David Rice is a high school student in Ann Arbor, abandoned by his mother at five, enamored with Millie, a fellow student, and picked on by at least one classmate. On a winters day, while about to drown, he discovers he can transport himself instantaneously to anyplace on earth. He leaves town, goes to New York City, robs a bank vault, and comes to the attention of a shadowy group of government hunters. Eight years later, the hunters, led by the murderous Roland, get a fix on David. He heads home, searches out Millie, invites her to travel with him, and only later realizes that Roland and his crew are seriously deadly. Is everyone close to David in danger?
There's Samuel L. Jackson with frosty white hair snarling, 'There are ALWAYS! CONSEQUENCES!' That's worth some money, I suppose.
A lot of people are saying this movie was bad. I thought the movie wasabove average (not THAT much above, but above) just because thefighting was cool and the imagery was amazing. The Colosseum issomething to look at while they're there, as well as the sphinx. Theending definitely was put there for a sequel, they weren't very subtleabout that. I am a Christensen fan, but his acting was not his bestthis time, although it wasn't horrid as most are saying. Jamie Bellstole the show for sure, although his character did seem a bit odd attimes. Rachel Bilson was nothing to look at really, her acting wasmediocre and boring to say in the least. All in all i rate it about a7. I've seen it twice to tell the truth, and i would watch it again.
This is one of a very small number of films that I could not sitthrough. Sold on its special effects, which aren't that impressive bytodays standards to be honest, the film has absolutely nothing else tooffer. Alaborious, convoluted plot and terrible acting mean that thisfilm is literally a collection of images on screen featuring the worsttype of acting.Do yourself a favour and do something, anything, else but watch thisfilm. Even the great Samuel L. Jackson cannot save this turkey. Icannot emphasise just how bad this film is. Avoid at all costs, even inthe bargain bin.
This is again one of those movies where i think a little tweaking ofthe plot,a little more thought put into character development,a littlemore responsive acting by the actors could have made this moviebetter. My imagination went wild hearing the concept of the story.Ibegan to fantasize a lonely hero with the ability to transport himselfanywhere puts to use his gift to rescue the world.I know it soundscliché but when you throw in the fact that the guy could "jumpanywhere" opens a Pandora's box of exciting possibilities Sadly thewriters couldn't do much justice to a potential story.I didn'tunderstand whether the film tried too hard or was a half heartedeffort. The most obvious flaw was the mediocre acting.( There's laughingin my head). It made Hayden look like a complete confused fool.PoorMillie had nothing else to do but being pushed around by revengefulPalladins and love hungry jumpers. Also the storyline seemed like beingtaken out from a daytime action from cartoon network. No characterdevelopment,no stress on the story and the concept, and no concernwhatsoever of audience's expectations makes this one a mediocremovie. It could have been but was simply not impressive
With the plot of "Jumper" recapped several times throughout this Amazon review section, let's just "jump" right into my thoughts on this little bugger. Blink-and-it's-over movie, blink-and-it's-over review... appropriate no? Anyway, away we go... This fast-paced (but not ridiculously fast-paced as the trailer seemed to indicate) "X-Men" style adventure is worth a look for its solid premise, edgy characters, and exciting confrontations. I especially liked the occasional nods in the direction of character complexity: Hayden Christensen's "Jumper" character maybe isn't the basically nice guy he initially seems to be and Sam Jackson's relentlessly hunting "Paladin" character maybe isn't really as bad as HE initially seems. In other words, maybe Jackson's character is right and all past jumpers HAVE become rotten eggs- dangerous rotten eggs- after a while, and need to be put down. Clearly much was left open for exploration in a sequel. Strangely, some of that exploration could have been done in this very movie, as it's only an hour and twenty-nine minutes long. Could it have killed 'em to give us ten more minutes of character material and background info to supplement the generous (and, admittedly, very well done) action sequences? At an hour and 40 or 45 minutes, this movie would still have been lean and mean, but also a little richer. Still, "Jumper" is worth a look for fans of super-powered characters and gritty adventure. The DVD features a full screen print on one side of the disc and a widescreen print on the other. A variety of engaging special features pepper both sides of the DVD.Review over. Quick, huh? Time for me to jump outta here...
