I stumbled on to this on my Netflix "instant play" feature as something to watch. The Netflix rating system told me I'd like it, and they were right! So much so that I'll probably buy it soon. The coming of age love story watches the goings-on of Reed Fish, a "literal" big fish in a small town who has a daily radio show he inherited from his dad. The slam dunk in this movie is Schuyler Fisk's performance and music. She's incredibly engaging. Her music is wonderful. Jay Baruchel, as the title character Reed, and Alexis Bledel, as his fiancée, do an excellent job. Some reviewers trash this film for various perceived ills, but they are completely missing the humour and the point. Reed Fish is a big fish, pun intended, in this little town, and spends his days solving problems for his listeners and otherwise operating as a pillar of his community despite his youth - it's meant to be a little weird, I think. There are many moments where the movie laughs at itself for all these "flaws", which I'm sure were engineered in in part to mimic reality. Do yourself a favor - suspend your reality for a moment and enjoy it for what it is - a delightfully engaging, charming romantic comedy.
I watched I'm Reed Fish on Netflix a few days ago and loved it. The characters are very easy to relate to. This movie is for anyone who is unsure about which direction they're headed. Schuyler Fisk sings beautifully at the bar and Reed is just so lovable. Some of the scenes are not laugh out loud funny but will induce a chuckle every now and then. Although, the twist ending is not exactly appealing, I still loved the movie.

This review is from: I'm Reed Fish (DVD) Nothing interesting about this movie but nothing bad about it either. I bought it because I like watching anything that includes Alexis Bledel. I enjoyed it but it is not for everyone.
Movie: I'm Reed Fish. Most Appalling Fact: Based off of a true story.Pretty darn close to a true story, actually.Honestly, this is the one person that I wish I have never met. Thismovie is a so-called "Romantic Comedy," which appears to be the exactopposite. It is of deceit and betrayal, and it may have been the driestmovie ever created if it wasn't for some unexpected humor from theanomalous charactersÂFrank Cortez and Andrew. I couldn't help myuncontrollable anger for this movie that I had to come home to get onthe internet to let out a rant. At the beginning, it's quirky, maybe afew "wow,-this-is-stupid,-why-are-we watching-this" type of thing. Andthen, Reed's "high school crush returns to Mud Meadows on the eve ofhis marriage to the small town's sweetheart," (plot outline) and it allgoes down hill from there. You hate everybody by the end of the moviefor their stupidity and devious actions. You will feel nauseous thatone person could stoop that low and then never learn from his mistakes, and not even at the end. I mean a Romantic movie? Are you kidding me?There are extremely idiotic reviews which I keep stumbling upon, ravingits excellence. I am extremely confused and disgusted. The movie wantsyou to trust no boy to be faithful in marriage, and not to trust evenyour best high school friends. While I am at it, the "high school crush" is basically throwing herselfat him, and then he is like trying to accept it and she is likeappalled by it. Then, she wants him. Then she is like "No, let's notsee each other." Then he goes back to the first girl and is cryingbecause he is so upset. He leaves her asparagus on her doorstep as aninside joke typed, "i-love-you-please-forgive-me" action. Then, hedoesn't want to be with the girl that he is marrying. NAUSEOUS? If not, waste your money supporting an extremely irritating, annoying, disgusting, aggravating, sickening, stomach-turning, infuriating, frustrating, appalling, nauseating film of "romance and comedy."I actually wish I can give it a 0 out of 10 for this one, that's howhorrible it was. I was really upset that an actress as good as AlexisBledel, would be absolutely wasted to this low of an extent...
the only reason i watched this movie was because alexis bledel was in it. and that is the only reason i would ever watch this movie again.the whole plot that he made a movie about his life is just weird. he in a way embaerassed his ex-fiance by showing he didn't choose her. i personally liked katie (bledel) better than jill in the first place.and to top it all off the main character (reed fish) was just plain unlikeable. though alexis did a great job playing the town sweetheart getting dumped... i would next time just skip this movie and watch her in something better. don't waste your time on it.
I would honestly rather shave my ballbag with a rusty razorblade in the dark and bathe in vinegar than ever have to sit through this monotonous, empty, useless excuse for a film again. How anyone could appreciate this rubbish is beyond me. The only thing good abouy any romantic comedy is the comedy half. This one doesn't even seem to attempt to make its audience laugh, so all you are left with is the mushy romantic drivel. Unless you are a hypersensitive nanner, I don't think you will enjoy this film. If you are a straight male, it might make you want to vomit.
A cute, small, character driven movie about a guy who looks 15 but isapparently in his mid 20's. On the eve of his wedding, his high schoolcrush comes back to the small town where they grew up. Predictableangst ensues. The soundtrack is good if you like emo country soft rock. The performances are fine, too. Alexis Bledel is very lucky to get somuch work considering she only has the one persona. Jay Baruchelchannels Zach Braff, which brings me to the main problem with themovie. Unfortunately, it is hard to accept the reality of a town ofgorgeous women who inexplicably love scrawny unattractive boys. Worthseeing if you can get it for free, otherwise wait for it to be onLifetime or MTV.
I thought this was a fun little film. It was unassuming, clever, and well done. I enjoyed the plot twist and the way it made me think. I'm glad I ran across this movie.
I didn't watch the movie for the cinematography, I watched it for the actors because there are actually a lot of big name actors in there- not Brad Pitt big but still Alexis Bledel, Shawn's dad from Boy Meets World, guy from She's out of my league, girl from Roswell, etc. They all did great acting jobs (I wish Alexis Bledel had a larger role)but the story kinda faded in and out. They dragged some things on and when they fade out in the middle of the movie I thought something was wrong with my dvd player! Overall, it was a cute movie. If you are having girls over for a girls night in this would be a cute movie. If you recently broke up with someone or had a love crisis and want to watch a movie on it, well than this is for you. Everyone has one of those moments where you second guess everything- this is a story about that. Great gift for older teen or twenty something and it is not that expensive.
