Jerry Maguire used to be a typical sports agent willing to do just about anything The could to get the biggest possible contracts for his clients, plus a nice commission for himself. Then, one day, he suddenly has second thoughts about what hes really doing. When he voices these doubts, he ends up losing his job and all of his clients, save Rod Tidwell, an egomaniacal football player. Can Jerry resurrect his career while still staying true to himself?
I like Cameron Crowe's films like Singles and Almost Famous, this is just steaming pile of you know what. Stupid stereotyped characters, ANNOYING stupid little kid for comedic value, senseless and pointless sex scenes, and a cliche' ending. Remember how much everyone was jocking Cuba Gooding Jr. in this movie at the time? Remember his boisterous acceptance speech? What has he done since then....Sled Dogs? Proof that the Oscars are just a trendy clique in themselves.Oh yeah, I was really hoping Jerry would get his revenge and punch out Kelly Preston at the end of the movie.
"Jerry Maguire" did something very strange in 1996: it had both criticalandcommercial success. This was evident in the fact that the four other BestPicture nominees for the year were all independent productions. "JerryMaguire" shows the business world of America at its worst, in this case inthe sports industry. When Jerry Maguire, a sports agent, (played byOscar-nominated Tom Cruise) has a breakthrough one night he realizes thatquality is more important than quantity. Of course he is fired from hisjoband loses all of his clients except Rod Tidwell (played by Cuba Gooding,Jr.in his Oscar-winning performance). Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger) has leftthe business with Maguire, agreeing with his views. However, Maguirestruggles with his separation from the sports corporation (losing hisfianceand the first pick in the NFL Draft). However, he survives and learns thatliving well and loving well are the keys to happiness. All in all, "JerryMaguire" is classic Hollywood stuff made in the present-day. CameronCrowe's script and direction are subtle, but extremely effective. TomCruise delivered his best performance to date. Renee Zellweger proved tobethe find of the year and Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s quotes and scenes he stolewereenough to win him the Oscar in a very competitive year in the BestSupporting Actor category. "Jerry Maguire" is not a perfect film. In factit is flawed in many ways and is not very accurate in some areas. However, its ability to mix comedy, romance, and drama make it a very entertainingfilm. The performances are all excellent. 4.5 out of 5 stars.
The film is as crowded with emotions as Jerry Mcquire himself, it's many subplots and situations include morality, marriage, breakups, makeups, conviction, single motherhood, longevity of being a pro sportsperson, friendship, mentorship.. And then some. But both Zellweger and Cruise, and occasionally even Cuba G Jr. as a wide receiver on the verge of greatness, have enough commanding presence to carry the film. The goggled kid is cute too. There are plenty of cheesy lines, e.g., "You had me at Hello", but the movie redeems itself, like its protagonist, through sheer charm and bounty of the human spirit. Recommended rental.
When I first saw this movie I just said `it was a great movie, but tooÂpinkie'; then I saw it again, and I got out of the theatre thinking tomyself `I'm in love'; now, every time I see it, I just thank heaven for notbeing a girl, or I would throw myself to the floor the moment Jerry entersthe living room and would probably cry for at least 2 hours! ÂLOLFunny, touching, really human, through this film Crowe illuminates us withhis vision about the world and the human being and relationships, no matterhow hard life may look like. He could well be a good defendant of FrankLloyd Wright's motto:`Beauty is just the brilliance of Men's light'Jerry Maguire is, above all, a great Cameron Crowe film, filled withhappiness, energy, passion and talent, that touches all the romantic peoplein the world, as well as all others, I believe. When we see Tom Cruise looking at Zellwegger and saying: `That's more than adress. That's an Audrey Hepburn movie', we just gotta feel immensely inlove. Another really important aspect, that is starting to brand Cameron Crowe, islaunching great actresses; in `Almost Famous' we finally see Kate Hudson, who only had minor parts to date, suddenly going to the Oscars and almostwining one; and here, in `Jerry Maguire', Renée Zellwegger has a greatperformance and jumps for the stars! If this `Jerry Maguire' has something wrong, then it is definitely timing;if it had been done 20 years ago, in the 80's, or maybe even much earlier, about 40 years sooner, then today many would be calling it a classic. Ibelieve in 20 or 30 years many of us will be saying, rememberingit:-Oh, Jerry Maguire! a great film! Really a classic of love, hope and happyending. Gotta see that, grandson!;)RIC
After 1992's relatively disappointing Singles, Cameron Crowe comes back strong with Jerry Maguire. The film is a romantic comedy with the underpinning of how ethics and values are treated in today's society. Tom Cruise stars as the title character who is a highly successful sports agent. After a night of heavy drinking, he types up a mission statement that is a little too much for his firm. He becomes a pariah in the company and eventually his one time protegee (Jay Mohr) tells him he's been fired. Jerry loses all of his clients except one Arizona Cardinals wide receiver, Rod (Cuba Gooding, Jr.). Renee Zellewiger is a worker at Jerry's firm and she is the only one who takes up his offer to leave with him for the agency he's starting up. She is in love with Jerry and will do anything for him. Eventually they fall in love and Jerry makes a big score for Rod. Mr. Cruise gain exudes all the boyish charm that has made him a superstar. Ms. Zellewiger has wholesome, girl next door looks and is sweet in her role. Mr. Gooding is a whirling dervish in his role. He is a ball of energy and the scene where he gets Jerry to shout "show me the money" became a major catch-phrase and part of the lexicon. Mr. Gooding won a well deserved Best Supporting Actor Oscar and the film cemented Mr. Crowe as the best double threat (directing & writing) in movies this side of Woody Allen.
