too sweet

I think this movie was probably one of the most romantic films Ihave seen lately. The costumes were wonderful and althoughthere were some scenes that could have been omitted, overall Ithink the movie was a success. It makes me fascinated to learnmore about India during that time, and not many movies have thepower to get me that interested. A great film for a rainy day, or towatch with a loved one... an 8 on a scale of 1-10.

For fans of "Lost" and "Rome" ...

This film features two Bollywood actors who have since garnered a certain amount of recognition in the USA. Fans of "Lost" will recognize Naveen Andrews (Sayid) as the Raj; fans of Rome will notice Indira Varma (Niobe, Lucius Vorenus' wife) in the lead role of Maya, the servant girl turned courtesan. Both of these actors can also be seen in the delightful "Bride & Prejudice."

Watch it on MUTE

Okay, so the plot is cliched and the dialogue is stupid, but you can'tdenythe fact that this movie is visually beautiful. It was filmed very well, andthat more than makes up for the script. The costumes are wonderful, thecinematography and art direction are fabulous, and the actors are pureeye-candy. If you're a prude about movies actually having a point, pressmute on your remote control and make up your own story as you go along. You're left with the same impression AND you don't have to stomach thedialogue.

Indira Varma the most beautiful woman in the world?

The only reason for getting this film is to see the actress Indira Varma. In my opinion one of the most beautiful women in the world. She is the star of the film and she makes it special. She should be in more films!!!

A Lush Exotic Film (slight spoilers..)

A very lush, exotic, film. Breathtaking cinematography and amazing costumes.Performances are so-so though. The Prince keeps yelling "Bring me the headcourtesean" at least 10 times. See a princess go crazy and the many ways ofpleasure in the bedroom. Indra Varma's pubic hair has more personality thansome of the supporting cast and you get to see an elephant stomp a man todeath. Don't expect anything too hardcore. It's more showtime-ish stuff. It is agood story though, downer of a ending. Recommended for people that liketheir movies slow and unfolding instead of some slam-bam crashediting.

Incredibly vivid and erotic....lush and stunning...

While there is some question of plot, I think that the simplicity of the love story is one retold in faerie tales throughout history, and this was very much like a faerie tale. I found the movie erotic, stunning, and sensuous. The photography was brilliant and the scenary and sets, incredible. As a theatre major, I myself, found the acting quite acceptable. This is definitely not porn--if you're looking for pure T&A, I wouldn't rent or buy this movie...but if you appreciate erotica with a lovely story behind it, then definitely watch this film.

Exotic, Erotic, Etc

This movie is so hauntingly beautiful in everything from the camera shots(looks like moving art) to music. The heroine, Maya, is gorgeous and sheisshown quite naked quite a lot, which adds to the enjoyable quality of thefilm.

Near-zero relevance to the concept/book

As a movie, this is just about less than OK. As to why the film makerchose to have the name "kamasutra" in the film title is pretty obvious.1. To grab attention 2. To get international recognizability 3. To geteveryone interested enough to buy a ticketUnfortunately, the storyline has absolutely no relevance to thephilosophy of the ancient Indian book. Just having a total of 7 dialoglines which are nothing but snippets from the book, does not make it aKamasutra tale. However, international audiences would find novelty in the film simplybecause of its portrayal of Indian colors/settings/customs (albeit witha creative license). However, film audiences who have seen enoughmovies will know a good film when they see one and this one will not bepart of that list under any circumstances.Yes, the name and imagery may be enticing but if you watch the moviewithout expecting a great deal, you would be on safe ground.

Culturally offensive sex movie directed at the uninformed

What amazes me most about "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love," is that it is an Indian movie set in the 16th century that has nothing to do with the real India of that time period. Its director Mira Nair is a member of India's elitist, English-educated intelligentsia, who as a matter of fact is trained like them to regard pre-colonial Indian culture with contempt and scorn. In this film, she decided to paint a fictional picture of a medieval India based on one 6th century Indian text on relationships. From this one source, she justifies her portrayal of an "exotic" India with promiscuous women and debauchee kings, apparently with the goal of making money from an uninformed, international audience who want to see sex on the big screen and leave feeling that they've seen a fine film. Somewhere in this story is a plot about alleged double standards in gender relations, sexual mores, and the whole bit vis-a-vis traditional Indian culture, apparently to reinforce the feeling that Kama Sutra is a intelligent, cultural criticism instead of dull, soft pornography. It would have been nicer if Nair had had the ethics to try and represent the Indian setting more faithfully, rather than weaving a false tapestry of so-called Indian civilization to serve as the background for what is essentially a money-making, sex movie. It is bad enough that the characters are bland and that their actions make absolutely no sense. What is truly shameful is the way in which customs and attitudes are invented by the writers and implicitly passed off as "Indian." For example, there is NO such thing as a "dance of enticement," as Indian dance in general has a spiritual, devotional basis. Of course, Nair would have none of that since movies about Indians worshipping God through dance don't sell. Similarly, Hindu kings did NOT smoke hookas (that was a Muslim custom), which makes it harder to swallow the idea of the drug-addict, debauchee king. The prayers chanted in the Hindu wedding are NOT actual Vedic prayers, but rather poetic verses taken from a devotional composition that was written 100 years after the time period in which this movie was set! Hindu queens did NOT encourage their sons to maintain courtesans and engage in womanizing. Nor could kings become debauched without losing the respect of their ministers and subjects. Sex was NOT seen as casual fun in traditional Hindu society, but rather as an allowance for procreation by married couples. The list goes on and on....There may be some who might think they know better, wanting to cling to their fantasy of a sexually-liberated India. All I can say to these sadly misinformed people is that I've actually lived in rural India (unlike people of Nair's ilk), and as a scholar of Indian literature I know what I'm talking about. You cannot claim that the India of Vatsyayana's Kama Sutra was the real India when you ignore the bulk of other Sanskrit literature (Mahabharata, Ramayana, Puranas, etc) which tell a very different story. Nair lacks the honesty to represent Indian culture as it is, because she is too busy trying to weave a story about sexual double standards interwoven with tantalizing sex which ultimately fails to be anything one could be proud of. But then again, truthfulness isn't really the priority; showing nude Indian women as sex objects is. Congratulations Ms Nair for turning back the clock on intercultural understanding and respect for women. I'm sure you've made a lot of money. I just don't know how you can look at yourself in the mirror.

