High time there's been a truly funny and well-acted romance flick!

I just loved this movie. It had an interesting, rather novel storyline to back up the romance and, fortunately, very good actors that carry the story. Rent it, buy it, watch it! (I also fell in love with one of the groups that sings one of the songs in the movie -- check out "The 88".)

Enjoyable.

I saw this film at the LA film festival, and enjoyed it, even if itleft me pretty much right away. The plot is one we've seen before, almost a sitcom plot, outgoing girlmeets nebbishy guy. It's kind of a cross between an older Woody Allenfilm and Darhma and Greg, but what makes it enjoyable is the cast.The two leads are fine, but it's the supporting pros that steal thefilm with relish whenever they can. Robert Klein, Frances Conroy, FredWillard all seem to be having a very fun time, and that translatesright out into the audience.I think it was shot on digital instead of film, which makes it kind ofdifferent to look at, but not unpleasant at all.A fun date movie!

great movie!

I saw this film last month at the BJFF and it's terrific! It's like aJewish "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" but with a lot more intelligence andinsight. Jennifer Westfeldt wrote a great script and is so likable inthe film. Robert Cary did a great job directing. Chris Messina is anexciting new comedic actor, he plays a spot on New York Jewishneurotic. I loved him on "Six Feet Under" as Ted too. Judith Light andFred Williard also deliver great performances. There are great cameosfrom Jason Alexander and a bunch of the "SNL" guys. The audience lovedthe movie, it's got more laughs than any comedy i've seen in a longtime. I hope it's going to be out in theaters soon as I need to send myfriends, family and therapist to go see it.

A Future Neil or Woody, Maybe?

While looking for something with Jon Hamm in it, I stumbled upon hisgirlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt's movie, Ira and Abby, and was so glad Idid. While Mr. Hamm only has one line in it, the rest of the film keptme very interested in it.Ms Westfieldt has written a wonderful comedy reminiscent of those ofthe last decade going back to the 20's, but even more of the sitcomsand movies of the 60's-90's. Writers like Neil Simon and Woody Allenkept us laughing at their comedies with the same wit and fast, sharptongued dialog that Ms Westfieldt exhibits here in her film. Ever seeMad About You on TV? It's very similar in style to Ira and Abby, rightdown to it's Jewishness.Ira is the epitome of the neurotic Jewish young man who can't seem tofind happiness anywhere until he meets the quirky Abby and her happy,loving family who are old laid back hippies, much like the format ofthe TV show Darma and Greg. We just don't get great comedies like theseanymore, in movies or TV. His parents are wealthy neuroticpsychoanalysts in NYC, of course.The beginning was slow for me, probably because I didn't like ChrisMessina as Ira very much. Another actor would have been better in thatrole I believe, but no one springs to mind now and they cannot pay thebig salaries that Woody Allen productions can. I hung in there hopingto see Jon Hamm and ended up hooked on it (being the lover of great witthat I am) and relished every last word and witty scene.I loved the acting of the older, more experienced entourage with somegreats like Robert Klein and Fred Willard, and the wonderful FrancesConroy. Judith Light did a great job with her part, as well as all thesupporting cast of mostly seasoned veteran character actors. Jenniferreally shone as the quirky girl reminiscent of Diane Keaton and MiaFarrow from Woody's movies. Jill Clayburg is another who comes to mind.They all managed the fast pace of the dialog under the masterfuldirection of David Clary who kept things moving at a quick pace andpulled good performances from everyone, but mainly Jennifer who was oneof the least experienced actors in it.I will have to rent Jennifer's other movies to see if they are asenjoyable this one; I have only seen snippets of Kissing Jessica Stein,but based on those I think I will prefer this movie more.I think Jennifer has a great career in writing once she finds her ownstyle. She has done a great job here and I look forward to the films inher future. Woody won't be around forever and we will need areplacement. I recommend this film to anyone who loves Woody Allenmovies, especially the older ones.

Awesome movie!

