In Nazi occupied France, young Jewish refugee Shosanna Dreyfus witnesses the slaughter of her family by Colonel Hans Landa. Narrowly escaping with her life, she plots her revenge several years later when German war hero Fredrick Zoller takes a rapid interest in her and arranges an illustrious movie premiere at the theater she now runs. With the promise of every major Nazi officer in attendance, the event catches the attention of the Basterds, a group of Jewish-American guerilla soldiers led by the ruthless Lt. Aldo Raine. As the relentless executioners advance and the conspiring young girls plans are set in motion, their paths will cross for a fateful evening that will shake the very annals of history.

This review is from: Inglourious Basterds [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) I don't usually review movies but this movie starts out well but then Brad Pitt gets involved. I like Brad Pitt where did he find that southern accent at the dollar store. Did they just give up on making it worth while. I hope they didn't spend much on this because this movie is middle of the road B movie. The bar room scene/chapter was longer then it should have been. Only two chapters are worth watching with the bar room being longer then needed. The chapter at the show had the complete upper elite echelon of the Reich attending a preimer showing of a hero of the Reich's deeds. It had two soldiers guarding Hitler and maybe ten others guarding elsewhere. The whole chapter was a joke. It seems more like the scene was from national lampoon vs this movie. The scenes happen because the writter said it happened. This movie will be $7.99 by year end. What a complete waste of two and 1/2 hours. I would like to carve into Brad Pitt's head that he "sucks" its that bad.
Good Fantasy Movie"We know the story, a WWII tale told only as Tarantino can. (Fictionalof course) A war film hasn't been done like this before. Brad Pitt asLt. Aldo Raine leads the Basterds in Nazi occupied France. Their goal -killin' Nazi's. Christoph Waltz as Colonel Hans Landa plays a similarrole on the other side. He's know as the "Jew Hunter" and goes abouthis business as ruthless as no other. The third sub story consists of ayoung Jewish refugee, Shosanna Dreyfus, who witnesses the slaughter ofher family. And she, of course, wishes to plot revenge on the Germansfor her devastating lose. There actually is three stories hereintertwining and connecting with each other. If you know anything aboutTarantino or his films, this is nothing new for him.War has never been been so fun. The Basterds, are haunting, but at thesame time, very funny, at times even hilarious. The dark comedy aspectplay a big aspect in this as in many other Tarantino films. Theentertainment and hilarity is led by Brad Pitt. I found him extremelyfunny and entertaining. I couldn't wait to see him on screen again.Even with his crazy accent, he works in this type of film. Also makinggreat impressions were Mélanie Laurent and Christoph Waltz, who weretremendous. The film was filled with noteworthy performances. The story itself, has so many historical inaccuracies to even count, but so what? It isn't meant to be a documentary. Tarantino wanted tohave fun with, as should we. The cinematography department deserves bigprops with beautiful vibrant colors highlighting the film. You'vereally got to love the last line in the film... but Pulp Fictionremains his masterpiece.Quentin Tarantino among all other things, is an entertainer. WWII, isone of the most tragic events in history, but Tarantino some howmanages to make it fun. Inglourious Basterds is a fun film, it'stremendously entertaining, shocking, dramatic, suspenseful, and funnyat the same time. Jam packed with everything you look for in a movie, done with that certain Tarantino style, it's worth being checked out. It's time to experience for yourself what war is like through the eyesof Quentin Tarantino."I don't understand all this.
If you like Quentin Tarantino films, you'll love "InglouriousBasterds"! What makes this movie great is that I had no idea what wasgoing to happen next! There were many scenes that were suspenseful, unpredictable & caught me completely by surprise. The villain Col. HansLanda (played by Christoph Waltz) is one of the best on-screen villainsthat I've seen in a long time. He's evil, memorable & intelligent. Asfor Brad Pitt, even though his name is credited first, he has a verysmall supporting role in this film.Like most Quentin Taratino films, there are a bunch of characters withchatty dialogs, but what make this movie unique & ingenious is that thecharacters are speaking in their native languages. There are moreGerman & French in this movie than English, so expect to read a lot ofsubtitles. The movie is directed very much like the "Kill Bill" series, but with ahistorical presentation to the film. It doesn't even pretend to behistorically accurate, so that you can just enjoy the movie for what itis; which is another action-packed, highly violent, bloody, comical, &unpredictable film. It's a roller coaster type film, so enjoy the ride!
