I -Like- this movie, why the low low low ratings, some people say itsunrealistic But.... its real to me, iv gotta say this to those peoplewho say its unrealistic, when I was 15 years old we robbed shops, people getting stabbed and stuff.... But in a place like this its easyto get up to no good "aha Just Saying" people try not to judge becausestuff like this happens all the time, if you cant enjoy or relate tothis, then, you missed out on your childhood and id say 70% of this wasmeant to be funny with a mix of innocence, life lessons, gritty, underground, grime life styles this is worth watching listen learn andtry get to grips with the "Super Super Story" 3+1=5
This film was shrouded with copious amounts of negative press when itwas first announced last year in the national press. Some may say thiswas justified, as Kidulthood covers underage sex and teenage pregnancythrough to 'happy slapping' and teen drug abuse. However, with itsgritty direction and superb script, Kidulthoods sheer brilliance cannot be ignored as it depicts Londons troubled urban youths withterrifying realism. The street language, which may put many viewersoff, acts only as a reflection of the cultural divide which is apparentin London (as shown in the superb scene in a Burburry store!) NoelClark, star of Dr Who, plays super-thug Sam superbly, a performancethat could only be topped by Aml Ameen who acts with terrifying menacejuxtaposed with beautiful sensitivity as troubled teen Trife. This ismust see British cinema! 10/10
I have seen a bundle to Brit flicks that show a hyped by stylishglamorised side of London . Should be Lock Stock , or Snatch , or maybeeven Notting Hill these movies have always shown the romantic side ofLondon . However that Ladies and Gents is only the sugar coated topping, there is another world underneath that what is known to most of uswho grew up on the streets of London as the real world . The directorof Kidulthood does a masterful job giving us a vision of the urbanhell-hole that we have all come to know ! The social issues that arehighlighted in this film are spot on , whether it be the drug abuse ,teenage pregnancies or the ever looming threat of the gang culture withthe idiotic craze which is known as Happy slapping .We have all readabout , seen it and, probably worst experienced it . Kidulthoodpresents to the viewer a true , grim , depiction of a life a 15 yearold black teenager Trife and his life growing up in the toughneighbourhood and school where words come cheap .We are taken into hisworld for just 1 day and meet a whole host of characters who fit intothe doomed path of life probably just like Trife . The acting was overthe top brilliant to the point where to me personally it felt that itwas not a film but you were watching someone's life unfold in front ofyou as the director chose's location's that were truly urban nitty andgritty to the point that you don't need to marvel at the breath takingscenery , you just want to focus as the story rolls along . I'm not ahuge fan of Uk hip-hop but this time it seemed to fit in and add to theflavour of the film . The only drawback was that it was a little toover hyped and once or twice it did feel a bit unrealistic in someplaces but it stood on track and the humour was pretty funny in placesas well especially with the white hoody guy. In general Kidulthood is adeep , dark , depressing look on the darker side of London's youth andby looking at it one will walk away probably wanting to take a lookback at his life and see where is his or her future heading for .Kidulthood is highly recommended film by not only my-self but severalother movie lovers and I shall very likely purchase this when it hitsthe DVD'S.KIDULTHOOD SCORES : 8 OUT 10 FOR NOW THIS IS THE SHADOWMAN WISHING YOUALL GOOD LUCK AND GOOD NIGHT .
