brilliant story

This review is from: Julie & Julia (DVD) I went into this movie quite sceptical, but it a brilliant intertwining story of the 2 women. I watched Julia Child when I was younger and had no idea how facinating of a women she actully was.

Good movies, like good food, can spoil quickly.

This movie could have been absolutely charming. Meryl Streep and AmyAdams are fun portraying the title characters, and the two men do afine job in their supporting roles. The format of the movie "jumping"from Julie's story to Julia's story was a bit annoying at first, butoften clever when juxtaposing their lives' similarities. The movie was ruined, however, by taking a generally light-hearted plotand throwing in vulgarities. Do we have to be subjected to "hair in ourfood"? Even the producers of the movie seemed to be aware that viewersmay not believe nor well receive one especially vulgar comment thatJulia Child made, because they added a "footnote" in the script byhaving Amy Adams' character say that Julia Child actually said that, asthe comment was found in a letter. I don't doubt that she DID say it,but did we have to be subjected to it in the movie? I think the moviewould have been much better without the vulgarities and a PG rating, rather than the PG-13. I'm not sure that the more adult rating broughtany more people to the theaters to see it.I guess someone just put too much picante in the pate, and ruined thewhole dish.

Celebrates cooking, writing, life and love

Julia cooks and Julie writes. "Julie & Julia" is one year in the lifeof Julie Powell (Amy Adams) and many years in the life of Julia Child(Meryl Streep). Both stories of course have many parallels and the filmplays that up.I really connected to Adams in this film. Her character is just sorelatable, and the film on the whole is very funny. I don't care muchfor the art of cooking, especially rich French cooking with all thatbutter, but I do love how the film merged writing and cooking. ThroughJulie's story, showing us how a hobby can turn your vocation into anavocation. It's emotional and inspiring. I even have to admit that thefilm is partly responsible for the creation of my own blog."Julie & Julia" celebrates cooking, writing, life, and love by showingus both of their supportive husbands played by Stanley Tucci and ChrisMessina. It's beautifully shot and well written and a joy to watch. Irecommend it to all the fledgling Julie Powells out there.Follow my blog Napierslogs' Movie Expositions athttp://napierslogs.blogspot.com

Great movie, especially for cooks

I have to write that when Mario Batali is mentioned in the movie therewas a very strong wave of laughter and comments "...what a joke","...he's not in that league" went through the theater. I do agree. /Ido not think the writers meant it to be a joke. Maybe if they had putsome pine nuts on it and made up an Italian village nobody has heard ofit would have worked./ Really good contrast of Julie's grungyQueens/Long Island City, NY & Julia Child's Paris. Sorry to read JuliaChild thought it was opportunistic and somehow using her and her nameto gain notoriety. I think it was a homage to Julia and towards thevery end of the movie Julie gives a clear answer for why she went onthis quest.

I HATED Julie...should have just been JuliA and JuliA

Maybe it's not fair for me to judge this movie because I don't watchthis stuff to begin with. I'm all about action, sci-fi and horror. Ionly watched this house while I was pet sitting and there wasabsolutely nothing on. Anyway, here goes: Meryl Streep as Julia wasgood. I never have anything bad to say about Meryl; she really is atalented actress and brought Julia to life. If this movie was just"Julia" without the "Julie" I probably would have liked it better,but...I HATED Julie. OMG, SHE WAS SOOOOO ANNOYING!! Amy Adams as Juliewas just an attention-starved, lazy cry-baby. "WAAAH! I NEVER FINISHANYTHING!!" That's just because you're a lazy a$$hole. Maybe if shewere cooking for a different reason, I'd like her better, but all shedoes is complain and whine. Also, I HAVE NO IDEA WHY HER HUSBAND LOVESHER. If I were her husband, I'd probably throw her out of theapartment. I don't know how he puts up with her.So yeah, I hate Julie but JuliA is good. Julie with all her whiningjust made me want to throw up my last meal.

Julie & Julia is a mixed blessing. You enjoy vicariously many dishes, sample the good life in France and get treated to another Streep marvel.

...an easy-going, pleasant film...

Christopher Orr 2012-05-09 23:51:14

[T]he whole enterprise has a whiff of marketing to it. Did the filmmakers worry that Child wouldn't be 'relatable' to contemporary women? Was there a fear that the 18-35 demographic would decline to show up if it didn't have an onscreen representative?

Absolutely delightful film, Meryl Streep&Amy Adams are wonderful.

