Fun, but ...

Just saw the latest Die Hard installment and am a little bit surprisedabout the raving reviews and the Top 250 ranking ... I was not exactlydisappointed by the movie and thought it was entertaining as expected -but this is by no means Top 250 material (and I expect it to drop outas soon as the rest of the voters catch up with the probably lesscritical Die Hard fans ...).Willis again is great in his role, and the clash of generations betweenhim and his hacker buddy makes for a lot of funny dialogue. Also, theaction is fun to watch - however, there are too many letdowns to makethis a real success.Overall, it had too much of a comic book character - granted, thecharacters are larger than life, but for me personally this only worksto a certain degree.Firstly, it is so ridiculous when the hero is being shot at byprofessionals with automatic guns at fairly short distance and getsaway - the car is perforated by bullet holes, but the people in the carremain unharmed ...Then, I really get annoyed by all the hacker and computer nonsense -there is so much cyder-crap in the movie that I won't even startlisting it.Finally, the scene with the F-35 fighter just ruined it for me - thiswas so over the top that it was laughable ...To sum it up, I would say: funny, but forgettable ...

More unpleasant than the notion that Matt's nationalism and manhood can only be validated with a gun, though, is the misogyny that creeps into Mark Bomback's script.

John McClane is doing his thing, and he's very good at doing it...

What really frustrates me at times is, that some people seem to have asort of upper-class relation to movies. Even though, it's somethingthey are so interested in, but they always seem to have the right wordsto express "the feelings of the director's dog, which is reflected inthe pale clothing of the... blah blah blah".This is one of the movies, that has to be seen for what it is. And whatis that exactly? That's John McClane kicking some ass. And he is verygood at doing it.The casting for the various characters are sublime, and especiallyJustin Long is doing a very good job. He reminds me a bit of "Rat" from'the Core' combined with "Justin" from 'Dodgeball'. The writers alsodid a fine job, of keeping all the "hacking expert-talk" out of themovie, which give us the feeling of seeing it from John's side, andabsolutely not understanding anything. Left with the feeling of justwant to blow something up.It is by far, in my opinion, the best of the four movies. I rememberseeing the first one on TV some years ago now, and i fell in love withit. I am not a die hard /he he/ action-genre movie fan, but when I am.It is movies like 'Die Hard' I love to see.And that it because, you have to see them for what they are. They arenot big dramas, character-driven, historical correct movies. They arefor people, who just wanna see some action. That's why 'Die Hard 4.0' (Danish title) is so good. There are only twothings that were a little over the line. And that was the scene on thejet. Where he falls from the truck and lands on the jet... And then thescene where Bruce is (it's nice to see John's feelings, but I liked thebalance from #1, #2 much better) telling Matthew how it's not cool, tobe 'the hero'.That's a bit of a shame, because that's why I like these movies.Because the hero is kicking ass, no matter what...

Pure action

I was expecting a lot more out of this. Yes, it's got action, sometimeseven great chase and fight scenes and stunts ("You've just killed anhelicopter with a car"...), but there are no characters and no story(and lacking a good story, a movie really can't build up any suspenseand tension) - nothing that would make this a "real movie", Die Hard 4seems more like a video game. Nothing that happens doesn't actually hasto happen, nothing is motivated - just a bunch of guys trying to killothers and get rich, and one superhero eventually saving the day. Ihave nothing against the actors: they do a great job as far as thescript lets them, but there's no actual dialogue or conversation oreven emotion - most lines are attempts at making a joke or trying tofrighten someone. When Justin Long asks Bruce Willis why is he doingthis, why he plays the part of the hero, Willis answers: "Because noone else does it, i'm here, so I do it." The movie seems a lot likethis: Why? Because there wasn't yet a fourth one.