STAR RATING: ***** The Works **** Just Misses the Mark *** That LittleBit In Between ** Lagging Behind * The Pits When a girl who has suffered horrific bullying at school commitssuicide, it leaves 15 year old Trife (Aml Ameen) and his two friendswith the day off school. Trife starts the day by learning the unwantednews that his on-off girlfriend is pregnant and the baby might be his.Frustrated at hearing this, he sets off with his friends and embarks ona day of increasingly dangerous mischief. Juxtaposed with their storyis that of his girlfriend, her qualms about keeping her baby and hermoral free mate willing to do anything to score money and drugs. Theirpaths are set to collide and result in a devastating climax.Kidulthood has that look and feel of a film out to shock (it managed a15 certificate, but it must have only just scraped it!) If it'spainting a picture of what life is really like for chavvy kids likethis living on housing estates in inner-city areas, then the filmmanages to leave an even more downbeat and depressing taste in themouth than it already did. It's well-acted enough, with a good lead inAmeen (who I recognized as Officer Lewis from The Bill-wouldn't havethought he'd come off as a 15 year old though) and a decent supportingcast, including an attractive presence in Madeleine Fairley (but, whatcan I say, a chavette's a chavvete!) It has a fine soundtrack, too, including some notable work from Mike Skinner and The Streets. It's farfrom a bad film, as it is, too, it's just so relentlessly bleak andwith little in the way of humour and light that it never manages tocome off as a truly enjoyable experience in any way. Still, it deliverswhat it says and more. ****
As a black girl living in London, I saw how this film portrayed reallife. In the scenes at the beginning, in the school, I could relatefully to the events. People may not think that it truly representsblack people, or schools in London, I beg to differ. You obviously havenot been in a bad enough school. The language used in the film, theslang, is a part of life now. I look at schools on the telly and wishthat I do not have to call everyone 'blud'. If I do not, I will getbeaten up for 'trying to be white'. Kidulthood was a fantastic film, showing, yes, a different way of life, but a true representation of it.It was actually quite unnerving at how similar life is for my communityto that of the film.
It was a bit disappointing mainly because I was pleased to see a filmlike this being released but it didn't live up to its full potential,Music on the film was fine as was the acting but the story was prettybasic and you didn't feel much for the characters despite how real theyseemed... it was a very realistic film and was done very well but itdoesn't live up to its hype and we're still yet to match films such asBoyz N Tha Hood/Menace II Society. Its on par with Bullet Boy butnowhere near the quality of Snatch/Lock Stock, Very basic story whichthe UK Video industry is yet to master, One day we will get it right,On day... Doesn't deserve too much negative criticism as its a genreI'm interested in. 6 out of 10 seems fair to me.
I don't know why this movie keeps getting bad reviews. It is brilliantand heartbreaking especially with Katies fate. I live in London and Ithought this movie did an excellent representation of what SOME schoolsin London are like.It has a strong story which you cannot ignore from start till finishand it really makes you want to keep watching just to see what happensto the characters although I did find the ending a little predictable. It might be a little strong for some people as there is drug taking andextreme violence but these only help to show the a message to kids:This is what you could end up like if your not careful. I do think thatit was little daft in places but it was still amazingly realistic. Imean I do know people who act like the characters in this film and dotake drugs and steal from shops. It really touches you inside and makes you really think about themessage of the film. I'm 16 and people I know who have seen this filmhave really been moved by it and now they really think about how theytreat other people. I mean its not like I'm a chav or anything :)People who have rated this badly obviously have missed the point soshame on you. This is easily the best film I have seen this year and Icant wait for Noel Clarkes next movie :)
If you need a reason not to come to London or more reasons to get outthen watch this film. Granted its a well made film but its a well madefilm that highlights everything that is wrong with current life inLondon and indeed in Britain. Crtitics will argue that the filmenlightens those who perhaps don't realise what goes on in teenagerslives these days. Drugs,Sex,Bullying,Crime are all things touched uponin the 89 minutes screened however the majority of people who watchthis movie are those living the life and this only leads to promotingthis kind of lifestyle. The movie itself is entertaining enough andvery well acted if you think an hour and a half of 15 year old hoodrats running around town causing trouble is entertainment. personally Idon't and neither should the people who made this. proper whack innitblood etc
this is a gritty take on teenagers in London this film isn't afraid toshow what its really like sex and drugs, violence, swearing and abuse tothe adults of London this film mainly revolves around 3 soon to beadults who get into trouble in the mean streets of London they stand upto this bad boy called Sam who isn't afraid to hit the ladies and beatthe crap out of you if you do anything to hurt him our to his family.this film is a thought provoking mind trip that will want you to watchit over and over again.also if you are amercian or from another country you will not fill thewhole affect of this movie like the British do
Readdress the balance, superbly acted, thoughtfully written and welldirected. This is one scary movie for all parents in London or anyother city. Noel Clarke is a rare talent both as an actor and a writer. His portrayal of the gritty, urban reality of growing up in London iswonderful. More British films should be a lucid and honest asKidulthood. I thought the direction on the whole was very good althoughI think that too many filmic effects took away from the story and wereshowing off the directors skills instead of the the actors skills andstoryline.Good work.
