John Smith is an amoral gunslinger in the days of Prohibition. On the lam from his latest (unspecified) exploits, he happens upon the town of Jericho, Texas. Actually, calling Jericho a town would be too generous--it has become more like a ghost town, since two warring gangs have driven off all the decent folk. Smith sees this as an opportunity to play both sides off against each other, earning himself a nice piece of change as a hired gun. Despite his strictly avowed mercenary intentions, he finds himself risking his life for his, albeit skewed, sense of honor....

We have taken some photos of "Last Man Standing". They represent actual movie quality.
This is my all time favorite Bruce Willis movie. It is a must see for lovers of gangster movies and western movies too. I loved every minute of this action packed movie. Go Watch It today and remember: "Everybody dies, It's just a matter of when"
walter hill(director) takes bruce willis (one of todays most popular action stars) and puts him in a do or die position.this movie takes place in the late twenty's, in a small town close to the mexico border which gives it a gangster/western type feel.
All the critics hated it. About half the people who have reviewed it here hate it. I'm with the other half. I love this film -- I've watched it at least seven times and it's still entertaining. It kind of reminds me of people's reaction to Chronicles of Riddick -- I happened to love that film but critics panned it and a lot of people thought the film less than stellar. There IS a moral center to the film and, yes, this is essentially a remake of Fistful of Dollars (one of my favorite films).Bruce Willis does a great job playing the cool, opportunistic mystery man on the run (from who knows what). What you'll find out about 10 minutes into the movie is that this is going to be a shoot-em up with fantastic gun play. Over the top, glorious and very cool double fisted Colt 45 action with clips dropping from the handles kind of gun play.Acting is well done Dern, Willis.. heck, just about everybody did a good job in this film. These aren't no name actors.. this is quite a cast and I'm only sorry this film has been given such a rough time by a lot of folks. If you don't like violence, can't stand pulp fiction heroes, a dark story line, and don't like mobster movies/westerns then don't even consider this flick.
The movie isn't too bad (It's an OK movie) but compared to "Yojimbo", the movie on which Last Man Standing was based, it pales in comparison. If you must buy this movie make sure to also pick up "Yojimbo"... Just my two cents.
Last Man standing is simply amazing, I didn't think much of the DVD caseatmy mate's house since the spine and front cover looked like an action manfilm, since it was bright orange. But right from the start when John Smithpulls up in what seemed like a deserted town called Jericho, but we soonseeDoyle's gang smashing his car, but little did Doyle's gang know John Smithis overwhelmingly lethal with his two guns. The film then carries on withSmith getting familiar with the way things work around Jericho, he learnsthat the town is run by two opposing gangs in an effort to rule Jericho.Smith then plays an incredibly smart game when he pretends to work for onegang, but then switches sides to work for the other gang. Smith then findsout that the only way of surviving is to be independent, and he smartlyfools both gangs by the brilliant climax. This film has a really effective atmosphere that makes us feel the strongtension, with an old western feel.Simply put Bruce Willis heads a great cast into producing a classic film,it's a must see for anyone who really appreciates gangster films, and yetagain tremendous acting from especially Bruce Willis!
Although I saw this in the cinema several years ago when it first cameout,I feel compelled to add my comments now, because this is the undisputedworst film I have ever seen.It has a legendary status among people I know, because a row of eight ofuswho went to see it were all asleep at one point.I never thought someone could make a 'blockbuster' with a big name starthatstill managed to be brain-numbingly boring, but Last Man Standing achievesit with ease.Instantly forgettable characters, a one dimensional linear and at timesnonexistant plot, and absolutely nothing redeeming to keep the viewerinterested in where the film's going. If I wasn't so comfortable in the cinema chair drifting into a semi-sleep,this would have been one film I would have had no qualms about walking outof very early on. Perhaps it's sleep inducing properties are referred toinits title.Message to the writer and director. If Bruce Willis has such ridiculouslyperfect aim and gun control, even when in the throes of making love, itgetsa bit boring. There's no excitement in it.If Bruce Willis had just lined the whole cast up before the opening titlesand shot the lot of them it would have saved a bit of time and wouldn'treally have missed much from the plot.I've never seen the trailer to this film, but even that would be too longtobe worth watching. The worst thing about it? Unlike other shockingly bad films like Spawn,BoneCollector and Hollow Man, it doesn't even afford the viewer the chance tolaugh at how bad the film, the dialogue, the acting and the plot are, because it's just too boring for words. One out of ten, and that's being generous!