Ignore the previews. Unless there was a drastic change of storyline in the editing room at the last minute, the final cut is a lot more interesting than originally advertised.
I went into watching this movie with lowered expectations. After all, this film didn't do all that well in theatres, and from information I had read/heard, the film itself was started and stopped and then restarted again with virtually everything about the film changing in the process. Basically I expected it to be a bit of a train wreck that likely couldn't live up to the relatively neat promise of the main premise: the star character was someone that found he had the ability to teleport anywhere instantly.Pleasantly enough the movie doesn't do a bad job in delivering a fun ride. Sure enough, the star does have the ability to teleport anywhere but his ability comes with potential consequences as there are people who believe that no one should have the power and ability that he, or others like him, has and those people will stop at nothing to permanently stop 'jumpers'.Hayden Christensen plays the lead role here with Samuel L. Jackson (with bright white hair) playing the leader of the opposing side. Christensen does well enough in his role, and Samuel L. Jackson delivers a solid enough performance as well. Add in reasonable performances from the supporting cast, mix with some action and adventure in the form of good vs. evil fight scenes set in exotic locations and you get a movie that does a reasonable job delivering on the responsibility of being entertaining. No it's not academy award type stuff, but it's good enough. Were half star ratings possible, it'd be 3.5 for me. Without the half star rating system, I'm rounding up to 4 stars.Picture on the Blu-ray disc looks quite nice. The movie is relatively short, with a somewhat family friendly PG-13 rating which seems mostly related to the action and violence in the fight scenes (and perhaps a little related to a scene that finds the female lead stripping her shirt off...) Little or no objectionable language.Turn your brain off a bit going in and you should find Jumper reasonably entertaining. Certainly worth a viewing via rental, though thanks to a load of extras, the Blu-ray package isn't a bad purchase.
The movie, JUMPER, describes this situation quite adroitly & metaphorically: Here's an "innocent" (Lamb) teenager who accidentally discovers that he has the supernatural ability to physically JUMP to different locations in the world. OTOH, there's this jealous & bitter "group" (gang) whom thinks it's unrighteous to have this ability and hunts (stalks) the JUMPERS in order to kill them because of their JUMPER abilities. And the moral of the story is, IMO, the worlders have a whole army employed to search-n-destroy the ones with GOD-given gifts: It can't be any more conspicuous than this!!!
Can we just cut to the chase here? Hayden Christensen has all but killed his career with his performance in Jumper.
Jumper is pretty slick, entertaining stuff, well-crafted by Liman, edited into a tight, action-packed bundle of nerviness.
This movie is one of those movies that are purely entertaining. An easyto follow popcorn flick, with a lot of action. The movie sadly lacks everything else that makes a good movie. The ideais quite nice, but that is stolen out of a book. The rest feelsconstructed, empty, and almost totally without emotions. The story hasbeen told like a comic-animation for 10 years old. That's how littledepths it had. There has rarely been a movie where I cared so littleabout the characters.5 Points from me means, that I personally find it worse. But anexpensive production with so much fun action is still entertaining andobjectively, deserves a bit more points.