This was a total disappointment. In most countries Tarantino would not be allowed to make films. The "critics" gave this an A- ? What a joke!!! They are all shills and liars. And how can this movie get a user rating of B+? There are so many F grades that even with all the studio employees giving A+, the average grade no way is a B+, More like a D+.
FIRST: i read some opinions on IMDb about "inglourious basterds". there arepeople that took this movie seriously. i read things like "QT ispolitically incorrect", "QT doesn't respect history", "QT is selfindulgent", "QT is the king of violence" or "QT makes a mockery of WWIIand all the veterans that fought there". wtf? wtf? wtf? we are losing our sense of logic here. movies are entertainment. moviesare meant to be fun. a movie is the vision of the writer and director.a movie is very subjective. a movie does not portray reality. evendocumentaries are subjective views on a topic. please just enjoy this movie and cut the bs. i pity people that takeQT's movies seriously and are feeling offended by the language or bythe violence. "saving private ryan" for example is a slasher movie andit didn't cause so much controversy. No movie should be taken seriously, just enjoyed. QT is the ultimate entertainer. period. just enjoy his movies. SECOND: since when IMDb is "a useful barometer of film excellence"? am imissing something? this is just a site where people express theiropinions about movies. the majority of us don't have the movie cultureto say much about films and we are not doing it for money. by the way, this is an excellent movie. it makes me laugh when peoplesay "oh it was so violent". wtf? that is fake blood, those are dummies, the film is for adults. ... that is bingo!
What a crafty sidebar to mix historical fact with ideological fiction.Who hasn't daydreamed about a world where Hitler was caught andbrutally killed? As opposed of course to the limp dick fashion in whichhe actually checked out. What a beautiful fantasy to imagine all of thethird Reich's principals bar-b-que'd in unison instead of slipping offto Argentina and anonymity.Brilliant, that's the adjective best describing Tarantino's use ofhistoric escapism embedded in this beautiful piece of cinema. The acting is incredible, the sense of closure in the form ofslaughtering one of the most heinous villains of history is brilliant, brilliant!
This review is from: Inglourious Basterds (2-Disc Special Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Great dialogue, not much action and not as violent as people said it was. What you are getting here is a really good story.
Inglorious Basterds might be Quentin Tarantino's most complicated storyline yet. World War II is the setting and it opens at at a Frenchfarmhouse where the owner is suspected of hiding Jews. He isinterrogated by a Nazi Colonel Hans Landa; played by Christoph Waltz inan Oscar winning performance both chilling and hilarious at the sametime. After denials, a hidden family is given up and one, Shosanna, escapes. Brad Pitt is Lieutenant Aldo Raine, and his mission is to recruit eightJewish-American soldiers to sneak behind enemy lines and kill as manyGermans as possible. He requests 100 scalps as trophies from each man.Pitt is over the top in an almost comic book fashion, but this isTarantino's baby. In the meantime, Shosanna has become a French woman named Emmanuellewho owns a movie theater in Paris. She meets Zoller, a German hero whois the subject of a Lenin Riefenstal type of propaganda film and heintroduces her to Joseph Goebbels and she offers her theater for thepremiere of the movie, with the plan to assemble as many higher ups aspossible in order to kill them in retaliation for the massacre of herfamily. The last chapter is classic Tarantino, a complete fantasy with theNazi's looking like Hogan's Heroes. Revenge is sweet and so isInglorious Basterds.
