as if from nowhere.

Bruce Willis, Sir Ben Kingsley, Morgan Freeman, Lucy Liu, Stanley Tucciand Josh Hartnett fill a cast line up every bit as impressive as say,Sin City. Leaving behind the sour taste of Wicker Park, ScottishMcGuigan follows the likes of his own Gangster Number 1 with thisincredibly cool, at times funny thriller that has somehow sneaked intothe cinemas without much of a fuss. Supporting cast includes a verywelcome cameo from a Jackie Brown star and a bunch of UK actorsimitating their US counterpart's accents to perfection. The pairing ofSir Ben and Freeman alone is worth the price of admission, but this isHartnett(as Slevin)'s film and perhaps it should not be too surprisingthat he carries it off effectively. In fact, none of the cast reallyput a foot wrong and even Lucy Liu is pretty adorable (against type ifyou believe the all the press).Despite a reasonably confusing series of opening events, Slevin isessentially a straight forward, neat black comedy of errors(mistakenidentity for one). The dialogue is at times razor sharp and the actionis well shot. The body count climbs steadily as the movie progresses ata cracking pace that never becomes dull. Slevin is thematically similarto a few other choice stories, but like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - Slevinshould be enjoyed more for the ride and the audience should try not toguess ahead of the plot and let it unfold naturally. There will stillbe some surprises appearing even for the most avid film fans but likeso many thrillers Slevin could be ruined from word of mouth. If itweren't for the warm, familiar feel of similar films, this little gemwould be rated higher. Unfairly dismissed by some as confusing, wronglycompared to the legendary Usual Suspects - it's a league apart from themess that was Revolver and doesn't outstay a welcome.Oh, and Willis gets to call someone a 'f*** head'. Great stuff.

Probably one of Hartnetts best films, alongside a brilliant cast of actors.

Lucky Number Slevin is directed by newish director Paul McGuigan. Thisis his third film since Wicker Park and The Acid House, alongside someprograms he worked on for television, this movie boasts to be one ofhis best yet. Paul alongside a quite large list of top classactors/actresses, manage to create this absolute gem of a film, with amagnificent plot and twist to keep the viewer entertained until themovie has finished. The first half of the film is quite humorous; mostly every character isintroduced, and the scene has been set, Slevin (Hartnett) has beenthrown into a case of mistaken identity. Slevin is visited by two rivalgangs, one led by The Boss (Freeman) the other by the Rabbi (Kingsley),and assuming Slevin is someone called Nick Fisher. Nick Fisher is aregular gambler who has a lot of money in the minus column; thereforeSlevin is blamed for this. There is a story set also for the two gangs, they both live across the street from one another, both The Boss andThe Rabbi are prisoner to their own home, fearing what one man will doto the other. The Bosses son is assassinated, so the finger is clearlypointed at The Rabbi. When Slevin comes to meet the boss, Slevin owes The Boss, $96,000 andof course Slevin would have trouble coming up with the money so TheBoss sets down a proposition, for Slevin to assassinate The Rabbi's son"Yitzchok the Fairy", as a retaliation. After this meeting Slevin iscollected once again but this time by the Rabbi's men, and then beingtold he owes The Rabbi a significant amount of money. Slevin now has achoice, if he doesn't kill the Rabbi's son then either way The Boss orThe Rabbi will get to him first so he decides he will say yes to TheBosses offer. As somewhat unreal the story set in the first half seems, all of Slevin's choices lead up to the fantastic climax of the movie. The whole movie is made with a sense of style, dark humour and wit anda feeling that you are in touch with the actors playing the roles. It'show the characters interact, especially the chemistry between Hartnettand Liu, the love story behind it all is heart warming and pleasant, itisn't soppy it's more... friendly. Goodkat (Willis) plays a vital roleon the sideline, apart from him being a world class assassin his partin the movie isn't truly revealed until the plot twist is.Everything in this movie works, though it may well borrow certainaspects from other movies. People sometimes call the twist the "UsualSuspects Effect", for it having a similar plot twist, though don't befooled, it's not an easy thing to figure out unless you happen to beextremely observant. It's the little things that count in this movie, the love for the characters, the sudden change between a humorous firsthalf into a dark and gritty second half, I can almost guarantee youwill be entertained. Josh Hartnett fits the role of Slevin better thananyone of the other young talent around in Hollywood, Affleck or Damonwould have probably ruined the role since Hartnett has that cockinessabout him, along with the right sense of charm that makes Slevin who heis. Lucy Liu, who plays Lindsey, plays a clever and funny "Girl NextDoor" character, which is almost in a way like a female version ofSlevin. The film boasts an amazing soundtrack, which after listening to it fora few hours is very impressive. They soundtrack really shows the moodof the film, the first half of the album being very much more upbeatand slightly jazzy, the second half being much more minor, using morestrings and with a slightly more inspirational sound. Conclusion – McGuigan is sure to be one of the next big people in moviemaking, everything about the film just works, as well as the big talentthat's on screen at one time. In my own personal opinion its one of mymost favourite films of all time, though of course this movie isn't toeveryone's tastes purely due to the familiarity it has to other films, but there is something unique about Lucky Number Slevin, something thatstands out above the movies today, a real gem of a film. It has to beviewed to be believed, and is definitely a movie you have to see"Before You Die".-Fin