The movie's reviews have been rather mixed by both critic and audiencemember alike, from what I've seen. The plot seemed forced to me. Ihaven't read the book, but I'm guessing a lot of the characterdevelopment was what was shaved, leaving the movie feeling drawn out atpoints to me, even though it was only 89 minutes long. The specialeffects were good, and the acting was decent.Lots of people have been pretty hard on Hayden Christensen. I thinkhe's a young actor with a lot of potential for both talent andchemistry. A recent interview with Brad Pitt comes to mind when he saidhe wasn't overly happy with his early work because he wasn't very goodin the roles, but without them, he wouldn't have grown as an actor. Ithink the onus of being Anakin Skywalker has put a lot of pressure andscrutiny on him that I, personally, don't think is fair or deserved. Ishe a stellar actor? No, but he's getting better with each role, and tome, that's the most important part. I'm by no means saying he does agreat job in this movie. He has sparks of real genius, but by far, he's"okay." Rachel Bilson seemed like she was trapped in another "O.C."episode, and Samuel L. Jackson was absolutely atrocious. I'd ratherwatch a 24-hour marathon of "Snakes on a Plane" before seeing himbrutalize another character like this.Bit parts by Michael Rooker and Diane Lane seemed strained to me. Bothdeliver their usual competent performances, but in the scope of things, their contribution to the plot was marginal at best. Jamie (sp?) Bellwas by far the standout in this film. I'm not overly familiar with hiswork, but he was extremely entertaining and brought some much-neededspark of upbeat into the film, likely saving it from an overall weakproduction.
I just returned home from seeing Jumper with my valentine and we bothagree it was a prime example of a good concept gone bad. Theteleporting from once place to another was fascinating and could havebeen so much better in the hands of better actors, writers, anddirectors. There is no doubt that Hayden Christensen is a bad actor. He isextremely wooden and emotionless. He definitely drags the movie down. They should have just continued the movie with the actors used to playthe characters when they were younger (especially Annasophia Robb). Some of the teleporting effects were highly entertaining and well doneand that is what makes the movie worth watching. In short, go see itfor the effects and try to ignore the acting (especially the laughablelines given to Samuel Jackson-- "It's time to send you home to mommy!")I almost died laughing :)
A young man learns that he can "jump' (instantaneous transport, or teleportation) from one place to another. He just needs to be able to visualize where he wants to go. Eventually, he can "jump" into a bank vault.Goodbye, work!Eight years later, he finds that he is being pursued, slow but surely, by a group of people dedicated to purging the world of these abominations. You see, he's not the first. And when I say "purge," I'll not talking about a timeout. The rest of the movie is the story of the harrowing escapes, and battles, between the jumper and his pursuers. Throw in a bit of a romantic interlude, and you've got your story. What really helps to make this story work is the action, and the intentional omission of any attempt to explain how these jumps happen. I mean, you don't have any conflict with physics when you don't try to explain... the physics!Entertaining. Actor Hayden Christensen jumps well, and pursuer Samuel Jackson is, well, just scary.
At first, I thought Jumper looked quite interesting. Then, when I heardmany negative reviews about it (one of them coming from one of my bestfriends), I was letdown a little. But one night, with frankly nothingin my heart, I entered the movie theater with a close friend of mine,so that way if we hated the movie, at least I'd have someone to talkto. Many, many times I walked in and out of the theater door, saying tomyself ''Is this a good idea, or will I just lose 9$ for the fun ofit?''. So, after thinking a lot of times, I took 10$ out of my walletand I finally decided myself (my friend was decided long ago). Was it such a bad idea? Well, no. I really liked that movie. Well, Imust say that I sometimes don't really care about the movie synopsis.Well, not sometimes, usually. As long as I understand the story, Idon't mind. The young actors are really convincing (Well, HaydenChristensen was a lot more convincing than Rachel Bilson, but at leastI spent a good evening because of both of them), action scenes everyminute and a really great bad guy (Samuel L. Jackson) make this moviereally worth to check out. Just remember that this is a supernaturalthriller and not an ordinary action movie.