Jennifer Westfeldt is just great in her role as Abby. But, her storyand screenplay really make this a great film. Chris Messina isabsolutely incredible in the lead role, which was certainly no piece ofcake for any actor. But he pulls it off like a hot knife throughbutter. The two of them in this awesome script make for a great film.The supporting cast ain't chopped liver either. Judith Light and RobertKlein were a wonderful delight. This film has it all in terms of ameaningful story about love and romance done with great comedy andcharm. It asks all the tough questions about marriage and answers themeloquently. The comedy is wonderfully done. Anyone who's ever had a relationship, or wanted one, or ever thoughtabout marriage or even divorce should see this film. The script movesalong at a fast clip with witty dialog at every turn, like I haven'tseen since His Girl Friday. The plot keeps twisting with surprises.Every other scene will have you laughing. This film takes a veryserious look at the matters of love, marriage, and divorce and examinesthem deeply, while keeping it all on the lighter side. This is good oldfashion romantic family comedy. They don't make them like this veryoften.

Ira and Abby

This review is from: Ira & Abby (DVD) My new favorite movie. I've always been a sucker for a decent romantic comedy (honestly what 20-something woman isnt?) but this one has definitely moved to the top of my list. Ira and Abby are both lovable characters and their relationship (even with its ups and downs) is the kind we all want to have. Highly recommended to people who like romantic comedies (Sleepless in Seattle, My Best Friend's Wedding, etc) and fans of realistic comedy like Woody Allen, Seinfeld, and so on.

The truth in love finally shows its face...well

It's the time of year that we get bombarded with jewelry ads all the way through February 14. This movie was a nice juxtaposition to those ads for me and brings things back to reality. No relationship is perfect and if you think it will be...you'll be sorely disappointed.Although the characters showed a great range of honest and believable emotions... they didn't communicate well between one another, thusly adding to their problems. They were talking to all the wrong people instead of addressing the person who caused the hurt. I think a lot of us can identify with that. The one thing the movie didn't do for me was to make me want to root for any of the characters. That I think was my biggest disappointment with it. But I liked seeing their stories develop and it really picked up momentum at the end. Thanks Stu Pollard for coming to Louisville and taking questions afterwards. Very enlightening.

Hated every second of it

It's the kind of movie I hate with every fiber of my being: overwrittenin a self-congratulatory way, talky with nobody saying anythinginteresting or substantial, whiny, preposterous in every detail -- nota single word or action bears any resemblance to anything that has everhappened on planet Earth -- profoundly unfunny, overstuffed withsketched-out characters but lacking a single one to care for, much lesslike or root for, replete with undertalented actors and a couple oftalented ones all mugging their way through (why bother being humanwhen the script is SO false?), predictable whenever it thinks it'staking a chance, trite when it thinks it's being original. It takesplace entirely in Movieland -- that it gets its Manhattan geography allwrong on Ira's opening-credits walk through the city was the first clue-- and succeeds almost uncannily at producing the opposite of thedesired reaction in every scene: when the filmmakers aimed forsweetness and romance, they instead delivered crassness and vulgarity;when they aimed for Woody Allen-style neuroticism, they found onlysnarkiness and endless therapist clichés; when they aimed for laughs,they got only stone faces from my audience. It's this year's equivalentof 2001's "All Over the Guy," with Judith Light in the Andrea Martinrole. Avoid it like the plague.

Quirky, different kind of love story set in New York.

Watched in via streaming Netflix.Chris Messina is Ira Black, son of two therapists, excuse me,'analysts', and has a personal history of problems making decisions. Asan example when he goes to he street café he orders one thing, then asthe waiter starts to go away, changes his order, and does that a coupleof more times. On a more serious issue, he has a girlfriend for 12years but has not yet been able to decide to get married. Jennifer Westfeldt is perky Abby Willoughby, who works in sales at adowntown gym. She has a knack for making friends with almost anyone. Infact, when on the subway and a guy brandishes a gun and asks for money,she goes up to him, asks him how much he needs, then proceeds to calmlycollect from the other riders. The love story starts when Ira, on a whim after seeing a poster, goesinto the gym and is given a tour by Abby. Somehow she falls for himright away. She likes his face. She hugs his bare tummy after theycompare 'bulges' in the mirror. He is taken aback by her interest, andhe seems to like her too. But is shocked when she asks him, right away,to marry her.So the unusual story takes many twists and turns on its way to itseventual conclusion. While it in no way helps anyone figure out wherethey might want to go with their lives, it is a fun and entertainingmovie.MAJOR SPOILERS: Ira and Abby go ahead and get married quickly, eventhough they don't know much about each other. Then certain revelationsleak out, like the two other husbands Abby had had and then divorced.And Ira begins to feel uncomfortable that Abby doesn't seem to have anyambition, being satisfied with a small job that allows her to survive.They actually get the marriage annulled, then they re-marry. Meanwhileher dad begins an affair with his mother, which causes further familystress. In the end Ira and Abby are in bed, discussing their plans,including "I will never again ask you to get married" and they bothsign the new divorce degree, happy to be in love.