Number four out ten

This one is not so hot as I imagined because after having red all thepositive critics I expected a dynamic thriller. I think the movie triedhard to be a suspenseful and intelligent film but it failed ondifferent levels: 1) I didn't feel much emotions or adrenaline because there were toomany bloody bang-bang shots2) It doesn't follow a logical order and only at the end the questionsare solved3) The story is anyway too slow paced and not developed deeply enoughto get a hot mouse and cat play. There could have been done more.4) I don't know why Morgan Freeman, Bruce Willis or Sir Ben Kingsleyaccepted to participate in this very average and disappointingthriller. I saw it on DVD but the day after I didn't remember having seen it. Forall these reasons my final vote is 4/10 and the critics on IMDb are nodoubt too overrated.

Uberhip Underworld

SPOILERS.Embedded in hip, street-thug canon, there is Scorcese's *Goodfellas*,there is Tarantino's *Pulp Fiction*, there is Ritchie's *Snatch* – allperiodically panned for their film stylings, yet garnering indirectaccolades through their wealth of imitators – but if there is such athing as "too hip," Paul McGuigan's *Lucky Number Slevin* would bechoking on its own faux street cred.Sidling past the grandmasters of urban cool, *Slevin* embraces itsinfluences and tilts unashamedly at the zenith of Thug Hip.Sometimes it works, as when danger men like Bruce Willis (as hired gun,Mr. Goodkat) or Sir Ben Kingsley (as crime kingpin, The Rabbi) orateUrban, but sometimes it flails for credibility, as when Morgan Freeman(as opposing kingpin, The Boss) tries to convince he's Bad, or when BoyHartnett (as title character, Slevin) tries to convince he's Hard. The impeccable Stanley Tucci, as the testy New York cop, edges into hipwith his seedy, malign temperament. Lucy Liu is the Girl Next Door (whydoesn't the Girl Next Door ever look like Janeane Garofalo?), astitillating yet irritating as a GND usually is, her contribution to hipbeing a slavish adherence to Gap-generation mismatched clothes; herpresence an obvious element required for gratuitous intercourse andImplausible Happy Ending Protocol. There's a sarcasm at work in the title, for at first glance, Slevin(Josh Hartnett) is anything but lucky, being mistaken for the guy whoseapartment he is crashing in and whisked off with a twice-broken nose(with nary but a bath towel betwixt him and primal exposure) to visittwo of the crime bosses of New York City, and told that he owes themboth large. The Boss makes a deal with Slevin to cancel his debt inreturn for a favor: assassinating The Rabbi's son. But Slevin is notthe low-rent thug they think he is… And hit-man Goodkat is skulkingaround, seemingly hired by both The Boss and The Rabbi, for reasonsunknown… There is something afoot and we can't quite focus our thug-darfor all the misdirection thrown at us by the serpentine style of thefilm-making and the bass-ackwards nature of the film.A million plot twists later, we discover that *Slevin* is a tale ofrevenge. The long way 'round. Events go nowhere and twists add up tonothing, but when the layer cake is baked, the Moebius strip winds upmaking sense - until it tries to make sense of itself. In the lastexplanatory dialog (delivered by Robert Forster) all non sequiturs areaccounted for, with one glaring exception, a mistake on thefilm-makers' part – the motivation of a major player is lacking, to thedetriment of the film's overall enjoyment. SPOILERS...During the movie, we are led to believe that lethal Mr. Goodkat(Willis) is playing both bosses for his own ends (a role much likeWillis' character in *Last Man Standing*, 1996, one of the manyinferior remakes of *Yojimbo*) and that he has "plans" for Slevin, whois in turn being played by the two bosses. In the denouement, it isrevealed that twenty