Bought this DVD cause we love the movie and thought the extras would be worth the extra dollars (over the standard DVD release). The main reason we bought it was for the audio commentary. Unlike other movies where this has provided great insight into the movie and the actors, this commentary is more like a reunion of actors that haven't been told they are being recorded. There are huge gaps of silence followed by comments such as "I love this bit" and "this bit was great" and fits of giggles. It is a huge waste! They obviously haven't watched other DVDs to understand the value-add they could have provided to the viewer. The other extras are OK (the Rod Tidwell ad is really cool and the deleted scenes are interesting) but even the commentary around some of these stinks.Don't get us wrong - we still love the movie in all ways but don't waste the extra dollars if a good commentary is what you are looking for.
Jerry Maguire is, ultimately, a failed idealism.
My friend suggested this movie to me 2 weeks ago.I got to see reallysurprised i like a tom cruise flick. This movie had everything from goodcomedy, good music and some great acting Cuba Gooding was stunning asTidwell and his chemistry with tom cruise was fantastic. The small kidRay was also heart warming and was perfect to his role This movie has alot of cheesy emotional and sentimental stuff. I usually hate thosekind of movies but this was an odd one out.The only negatives in the film could have been a little over emphasison comedy lines which took out the seriousness of some of the importantscenes I suggest this movie to all even if u know nothing aboutfootball.Go ahead and enjoy this flick Rating : 8/10
This is the ultimate Tom Cruise performance, Crowe delivers the perfect screenplay and I just know this had to be written with Cruise in mind. I love the scene where Cruise is at his lowest and he tells Gooding that he is cloked in failure, it is hilarious and nobody could have done it with such aplomb. This movie also made Zellweger a star, and she is wonderful in this film. Gooding won a deserved Oscar, but it is Cruise that gives the great performance, he makes you believe the conversion the character undergoes, when someday Cruise gets his lifetime achievement award, this will be pointed to as the quintesential Tom Cruise performance..the DVD has some nice extra's and the soundtrack, as is typical of Cameron Crowe, is great. This is a great movie, and it improves with each viewing...oh and the kid steals every scene he is in.
I recently saw this movie and I loved it. I was so good! I cried, Ilaughed. It has the perfect balance of sad and funny. This is the bestmovie ever. I didn't think this movie would be good, I thought it wouldjust be some kinky chick-flick. I was wrong. The actors are great. Idon't personally like Renee Zellweger, but I think she did a great job.As always Cuba Gooding Jr. was great. Tom Curise isn't a favorite ofmine either, but I think this is the best movie he has done yet, muchbetter than any Mission Impossible. This is the perfect movie to watchwhen you are depressed, or when you aren't. It is also a great movie towatch with a bunch of girl-friends, or even your boyfriend. What can I say? It completes me!
Jerry Maguire is a universal favorite, it has good dialouge, good comedy, and some good actors. But when you think about it and put it intoperspective there isn't anything thats just absolutely amazing, weird, ordifferent about this film. The acting was excellent from Tom, Renee, andCuba Gooding Jr. (and Aries Spears) The little kid and Kelly Preston wereextremely annoying. I really just had to roll my eyes at the part whereKelly beats up Tom Cruise, I mean - yeah right, like she could actually dothat.. That and other moments made this film very un-real andannoying.
I loved that movie. It touched me in a unique way that very few other filmshad and will. The romantic mood settled in the very begining of the movie isintensified beautifully as it concludes, and the amazing Renne Zellwegger issimply irreplaceable. The idealistic plotline makes each and every one of us look around atsociety as it is today with the scorn it often deserves. It is a powerful movie that I will always remember as one of the best I'veseen: perfect casting and superior storyline combined with the finestacting, make it peak above all others in recent memory.
this movie is about love. The hard thing in life is to simply love, not to mete out your love in a miserly fashion, but to love hard. To love with a visceral intensity that keeps getting stronger. "I refuse to not love" is the moral of this film.