Oddball Comic Romp

"Ira & Abby" pairs Chris Messina from "Humboldt County" with Jennifer Westfeldt from "Kissing Jessica Stein." Westfeldt wrote the screenplay and delivers a quirky offbeat performance as Abby, a woman who sees the world differently. Messina's Ira is a guy who has a lot of ability, but can't quite put the pieces together. Both sets of parents also play prominently. Ira's mother Arlene is played by TV's "Who's the Boss" star Judith Light. Arlene's classy elegance and ice queen exterior is given depth and shading by Light's performance, with the scene in the recording studio being her best moment. Robert Klein plays Ira's dad Seymore, a bit of a putts for a professional guy. The film's relationships kind of mirror TV's "Dharma & Greg" with Ira's parents being uptown, wealthy and professional and Abby's parents being more the free spirit/hippy types. Fred Willard plays Abby's dad Michael who does voice-overs for a living. Frances Conroy who worked with Chris Messina on the last year of TV's "Six Feet Under" plays the hippy mother Lynne. This oddball comic romp seems to crash to the conclusion that marriage cannot sustain true love but rather smothers it. While I'm not personally sure that I agree with this, I did enjoy the film, the characters and their romance. Enjoy!

great comedy, romance and relationship film

This was one of the most entertaining films I have seen in a long time.I was looking forward to seeing this film by Jennifer Westfeldt sinceher "Kissing Jessica Stein" was such a delight. Everyone I know hassaid that was one of their favorite films."Ira and Abby" definitely doesn't disappoint. The casting is amazingwith many top stars. Sometimes it appears that directors choose famousactors only for their celebrity. Not so in "Ira and Abby" since all ofthe actors give great performances and are not just caricatures. JasonAlexander, as one of the several psychiatrists in the movie, sheds hisSeinfeld persona and truly gets into his character. Same with RobertKlein, who gives one of his best performances. Jennifer Westfeldt, asAbby, is refreshing and natural and is a joy to watch as she goesthrough myriad of emotions and transformations in the film. Kudos tothe casting director for all of the excellent choices.The writer and director have intelligently avoided showing us a serioussubject as simply funny and without pain. There is a lot of humor butalso a serious side with a twist ending that makes this film a must seefor all ages. It is an original and refreshing take on modern romance.

Abysmal

This film is about as contrived and pretentious as a movie can get. Ifyou picked random lines out of a hat and handed them to the actors youwould have a better script. Not even a decent cast can help thisatrocity. The only good thing I can say is that it is a cure forinsomnia. Very few details about this film are authentic. For example,Abby (Westfeldt, who is also the writer and producer, which should giveyou an idea of how self-indulgent this film is), who is supposed to bea gym instructor, is seen munching on McDonald's french fries, andnever even pretends to actually work. Ira, an annoyingly self-pityingspecimen (why do so many recent films set in Manhattan include suchnonentities?), suddenly says he feels fat and goes to her gym,whereupon Abby instantly asks him to marry him and have sex. If youthink this is plausible, then you will probably like this film, and youalso believe that George Bush will find weapons of mass destruction inIraq. This is another of those "independent" films where absolutelynone of the characters bears any resemblance to a human being, andwhere you feel you have wasted 90 minutes of your life. Beware ofmovies where the writers, actors, and the producers are the samepeople.
