Set in the Rocky Mountains of Montana in the early 1900s, this is a tale of love, betrayal, and brotherhood. After being discharged, Colonel Ludlow decides to raise his three sons in the wilds of Montana, where they can grow up away from the government and society he has learned to dispise. The three brothers mature and seem to have an unbreakable bond, until Susanna enters their lives. When Samuel, the youngest of the three, returns from college he brings with him his beautiful fiance, Susanna. The eldest son, Alfred, soon finds himself in love with his brothers fiance, and things get worse when he discovers a growing passion between Susanna and Tristan. Colonel Ludlows favorite son, Tristan is willful and as wild as the mountains. As the brothers set out to fight a war in Europe, suspicion and jelousy threatens to tear apart their once indestructable bond.

We have taken some photos of "Legends of the Fall". They represent actual movie quality.
I have to say, to be honest, that this movie touched me unexpectedly deeply.Exposing different levels and attitudes of a human nature, it has a slidesboth to the past and to the future, being well-balanced and so unbelievablyephic, that there is nothing to add or remove. I'm considernig myself as a"non-weeping" type, but this thing leaded me to tears. Anyway, congratulations to workteam!
I have seen many thousands of movies in my life, but there are few thatare able to move me over and over like this movie can. Its theme oftragic loss, unrequited love, and the importance of family rings aneternal bell in my soul. Its visual grandeur, and lessons of holding towhat is good, and following one's inner voice, well overshadow the fewmoments of unusual dialogue. The chemistry between Pitt and Ormond is simply mesmerizing, and GordonTootoosis' narration is impacting and full. Aidan Quinn and HenryThomas turn in excellent performances as the idealistic brothers, andAnthony Hopkins is formidable and down right believable as Col. Ludlowand father of the war-torn brothers. This is a movie that I will watch over and over with the samewonderment and interest, and I know that it will move me to laughterand tears as it always has.
If you hate sad movies please do avoid this, but otherwise I think youshould check it out. It is also LONG at 2 hours, so if you can't takeanything over 1.5 hours, stay away again. This story deals with mentalillness of various kinds, so some things won't be entirely rationalhere and you meet some dysfunction in this movie. If you can handlethose things, there's a great chance you will really enjoy it! It hasaspects of a romance story, action movie, family saga, war movie, period piece, and western--how's that for a little something foreveryone? The problem is that for people who are very into one of thosegenres it can't be all that expect, but Zwick surely did try! I havesome minor gripes about the cuts & directing of certain scenes and howthis affects the storyline (the reason I knock off a star)--which youshould see is very complicated/convoluted if you read the spoilerreviews! The loudness of the soundtrack in some places made itdifficult to catch all the dialog.Although not a "feel good" movie, I thought it had many importantmessages and gave some food for thought. I also applaud the work thatthe screenwriters did in adapting this work and in not being afraid tomake some changes to make this story work on the big screen (thoughsome fans of the book might think them unnecessary/weird). I thoughtthey did a good job. If you have seen the trailers you might expectmore violence or romantic intrigue than what this story is about--thestrength of this story is the consideration of devotion, family andother kinds, and being able to come to grips with the past.