Julie&Julia was a movie that didn't initially interest me mainly due tomy lack of knowledge of Julia Child, but being the big Meryl Streep fanI am, I decided to see what the hype was about. I'm certainly glad Idid because I loved the experience, and even looked up Julia Child'shistory. I loved how both stores were intertwined with each other, itwas cool how it flip-flopped from Julie's story, then Julia's. JuliaChild is a legend of the cooking industry. She inspired so many cooksand so many great things for cooking, really revolutionary to itactually, and to see Julie try to live up to her standards and makesomething of herself made for great times. Julie&Julia isn't a moviejust about cooking, it's a movie on how to make your life better, andrelationships in general. Julia's inheritable cheerfulness wasaddicting, she made people happier around her, made people want to be abetter person so to speak. Amy Adams is absolutely fantastic as Julie, but this is Meryl Streep's show.Performances. Meryl Streep I have never seen give a bad performance, and here she is Oscar worthy. She deserved her Oscar nomination, anddid an incredible impression of Julia Child, her voice was especiallyextraordinary. Amy Adams is one of the best up and coming actresses, and here she shows why. She is never fully alongside Meryl Streep, butto hold her own against such a legendary actress is quite a featitself. She is often the key to the movie. Stanley Tucci is aremarkably underrated performer. He plays Julia's husband terrifically, and I enjoyed every minute of his performance. Chris Messina is verygood as Julie's husband. He gives a restrained, yet endearingperformance and his chemistry with Amy Adams was just perfect.Bottom line. Julie&Julia is one of my favorite films of 2009. It'sengaging, heartwarming and even funny at times. Be prepared to behungry after watching this one, so Bon Appetit!9/10

Butter to my bread breath to my life……

Butter to my bread breath to my life……Love the movie. It is about hope , perseverance about how if onedecides no feat is impossible and how life always gives you a secondchance and how one can find joy in very simple things and get successas per standard of world in seemingly unworldly ways. Some scenes like child couple celebrating valentine day or Julia childthanking her husband at the end were very touching. I am a vegetarianbut the movie makes me think that non veg won't be that bad….Something on relationships…the way Julia feels when her sister ispregnant and she can't have child or how mother of Juli's supports herefinally. The scene where Julia cuts onions fervishly is hilarious tothe core and also the one of being hot as stiff cock.A good watch. Makes you feel hopeful gain in life. And Madame Bassartwas adorable"I love deadlines. I especially like the whooshing sound they make asthey go flying by – set the tone for me…

Two Stories... One Film

I wasn't quite sure I would like this film, for a start I have neverheard of Julia Child, but I guess few people outside the USA that arenot all that into food have. Don't get me wrong, I like to cook, it'sone of those survival skills you pick up. I guess what I'm trying tosay is I'm not what you might call a foodie. So I'll begin with a verybrief summary (summary haters please look away while I type the nextparagraph… you can rejoin the group after). Two stories are told in parallel. First the story of how famous foodwriter Julia Child got her love of cooking, and how she came to writethe well known book "Mastering the Art of French Cooking". Julia'shusband, Paul, is a diplomat who is stationed in Paris in the late 40'searly 50's, and this is where Julia, needing something to do, decidesto learn to cook. She meets two French ladies, Louisette Bertholle andMadame Brassart who are writing a French cook book for Americans. Aftertheir publishing deal falls through they ask Julia to help out, whichshe does and, after many years they finally get it published. Thesecond story is that of Julie Powell who needs a focus in her life. Atthe suggestion of her husband, Eric, she decides to cook every recipein Julia Child's book in one year. Not only that, but she will write ablog about her experiences. There are many highs and lows, but sheeventually achieves her aim, which brings other, greater rewards.I found this film a little hard to watch, the constant jumping from onestory to another got a little distracting at times. However, the sceneswhen Julia was in Paris really took me back. At one time I had a Frenchgirlfriend and we had some good times in Paris… but I digress (again).I hear that Meryl Streep's performance as Julia Child is spot on. I'llhave to take that on trust never having seen the original to compare. There were also good performances from; Amy Adams as Julie Powell,Stanley Tucci always good value as Paul Child and Chris Messina as EricPowell. At the end of the day, yes, I did enjoy this film. Despite the slightlydistracting jumping from story to story, I found it quite engaging.Although it's not the best film ever made, it is still prettyentertaining, and you can't ask for more than that. Over all a quiteendearing film with some good performances. I find films based on factare often quite interesting and this one is no exception… recommended. My score: 7.1/10

Casting Error

I have to say it is a well-made movie and Amy Adams is total eye-candythroughout. Meryl Streep's performance (as well as Stanley Tucci's) wassuperb. The only glaring flaw was casting Chris Messina as Eric (Julie'shusband). This is a 30-something guy who chews with his mouth open.Come on. Please. His performance wasn't bad, but some seriousediting/directing attention needed to be applied here.Overall, I enjoyed it quite a bit and I'm sure I'll enjoy seeing itagain sometime. I just hope next time that I don't notice "Eric" eatinglike a toddler.

