actually way too funny

This movie aside from the asininely cliché main plot, with the winningmoney and what not. Was awesome, it was just hanging out with the guysand a few funny stunts. Hilarious stunts, i knew what was going tohappen, it was so predictable but when it did happen, it was hilarious.Just Andy Samberg making funny faces and his red neck friend screamingfor 90 minutes would of been funny enough. But they had to go more thanthat. They needed funny quotes, absurd situations, and awesomecharacters, and this movie at one point actually made me puke a littlebit in my mouth because of how hard i was laughing. PLEASE PLEASE don'tmiss this.

Best Comedy in Years

This film stars Andy Sandberg as Rod Kimble a mislead stuntman whoperforms lackluster stunts which often times end up with him beinginjured. Rod has a rag tag group of friends who he calls his crew, thecrew work on everything from team manager (Kevin, Rod's step-brother),to ramp builder (Rico, Rod's friend, then there is Dave who doesn'tseem to have a job, but is hilarious just as well. After the firstcouple of failed jumps he decides to enlist the help of his neighborbecause she has college experience plus he likes her, but he acts sochildish that she does not catch on until the end. The movie is basedon Rod trying to earn respect from his step-father Frank who isconstantly beating him up in little fights and is constantly ridiculingRod about his stunts, but minutes into the movie you the family findsout that Frank has a bad heart problem and only has months to live.After hearing this news Rod goes to his happy place and does thechoreography from Kevin Bacon in Footloose, and comes up with an ideato save Frank by doing one big jump to earn the money for Frank's heartoperation, and so he can finally beat Frank in a battle of respect. Thetheme of this movie is one that is unique in the fact that it seemsnonsensical, but the main theme is to not give up on something if youbelieve in it and when you've got nothing you've got nothing to lose.This movie is just a good time for any fan of the old Adam Sandlermovies that didn't really need a plot because the comedy was enough.This movie is in that same vain and is actually more respected in thefilm community than most Sandler movies, but I believe that is becauseof Sandberg's comedy style and its slight subtleness that Sandler'sfilms lacked because of his formula. The scene in which Rod initiatesDenise the female I mentioned earlier into the crew it is as funny asany moment in recent memory. At first he shines a light in Denise'seyes to get her attention and then when she comes into his garage he ishammering on an engine with a Hulkamania t-shirt and he says "Denisewhat's up" "funky fresh". It's these silly lines that and scenes thatmake this movie comedic gold. This movie is a hilarious movie and theplot while not the best is also hilarious due to the fact that Rod istrying to save his step-father just so he can beat him up and earn hisrespect. Even though it sounds like a foolish movie with a foolish plotit works thanks to the actors and their parts such as Rico who isplayed by Danny Mcbride, Denise who is played by Isla Fisher, Dave whois played by Bill Hader, and Jonathan(Denise's boyfriend) played byWill Arnett. This cast is a who's who of up and coming comedic actorsthat were fortunately put together to create this film.

I hope they re-edit this before it's released

I got to see an early preview of this movie and I hope they have timeto edit it in what ever way they can to improve on it before it comesout Aug 3rd. It stars Andy Samberg from Saturday Night Live as 'Hot'Rod Kimble. He's plays a teenager in a small town who wants to be astunt man like his late father. When we meet him, he's jumping a mailtruck on his mo-ped, yes, a mo-ped, and almost makes it. This would beworthy of a 'Jackass' movie if he wasn't honestly trying to do this.Isla Fisher plays the slightly older and much more maturegirl-next-door, Denise. She seems to like Rod enough to join his'crew'. Jorma Taccone (also SNL) plays his half brother, Kevin, whodocuments the stunts with a camcorder. Sissy Spacek plays Rod's mom,Marie. She remarried Frank Powell, played by Ian McShane. Frank's areal tough guy who enjoys beating Rod in some real drag out brawls.It's clear that Rod's not going to earn Frank's respect till he canbeat him. We find out Frank needs a $50,000. heart transplant and Rodis determined to raise the money just so he 'can beat his ass' oncehe's healed, and prove himself a man. A long fall down a mountain sideconvinces Rod to 'go big' on one stunt. Rod sets out to get seed moneyby charging for doing stunts that would make you cringe if you saw themin real life. Like the human torch- at a children's birthday party.There were those at the showing who managed to laugh at most of thestunts. Just when all hope and money is lost, along comes a sponsor whosaves the day by getting the 15 school buses Rod wants to jump. He getsexclusive broadcast rights and sets up phone lines to get donations.Rod gets a new outfit and a real motorcycle. The whole town turns outand the world tunes in. Does he make the jump? Does he get the girl? Dothey raise the $50k? Does Frank get his ass beat by Rod? Wait till this90 minute movie comes out on video to find out.