This is THE Best Movie EVER made. I just can't say enough about it. Iliterally find myself transported back to the early 1900's to thatranch in Montana. There has never been a movie that has taken my breathaway like this one. When I watch it I have to set the mod and sit alonequietly in a dark room with only the image on my TV screen. I will notbe interrupted or disturbed. I absolutely fell in love with Julia Ormond and have a little boy crushon her. She is so beautiful and has so much class, and for a Britishactress she hides her accents well. I am an avid fan of all JamesHorners movie soundtracks and this is the best. When I first bought this movie it was on VHS tape, I later boughtanother copy on DVD.Others can have Casablanca, Citizen Kane or Gone With The Wind, allfine films on my favorites list ... but I'll take Legends of the Fallas the most touching , emotionally moving film of all time for Me.Can't wait to view it again and transport my mind back 100 years to apeaceful place. I feel that the movie was real, and really happened.Loved it T. B. Roochester NY
Normally I give my vote at the end of the explanation, but this time I wantto say that I gave it 5/10.I only gave it 5 because I thought the cinematography, music, acting, anddirection were quite wonderful. It was a symphony of talent portrayedwonderfully. I WOULD have; COULD have; and SHOULD have LOVED this movie, but didn't. I rarely knock a movie because of its storyline. Often for theplot, but not for the story or idea itself. So, this is afirst.Okay, true the movie delivers the tale or 'epic saga' of a family ofbrothers and their father but I need more than that. I think this story wasill-conceived. Each of the characters were consistent except for the lead(I've provided a SPOILER section at the end to illustrate this point sodon't read it if you don't want it ruined). I am of the opinion that allcharacters can have some inconsistencies; but the lead role must be solid ifhe/she is to carry the reader or viewer through to theend.***SPOILER***SPOILER***SPOILER***Okay, he's wild and untamable. You can't rely on him because he's thespirit of the bear. But, oh, then he's not. He's the perfect family man. Oh, except he's a bootlegger, endangering his very family that he loves. He's passionate. But wait, no he isn't. He's cold and mysterious and evencruel. MAKE UP YOUR MIND!!! Just tell him how you want him to act andhe'll do it. It wasn't his fault, I think he played each of thepersonalities well; so the movie should have been about a man with multiplepersonality complex; but it wasn't intended to be that. Personally I thinkthat Susannah was the most stable character in the story. If you watch itmore than once, you'll see that she really only loved one man her entirelife; she didn't waver from that even if her actions did. She only did whatwas humanly possible with the cards she was dealt in life (therein lies thereal story if you ask me).SPOILER ENDEDSo, everything but the story was great in this film. It just didn't have agoal. Not to mention it followed the wrong character, Ithink.thank you
Here is what I find out about this movie1> Grossly overrated. 2>Fails to keep u glued to your sit3>Breathtaking cinematography 4>Both Brad Pitt and Hopkins have muchbetter movies than this 5>Background score is brilliant 6>Characterportrayal is weak 7>Keeps you depressed in the end 8>Not one of Zwick'sbest 3 movies 9>Zwick completely failed in portraying the characters ofthe leading ladies.P.S:watch it if you are room bound for months and wanna see beautifullocales.I would rather suggest you to watch Blood Diamond or a Glory oreven The Last Samurai. At least u take home something from there.I
I was a little apprehensive about seeing this movie but my fiance persuaded me. The movie was actually well humored and interesting. I highly recommend this movie to others who can rely on a movie that is actually funny instead of that tool Will Ferrell.
I could not express to you in 1,000 words or less all of the ways that Ibelieve this crap to be the worst movie I have ever seen. I will, however, give you a simple overview.A)Don't just stick to the one plot line, get a plotline, and while you'reatit, get a convincing plotline that has some social significance. The onlyplot that matters at all is the one at the end when the family isdesperateand takes to smuggling. That should have been where the story started, andended.B)Because of all of the plotlines, some not only made no sense but had nosignificance, even if they framed the story, like Triscuit and his bear.Dime-store spiritualism: no thank you.C)Characters didn't play off each other well, or maybe it was the acting, ormaybe it was both. Either way they were too irritating to tell thedifference.D)It got an academy award nomination...in anything! Then again, maybe theacademy deserves drivel like this...I could go on, but that's more than enough ranting. To its credit, atleastit elicited such a harsh response from me! Not even a terrible movie like_Congo_ could do that. Have a good day renting something, but make sureitisn't "L o' the Fault." I wouldn't even advise watching it if someoneelserented it and there was nothing else to do. Go find a nose to pick overwatching this movie.