"Julie & Julia" is delightful but the Julia Child story is more fun than Julie's

Close to perfection: Meryl Streep's Julia Child and Julia Child's Boeuf Bourguignon

Julie is cutesy; Julia is grand. That just about sums up Nora Ephron'smovie, Julie & Julia. Ephron has taken Julie Powell's tale of deciding to make every singleone of the recipes in Mastering the Art of French Cooking and doing itin one year and Julia Child's memoir of her life in France with herhusband, Paul, as she learned to cook, plus other elements of her life. The result is a movie, half of which is a memorable delight and half ofwhich is not bad, depending on your tolerance for New York's creativeyuppie set As Julie (Amy Adams), cute and smart and wanting to be writer, worksher way through the recipes, we get to meet her superficial and moresuccessful Manhattan friends, her loving husband who eventually getstired of the project and his wife's self obsession with it, and thegradual recognition of others, including some in the writing game, ofwhat she's doing. She keeps a blog and seems as devoted to it as she isto Julia Child. Back and forth we go in flashback as we also see JuliaChild (Meryl Streep) trying to find something to do in Paris where herhusband has been assigned after the war, deciding to master greatFrench cooking, and discovering that great cooking and eating wellprepared food is what she enjoys the best. To the surprise of some, butnot herself or her husband, she becomes a wonderful example of try, tryagain, hard work, indomitable perseverance and good humor...all voicedwith her inimitable fluting exuberance. Within minutes we've forgottenStreep and are completely enchanted by one of our favorite people. The drawback to the movie is that Julie Powell's quest seemsincreasingly self-centered and insignificant compared to Julia Child'squest. With Julie we get all the requisite clichés of New York'syounger set, including stylishly improvised dinner parties, a 900square foot apartment (above a pizza restaurant), romantic tussles onthe sofa, the anguish of misunderstandings and disappointments. Ah, but with Julia we are on a magnificent quest on a completelydifferent level...to conquer doubt; to do things right even if it meansdropping spoons on a floor; to make and keep friends; to take cookingseriously, but not oneself; and with Paul to have a happy, mutuallysupportive and very lusty partnership. It would take a shrewd andskilled actor to stand up to Streep's extraordinary ability to channelJulia Child's personality, manners and voice. Stanley Tucci, byunderplaying, makes Paul Child into what he was in life, the rock uponwhich Julia Child depended. Not much in the movie, to Nora Ephron's credit, is played for easylaughs. The movie may generate endless platefuls of warm smiles andnods, but that's because Ephron and Streep have managed the remarkablefeat of giving us the Julia Child we learned to love and learn fromthrough her television programs. Julia Child on the screen is the womanwe saw and remember with such affection. If only Ephron, with Streep'ssignature on the contract, had just dumped the Julie part and given usall Julia.

This middling melange of Child biopic and contempo dramedy feels overstuffed and predigested.

Stories of two women's reclamation

1949--Julia Child (Streep) moves with her husband Paul (Tucci) to France. She can't figure out what to do with herself. Paul encourages her to do the thing she loves--that's eat. Despite the fact that she cannot boil an egg, she goes to the Cordon Bleu and learns French cuisine. Almost ten years later, she's the author of the first French cookbook for American women. 2002--Julie's (Adams) dreams of becoming a writer are almost done. The editor of the Amherst literary rag and the girl most likely is now a mid-level bureaucrat in a job that doesn't fulfill her and 900 square foot apartment that is closing in more and more by the day. Eric (Messina), her husband, encourages her to find something she loves to do to complete her. She loves to cook, so she decides to go through Child's cookbook for a while year and blog the experience. The two women's stories are told in parallel, so you can see how much the pair do have in common. The performances by the quartet of leading actors is excellent. WARNING: This film may well be a diet buster. Everyone I have talked to says you're going to want to eat after you've seen it and they are right. You might as well have a dinner at a fine French restaurant planned for afterward--or at the least, make up a bowl of buttered popcorn. Rebecca Kyle, January 2010

Sleepless in the kitchen...

Gawd, who buys this junk? OK, Meryl does good schtick, SNL style, but while her Julia Child sounds pretty right, she acts wrong, it's a paper-thin impression, with Julia coming off as a fausse grande-dame from a PG Wodehouse story, too too stuffy & tweety. The Queens part of the story is deadeningly dull dull dull.

gruffbear 2012-04-24 04:36:45

The flavor was a little off...

As one who watched many episodes of Julia Child's show "The FrenchChef" on public television as a kid, I was hoping to see some of thefamous author's humanity in Meryl Streep's performance. It didn't comethrough though -- it looked like a very, very good parody.Amy Adams' performance was excellent, however. It was much better thanthe reviewers gave her credit for.It was also nice to see Chris Messina playing her usually supportivemensch husband, similar to his role as Claire Fischer's lawyerboyfriend in the last season of Six Feet Under. In all, a pretty good light entertainment, but not a great and movingfilm.