Just plain simply DEPRESSING .... :-(

Come on, this gets an 8,0-voting on IMDb ?? Who are those viewers, whothink this is a superb movie ? I saw it yesterday, because I liked thefirst 3 (esp. 1, of course) movies, but it was nothing short of alet-down. Just plain awfully depressing.Willis is still OK, but the whole movie is nothing but stupidpopcorn-cinema. After the overlong 2 hours 10 minutes were over I hadthe impression the producer, "director", scriptwriter and whoever else, set out to make the most unbelievable, ridiculous, unrealistic movieimaginable. The whole storyline is laughably unrealistic (even AFTER 9/11 !) andutterly implausible. It doesn't do the picture any harm, but speaksvolumes about the script that even at the end it is NOT clear, what thebad guys actually wanted: money, destabilize the USA, bring down thefinancial system, revenge, destroy capitalism, ... whatever ? Sure, themotives are unnecessary, it's just an overproduced multi-million dollarstar-vehicle anyway, but still, it shows how little care was given toany "character development".But that's the least problem this movie has. It's plain simply boring, too! The first 10, 20 minutes have some nicescenes, but when the action starts its just run-of-the mill stuff, andmost action scenes are just computer-animated cartoons: unrealisticlooking and completely implausible. That does not create any tension(at least not for me).Besides, its direction is completely uninspired. Who is Len Wiseman ?After this picture I don't care. Tiernan and Harlin, who made 1 & 3,respectively 2, are directors, who know their craft. Especially Tiernanknows his job and has done some brilliant work: DH I, Predator, Huntfor Red October, but obviously he didn't want to do # 4. I understandwhy, with this script. Renny Harlin is no match to Tiernan but stilldid a lot better job than Wiseman. Wisemans direction is plain simplyuninspired.Die Hard 4 tries "hard" for humor, but it all comes over very forced. The dialog is even bad for a silly action flick, all this stupid blablaabout heroes, it just does not fit (it fits into a John Wayne flick, but not into a DIE HARD-movie, it's simply uncool there - Willis looksbored in these scenes anyway, I guess he would have thrown out thisdialogue, if it would have been his decision). The MUSIC by Beltrami is nothing short of lacking ANY compositoryskill, it's just VERY loud and pounding noise, impossible to listen to.A real let-down, depressing to see this last entry. Now I know whyWillis did not want to do a # 4 and am sure no # 5 will ever be made(unless he would need a lot of money). Still, even in this mess of amovie, Willis does come off best, which speaks for him.Nothing anybody has to see, just skip it and remember # 1 (to # 3,which I consider the second best entry).

Live Free or Die Hard is as close as we are going to get to reliving the good old action films of the '80s.

A belated sequel that certainly doesn't disappoint!

I have to say, I'm not usually a big fan of belated sequels to filmsmade years ago - but I have to make an exception here as Die Hard 4offers an amazingly good time and is surely the best of the sequels -possibly even the best Die Hard film period! The film is almostcompletely made up of relentless and heart pumping action sequences, and while it might not be life-affirming stuff, you wont care aboutmuch else while you're watching it - so it's safe to say that the thirdDie Hard sequel more than does it's job! As you would probably expectsince this is the first Die Hard movie of this millennium, the plotthis time round focuses on the internet. Most of the USA is controlledby computers, so naturally they find themselves with a big problem whensomeone hacks into the system and begins a 'fire sale' - in which allthe essential elements of the USA (transport, communication, power etc)are systematically shut down to create confusion and chaos. DetectiveJohn McClane is dragged into this plot when he's sent to pick up acomputer hacker wanted by the police. One of the things I loved most about this film is the fact that it'sjust a straight action thriller and doesn't ever pretend to be anythingthat it isn't. There's no false patriotism or sentiment - it's all verystraight up, just the way it should be! The film is directed byUnderworld director Len Wiseman and it's clear that the man knows hisway around an action sequence, as this film features plenty! The stuntsinvolve all sorts from the standard trucks and cars to helicopters andfighter jets! It's not just the vehicles involved either that makesthese scenes great to watch; someone has actually put some thoughtsinto them so they're not just merely the same old stuff. You've reallygot to hand it Bruce Willis too; he's 52 but fit as a fiddle and neverlooks out of place running round and fighting bad guys. He is joined byJustin Long, who is likable as the computer hacker who spends most ofthe movie running around with Willis, and Timothy Olyphant who is asurprisingly effective lead villain. Overall, so long as you don't gointo Die Hard 4 expecting substance, there's no reason why this moviecan't be enjoyed by all. Its pure action and entertaining throughout, and you really can't ask for any more than that! Just make sure thatyou see it in cinema.

what happened ??

