Racism Ruins Everything

I saw this film for the first time last night. Two of my friends insisted it was very funny and I needed to see it, so I did. The beginning of the movie showed promise, and I expected it to be something in the vein of Half-Baked. It wasn't. Except for a couple laughable moments, How High is nothing but an incredibly racist piece of trash. I am white and found the movie endlessly offensive. I'm disappointed that my friends (also white) enjoyed it at all. There is no question that many films have been made that disparage black people and I in no way approve of that, but two wrongs do not make a right. Every white character in this movie was either a racist jerk or a complete moron. I'm so tired of seeing these films that treat all Caucasions like wimpy, thoughtless idiots, sending a message of black superiority. Everybody just needs to stop this kind of nonsense. It's fine to have a racist character in order to make a point, but this story had absolutely no heart and was utterly dispicable! I remember hip-hop culture becoming trendy when I was in my early teens. Everyone started wearing the baggy clothes and talking like an ignorant gangsta. I even did it for a while, but soon got over it. The people who act this way need to grow up. Life is too short and important to waste being fake. So many black folks seem to detest other black folks who speak clearly, are educated, and successful. They say that these people have compromised their own culture and are "acting white." What?! You cannot act like a different race! I have all the respect in the world for anyone who wants to make something of themselves and doesn't resign themselves to drugs and violence. Also, know that blacks who are proper and respectable HATE blacks who embrace the stereotype of lazy pot-smoking loserdom. You may think I am taking this movie too seriously since it was intended as a comedy, but I don't think so. My purpose in writing this review is to say that racism of any kind is not funny. I hope Method Man and Redman realize that before making another picture.

Very dumb movie.

I have seen this movie long time ago (back in 2001)... It was thedumbest comedy with African Americans ghettoist ever. The jokes aresimple and plain, the plot is for the kids (actually not - if you don'twant your children to start taking' medicines), and the actors aredisappointing (from my perspective).Two black males are going to a famous University. There they start tomake fun of all the people (especially "crackers" and Asians). I don'teven remember how the movie ends... I guess one of the black studentsis falling in love with the daughter of the president... Don't Know.Don't watch the movie if your IQ is higher than 100.

Only Works because Redman is funny.

This movie is not as good as one might think it is. The only reason why thismovie worked was because Redman's character was pretty funny in the movie,otherwise this movie really isn't that great. Jesse Dylan the son oflegendary Bob Dylan directed this movie, which exlains the name, but he alsodirected American Wedding, which in my opinion is much more of a solid moviecompared to this. Mike Epps from Next Friday & All About the Benjamins israther funny in the little appearances he makes throughout the movie. AlsoLark Voorhies better known as Lisa from "Saved by the bell" makes anappearance as the girl Method Man falls for. This isn't one of those collegemovies where you would like to see over & over again, even once is probablymore than enough. Lets get back to some positives, i thought Redman wasfunny as hell he seems naturally funny, he should definitely do moremovies.I give this movie a 5 / 10. I gave it 5 mainly because Redman made the moviework.

First hour or so hilarious, then it drags listlessly

The first hour or so of this movie was hilarious and had scenes that were genuinely funny and had me laughing more than most comedies that have been released in the past couple years.But, the last half hour drags as if the filmmaker didn't know had to end it and was so concerned with tying up the loose ends that any ounce of humor flew out the window.And, while it is a goofball comedy, the caricature of the Asian character was more than just tongue-in-cheek or corny, but downright offensive, whereas the other one-dimensional characters were just corny.This character was just a new (at the same time, old) version of the Long Duk Dong caricature in "Sixteen Candles." And an even worse version given that some 20 years later after "Sixteen Candles," society and filmmakers still haven't learned that Asian characters who speak bad, stunted English and only want sex are offensive and not funny in the least.But if you can put aside the Asian caricature and the last half hour of this movie, you will get major laughs out of it -- it's just too bad that the filmmakers couldn't extend the energy and humor of the movie's first portion through the end. (and the ending is ultimately a disappointment and seems like the filmmakers didn't know how to end it -- something which plagues many potentially good movies).Ultimately, the overall failure of this comedy is unfortunate, because they had a familiar yet potentially good storyline (if only they had a stronger storyline) and a strong, comedic duo in Method Man and Redman -- While Meth and Red have a good repertoire, it is Method Man who carries the film.The fish-out-of-water storyline exudes success in its opening scenes and at one point, it seems it will rise above the cliches. But sadly, it falls short. Yet it is worth a rental.