Just saw the film, and I must say my opinion on the film wascorrect .Awful . Not only do they use an inexperience and down rightawful cast, they also had an unrealism story line. The only good thing about the film is Jaime Winston. Her acting andportrayal of a 15 year old is great and is the most entertaining aspectof the film compared to other cast members who are not capable onkeeping the film on their shoulders. Aml Ameen, Red Madrell and FemiOyeniran all need to get acting experience as their work was justplainly dreadful. This film had potential to be wonderful with the right cast, directorand change of the storyline well let's just say this Isn't the BritishVERSION OF CITY OF GOD, KIDS OR LA HAINE.1/10!!!
This has to be one of the best films that i have seen for a long time.It had a brilliant script, excellent young actors and even the musicwas British, which makes a good change and it really helped to set thescene. The film is based on what is really going on in places where welive, but which people tend to dismiss and the film gives a brilliantinsight. To have a down-to-earth film with all the qualities that thisone possesses makes it a film you will not forget. The film doesn'tpromote violence; it is purely showing the reality of what is alreadygoing on, and it does so really well. It really opens your eyes to whatis going on and makes you take much more notice than before. The filmwas even better than how it was depicted in the trailers and isdefinitely a must see. I've watched it several times since i bought it,and it only gets better.
Unrealistic, stupid and funny (it is not a comedy, so it should not befunny :)).I guess the most important thing in creating such movies is the feel ofreality. Well, you will not find any kind of objective and rightviewpoint here. The movie is like an illustration from scandal sheetsor TV shows where you can see only criminals and their crimes. Alsothis film can be considered as a piffle of old retirees (everything inour times is bad, you can be killed around every corner, and everyonewill try to rob you as soon as you will leave your home at night). Inthis way, movie reminds some kind of propaganda. Well, I live inLithuania and I guess in my country criminality problems are moreserious than in UK, but gosh ! I don't think it is very possible tofind fifteen year old pregnant girls, sluts, robbers, hooligans,self-murderers, mobsters, drug users and other degrading people in oneschool.Such scenes as love scene with pregnant girl, and death after that isvery stupid. Also scenes where characters glooms after falling out withfriends, or after cutting human face, looks ridiculous.I liked one thing in this film. There were some good music. But I hatedthese scenes when movie is shot like a music clip. It looks veryfacetiously in such an "austere":) movie. The girl, that attempts to have sex with every man, hooligans withtheir dialogues and behaviour and a lot of other things looks absurdly. So, if you want to see imaginable life of young people, see this.Othervise, check out City of God.Sorry for my English
Its the Uk version of kids, I think thats the best way to sum it up ,not saying its a rip off of kids or anything . But if i would have tocompare it to another film its right on. it hits the crap side ofgrowing up with a west London twist. The characters in the film are isnothing i would invite home for dinner. i would hate to bring a childup in a atmosphere Like this . I can relate to the movie kids whilegrowing up . I was in my teens when i first saw the film . THis shoes aside that if in fact exists and if there is people like this then amajor reform should in fact take place in order to save the youth inthe uk
I think that Kidulthood was a very strong film and violent film abouthow teenagers grow up on the streets. But a good film in the way thatit shows how life is on the street of Britain these days with knife andgun crime around. I thought that all of the cast gave very powerfulperformances. what i found shocking shocking in the film, was when oneof the girl's classmates commits suicide. Due to this everyone in theschool has the day off. This means that Trife and his friends get to goaround shopping and getting themselves into trouble along the way. butthe day ends in disaster for someone. I would recommend people to watchthis film, to see for themselves how true to life this film really is.