years ago, Goodkat was sent to execute Slevin as aboy, but stayed his hand, unbeknownst to his employers. In the present,Goodkat is in fact aiding Slevin's revenge on the two bosses. The question is: Why? What possible reason did Goodkat have to renegeon his kiddie execution? If it was to groom Slevin as an accomplice,we'd have motivation, but Slevin is NOT his accomplice – on thecontrary, Goodkat seems to be aiding Slevin for no recompense. We canspeculate all we want about Goodkat doing something moral to palliatehis nihilism, or that for the past twenty years, Slevin was in fact inGoodkat's debt until the revenge job released him from Goodkat'sservices. But – as Sloe (Mykelti Washington) tells Slevin - "Tell it tothe one-legged man, so he can bump it on down the road." Speculationschmeculation. In all the smash-cuts and filtered film, all the mind-numbing wallpaperand misdirection (making pretty-boy Hartnett not so pretty with abroken nose or prison goatee), in all the flashing forward andbackward, all the split-screens and strobed scenes, in all thecompositing of dialog from different flashbacks and spine-snapping thechronology for more impactive "reveals," director McGuigan and writerJason Smilovic strangely – but understandably - neglected to giveGoodkat plausible motivation. The movie might have been harder, heavier and hipper were it not forthe discrepancy in Willis' character and the silly girl-boy happyending. Yet it retains its high rating for the obvious effort to createa film more interesting than your average bear - visually, conceptually, linguistically.Best line is Goodkat's reply to Slevin: "I'm a world-class assassin, fuckhead!" because it seems so altogether true - about BRUCE WILLIS. Inone scene, Goodkat, in long, tough-guy overcoat, raises two gunsstraight forward, arms outstretched, furious intent on his face - animage of Bruce Willis as engraved in our minds as Christ on the Cross.Bruce Willis bigger than Jesus? Now that's hip.

A psycho/drama chess game predicated on mayhem and murder

The first part of this film runs so quickly and so loosely without gooddirection that it is a relief when things start to fall into placemidway through the meandering plot. Part of the problem is that thereare a hand full of people who directed this film. I had the impressionthat the people who directed and produced this film spent a lot of timeover coffee with computer software testing over and over again thelogistics of their story line. The gratuitous violence and sex in LuckyNumber Slevin is the crazy glue that keeps the flashback scenes fromseeming completely without relevant content. The merits of the film areartistic expression; the acting and other technical aspects of film arevery good. I was entertained most of the two hours I watched the film;if you can hack brains being splattered everywhere several timesthroughout the movie, and like a suspense/thriller this is the moviefor you.

This is what "The Usual Suspects" and "Pulp Fiction" should have been

Kay well Slevin is having a very very bad day. He goes down on his luckand eventually is pulled into a gang war that he isn't even supposed tobe remotely involved in. To top that a very high profile assassin isinvolved. What will happen to our hero? Will his bad luck last forever?I like thing simple at times but then again there are times when amovie's complexity impresses me. This is a movie that has a verycomplex plot and nothing is as it seems. The acting is very nice and itis always nice to see some of the big names like Morgan Freeman andBruce Willis strut their stuff in this film. If you are really into theaction I apologize as it is mostly talk and speculation but still it isa very good movie and there are still plenty of bodies that pile up. Ifyou would like a clever movie then this would be a good one to see.