An oldie but a goodie

Funny

This film started very well in my opinion Methord man and Redman are alotbetter actors than i expected.This film is very funny and could be in thesame level as Friday,Next Friday and could of surpassed Half Baked, butfails because of a few plot spoilers, the story sounds alot better onpaper,but just didn't work on screen, but if you can over look those certainscenes it really is a funny film.If your gonna see this film watch it withaopen mind and don't expect the best weed film but a good weedfilm.

Highly Underated

This movie is a blast. It definitely deserves better than the communityhere at IMDb has given it. No its not a masterpiece but its got a lightnessthat smooves over any of its problems. Method Man is just insanely funnyand he's got a certain character that really carries the movie. You cantell everyone was having a lot of fun when they made this movie and thatcomes across on the screen in a purely infectious way. It should go withoutsaying that some trees make a nice substitue for popcorn when watching thisflic.

this movie is hella funny. some guys get into harvard and blow some trees and its just a funny movie. and you should definetely go see it.

HILARIOUS!

I seen this movie this weekend and I about died laughing! Method Man andRedman are histarical together. Half-Baked doesn't even compare to thismovie...Actually I can't think of any movie that can! I suggest this movieto anyone looking for a good laugh!

Best movie EVER!!

How High... What can I say about this movie...This movie is the bestmovie i have ever seen in my whole life... I watched it more than 50times and every time I watch it, I find more and more jokes until bynow i almost memorized the movie word by word... its really hard tounderstand every single joke from the first time you watch it.. Buttrust me... You will going to laugh insanely, like you never didbefore.. So if you didn't watch this movie till now you better go buyit or download it immediately and you will know that every word i saidbout this movie is true!! Don't wait, don't say later just go and getit!!

Seriously people this movie is funny

Other reviewers that dont get the humor and take this as a serious movie need to LIGHTEN UP! Seriously this movie cracks me up and I dont get sick of it. I've watched it several times and it still makes me laugh every time. If you are a stoner you'll probaly "get it" a little better and be laughing at these two clowns as they do bust out tons of funny catch phrases, but it is what it is, a stoner comedy made for stoners to laugh at. If you like these type of movies this one is pretty original for what it is and definitely worth adding to your collection because it isnt one of those "watch it once and you're over it" movies it stays funny.

What a movie, this is the best type of comedy, over the top, pushing the envelope type comedy. You gotta love Meth and Red in this one, they flip Harvard upside down. One Work, Brilliant

effective moments every now and again

Silas is a street-wise college student and part-time entrepreneur whostays in school for the sole purpose of having fun; Jamal is a chronicslacker and stoner who lives with his mother and has more thanoverstayed his welcome at a community college. With the help of arecently deceased buddy, and political need for more campus diversity,they get accepted to Harvard where they turn things upside down fortheir snooty classmates and uptight, deeply conservative dean ofadministration. Watchable but forgettable comedy has an enthusiasticcast, and some really solid laughs, but some of the gags are prettyweak and it runs out of energy surprisingly early. **