Is this what America's humor has come to?

SNL is pretty funny but people who say this is like watching a Shortskit on SNL is a little dumb minded. It's NOTHING like SNL, it's just astupid piece of crap.Andy Samberg tries to act like Jon Heder but fails. Although Jon Hederis only funny in Napoleon Dynamite Andy tries his hardest and peoplethink he's funny.Only funny people in the movie were Danny McBride and Bill Hader. Theonly part that was decently funny with Andy was the pool part.They could have made the "Quiet place" a lot better if they didn't makethe falling scene 3 freaking minutes.The part where he's pronouncing his H's more is retarded. They trygoing with it too long and half the time it looks like Andy is laughingwhile he acts...he's a horrible actor and doesn't deserve to be in amovie.This movie is a joke and is for the simple minded people with the brainof a 10 year old level of comedy. Which is about half the UnitedStates.

Silly little film that is unassuming fun as long as you don't come with high expectations

Rod Kimble is an amateur stuntman, whose antics don't inspire the localpopulation so much as they do amuse them. Always setting up stunts withhis friends, things change when Rod learns that his step-father needsan organ transplant but has no insurance to allow it. Having never yetbeaten his step-father in a fight and keen to humiliate him, Rod isdetermined to save his step-father's life (even if only long enough todefeat him fair and square). In order to do this he decides to jump 13school buses in front of a paying crowd.When this film recently arrived on Sky I must admit that I had neverheard of it and didn't give it much attention. A while later I ended upwatching it for the lack of anything better (well, that's not true – itwas more a matter of looking for "lazy" viewing). Having this approachto the film probably helped me enjoy it because my expectations and mydemands were low and what I found was a daft little "sports underdog"film. Those expecting frequent big belly laughs will be disappointedbecause the film is not that good. However it wisely sets itself firmlyin the small-town loser world that makes it have quit a low-key feelthat is matched by the manner of delivery as well (so much of it feels"homemade" rather than the big film production that it is of course).This allowed it to win me over a touch because I warm to it a littlebit as one would to an indie comedy as opposed to the big star vehicleblockbuster.This doesn't completely redeem it though and it is never as funny noras creative as it would like to have though. Don't get me wrong, it waspretty amusing across the whole film but it doesn't hit the high notesvery often. The cast help to some degree. Samberg in particular has asort of gangly charm to him and he is kept grounded by some nice "goingnowhere" characters from McBride and his other friends. Fisher is askedto be attractive, light and simple and this she does very well, makingher aspect of the film work quite well. Of course she is helped by atypically good turn from Arnett – although I would have liked more timegiven to him. McShane is good in it and I really enjoyed the small turnfrom Parnell (30 Rock's Dr Spaceman).Hot Rod is not a great film by any means but it does have its charm. Itis slightly derivative and not as funny as it would like to be but itis still consistently amusing and with a genial air that makes it hardto dislike. Best approached with low demands but it performs wellenough if you do.

Cheap laughs not for everyone!

This review is from: Hot Rod [HD DVD] (HD DVD) I enjoyed this movie, its filled with low brow humor and near "retarded" schemes! this movie probably isn't for everyone but if you are looking for a lite entertaining nonsensical flick take the plunge you may be surprised!the hd transfer is better than the sd version and worth the purchase if its in a comparable price point to the sd otherwise I keep most of my hd purchases limited to visually and aurally impressive movies!

Hot Rod is hilarious!

This review is from: Hot Rod (DVD) This movie is hilarious! I took my four kids to see it in the theater and they loved it, non-stop laughing! More humor than Napoleon Dynamite and witty references to the '80's movies I loved in college. Definitely worth buying.

SURPRISINGLY FUNNY, IF NOT THAT ORIGINAL!

Andy Samberg is probably best known for his SNL short D. I. C. K. IN A BOX. 'Hot Rod' has a pretty basic premise that we've all seen too many time, but because of Samberg's knack for good comedy and having a great cast around him, this film is funnier than most comedies I've seen lately. It's a cross between every high school misfit comedy and Jackass! This is one film that you will probably laugh more times than not....I know I did!

Stupid but funny!