This is an awkward attempt at linking a sports movie with a romancestory. It might have worked much better, except the focal point of bothstories is, regretfully, Tom Cruise.Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays an athlete who keeps Jerry McGuire (Cruise) ashis agent, after some kind of skulduggery by fellow agents costs Jerryall his other clients (not a well-developed sub-plot, by the way).Gooding's fast babbling and shouting sometimes became an earful, butoverall it an interesting and likable character. Gooding made "Show methe money!" a commonly-quoted sound-bite.This was the first time I saw Rene Zellweger, and her performance asDorothy was touching and sweet. You feel her growing sadness andfrustration at her situation. Like Gooding, she gave us a memorableline: "You had me at hello." Johnathon Lipnicki is great as her son,who bonds with Jerry instantly, but is confused by his behavior. Then there's Tom Cruise. As usual, he over-emotes, swings his arms allover the place when he's talking, looks bewildered at everything, andturns in yet another uninspired role. Like so many other movies, strongacting by his co-stars carries the load and Tom just poses for thecamera with the same old glazed expression. Unfortunately, he's playingthe title character, and as such, should do something beyond readingfrom cue cards.Without Cruise, the film might have warranted a 7. With him, itplummets to a 4.
I just recently saw this movie with some friends after Homecoming lastSeptember, and it was excellent. Some parts were a little boring orstressful, but the ending made up for everything. I admit I cried alittle. But it was so well-written!! Okay, that's it. Tom Cruise is so fine, hemakes any movie good. Well ... okay, yeah, even Mission: Impossible2.
I loved this movie. I still watch it every few months or so. I still cryand laugh at the same scenes over and over again. Cuba Gooding wasexcellent in his role and definitely deserved the Oscar for it. Thecharacters were very well defined. I'd love to see Cuba Gooding and TomCruise do another film together. This was a sweet, touching love story aswell.
Jerry Maguire is one of Tom Cruises best films to date. Tom Cruiseplays Jerry Maguire, a sports agent who writes a mission statement thatends up costing his job and then he starts his own company. Ithoughttheir was a little too much going on in this movie. Namely therelationship between Jerry and Dorothy Boyd. But I still enjoyed it.Tom Cruise was amazing as the lead character who starts out as aegotistical sports agent and then he becomes more compassionate as thefilm goes on. Cuba Gooding, Jr. was amazing as Rod Tidwell, a footballplayer and Jerry Maguires client. And finally to Renee Zellweger asDorothy Boyd, Jerry Maguires love interest. This is a very fun movie.
This is a very entertaining movie(since the most well-known actor of the1990's, Tom Cruise, is in it). Tom Cruise gave a good performance in thismovie, in a rare, comedy movie performance. I can see why Cuba Gooding Jr.won an award for this movie: He's funny as Hell in this movie(and he alsodid the very famous, the very well known "Show Me The Money" scene). ReneeZellweger, a big dramatic actress, didn't give much of a good performance.Bonnie Hunt was also funny as Hell in this movie. Then there are appearencesby Jerry O'Connell, Jay Mohr, and a young Jonathan Lipnicki, who was verycute in the movie. I think this movie is a classic. I also recommend thismovie to everyone.8/10
I'll admit it; I've never been a big fan of Tom Cruise - UNTIL THIS MOVIE! Cruise really sinks his teeth into the role of formerly jaded sports agent, Jerry Maguire, who finally has a brush of concious; thus realizing, it's "not just all about the money!" (Something else I never knew about Cruise before this movie, either, is that he can actually be quite funny)! No, you do NOT have to be into sports to enjoy this film. It's more of a dialogue, relationship type story, with a major romantic twist thrown in! The movie is not only FUN to watch, (very intelligently written, great depth of character, some extrememly amusing lines), it also has A LOT of heart and sole. The only thing that irritated me about it, was Renee Zwellinger's wispy, childlike voice. Other than that, though, this is one Tom Cruise movie that's DEFINITELY worth owning!
This is a great movie with great characters and an awesome storyline.Tom Cruise plays Jerry Maguire who is obsessed with making it as asports agent, spending most of his time working on his thesis.Jerry is indifferent toward Cuba's character, but thru the story, theyboth become very close, culminating in an awesome friendship in theend. This is just an awesome movie, that's funny, touching, anddownright beautiful. It's one of those movies you can't help but cryat. The acting is great, the movie is beautifully shot, and as I saidbefore, the story is just perfect. The music is well done also.Kudos to Cameron Crowe!