"How High" is my new definition of Insanely Terrible. After loving so manyfun black/pot movies like "Half Baked" and "Friday", it seemed we would bedestined that something like this would come and take all of my faith inhumanity away."How High" is essentially three things: 1, it's a stereotypical black potmovie, starring Methodman and Redman as two stoner retards who, throughsmoking their death friend Ivory, get into Harvard and then cause havok.2,it's a film that tries to offend everyone, much like better films SouthPark: BLU and Freddy Got Fingered. And 3, it's an absolute atrocity of afilm, a totally worthless bit of junk that not even toddlers couldenjoy.The film's biggest problem seems to be that it can't find its sense ofhumor- this is because it has none. It's all about smoking weed, bangin' hoes,destroying stuff and smoking weed. And also bangin' hoes. Trying to takethe"offend everyone" path, it falls painfully short: while it includes majoranti-white racist jokes (which aren't funny) and also abuses every othersubculture and pop subculture EXCEPT Blacks - none of which is at allamusing - it then misses all of the actual opportunties to poke offensivefun, like the Women's Studies scene which is just immature instead ofoffensively funny. It's bland, appalling crap. The only scene which isclever is when the two losers decide to dig up a corpse to smoke, in whichthe film almost reaches it's aim - but it still falls flat, whilebasicallyany of the audience who hasn't gone outside to throw up is still leftunamused.Redman and Methodman are terrible at acting and should never be allowedneara camera again. Scratch that - they should never be allowed in publicagain.While proving that their acting is (amazingly)worse than their rapping,theystand around looking stupid with a bunch of other acting rejects who can'tuse what little material there is in this stupidity to make a laugh. Thefinal word on this heinous monstrocity is to avoid at all cost. How's thisfor comparison - we watched both this film and a Leslie Nielsonhunk'o'junkcalled 2001: A Space Travesty - a film which was barely about space ANDfeatured a parrot in soup - and the Space Travesty was better. Great movie

I really liked this movie. I mean this movie is kinda underrated. But it was very funny. This movie is a must see. Probbably one of the best of 2001. Rent it. Nuff' said.

Well, if it ain't rice puff daddy? Naw. Thats Run

Once again, narrow and square-minded people. This movie is not for everyone. Now if you are in the core target demographic, this is a great movie, and you loved almost all the jokes, and you recognized a lot of people. If you did not get any of the jokes, did not like the delivery, or the acting, it was not meant for you. It is that simple. For this being their first time out the gate doing an actual feature film, Meth and Red did not do bad @all. They did their thing when their scenes were together to show how they truly vibe, and then they obviously knew let the pros take over and guide them through the rest of the movie.Great comedy scenes. Ivory discusses what can happen to him & it does. Al Shearer("Hits", from his "punked type" show from BET)in the scene when he stole the bike and let it go, and the the trucker ran over it, and your boy was hysterical and was like "Whhaaaaaatt!!?!". Need I even mention Baby Powder and his asst pimp. Sometimes he would have it ready before Baby Powder even asked for it! Come on!!!! It's the small things that make a movie good, and this one had a lot of good & funny material in it. As for the the racial thing. In "classics" such as "Animal House", and the others that the mainstream so boisterously adore for years, there were still mostly segregated casts in the movie(s), I don't care how you look @them. I am not saying this is production is better, but the type of entertainers they are did bring a lot of different characters to the screen and it was not your typical, "Do I have to look @a particular type of person all movie?" It brought out the old adage, "Bring on the music, the weed, and the women", and "let the good times roll" (no pun intended for real that time).Enough said!! I'm out!

A Masterpiece

How High was an excellent film. It starred Redman and Method Man as twopotheads who get into Harvard. To me, this is the best movie of the year.If the people who voted for the Academy Awards had a sense of humor, movieslike this and previous funny movies like "American Pie" and "Scary Movie"would be nominated for those awards. Personally, I think that the Academyonly cares about dumb dramas that are just boring. They should get a senseof humor so that they can enjoy masterpieces like "HowHigh."

Nice and yet short

A great movie not necessary because ofit's artistic value but becauseof the plot and the life style presented.The 2 rappers are perfect fortheir parts and they really make you feel like your there. The comedyscenesare great because they are not specially designed to make you laugh andyetthey do.Anyway it's a very nicemovie which actually is worth seeing.A film designed specially for the rap listeners.