Here's my two pence worth. In my opinion Inglorious is worth a 5/10 and is really lucky to getthat. It's unlucky that its director is so weak and jaded to the extentthat he will let the studio etc put its sticky fingers all over hisfilm, one that essentially has the hallmark of genius stamped into itssilver bottom. My point stems from the notion that the film is dividedinto two not 8 chapters (maybe 7). The good chapter and the rubbishchapter. The good bit was the initial scene in the French farmhouse andthe next scene was the preliminary to the gun fight in the Frenchbasement tavern. The bad part is the vomit spewing forth from thegaping wound that is Brad Pitt's character and everything, I meaneverything, that the Pitt features in (I still rate him highly as anactor though due to his previous work).Tarantino was onto something with his art house style dialogue drivenscenes which I thought were taken straight out of an intelligent play.He dazzled me with a sharp witty script that simply, irresistibly, drewme into the 1940's and his revisionist plot. Then the guns came and heblew it all away. Not with the panache that we have seen in the complexJackie Brown's or Pulp Fiction's of this world but with the blunt axeof something crap like Righteous Kill. I am thoroughly amazed that helet himself get carried away by the silly plot and the unnecessarilygory scenes (I like blood and guts but in its right place - StarshipTroopers etc). The revisionist plot of Hitler's death was fun in the same way asBerlusconi getting a sharp miniature in his face is acceptable. He kindof deserves what he gets by why oh why do it in such a dull and horridfashion. The rest of the film is similar, unnecessary scenes taggedonto an unnecessary plot. The gross mistake was to let Brad Pitt'scharacter survive, no doubt his star power kept him alive but I foundthis the greatest travesty. I kept waiting for some clever death butthis was ignored in favour of a diabolical ending in which the sneakyNazi (Who Shines throughout this film) is outplayed like a small childby Pitt whose character was the Moron in Chief - Europe. He makesGeneral Melchett from Blackadder look positively enlightened. Anyway, the point of this diatribe is that this is a bad film whentaken over three hours or so. Cut out the rubbish and you are left witha polished diamond with scenes so immersive they have to be seen to bebelieved.
Wow! I do believe that heroes are as big as their enemies can be and inthis film I found out one of the best "Bad guys" of Hollywood:Christoph Waltz was astonishing from the beginning!! showing this lackof humanity or compassion. I found him remarkable even when his roledemanded to become a complete idiot the last minutes of the film.Brad Pitt? very good in this one, he gave some funny moments to themovie, but as I said, Waltz beats him every minute. I liked most theperformance of Mélanie Laurent as the good girl searching for revenge,it was credible and gave meaning to the film. These were - in my opinion- the highlights on this movie. excellentproduction and costumes; weird story, but a very good direction thathonors Tarantino's works.Definitely a must see.
I rented this movie and I was so excited to watch it and i had afeeling it was going to be very good movie because it is in the top 250list. I watched it and i was right. I seen pulp fiction and RoseveirDogs and this is the best! This movie delivers laughter and it keepsyou on the edge of your seat. But this movie is pretty violent eventhough i'm 18 i got disturbed. A very good film about Hitler and worldwar 2. Hitler looks so funny! Christopher Waltz did a good job in thismovie. At first i didn't who the heck Christohper Waltz was. Brad Pittis very funny in this movie and i love his accent! The story is welldone! A bloody masterpiece 9/10
Nobody can ever say that Tarantino's scripts aren't brilliant. As faras dialogue goes, Basterds is right up there with Pulp Fiction and theKill Bill Volumes. The only reason it isn't quite as good as the othersis the lack of great characters. Don't get me wrong the Jew Hunter,Aldo Raine, and the Bear Jew are all great characters but in previousTarantino films you could use all ten fingers to list characters forthe ages. First, the Jew Hunter was played brilliantly by ChristophWaltz and he deservedly won the Oscar for that performance. Every suaveword spoken by him could completely engage you in the dialogue and sendthe creeps down your spine. His range of emotion and touch of insanitymade him extremely fun to watch. Brad Pitt's character Aldo Raine wasalso a joy to watch because of the humor that radiated from hischaracters lines and expressions. I still laugh when I think of himtrying to portray an Italian when he meets the Jew Hunter.Surprisingly, Eli Roth was a strong point of this movie as well playingthe Bear Jew. These characters were great but it was the lines writtenfor them that made the movie itself an extremely good one. It did get alittle slow and borderline boring in the middle of the film with thestoryline covering the arrangements of the movie theater but the endingmade up for it and more with a fiery cout de gras on the Nazi's parade. It takes guts to challenge history with an alternate storyline but itis Tarantino we're talking about here. Who else would have visuals suchas Nazis getting svasticas carved into their foreheads in a WWII flick?A little patience may be required for this one but is it worth it inthe end? Hell yeah it is.