Well I was fortunate enough to be a background actor for this movies, plus had the pleasure of filling in for P.A. Seeing the behind thescenes of this movie I really think made me fully appreciate the filmand all the hard work that was put behind it. Jay is a great guy and agreat actor, I hope he prosers well in life and whatever he endures.Quall's, is a very funny guy and motivational to comedy. I could not ofasked for a better crew to handle this film. Each person who had a handin making this Movie, I give my graces to. From lighting and sound, thethe catering, without the help of so many this movie could not havebeen possible. To finally see the trailer is awe inspiring, I can'tbelieve that we all did so much work and it turned out so well.Sincerely Yours, Chantel Regouby
I was hoping for it to get a lot better, and it never did, it was really lame, that's the only way to put it...lame. My friend was embarassed for liking it. It's was a stupid movie, don't watch it.
If you don't like small towns, rural sensibilities or honest depictions of wrestling with believable scenarios look elsewhere. While this is not a gripping drama or a grab your side comedy, it is a good movie that creatively draws you into the dilemma of Reed Fish.If you like comedic dramas, boy meets reality movies, you'll enjoy I'm Reed Fish.
This is an unabashedly feel-good movie, supposedly based on the life of a certain Mr. Reed Fish. The story takes place at a little laid-back town called Mud Meadows, where Fish is the local go-to guy and radio DJ and field reporter. The issues he had to deal with are so mundane he begins to question the real meaning behind his existence. Despite being blessed with a job he is apparently very good at and neighbours who look up to him, and above all a gorgeous fiancee, Fish nonetheless finds his resolve shaken with the reappearance of a childhood sweetheart. As this is a feel-good movie, all must end well. The hero must get the girl of his dreams. But it does feel a bit lame that after the breakdown of the wedding, Fish and his ex-fiancee can remain such good friends. It is hard to imagine that she can carry on a platonic friendship with the guy who dashes her dreams and breaks her heart. Another lame factor is Fish making his life into a movie. This will undoubtedly tear apart old scars and make them bleed again; but then, as in all feel-good movies, all's well that ends well.I cannot say that the acting is mediocre, but the actors do not seem to be given too much space to 'strut their stuff.' Alexis Bledel is beautiful, too beautiful in fact to make it believable that a gorgeous babe like that would be willing to commit her life to a guy like Reed Fish.Overall, this is a nice movie to enjoy on a weekend with either the family or friends over some popcorn. But guys beware, if your girlfriends or fiancees are overly sensitive, this movie might not be a good idea!
Parts of the movie were brilliant! The acting was on cue, Schuyler Fiskwas so wonderful, I wanted to fall in love with her, too! She actuallywrote and performed original songs for the movie! Basically a coming-of-age story set in a very small town, but what setsit apart from some other films is a visceral down-to-earth reality thatmakes it somehow better. It has that Indie feel to it without anypretension or unprofessional elements. It is a really well cast and well done semi-indie film that will garnersuccess if it gets distributed. The crowd at Tribeca Film Fest werelaughing & people had so many questions for the director and writer, itwas awesomely received and really a pleasure to watch.
I watched this movie via Pay Per View on cable with my daughter lastnight. Having watched three other movies this weekend, I think I likedthis one the best. Reed shows a nearly idyllic view of life in a smalltown in the summertime, where all the inhabitants are nice folk, andthe weather is perfect every day. This movie is really about that moment when you are 20-ish and youreally make the big decisions that can determine what the rest of yourlife will be like. Since the writer put his own real name in the titleof the movie, it isn't hard to imagine that this is his story. Yes, this is not the most exciting movie ever, but the main characterwas very likable, the humor was amusing and the girls very pretty. Compared to "Princess Diaries 2", another PG movie I saw this weekend,"I'm Reed Fish" was easily the more enjoyable film.
This movie is well done for the most part, funny and engaging ... to a point. The main character, Reed Fish, wavers between two women throughout - and simply demonstrates that he loves himself more than either of them. We the viewers are supposed to believe that Reed is misunderstood and has, "always tried to be what others expect," while at a more basic level he is simply an irresponsible and self-centered young man, desperate enough to sleep with the prospect he doesn't like so much just so he can keep her on a string (in case the other girl doesn't work out). Spoiler warning! Do not read ahead if you intend to watch the show ...The most irritating part is the way the female characters turn around and act as though Reed has done the right thing in the end. Ugh. NOT such a good object lesson, since everything works out for Reed.
I just came across this movie on cable the other night. I'd never heard of it, but I just loved this quirky little movie! The songs were amazing. One movie reviewer on here mentioned the "poor acting" however, I think that some of the dialogue and acting was intentional - so without giving it away for those that have not seen it - I think that was part of this clever little flick.
This movie was a great movie. I am gilmore fan so I love Alexis Bledel did a faboulous job in I am Reed Fish.Everyone should diffinatly see this movie. It deffinatly deserves A+.
I loved this film and was immediately taken with it until thefilmmakers pulled a fast one - they let the audience know that they hadbeen watching a film all along - they did this by having the frame burnout and when the camera pulled back you could see the film had beenrunning and that you were watching a film - I have never seen this donein a movie before and it turned me off so much that I switched channelsimmediately. What were the producers thinking? Did they actually thinkthat audiences are so gullible that we would accept such blatantmanipulation? I don't think so. I felt betrayed big time and wasgenuinely annoyed at such a cheap stunt that I'm certain the producersthought was creative. Bah humbug - that's what I say.