The villains in the first 3 die hard movies were somewhat believablemostly mercenaries, ex-military men who looked tough. In "Live Free orDie Hard" our bad guy is a twenty something computer nerd who happensto be a psychopathic, disgruntled terrorist bent on destroying society. The main villain looked too young and his crew of bad guys lackedpersonality and character. Another user commented "Bruce Willis andJustin Long were a great team. They were as good as the 3rd Die Hardwith Samuel L. Jackson" Not a chance man!! give your head a shake."Live Free and Die Hard" was average like 90% of the movies now a days.. the good ones are far and few between.

Who would've thought a Bruce Willis action movie could still be so much fun?

Yeah, it's not deep. Yeah, it doesn't really advance the world of filmanywhere past what it was in 1980. And yeah, Willis is getting a littleold for this #@$! (his words, not mine). But guess what? You won't care! Die Hard 4 (as it might as well becalled) is so much fun that you will be hard pressed to feel guilty forenjoying it.First, the plot is actually decent. No, it's not GREAT, or original, oranything notable outside the genre of action movies. But it's prettysolid for what it is. With no glaring plot holes, it moves the moviealong at a breakneck pace and opens up a little of "oh my god, could itget any worse?" situations. It adapts the Die Hard formula to themodern age very well, opening up several hilarious scenes with Willistrying to get acquainted with the idea of computers and technology. Itwas easy to see coming but the snappy one liners and balls to the wallWillis performance make for a few cheap laughs. It's often a littlehammy, and fairly cheesy, but it's Bruce Willis and he's at the top ofhis game still.A pleasant surprise comes with Justin Long as Matt Farrel. Originally, casting a nerdy computer hacker as McClane's sidekick seemed like itwould be more annoying that entertaining, but Farrel's a great Yin toMcClane's Yang. It helps that this seems like the exact sort of rolethat Long should be playing.Die Hard 4 delivers. The action is constant and manages to top itselfcontinually right until the end of the movie, climaxing with theridiculous but still downright cool duel between McClane in a tractortrailer and a FIGHTER JET. It's just as over the top as it sounds butyou'll enjoy every minute of it.Watch the flick with an open mind. It's a summer action movie, throughand through, but it's about the best we've had in quite awhile.Sometimes watching a movie just for fun is alright.

Forget Spidey and the Giant Bat, if the world is crumbling, let's call John McClane

John McClane (Bruce Willis) has been attempting a somewhat lowerprofile as a detective for the New York City police department. Hiswife has left him and his beautiful daughter, who attends Rutgers, won't even use his last name, preferring Genero. Yet, one day, the Fedsask him to escort a skilled, young computer hacker named Matt (JustinLong) to DC for questioning. McClane bellyaches at this trivialassignment but soon learns that the Feds got it right. As he isushering Matt out of his apartment in Camden, NJ, all hell breaksloose. A lethal gang of conspirators use some mighty fire power to tryand eliminate the duo. But, they don't know McClane, that's forcertain. When the world is going down the commode, he's our man. Hegets Matt to DC but its not a "drop off and leave assignment". Even theFeds don't know what to do when this gang takes over cyberspace in aneffort get to their hands on the country's money supply...and more. But, they didn't count on facing McClane. This is a nice bookend to theDie Hard series, for Willis can hardly play this character from awheelchair, right? From running a car into a helicopter to besting akarate-chopping female terrorist (Maggie Q) McClane is one of the mostphysical superheroes ever put up on the screen. As such, Willis isgreat, as he knows how to throw a punch and a punchline at the sametime, with ease. The rest of the cast is superlative, too, with TimothyOlyphant just wonderful as the main heavy, and Maggie Q, Kevin Smith, and Justin Long very entertaining. In fact, Long could be the secondcoming of Keanu Reeves, as his pretty boy looks and throw-away humorare very similar. Naturally, the special effects are top of the line, while the costumes and settings are worthy, too. If you loved the firstthree films, your wait is over. McClane is back in town and you shouldsee him ASAP. But, even if you just want to sit back and smile while atrue American hero kicks behinds at every turn, here is the flick foryou.