.......but in the end I was very impressed with the movie. It was a lot funnier then expected, and the acting was great. Brad Pitt did excellent but the movie def goes to Christoph Waltz (playing Hans Landa). He did a tremendous job of acting calm and charming yet making you wonder what his next step was. You never knew his plan of attack which kept you at the edge of your seat. Though the movie was long, I never looked at my watch or wondered if it was over yet. If your trying to catch a bloody action packed mess of a movie, this isnt for you. If your looking for a funny and suspenseful movie filled with great acting and a fun ending, go watch it now.
This review is from: Inglourious Basterds (Single-Disc Edition) (DVD) Good movie, I liked it. It was a little strange, but who am I to judge, I'm not god. Am I?
There is something about the build up to the release of a Taritino filmwhich is unlike any other and as usual I was really looking forward toseeing Tarintinos new one at he kino. You never know quite what to expect from a QT film, apart of coursefrom the standard great story and great acting. He has always joyfullysurprised me with each of his outings and once again he does notdisappoint. To be frank in the kings...Inglorious Basterds was another rip roaringeffort by our chap QT. Great fun with superb performances by every oneinvolved. I admit I found some scenes shocked me, even for a QT filmthese were cold man! Go see it.
It's a Tarantino movie, it's revisionist history....get over it. It has some of the best acting performances of the year (Christoph Waltz). If you're one of those people that doesn't like reading sub-titles and can only tolerate English go watch Delta Farce or something.
This movie is again well done by mr. Tarantino. The casting isbrilliant, which, in my opinion can make or break a movie. Allcharacters are very well chosen and fit their roles perfectly. A goodportion of dark humor and very hard scenes make this movie well worth awatch! The only disappointment for me, was the fact that it containssome of the "old" tricks of mr. Tarantino. But then again, that is justhis style and it is very recognizable as a Tarantino movie. All scenes are done very well, and using no English for most of thescenes makes it so much better! All and all: well done movie which willnot disappoint you if you are into Tarantino style.
I will always be one of the first to admit that Quentin Tarantino is aone of a kind, the king of using every day, boring conversation tocreate gripping and comical situations. However, yet again i come awayfrom watching his latest movie with a sense of wanting.Reservoir Dogs was his first film i watched, shortly followed by PulpFiction and Jackie Brown. These remain to be my favourite Tarantinomovies. Since then i feel as though he has been lacking that specialformula to create yet another masterpiece.Firstly, the most obvious change from, in my opinion, his best films isthe violence. Tarantino still remains to be the only director to make atorture scene with the removal of one's ear, or the blowing off of aman's head in a car funny. Yet in his latest movie, i found myselfcringing at the all-intensive violence (an example being a Nazi havinghis head beaten and cracked open like a watermelon with a baseballbat.) Too many times did i lose myself in the violence that imomentarily forgot that i was watching a film. I didn't pay to watchSaw IV after-all.Another downfall of his latest 'epic' are the acting performances.Brilliant casting was what created strikingly good scene afterstrikingly good scene. Whoever knew John Travolta could pull off such acareer defining performance? Or Michael Madsen with his sickening yetbrilliant roll as Mr.Blonde? Who on earth will ever say 'waht' toSamuel L.Jackson? Yet in this movie, Brad Pitt is, to be frank, dreadful. I am genuinely a Brad Pitt fan, 'Fight Club' being one of myfavourites, and i also believe he deserved an Oscar for playing an'ageing man'. Yet not once did i see his jaw move from what must havebeen an uncomfortable position. A bad decision. On the other hand,Christoph Waltz was a great bid for the director, pulling off astunning performance. If only more than one of about 15 actors could dothe same.My final point is about Tarantino himself. With his first 3 films heseemed so pure, so brilliant, so relaxed yet scientific about his work.Since then he seems to have been lost in Hollywood. In the ReservoirDogs commentary, Tim Roth makes an interesting point. He stated thatfilm writers make mistakes because they write for Hollywood, for theOscars. He makes sure we know that with his first film he wrote it tomake a genuinely good film. Now i seem to feel as though he is writingfor Hollywood. He is writing for the Oscars. If there's one piece ofadvice i'd give to him, it would be to bring the old Quentin back.