Snappy dialog, well acted, and a new breed of Gangster Flick

Lucky # Slevin got going as soon as the previews ended. The dialog wasvery smart and witty with the occasional pun for added humor.Hartnett's best role since Black Hawk Down. The "twist" in the end is abit too predictable. A very quotable movie that will probably see HUGEsuccess when its released on DVD. Both roles. The Boss and The Rabbi could have been written better. Bruce Willisplays a Jackal type assassin excellently and will have you guessing asto which side hes really on the entire movie. Lucy Lui and Hartnetthave very well acted scenes together and sparks fly. Adds a fresh newtwist on the gangster genre.

gaiderdraco 2012-05-04 12:24:46

No spoilers needed, this is the most predictable movie in recent years

First off, let me announce that even fans of this film agree that itcontains the worst interior decoration/wallpaper in the history of thecinema. Now, after the first 15 minutes of the film (entirely pointless becauseBruce Willis tells a man a story for 15 minutes and then kills him(WTF?!!!)), it becomes evident as to the tone and direction of thefilm. But after half of it goes by it becomes morbid and overlyviolent; a polar of it's first half. That's a no-no.The acting makes this to be a kitschy dark comedy but it eventuallytranspires into a bloody mess that was evident from the start(literally, I knew where it was going to end 20 minutes into it). Nosympathy for any of the characters is acquired because they do not askfor any. Also, the lack of a linear storytelling style destroys allhope of a "proper" catharsis. Or even a remotely satisfying ending.I hated almost every minute of this film and if you want to see a"real" revenge film watch South Korea's "Oldboy" or even QT's "KillBill Vol. 2".D.

Without a Doubt, The WORST Movie I've Seen Since Joining NetFlix!!

MAN #1: "Is this a GOOD movie?"MAN #2: "By a GOOD movie, do you mean a NOT BAD movie?"MAN #1: "If I would've meant a NOT BAD movie, then I wouldn't have asked if this is a GOOD movie."MAN #2: "Don't you agree that a GOOD movie has to be a NOT BAD movie?"MAN #1: "So this is both a GOOD movie and a NOT BAD movie?"MAN #2: "With "witty" dialogue like this pasted throughout it, this is neither a GOOD nor a NOT BAD movie."MAN #1: "So is this a movie that SUCKS?"MAN #2: "By SUCKS, do you mean is this a movie that is NOT GOOD?"MAN #1: "If I would've meant a movie that is NOT GOOD, then I wouldn't have asked if this is a movie that SUCKS."I'll spare you the rest: "YES...This IS a movie that SUCKS!" The above "witty banter" wouldn't normally be annoying if only two characters periodically engaged in it. The problem in Lucky Number Slevin is EVERY CHARACTER TALKS LIKE THIS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE MOVIE. Can you say, "Movie written by ONE person who doesn't understand that individual characters are supposed to at least SOUND like they're different people in movie dialogue?!?" Josh Hartnett talks like this...Morgan Freeman talks like this...Lucy Liu talks like this...Bruce Willis talks like this. In fact, you'll want to STUFF COTTON IN YOUR EARS after about the first 10 minutes of this agonizing dialogue. Uggghhh...Just BRUTAL!!Accompanying the abysmal dialogue are more SMIRKS than should be humanly possible by a cast this small. The actors must've had incentive clauses in their contracts that paid them BONUSES for each smirk. It's amazing that someone didn't sneak up behind one of these A-list actors and slap them on the back, causing a permanent smirk on their face. After all, there's an opportunity at least once every half-minute!STILL, the movie could've been somewhat salvaged with a decent plot. Instead, we get this: "Guy makes a bad bet at the track and 20 years later a stink-storm is unleashed." Now who among us even gives a crap about a story like that, please raise your hand. The plot also turns on itself in the last 20 minutes effectively nullifying almost everything you've been led to believe for the previous 1-1/2 hours! Is THAT all that's required to write a "mystery" or "thriller" screenplay nowadays?!? If so, then movie audiences have been dumbed-down beyond the point of redemption...The music score would be hilariously stupid if it didn't exceed that level straight into the realm of PAINFULLY stupid. Imagine listening to an endless loop of music from "The Inspector" in the old Pink Panther cartoons...That's what you get here. It's designed to make you think "you'd better not blink an eye or you're going to miss something!" Instead, I fell asleep at least 3 times trying to watch this 1 hr and 50 min excuse for a movie. I didn't even bother reversing the DVD after the first time when I realized I didn't miss anything except more painful dialogue, plot and The Inspector music...Oh, and at least a couple of dozen SMIRKS!It's simply AMAZING that a cast like this could be so wasted on an effort like Lucky Number Slevin...Of course Josh Hartnett's talent wasn't wasted since he frequently appeared to have tied one on the night before a shoot. And while some will undoubtedly be DUPED into swearing that this is a Thrilling Masterpiece, those are most likely the kind of people you don't want to make eye contact with when you pass them on the street.JUST AN ABSOLUTE WASTE OF FILM NEGATIVE AND TALENT...