"Hot Rod" follows the time-honored tradition of SNL cast members (former and current) putting out silly, hackneyed material that rarely suprises but always cracks you up (at least the good ones do). For me, this movie ranks up there with the best of its stablemates (Billy Madison, Tommy Boy, Dirty Work, Zoolander etc) in that it was poorly received by critics, appeals mostly to young adult males, has a tired plot (hapless idiot takes on seemingly insurmountable odds, stumbles along the way but ends up getting the girl and saving the day), yet is hillarious and very quotable. If you don't think there's anything wrong with a movie that entertains (much) more than it enriches, and enjoy stupid jokes and gag humor like those found in the aforementioned movies, then you'll probably enjoy 'Hot Rod'. Bonus: The soundtrack is awesomely 80's and Will Arnette plays a perfect D-bag.

Funny stupidity

The movie is a total stupidity. For some it's fun, for me not. First Ithought that it's a mockery, but at the end of the movie I understood,that it can't be so primitive, stupid and plain. The movie derides manystock moments, stereotypes or patters from American cinema history of80s.I think the best in this film is nice music of 80s (Europe, CuttingCrew...) playing while the main hero trains or going to make a Did -that's some kind of nostalgia.I can't recommend this movie to someone to have fun, to laugh out loudor something. Only people who like 80s, that music, deridingstereotypes may like some moments of the film.

The first time I saw it

The first time I saw this movie i only got about 30 mins in and fellasleep. I thought the movie was boring, but my girlfriend stayed up andwatched it. She told me it was hilarious, so I watched the whole thing.OMG this is the funniest movie I have ever seen!!!! There are some ofthe most random scenes.The more I watch it the more jokes I see in the movie. I want to makeout with this movie.You seriously have to watch the whole thing. It starts a little slowbut it gets to be a non stop laugh-a-thon!Go rent this movie!

Surprisingly Funny!

This review is from: Hot Rod [HD DVD] (HD DVD) I remember seeing the trailer for Hot Rod on a DVD that I had either purchased or rented. I remember thinking to myself "oh boy, another crapfest". When I saw that it had been released I wanted to give it a try out of loyalty to Lorne Michaels/SNL and some of the amazing work they've done. I have to say that I found it hilarious. SNL movies are hit and miss at best and this one was definitely a hit for me. Now I'm not saying that everyone will find this movie as funny as I did.If you liked Napoleon Dynamite or Grandma's Boy you'll want to give Hot Rod a chance.This is also an HD DVD review so I would like to touch on the Audio/Video quality.VideoYou can tell Hot Rod was a cheap production. It fairs better than a SD DVD release, but not by much. Definitely nothing to write home about.AudioI'm not much of an audiophile, but I have to say I was pretty impressed with the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack throughout the film. The music was mixed into the soundtrack nicely and the dialogue was done very well too.I would recommend Hot Rod for a definite rental for most. I myself am very happy with my purchase.

Best Comedy this year!

It's not very often i feel compelled to document my opinion on anythingi watch,read or listen to,but Hot Rod is an exception to the rule. Thismovie was a hoot from start to finish.... With movie newcomer AndySamberg at the helm this film is a roaring success. The film has agreat foundation and story from the quirky relationship betweenbrothers Rod(Samberg) and Kevin to the highly amusing love/haterelationship between Rod and step dad Frank(Ian Mcshane)and thenthere's Rod's crazy buddies! . The film basically follows the pursuitof Rod's 2-bit Stuntman career trying to follow in his belated realfather's foot steps. I won't elaborate on the story too much but thejourney involved is highly amusing,engrossing and emotional. All of thecast put in a solid performance with Samberg & McShane steeling theshow. The pace and quality of content barely dips through out. Althougha lot of this film has a familiar layout to other comedy's such asBilly Madison and Nacho Libre and has the usual clichés such as Rodcompeting with a rich, highly successful jerk for Denise's hand, thefilm still manages to offer something different, a new energy a uniqueblend of humour and the strange. For me it had echoes of Ghost World,Nacho Libre, Freddy got fingered amongst others. With a great sense ofthe 80's present from the soundtrack(Europe,John Farnham) to theattire, it's wonderful personality and side splitting humour i urgeeveryone to give this Film a chance you won't be disappointed.Samberg the new Sandler?