Inglorious Basterds is boring, nonsensical, stupid, and overlong. Ican't get my head around on why this is on IMDb's Top 250. Personally,I don't think it deserves this amount of praise. Heres why.The main problem with Inglorious Basterds is that it can't decidewhether to be an gritty war film or a table conversation caught ontape. For 70% of the film, all we are given is boring and overlongforeign language that do nothing more than act as stretching filler forthe 153 minute run time. Worse, it does almost nothing to develop thenonexistent plot line and the uninteresting and emotionless characters(apart from Colonel Hans Landa played by the great Christoph Waltz).Boring! It is a strange fact that the title characters (the Basterds) get suchlittle screen time. But even if they had more time, you still wouldn'tcare about them the slightest. For matters, they aren't veryinteresting characters. Who are they? Where did they originate? Whywere they selected to assonant Nazi's in the first place? None of thisis explained. And as hard as Brad Pitt and the others try, their talentis wasted on their roles being overshadowed by the unnecessaryconversation scenes plaguing this film.Near the end of this bore, we get to the action scene (finally!), butits just played out ridiculously. Spoilers: Hitler and his Naziofficers get locked inside a burning theater during a screening.Shouldn't there be guards available to stop the intruder from doingthis? I only spotted a few on duty who didn't do anything. During theexplosions, two of the Basterds sacrifice their lives to well continue shooting Hitler's corpse I guess? Not sure why. Then we cut toa conclusion that doesn't resolve anything. So whats so good about this film? From my point of view, nothing apartfrom Waltz. There's no plot or character development, the story ispoorly told and the pacing is slow and boring. We all know QuentinTarantino as a respected film director, but this mess he made doesn'tcome close to the charm of other WWII films like The Dirty Dozen,Saving Private Ryan, Defiance or Valiant. This basterd of a film is just plain bad. But seriously. A movie thispoor in the Top 250? Thats completely beyond me. "D"
I saw Inglourious Basterds on Sunday, and after seeing several negativereviews I wasn't really sure what to expect.Quite simply put, this film is incredible. The casting is fantastic, the dialogue is as sharp as you would expectfrom Tarantino and the plot is superb. There is the usual mix of suspense and humour, with a liberal servingof violence as well.I have seen some complaints about there being too much dialogue, but Ifelt that Tarantino was actually a bit more reserved than usual, andseems to have resisted filling scenes with 'pointless' dialogue. Forexample, I fast-forwarded through several 'talking' scenes of DeathProof without losing any of the plot, but I wouldn't dream of skippingany scenes of Basterds when it comes out on DVD.My only complaint would be the casting of Mike Myers. Simply becausehis British accent reminded me too much of Austin Powers, and he seemedto be concentrating so hard on his accent that the delivery of hislines was poor. I think he was an unnecessary addition to the cast, andany number of British actors could have played the part better.I think the top performance has to go to Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa, with Melanie Laurent coming a close second as Shosanna.Brad Pitt as Aldo Raine is comically brilliant and, personally, I wouldhave liked to see more of him. Also, his Italian accent is pure genius!Basically, I can't recommend this film highly enough. No, it's notremotely historically accurate, but it doesn't need to be. And yes, potentially the title Inglourious Basterds is misleading since the plotdoesn't really centre around the Basterds at all (perhaps justTarantino's desire for a controversial title). However, it isbrilliantly written, brilliantly acted (Mike Myers aside) andbrilliantly enjoyable.Go and see it and make up your own mind, you won't regret it.