Beautiful Love Story

A beautifully atmospheric film with a gorgeous and exotic cast, Kama Sutra comes across as more of an erotic soap opera than anything else. Mira Nair, who also directed "Mississippi Malsala", paces her film with a slow and deliberate burn--much like the passions which ignite between her film's characters. Mira Nair directs a very powerful and talented cast and she has created a beautiful, colorful, cinematic tribute to love and its consequences. While some may find the plot too familiar, I really enjoyed the performance of Indira Varma, playing the lead role of Maya, the servant girl. The beautiful and sexy Varma does a credible job building her character from a naive, young waif into a strong, independent woman. Ramon Tikaram. I think he steals the show with his beautiful portrayal of a passionate stone cutter who falls for the mesmerizing courtesan Maya. The tension and chaos between characters is thick and real. This DVD has a moderate number of features like wide and full frame formats, director's commentary, a theatrical trailer, filmography, language selection, and animated interactive menus. The story was heart breaking, and the impression it gave me was lasting. Kama Sutra is an absolute feast for the senses...the lush settings; exotic costumes and erotic interplay are absolutely stunning. This is an excellent movie to watch with a lover....one you'll want to see over and over.

Beautiful and Sexual

This a beautiful story about childhood friends that become sexual rivals at maturity. It shows you what life was like in 16th century India. Sad, but uplifting.

A visual feast rather than a sexual one

The title is a little misleading and I would have appreciated more culturalinput for this era. The character of the Raja was a slightly unconvincingbut the Kama Sutra education was fascinating.Saw the movie on TV first and hunted down the DVD. Wonderful, appropriate(to my mind) ending. For romantics of the operatic kind.

Wow..Amazingly Gorgeous Film

Mira I tip my hat to you. One of my all-time favorite movies. Through your labor of love you have produced a one of a kind masterpiece. Great performances throughout. Very colorful and visually stimulating movie. Absolutely wonderful sets and costuming. The sex is only part of the spectrum, so the movie doesn't really exploit sex but gives insight on how sex affects the lives of the characters. Fabulous commentary from Mira that really gives insight on what she wanted to accomplish in the film. Great DVD mastering job from the film print.

If you like Bollywood movies.....

I'm not a big fan of Bollywood movies.... I've seen only a couple that I could stand. This movie to me felt like an attempt to create an Indian style melodrama that deals frankly with sex as a tool for feminine empowerment. Mira Nair's intentions are good (she arranged women only screenings in India), but she winds up with a nicely photographed Bollywood movie with sex scenes replacing the musical numbers. Is this a bad thing? It just depends on how much that style of melodrama appeals to you. It doesn't work for me much, but I can go for the sex instead of musical numbers, though. It reminds me of some Bollywood movies (not to mention Hollywood movies) that deal with serious subjects by simplifying it and stripping the issues of it's depth so that it can be easily consumed by the masses.

Not That Great as expected

I expected a lot from this movie but failed to enjoy the movie. The hero and heroine did very well but the over all x rated one is not our expectation. I bet most of the people expected a lot more but in vain.

Krapa Sucka!!!

This is without doubt the worst movie ever made. The title is the onlythingthat is interesting in this movie. The sex scenes will make you stopwantingsex. No sane person can watch this movie without fast forwarding throughit, and still you are left with feeling of horror.

N-Jac 2012-05-15 12:18:19

Beautiful, sensuous and tastefully done.

This movie is fabulous! There are a lot of sex scenes (as one may guessfrom the title of the movie) but they are tastefully done and express thecharacter's emotions (love, anger, or fear, etc.) The best line in themovieis said by the Queen: "I do not love you enough to hate you." Beautifulpeople (why isn't the man who played Jai in more movies??) and a solidplotline. Don't miss this movie!!

2012-05-15 05:56:03

Visually stunning but not much more

I could watch this movie over and over again if I turned the sound off. Though some of the love scenes are a bit cliche for my taste, the director does a great job of bringing out the beauty of these women and the beautiful setting in which this movie takes place. The script is somewhat insipid, and the story could use some creativity. If your looking for a mediocre love story you don't really have to think about, this movie is for you. if your looking for something with a little more quality, i'd pass.