grand finale to a classic action film series

As with the another recent attempt to revive an '80s action series -'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' - I'm sure most ofus hope this will be the last we see of this franchise - but forcompletely different reasons. "Kingdom' was an embarrassing visit to'been-there, done-that' land with a tired director and a tired-lookingactor tried to relive the golden moment of their action-film prime. So,please, no more from Indiana Jones. Here we have an entirely different scenario. This film is almost asgood (perhaps better, it's a matter of taste) as "Die Hard II." And ifwe don't want to see John McLane again, it's because we don't wantWillis et al. embarrassing themselves the way Spielberg and Harrisondid. We all knew that "Die Hard III" was a pretty weak finale to one ofthe more exciting action film trilogies in American cinema; and I thinkmost most of us should now feel that the real finale to the story ofJohn McLane has at last appeared - he got older; he never remarried; hedidn't end up a drunk; he's still a cop; he can still kick butt in hismiddle age. And the story is no more ridiculous than that of Die HardII or III, but the execution is certainly way above that of Die HardIII. I mean, the action doesn't stop, yet there's plenty of time forplot development and even the quirky, melodramatic characterdevelopment we saw in the first and second films of the series. Also, it must be noted, Willis, who went sleep-walking through Die HardIII, is here again in fine form, complete with true grit andblue-collar wit. He never pretends to b a super-hero, he just getsstuck with a super-hero's role (and plenty of incredible luck, ofcourse).Of course it's outlandish, and a lot of the stunts involve CGI. And hestory is so wild, one reason to hope this is the last of the series isbecause 'out-doing' themselves would mean sending McLane off on amission to mars, and that really would end all credibility. So, assuming this is as wild as they could get, and letting the DieHard series just be what it is - blockbuster action films for the sakeof entertainment - this is one of the best.

Probably the Best Action Movie Ever

Why is someone shutting down the power grid on the entire east coastand causing chaos? John McClane (Willis) is escorting Matt Farrell(Long) a known computer hacker to DC to help stop the madness. Willthey be in time?I have no idea how this movie was made. Was it all CGI or actual stuntsthat were the most impressive of any I have ever seen. I had to duckmore than once to get out of the way of cars flying thru the air orbridges crashing down. Yes, this was all non-stop action, but wait aminute, there was time for actual conversations so I didn't feel likethis was a computer game. No, this was as close to being real as I haveever seen. Most impressive. This just might be the action movie tojudge all others by. I haven't seen Transformers yet, but I believethat is mostly CGI and yes, that is impressive as well from the promosI've seen.Flaws? Well, yes, there were a couple but this is not to take anythingaway from the overall effort. Besides, these flaws occur in all actionmovies. For instance a man with a machine gun cannot hit another manabout 10-feet away from him. You see this all the time. One moreclassic example. Instead of putting a bullet into the enemy to end itall for that moment, the hero gives the opponent more screen-time bytrying to see who knows more Judo or Karate moves. See? Movies could beshortened considerably by a well-placed bullet at the right time,but…..Still, this is a very impressive movie. The acting, dialogue, cinematography were all outstanding, and the pace is perfect. But, makeno mistake about this. This is an action-movie and is probably the bestyou will ever see.Violence: Yes, Sex: No, Nudity: No, Language: Not really, not the hardstuff anyway.

A great movie spoiled by Hollywood typicality

OMG.... I can't believe this movie! This John McClain is immortal, better than the Terminator! :)) I can't believe the director of thismovie just made this character a killing machine, someone who killedhundreds or maybe even thousands of people but he never lost anyoneclose to him nor did he ever got shot. It's a comedy, really. This guyis Superman, even better than the Terminator.I would have really liked the movie if Thomas Gabriel would have shotLucy (John's daughter) in the foot or something while talking to Johnon the phone and asked him to stay away, go move to Brazil or something:)) why wouldn't he do it? Also there were at least 2 occasions to killJohn and that boy, why did they hesitate to "talk before"? This "talkbefore getting killed" is getting too old, I've seen it in hundreds ofmovies! There was nothing to talk about, just press the trigger andmake a realistic movie. Even make the bad guy win, so what? It's just amovie anyway, make it unpredictable! Unpredictable movies are the best.No one likes movies where they can easily foretell what will happennext. Now don't get me wrong, this movie really had great potential, nicestory, I will give a perfect 10 to that, great action, great effects, great actors and everything. The movie was perfect up until thehesitations made by the bad guys. That totally ruined a movie withgreat potential.