When i thought of watching this film, i had my instinct on it being ahigh-power thrilling chase across the world by amazing teleportingindividuals...let's just say i was right about some of it.I watched the film and was tempted to walk out of the theatre about 30minutes through it. The narrative is very very slow from the off-startand you aren't sure what's happening. As the film progresses, the narrative is reasonable but is very weak.If someone demanded that i back up such an 'offensive comment' then Iwould merely point out how you get people with an ability toteleport...and nothing else. They're teleporting, yet at the same timethey are being chased by professionals. Answer me this, how do youchase someone who can teleport anywhere in the world and have theyheard of wanted posters? However on the flip side of the coin, i wasvery impressed by the performance of one Jamie Bell. I think hisportrayal of an independent 'soldier of fortune' was fantastic and hischaracter was most entertaining. To conclude i would say that half way through the movie...you'll wishyou could 'jump' into a different movie altogether!
Jumper never contends with its biggest liability: the fact that its main character is neither a lovable rascal nor a fascinatingly dark antihero, but just kind of a smug tool.
David Rice has a special gift - he can "jump" (teleport) himself from place to place. He abruptly discovers his gift as a high school aged kid (Max Thieriot) escaping death-by-drowning from an icy river. At first he doesn't believe what happened, but when he escapes the rath of his drunken father in the same manner, he decides it must be real. This is his ticket out of this broken family (his mother left when he was 5) and this small go-no-where town. But, a teen ager on the run in New York will have a tough time living without a job. So, David hones his skills and finances his independence by robbing (jumping) banks. The story skips forward to find our 25-year old hero, played now by Hayden Christensen (Anikan SkyWalker/Darth Vader in Star Wars II, III), extremely skilled in his jumping ability. He's now a world wide playboy jumping to multiple countries and playing the field. Enter our arch enemy the "CIA" operative Roland Cox (Samuel L. Jackson) bent on destroying all "jumpers" on earth and you have the backdrop for any graphic novel. Throw in David's old high school flame Millie (Rachel Bilson) and an experienced loner "jumper" Griffin (Jamie Bell), and you have some unwilling team mates set against Roland. What follows are some 100 jumps in multiple CGI executions covering some "20 cities in 14 countries" (Wikipedia). The action is certainly there and the directing for these rapidly moving scenes was fairly tight. The cinematography was very good and the CGI was woven nicely into the action. The screen play was a little lacking, so the actors didn't have much to develop or shine, save Sam Jackson who always makes the best of what he's given. But, at least the film keeps you interested as you're taken for a ride across the globe. Don't look for any academy awards here, but this one might wet your pallet for a weekend do-you-have-a-movie-where-things-blow-up fix. The end might leave you wanting the sequel, yet for others it may leave you wanting to know where the return envelop is. For me, I had fun.
Oh dear God.Good points: Jamie Bell is a really good young actor but wastedhere, though scenes with him in them are at least watchable.Bad points: your life is too short. . .Yes, good idea put forward in the novel. Yes, good one-line premise forthe Hollywood execs to get excited about. Yes, the idea appeals toeveryone, even though some of us would use it only to zip from nudistbeach to nudist beach around the globe (now, THAT'S the film I want tosee, and be in). . .Here, well we get intellect-light, sub-mtv TV fodder with Hayden Vaderdoing an incredible job as a planet-jumping shop-window mannequin.Eh? Oh, hang on, I just realised that wasn't intended. Strike a pointfor the vacuum hogging the lead role.Sam Jackson's in it. With white hair. In a pre-production meeting, tengets you a hundred that was mentioned in the same sentence as 'cool'more than a few times. Oh dear. Eyes roll.Plot holes? Swiss cheese. Car jumping. Contradicts the film-world'physics' but who cares about consistency when there's a new twist toput on a car chase?2 out of ten. 1 for Jamie Bell easing the torture. 1 for the hook. Instead, go watch a holiday (vacation) programme. You'll have more funchecking out the locations they jump to in the course of the show. Andthe presenters will be more interesting than the poster boy for thedark side; or 'Bland Side' as it should be known, a far more terrifyingprospect. "Watch my films, Luke". . ."Father! Nooooooooo..."