First of all I would like to say that people have to high expectations.Films like this are not made to win oscars. There mostly guy films, withhigh action and lots of sexual preference. But this was a solid film alltogether. Willis gives a solid performace and so does Walken. The actionscenes are extremely good and provide much excitment. I gave this film an8.
In this movie, one of Willis' best, he kicks a$$!! It was one of the best movies I had ever seen!! the time or age was perfectly fitted for the movie. Great actors, and great script!!!
Having just watched this film, the story line to me is identical of theSergio Leone film "A Fistfall of Dollars". The plot is so similar, tworivalgangs, a misfortunate, a woman with a child etc etc....The film is worth seeing as it is played well with a good cast, and stillworks well within the era it is set.
In prohibition times, a mysterious stranger drifts into the ramshackletown of Jericho on the American-Mexican border, run by two rival gangsof bootleggers. Sniffing paydirt, he hires himself out to both factionsas a gunman. Can he stay one step ahead of the hoods ?This is a stylish, hard-nosed gangster reworking of Sergio Leone's 1964Per Un Pugno Di Dollari / A Fistful Of Dollars, which was a westernremake of Akira Kurosawa's 1961 ronin classic Yojimbo (and all threestories bear a lot of similarity to Carlo Goldoni's 1753 comic play IlServitore Di Due Padroni / The Servant Of Two Masters). It cites theJapanese film as its main source, but is essentially a remake of both;storywise it follows the samurai movie (for example, Walken's characteris identical to Tatsuya Nakadai's), but visually it's much closer toLeone's (lots of guns). It's own hard-boiled style, with raspynarration and a town full of grifters, also comes from noir fiction(say, Dashiel Hammett's 1929 pot-boiler Red Harvest). In this sense,it's more of a series of cultural references and motifs than a movie, but it's still a lot of fun, remaining faithful to the classic tale ofthe mysterious pragmatic avenger, and the hybrid gangster/westernsetting is very original. Willis lacks the mythic qualities of Mifuneand Eastwood, but is pretty good in the lead, with able support fromSanderson and Dern. The two best performances are by Hill regular Kellyas the head of the Irish clan (there's a beautifully tender momentwhere he expresses his unassailable love for Lombard whilst his goonslook embarrassed) and the ever-reliable Walken as a nutty red-headedwhispering psycho. This story will always be appealing because it slylyblurs the divide between hero and antihero - he helps and exploitspeople in equal measures. Slickly written by Hill in his usualtough-guy patois, with a strangled score by Ry Cooder, top-notchstuntwork by Allan Graf and great dusty sepia-soaked photography byLloyd Ahern - surely this is the brownest film ever made. Well worthcatching, but don't miss its two predecessors, particularly Yojimbo(the hardest to find), which is one of the most engrossing,stylishly-made and funniest mythic adventure movies of all time.

Totally copying clint eastwoods Fistful of dollars, the part where he saves a lady is a clone, the part where he goes to the richest for money is a clone, this movie is a clone, a stinkin clone
Set during prohibition, a dangerous drifter (Bruce Willis) passes through a town where two rival gangs are tearing the place up. After riddling bullies with bullets, he finds himself hired by both gangs. In order to get more money, he cleverly works for both gangs. When his cover is blown, he must fight for his life. This update of Akira Kurasawa's "Yojimbo" and Sergio Leone's "A Fistful Of Dollars" is perhaps the most intense out of all of the films. Packed with hyper-kinetic gunfights, this is a must for any action fanatic. Bruce Dern *who has been in many Walter Hill films) plays an excellent supporting role as the sheriff. If you like this film, you should also see "The Killer". However, it would be interesting to see both "Yojimbo" and :A Fistful Of Dollars" before you see this. Overall rating: 5 starsRated R for strong stylized violence, language, and sexual encounters with nudity.
LAST MAN STANDINGDIRECTOR: WALTER HILLSTARRING: BRUCE WILLIS; CHRISTOPHER WALKEN; BRUCE DERNLast Man Standing is one or the best Walter Hill movie. 48 HR. was nothingagainst to this action packed gunfighting movie. It´s about a mercenarynamed John Smith (Bruce Willis) who comes in the little town Jericho inwhich 2 smuggler gangs rule. After a gunfight both gangs want to have Johnin their rows. and on and on...This movie is kind of John Woo movies. Superb gunfights and you don´tcarehow much bullets are in that Baretta. It´s a usual popcorn movie. AND IT`SBETTER THAN EVERYBODY SAYS!!!!!!!sascha booker
I've become a big fan of Walter Hill's movies and this one is as goodas ever. It's not a particularly cheery film, but it's still enjoyable.Bruce Willis and Christopher Walken are both terrific in their roles.Walken plays as good a bad guy as ever, and Willis is good as theambiguous lead character. The gun battles are staged excellently and the music by Ry Cooder worksvery well with the picture. It's very much a guy film, though. Thereare only two women who play big parts in the film, but they don'tappear very often.I give LMS 7/10. It's a moody piece but enjoyable.