This review is from: Legends of the Fall (Special Edition) (DVD) a little silly and overwrought at times but if you like epic dramas, you'll be entertained
When I first saw the movie poster and the actors that was involved, Iwas expecting a pretty good story. In that department I wasdisappointed, it's basically a narrow love story that is cliché andvery formulaic. The constant emotional or dramatic music that plays inalmost every scene starts to get annoying after a while as well. Themain highlight of this film is the young Brad Pitt and the makers ofthis movie knows this as well, and not because his character stood outor anything. But because it's the type of movie where the handsome manrides in with his horse and gets the female audiences to drool. Themovie is basically about three brothers falling for the same girl andall the drama that goes with it. The story is also very slow moving andgets tedious after a while, I enjoy some romance movie but I can'treally say I really enjoyed this one all that much. The pacing isawkward like some scenes were cut due to length, so I assume the bookto probably be better. Some critics claim this movie is poetic, but Ijust found it mostly corny.5.5/10
Three Ludlow brothers compete to be the best and maybe to win approval from their hard father, Colonel William Ludlow (Sir Anthony Hopkins). But one brother takes on more of a shine, Tristan Ludlow ( Brad Pitt). Being his own man with his own code, he ascents in a rustic manor to be the one who is first in line. But, fate fights the order. Along comes war and a wonderful love interest, ( Julia Ormond ) Susannah Fingannon who hopes to marry a third brother. An unexpected tragedy wrings wonderful story twists. Early American families and morays. Good stuff! Also stars: Aidan Quinn.
Edward Zwick's epic tale of a family struggling against the internalforces of nature that threaten to tear the family bonds apart is one ofgreat acting, beautiful cinematography and strong writing that coversmany years but doesn't drag on forever like some movies. The cast isheaded by Anthony Hopkins as the Colonel, a former US soldier who dealtwith the Indians in the late 1800s but now feels angry at thegovernment for their way of treating them. He retires then secludeshimself and his family to the remote areas of Montana along with histhree sons. Then, years later, the youngest returns from school withhis fiancée Susannah, played by the beautiful Julia Ormond. This setsthe ground for heartbreak and sadness as well as beauty and love forall these characters. As mentioned before, the acting is superb led by Hopkins, Henry Thomasas the youngest, most naive and idealistic son Samuel, Aidan Quinn asthe oldest and responsible son Alfred, and Brad Pitt as the wild andfearless middle son Tristan. This is perhaps the role that Pitt reallybroke out in and cemented him as one of the biggest stars of our time.Ormond is good too, although it seems she feels a bit overwhelmedamidst all this testosterone. What really gets to you, though, is thecinematography which perfectly captures the beautiful and seeminglyendless landscape that is the American West. Set against this backdrop, there is great drama with war, love, death, and many other aspects oflife in a story reminiscent of Doctor Zhivago or Giant. All in all, this is a great movie very well directed and written andperfectly capturing the era of the time. The ending is a bit ubiquitousbut is still a good way to cap a great story that is timeless in mannerand context.
This one will surely reunite your families together,if your family doesnot go well along.Edward Zwick, what should i say.He has directedanother beautiful movie. Great acting from Brad Pitt,Anthony Hopkins &Aidan Quinn.Awesome performances. This movie is a bit slow though.Butnevertheless entertaining stuff. In my eyes,Brad Pitt rises to theranks after such a terrific performance. The ending is fantastic & thelinking up of the Red Indians with Brad Pitt is just so magical. Hatsof to Jim Harrison, who has written this novel.Screenplay isfantastic. The musical score is very good.Suits the theme of the movie. If you have a family, you love your brothers, you love a girl, you loveyour values. Then this movie is a must for you.Prepare for a terrificfamily drama experience.Exceptional movie.
This movie is really terribly good photographed... the colors arebreathtaking. The score is also really very good, I bought the soundtrackalbum. But the rest.... well.Brad Pitt looks quite good with that long blond hair, but I don't reallylike him, and altough the story has some overdone cheesy melodramaticelements that can annoy you (like the works of the writer RosamundePilcher), it has sometimes (especially at the end) a kind of monumentalcharacter, I mean as if the characters are really legends, that is quitenice. The performances are quite good, but for me this is still a movie for16 years old girls who want to see Brad Pitt and cry.
