An IMAX camera chronicles the effort of 7 astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis to repair the Hubble Space Telescope.
The movie was pretty amazing: worth seeing. They took an IMAX camera up onto the space shuttle for the final Hubble repair mission. Some of the images are pretty fantastic in 3D, including the shuttle launch and space "fly through"s. The latter are based on real images from Hubble, but seem at least in part computer generated. Is that "cheating"? Leonardo Dicaprio did fine with the narration but his script was a little cliched. I wish it where a little longer and went beyond superficial description of the mission and space discoveries.
I really enjoyed this. It's an amazing look at our technology and made me wish I could be an astronaut. FYI, don't comment on the film if you haven't seen it!!! This movie is A+
Most of the 3D movies coming out these days are simply exploits by thefilm companies to cash in on the present 3D craze. This is NOT one ofthose films. 3D is everything in this presentation. If you are not ableto see it in IMAX 3D I wouldn't bother. The movie is fascinating whenit comes to explaining the difficulties in having to repair and upgradea technological marvel. But,in 3D you are put seemingly inches awayfrom an astronaut who is prepped for the coming mission, and rightthere as astronauts try to install new equipment into tight-fittingspots on the telescope. But, to me, the real worth of this film isseeing the expanse of the universe in 3D and seeing the incrediblebeauty of what is out there. You cannot possibly experience thiswithout the 3D. As the telescope zooms through galaxies we see starsfly into the audience and past us as we reach deeper into space. Iguarantee that most, after having seen this wonderful film in 3D willadmit that they previously had no real concept of the vastness ofspace, and the endless billions of galactic bodies. Only the 3Dexperience makes it possible to wrap our brains around at least a smalldegree of understanding of how big our universe is, and the infinitegalaxies which seem exist, let alone the billions and billions ofstars(to quote the late Carl Sagen). I rate this 8 out of 10,subtracting 2 stars (no pun intended) because the film left me cravingfor more scientific explanation about the amazing details of thespacial orbs and expanses we see visually.
Yes I said it. This film will inevitably become a masterpiece of film history because it effects the very being of humanity at all levels. For those who don't understand the impact that the Hubble telescope will have on the history of humanity, this film will leave them blown away. The only thing I would suggest, is if you are not viewing this for the first time in an IMAX theater, you must watch it on a huge tv with surround sound. The shuttle launch alone, with the surround sound shaking the walls, will leave you completely speechless.