James Sanford 2012-04-27 23:09:54

a pretty crummy comeback... (the) ridiculous stunts might have been dreamed up by a group of hyperactive 12-year-olds in the midst of a Red Bull binge; they should not have been staged by filmmakers old enough to know better.

As Action Moivies Go it's Very Good,

Well thought out movie, thoroughly enjoyable, OK OK it's a bit farfetched but don't knock it for that, it is a Die Hard movie after all. No thinking needed, it's a traditional shoot em up and it fits the rolewell. Of course you know the plot before you go into the theatre, Bad Guystry to take over the world, no one can stop them, John McClean picksthem off one by one. I could write the plot but hey, who's complaining? Sit back and watch it for what it isGreat to see Kevin Smith (Silent Bob) in the movie, Must be the mostlines he's ever said in a movie

Tom Erik Høiås 2012-04-26 03:05:13

Pleasant surprise

a good die hard movie that stays true to the genre. even if it is pg13,it still tons of action. the only difference between this one and theprevious movies, less bad language and no gore. but there is stillblood and a lot of violence. and i think every true die hard fan isgonna accept this one without blinking. i gotta say that i wasn't toothrilled with the pg13 rating myself, but i did not actually noticethat big a difference from the previous films. and the perils McClainfaces in this one , really stands alone. and this movie is die hard allthe way! Justin long as the sidekick works in fresh way. he's a wimpbut still "that kind of guy" . he did a great job with comic relief, even dough die hard doesn't need comic relief from other people thanMclane himself. his comments are just priceless. go see this movie, icant believe true die hard fans are boycotting this. they are missingsome awesome action and dialog. cant wait for the DVD release!

Eighties hero still cuts it in a digital age

I loved this film. It's big, loud, brash, exciting & big! I have seenaction films that are better conceived & believable than 'Die Hard 4.0'but this is just damn good huge-budget fun. You can see where theyspent their money making this movie. I must admit that I'm writing thisreview after a second viewing of the film and it got better.John McClane is one of the best original action heroes still going andthis film has the responsibility to hark back to action films of theeighties in the form of dragging John McClane into the 21st Century &the Digital age. It works very well. Looking at Bruce Willis performinghis most famous character is like looking at a time capsule in thewrong film but he makes us believe in him again. He gives new style cyber terrorists a taste of a good old-fashionedEighties action thumping and we…the audience loves it. Hints of theoriginal soundtrack litter the film in places and the inclusion ofJohn's daughter into the script is much needed to give him a personalreason to continue to the end.John McClane speaks of being 'That man' and he proves himself to be oneof the greatest action heroes in the history of film whether you likethe films or not. Obviously this is not as good or pioneering as thefirst 'Die Hard' but it is better than 'Die Hard 2' and on a par with'Die Hard with a Vengeance.' There are so many more stunts andexplosions in this film and that's why we love it, we don't necessarilylove it for the storyline or the logic of the whole thing we love itbecause it looks damn good and the spectacle is a great one.Suspend your common sense & logic when watching this film and see whatJohn McClane provides us with. He gets thrown through windows and outof buildings, shot at by numerous henchmen, fights with a 'Ninja Asianchick', has bombs going off all around him and has cars thrown at him!But coming from the eighties style action films, naturally he survivesto fight the good fight.Where else would you see a car being used as a missile to take down ahelicopter and McClane driving a juggernaut being chased and attackedby a Fighter Jet as an entire freeway system crashes down all aroundhim. Okay, obvious comparisons to True Lies & other high-budget actionfilms but it just looks so damn good on film. This may not be a hugely worthy successor to the Die Hard Trilogy, eventhe filmmakers mention that the script was not written as a Die Hardfilm, but it is proof that Hollywood can still make good big actionfilms and excite audiences with what we see on screen. (A jeep slidingdown an elevator shaft...very cool)It's quite funny in places, action & stunt packed, good fun and harksback to an era where an Eighties cop wouldn't think twice about hittinghis commanding officer. Not a perfect film by any means and slightlyincomprehensible but just good fun! Not the best action movie ever madeby a long shot but a very worthy addition to the DVD collection. 8/10

You know where you are with Bruce Willis. Unlike Schwarzenegger, he won't be moving into namby-pamby politics any time soon. He differs from Stallone these days in managing not to resemble an aborted experiment at Madame Tussaud's