This movie rambles on, seemingly endlessly, full of ridiculous plotsand subplots and other things that just make no sense whatsoever. Twobrief examples: - at one point, Anthony Hopkins has a stroke or something so he can'ttalk. So instead, he wears this slate around his neck and writesmessages on it. But rather than doing what most NON stroke victimswould do, which is write normally, then turn it around to face hisfamily, he writes upside down and backwards and yet the message comesout in PERFECT BLOCK PRINTING!- when BP and his Native American chick are riding through the canyon, someone like, five hundred miles away shoots a gun, and it richochetsall through the canyon, and finally hits her and naturally, she'skilled instantly. And you have to understand, at this point it is like, the 5000th tragedy to happen to this family. When I saw this in thetheatre, people were actually laughing at this part. Finally, just when you think it couldn't get any stupider, it's "...andthen he was eaten by a bear. That's why he was the Legends of theFall." The end, roll credits. Invite some friends over, get some beer, and have a good laugh - that's all this is good for.
Legends of the Fall is one classic movie. The casts are amazing. The movie itself is very well done and it is one of the best.. The story line is fantastic. If you want to watch this movie with your family, I recommend it. If you want to watch it alone, I really recommend it cause in case you want to cry you don't have to worry about people watching you cry ;)
This film was not exactly a disappointment but things could have beenchanged to make it a much better film. The story is quite flimsy, it'sdifficult to keep yourself interested in what's going on and although BradPitt's performance is good, I thought it was a slight weak. I think themajority of the film featuring Pitt, should be replaced with the superbacting of Anthony Hopkins. He holds the film together, not only as anexperienced actor but also through his character, the father. Parts weregood, for example the vivid horrors of the first world war. After seeingthis, I think anyone can see the horrors of war. However, a bit too sentimental and Hopkins simply didn't spend enough timeon screen, which if he had of done would have improved the filmconsiderably.
What needs to be epic often seems petty and small. Perhaps it was in compensation for this narrative inadequacy that the musical score grew to be sweepingly grand and intrusively ever-present.
Looks promising at first but quickly degenerates into overblown, romance novel style ridiculousness. Brad Pitt's character is especially laughable - a free spirited wildman who ties back his ponytail, enlists to fight in WWI, and cuts the heart out of a dead German soldier.
The beauty of the countryside in this movie is magnificent. The Rocky Mountains of Montana in the early 1900s must have offered challenging experiences as people wrestled with the elements. The movie is the story of a man, played by Anthony Hopkins, who has three sons and is abandoned by his wife. So he sets out to raise these three boys and at some point writes to his wife to say... I know how to guide men through war, but this is much harder...Anthony Hopkins plays the role of Colonel Ludlow, discharged from the war because he wanted to regain some sanity. Therefore, he hates government, he despises the drive to conquer and fight over land, and is highly protective of Indians. This family of men lives out in the wilderness, therefore, nature is the chisel that forms the character of the three boys. They are very close and the oldest two, played by Brad Pitt and Aidan Quinn, are extremely caring and protective of their younger brother, played by Henry Thomas. The younger son goes away to college and there he meets Susanna, played by Julia Ormond [played Princess Guinevere in the movie First Knight]. He falls in love with her and upon returning home, brings her along to meet the family. As she enters the life of these lonely men, she captures the heart of each and everyone. The father is delighted that a refined lady has joined them because thanks to her they read, sing, and enjoy the feminine side of life. But... the three brothers soon encounter the difficulties of jealousy, envy, betrayal and competition for the same woman.Brad Pitt, as usual, plays the role of the man who breaks other people's relationships, breaks hearts all around, but his performance is superb as Tristan... the favorite son.Don't miss it! A 1994 Academy winner for best cinematography, this movie offers the passionate journey into the darkest secrets of love, betrayal, and families.