I saw this movie origionaly on a VHS rental from Blockbuster back when people still did that. When the DVD came out with Widescreen and 5.1 about 10 years ago...I snatched it up. I just watched it again recently and I still love it. I love the great dark voice over and I realy like the dark deep heavy base Guitar soundtrack as it fits the movie perfectly. Bruce pretty much kicks butt and does a great job updating a classic Yojimbo/Fistfull of $s story to a action packed mob shoot 'em up. Also, unlike what the Amazon reviewer said there is humor as well, but like the whole movie its dark and dry. When Bruce talks to the "skirt" about what a sweet guy he is or when he tells Doyle's men he doesn't understand why nobody likes him because he's "such a nice guy" made me laugh outloud, as did when Walken says he isn't Doyle's best man only the best lookn'. The complaints about what happens to the guys getting shot being knocked back probably have never shot a 1911 handgun. Ask any weapons expert what happens when you get shot with a big slow fat bullet like a .45 ACP and he'll tell you that it will knock you off of your feet. Thinner faster bullets tend to go right through you, but a .45 shot from a 1911 has the right mass to velocity ratio to stop in the body and thereby transfering all its momentum into the victim knocking them off their feet and onto their back. Now I agree it is exagerated in the movie, but heck it is a movie after all. The only complaint is that this DVD is now showing its age and needs to be updated soon and hopfully to Blu Ray with some decent special features, because there aren't any on this one.
I've seen this film and I was quite impressed. If you're not too critical "those of you that have to have "A Passage ToIndia" each time you go to the movies"....stay away.If you're looking for a fast action tale about gunslingers of the 20thcentury that will keep you guessing the ending while the body countclimbshigher and higher. Well you've found the right movie.:-)
Okay let me get this clear, I have this wierd obsession of gunfighting, not just gun fighting, but to be more specific dual weapon gunfights. A gun for each hand, to me that is the pinnacle of badass. When I see a action movie I don't care about explosions, attractive women, or stupid car chases. I hate all that garbage American directors throw in thier films. I wanna see gritty no holds gunfighting. I enjoy either a realistic gun battle (Way of the gun, Heat, etc...) or all out unrealistic (The Killer, Hard Boiled, The Matrix, etc...) So combine the gritty dirt quality, with Bruce Willis only fighting with two pistols, and lack of explosions, you can understand why I enjoy this movie. One thing this movie has, that is not used enough in action movies is the depressing voice over, like in the video game Max Payne. That game would make a damn fine movie.
Last Man Standing has an interesting cast and setting, but it onlymanages to mildly entertain. This is purely a man-night movie for BruceWillis fans and not much else.As far as a piece of cinema, this film was lacking in a lot of ways. The plot was paper thin with generally flat characters. The movie takesplace in a Texas border town going ghost town in the prohibition era.Its only inhabitants anymore are two rival gangs, the barman, a feweasy women, a corrupt sheriff, a grease monkey/gas station attendant, and the mortician. In comes a wandering gun-for-hire, and the actionbegins. The setting seems a little confused as a gangster/westernhybrid, so the plot can only be expected to be a battle to fit thetitle. Most of the characters are pretty typical of the gangster andwestern genres. The few that you attach any interest in don't change atall from beginning to end (except for one secondary character). From a director's/cinematographer's angle, I don't think the film everdecides what it wants to be. It tries to emulate noir with theanti-hero male lead complete with his voice over narration. Thisdoesn't really work out because the film lacks the moodiness of noir.It tries to be a western with the gritty feel and quick-draw shootouts. It tries to be a gangster film with the bullet happy murders and anorganized crime power struggle. Separately, these are great, but Idon't think both fit well together in this case.If you're looking for a few one liners, cheesy shootouts, Bruce Willisor Christopher Walken, then this might be your film. I would say givethis film a chance in general, but you should not expect to see aquality film from this.