Great Film great cast

At last a film for adults and not American teenage boys. This has a plot which keeps you guessing and with the occasional flashback helps keep the viewer up to speed on what is going on story wise.No car chases, just a story unfolding with a large cast and subplots afilm for adults. The tale being told is not hard to follow but keepsyou wondering what is about to happen next. This film keeps youentertained throughout. Great acting with witty dialogue a good score atruly marvelous film.Bruce Willis {Goodcat aka Smith} Morgan Freeman {Boss} Josh Hartnett{Slavin} Lucy Lui {Girl next door} Drama/Action/Thriller with somecomedy. This is well worth seeing one of the best films I have seen in a longwhile. EXCELLENT!

Violent

Lucky Number Slevin is a movie about mistaken identity. Slevin (Josh Hartnett) is having a bad day - he got laid off, found out his girlfriend was cheating on him, etc. Slevin decides to go to his friend Nick Fisher's apartment. Various mobsters think Slevin is actually Nick Fisher. The good points about this movie - the acting was great. From Morgan Freeman to Ben Kingsley, Lucy Liu, Josh Hartnett, and Bruce Willis, they all do a convincing job. The storyline keeps the viewer entertained, and there are some cool twists. There are also a couple of funny lines. The bad parts - a lot of violence, some language and some parts of the story. I can't elaborate on some parts of the story though without giving the plot away. The movie was nice to watch once, if you can handle the violence.

Lucky Number Slevin - the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang of 2006

I think I can confidently say that "Lucky Number Slevin" was the "KissKiss Bang Bang" of 2006. It looked like "KKBB", it sounded like "KKBB",and I enjoyed it as much as "KKBB".The weird thing was that I didn't think I would, namely because of JoshHartnett in the title role. And yet he surprised me, just as Val Kilmerdid in "KKBB", by pulling off a brilliant performance inunderstatement. Compared to the heavyweights - Morgan Freeman, BenKingsly, Bruce Willis, Stanley Tucci - he seemed calm and assuredthroughout. In the scenes with Lucy Lui he was actually quite touching. All of the above mentioned were fantastic by the way, though I wouldhave liked to see more of the two gang leaders, Freeman and Kingsly. But, just like "KKBB", I am a fan of this film because of its script. It is red hot, full of great one-liners and dark humour, with a fewzingers of plot twisting to match. You are kept right up in your seatfor the most part, though it is a little slow to start. The music is also a bit sparse, and the interiors are rather ugly, though this has probably something to do with the look of the film, inwhich case, it kind of works.Overall, if you're looking for a good mystery/comedy/thriller to rockyour boat, and you enjoyed "KKBB", then get this and thank me later.7/10

Immoral?

I would like to detest the statement made by "niuqniuq" that thehomosexual in the film was made to be gay to make the audience not feelbad over his death. He was killed for the sins of himself and hisfather had done towards his family and if you would recall he was notinnocent in the least. He was "getting fat" as they put it off thedeaths of innocent people. The reason he was homosexual was they neededa way for slevin to get into the building in the first place withouthaving a cheesy endless fight scene put in for the effect of action. They made it hold more intrigue in this way. Although this gives farfrom a moral picture movies would be like children's books giving themoral of the story in its entirety.

Koreans got Oldboy, we got Lucky Number Slevin!

Well the first half of this movie reminded me of Hitchcock's 'North byNorthwest' and I repeat again, only the first half. Then this filmtransforms into something different. Josh Hartnett stars as Slevin whois mistaken for someone else by two rival gangs. Obviously he is unableto prove who he really is and he has to find a way to get out of thismess. But just when you think you know it all the story suddenly takesanother turn when a mysterious assassin (Willis) arrives. I just wouldlike to say that Lucy Liu is so sweet in this movie.I just would like to say the less you know about this movie the betterit is.