This is a prime example of how British movies of this type should bemade. You do not need fx or blue screen to make a raw movie that packsa punch. This type of movie will mainly appeal to the younger generation ormaybe people from my age (Am I still young?) from the early 80s.Without spoiling anything of this movie... Just think of The Streetsalbums meets Kids (The movie) and you will have a small idea of whatthis movie is about.I would recommend follow up movie Adulthood which really does go in awhole new direction but keeps to the heart of this movie. For me it is well worth a 10 as it is a perfect movie for the youngerBritish people...But to answer my question: Proud to be British? No, not when watchingthis movie... But this is a real British movie of the 2K Generation. Thanks, Lee
If like me you have despaired at the way that the London has beenportrayed in films over the last 10 or so years this film is a Godsend. This is a London that truly reflects the city as it is today andnot as it was in the 50s, like films such as Notting Hill, Wimbledonand Love Actually to name but a few. Added to that the film isn't tobad considering the recent track record of UK films. Its a bit likeLarry Clarke's Kids meets Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing with addedGrange Hill (a BBC Children's drama programme)all set in & aroundLadbroke Grove & Harrow Road, London. The film tells the stories of a number of kids given the day off schoolafter a girl kills herself after being bullied. What ensues over thenext 24 hours includes a relentless tide of booze, drug taking, underage sex, stealing as well as Gun-crime. And not once is there anypreaching or moralising that is left to the viewer to make there ownmind up on.The performances in the main are some what workman like however twoperformances stand out, that of Aml Ameen (Trife) and Jamie Winstone(Becky). Of the two, Winstone is some to look out for because on theevidence of this film she has a bright future. Director Menhaj Hudahandles things well from Noel Clarke's first time script, again bothare to be looked out for in the future. The film also has a firin'Soundtrack by some of the UK's Hip Hop & Grime artists, giving the filmthe feel of a US production. As I said in the beginning this film is an antidote to all those fayRichard Curtis film's we've had to endure over the last few years. Onehopes that the filmmakers get the opportunity to make more like it, ifnot in the UK in the US.The film is definitely one to check out if you can.
What I've seen in a film is Afro-Arab cohort of adolescents, well fed, well dressed, well-hilled for popular public out-eateries, bored,drug-consuming/dealing, already engaged in a casual sex with naturalconsequences and illegal activities while passing the buck, fightingin-between-around, bulling teachers, killing each other and driving aninnocent blonde fellow-schoolgirl into suicide. However, they are befriended by a native drug dealer, a fellow nativepupil-prostitute, and being happily hooked by native clerks. To what extent this movie reflects a modern British reality alreadydepicted with "Shameless" and "Little Britain" for instance, is of nopractical possibility and intention me to conclude, but such a moderncolored segregation of young Britons (are they at all?) definitelyallows suggestion that freedom of _expression undoubtedly reigns on allwalks of life, of which schooling, cinematography or locally job-hiringthe ethnics are.
Bloody right. There are things to be believed and some... OK GB, especially London are amongst the worst places to live in theworld. Most expensive, most depressive, most stressing and so on. Andeven British citizens can say this is a film about reality. I disagree.I guess there's a great script, pretty good performances, a great scoreand beautiful scenes and shots, but, blood... if this film was toportrait British reality, GB would be much more than f'd (amazing...how many times is this word used in 50% of the films we review and it'sstill a banned word... hahahaa).So... no Big Brother at all... no one's ever caught. I mean, not evenin one friggin' day. Girls that are supposed to be fifteen are prettywell over twenty... Sam is 35. For Pete's sake. No kidulthood at all...this is all adulthood in a hooligan world. If Britain were to be what is depicted here, it would be a full-timenightmare. And... it is not. Yea, it's depressing (London, so far, isas hell), dark and stressing, but, please, this is not how kids arethere.I know that for sure. I know lots of British kids who are as normal asmost kids in the world. Many of them, to say the least, are great kids. And there are no "kids" here, at all. Families are not as stupid asthey're supposed to be (according to the film) I can't say I don't like the film, but it's not much more than what wetell the world in our films (in Mexico): gritty, dark, obnoxious, hardand a bit over the top. That's how we paint the world, but we live in avery nice country with very nice people. Would a cab never, ever stop for a black kid? Not true. Would anybodydo what these kids do in the stores they "visit"? No. Are there manyparties that end in tragedy every weekend? No. All in all, Kidulthood is just a film that takes old clichés to the21st century and, accordingly, uses the appropriate music, slang, clothing and settings you would expect for a new film. Nothing new. No updated views. No original storytelling. Well done, that's all.
This film is brilliant. It shows the the lives of teenagers growing upin London in the most shocking but in the most realistic way. The storyline is brilliant is suitable from the ages of 15-whenever. It was madein under 800,000 (A very small budget for a film of this quality). Thecinematography is amazing, the director uses all sorts of differentcamera angles and effects, and also has a completely British soundtrackwhich helps give the movie a better feel to it as well as the stylishcinematography.Watch it, it is fantastic, and will leave you thinking about thing inlife, and for many teenagers out there who watch this film, they willmost likely be able to relate to the film and to what the charactersare going through, because like i said before it is so real.Dill