Amazing Stunt: Hot Rod Jumps The Shark

Firstly I want to say that I'm a fan of the Lonely Island, these guys'website. I've seen a lot of their videos and I really like their humor.And their stuff on SNL is great. Having read a few reviews, I can't sayI had high hopes for Hot Rod, but clung to the chance it would be good.Nonetheless, I was incredibly disappointed. It was, as the LonelyIsland guys would say, not-Kablamo.Hot Rod never quite found it's feet, switching tone every couple ofminutes. They would set up sentimental moments and then undercut themwith a joke, which is often great comedy, but these jokes always fellflat, so the reversals never worked, nor did the sentimentality,missing the opportunity to make the audience feel something or laugh, adouble strike-out. At times it seemed like a Napoleon Dynamite rip-off- the dance sequence, the non-jump over the curb, a guy named "Rico".I'm surprised there wasn't a llama that Rod had to jump over.I truly felt sorry for the lead girl, Isla, if you could call it alead. She had no jokes, no character, no depth. The love story wasn'tthere. No one cared. She was infinitely more utilized in WeddingCrashers in a smaller role. Andy Samberg was a little scattered. Tomake a movie like this work, you need someone like Will Ferrell, whomakes you laugh at every scene and puts so much conviction into therole. I couldn't tell if Samberg had a lack of conviction or was justan actor struggling with continuity in his character. Granted, therewasn't a character formed through the writing, an added challenge.Honestly, I think what it is is he's good on the SNL sketches andLonely Island sketches, but can't carry a movie. I'd be interested tosee what happens with him in a good script.In the best of my estimation, here's what I think happened: you takethree kids who are amazing at short format sketches, you hand them ascript, they chop it into short sketches that they think are funny, thestory is sacrificed, and the audience gets 90 minutes of an unrefinedcollage.The theater I sat in had 10 people who groaned through some parts,laughed at a few, and mainly sat in silence. I wanted to like it sobadly. I think these guys are talented. Perhaps movies are not theirright medium. I'd give them another shot. But land the jump next time.

Hot Rod Zoidberg!

Let me start out by saying: this was a funny movie. Its plainridiculous in the way it presents itself. Obviously, a young man whoscrews up every stunt he does is quite funny.The first two stunts were just laugh out loud funny. The first, theunsecured ramp jump over a van that turns out so horribly executed thatits funny. Then next was the flat ending to the pool jump, which endedwith a small dive into the pool. What made it even funnier was that thegirl he was chasing was watching.In many ways, the character reminded me of Napoleon Dynamite. Geeky,ordinary, but funny when combined. Some of the scenes were just wacky,but some were asinine in the way it was delivered.Overall, some of the bits wore out on me. But many of them had greatstaying power. Well worth it to a person who loves insane wacky moviesthat seem to make no sense. Just like "Leonard Part 6" and "Balls ofFury". And you just have to love the Taco v. Sandwich fight. "A-"

Weirdly Wonderful!

Seriously this is the funniest movie I have seen since "WeddingCrashers." The trailers do not do this film justice...in fact, althoughI am a huge Andy Samberg fan, I did not want to see this movie becausethe trailers looked utterly ridiculous. But I was proved wrong. Thismovie is wonderfully random, witty and just an all-around entertainingmovie. If you're a fan of Samberg's website with SNL writers, Jorma andAkiva you will totally appreciate the crazy humor.It has great memorable lines that I'm sure people will be quoting foryears to come and laughs non-stop. This is a movie for people with anoff-kilter sense of humor. A lot of people in the theater in which Isaw the advanced screening made frequent "This is too weird!"comments...an yes, the movie is weird. I'd compare to "ArrestedDevelopment" or maybe even "Happy Gilmore" to the extreme. I'd say alot of people won't get the random humor. But if you like strangethings, then you'll love this film for sure!

Unexpectedly very entertaining!

I'm the kind of guy that might smile once during a whole comedy moviebut during Hot Rod sometimes you do naturally laugh out loud coz ucan't help it...This guy Andy Samberg nailed his role big time and Ifeel he really does deserve a chance for stardom - he could be the newAdam Sandler easily is one can give a comparison but to be completelyhonest, most of Sandler's movies sort of force you to laugh at very oldjokes...Ben Stiller does this even more, but that's why the worldbrings us guys like Samberg...at least someone's actually trying, andmanaged quite well too :) Thinking about it...a sequel wouldn't be abad idea for Hot Rod either...at least we could get to know whether heactually killed Frank at the last moment of the movie when Frank says"You've gotta be kidding me", holds his heart, and falls down
