While backpacking through Europe, college students Paxton and Josh seek the ultimate vacation through sex, drugs and unforgettable experiences. When a friendly stranger informs the two of a hostel in Bratislava that offers the most beautiful and promiscuous women in all of Europe, Paxton and Derek trek with their new Icelandic friend Oli to find the hostel that sounds too good to be true. When arriving to Bratislava, the trio found that the hostel was everything and more of what they expected. The events that follow are sure to deliver the unforgettable vacation that the two were looking for.
Before seeing this movie in theaters i had looked for it on a fewinternet forums and herd it was going to be very sickeningly gory, being a splatter fan i was interested. After seeing the movie i wasreally impressed with the quality of work that had gone into making themovie as a whole, not just the special effects, there is a lot of verygood character development, so you really feel for them when thingsstart to go bad.A word to the wise, I have a VERY strong stomach for Gore and i foundthis movie quite intense. you see ALL of the torture, no cuts, verylittle movie magic. not for the squeamish.I truly enjoyed this movie, and fully endorse anyone who is a fan ofEli Roth's work to go see this, he has really outdone himself thistime.
I saw Hostel when I hadn't enough money to do anything else on a recenttrip to Edinburgh. I've never been more disappointed with a trip to thecinema. Ever. This film has the worst, most ludicrous attempt at astory line, made all the more painful by the p*ss poor attempt to coverthis with excessive nudity and explicit gore. The first 25 minutes orso was like a cheap softcore porno, which ultimately led into a tenuouslink whereby people were seduced/abducted and murdered in horribleways. Good scary movies tend to have a slightly better script than thisdrivel. This waste of film just went for all out gruesomeness in theplace of any logical script. Utter, utter smack. DO NOT GO AND SEE THISMOVIE.
Let me preface this post by saying that I was really, REALLY excited tosee this movie. A gore-filled horror movie stamped with QuentinTarantino's approval (as a "presenter") sounded pretty good. Openingweekend, 9:30 Show... sold out, 10:30... football-field-long-line. Wewaited anyway. I'll cut to the chase. I thought the film was poorlywritten, poorly acted (for the most part), and just poorly done ingeneral. It left nothing to the imagination, and there was simplynothing interesting about it. As far as gore is concerned (if that'sall your looking for), Saw and Saw II blow Hostel out of the water. Ifit wasn't for the pair of gorgeous Russian girls that rarely haveclothes on, this would have been a total bust. The first words out ofmy roommates mouth upon exiting the theater were, "Why the hell did youwant to see that?" I spent the rest of the night explaining why Ithought it sounded like it would be a great movie, and buying thembeers to compensate for the disappointment. Hostel was a huge let down.Sorry folks.
This movie is just another horror teen movie. And this time, even morestupid: it presents a wrong stereotype of Europe and Europeans, withgeographical and language mistakes(like in Praga every signal is inGerman). Most of characters are just stereotypes, so you can picture how muchtime the writer took to develop them. The way the story connects thecharacters it's quite silly and sometimes makes no sense. Plus, thescript seems to have some very big "holes" in it and some of them arequite remarkable. I don't want to spoil them so you'll laugh when yousee it if you haven't seen it yet.Of course that's just my opinion... It sucks.
This is the new breed of horror film, which has become increasingly popular in the past few years. Following in the popularity of "Saw", "Hostel" is another chapter in the psychological chop-'em-up. Pretty simple story, about 3 young tourists who are lured to a youth hostel in an obscure eastern Europe town. Typical teen dangers arise ( sex, drugs, and strangers) that always result in trouble. The movie does have moments of inspired tension, with it's ghostly town residents,a concrete killing field, and it's redemptive finale. It even tried to make the characters 3 dimensional ( could the virginal friend be [...]? What fuels our hero? and we have a promiscuous...father? ), but it seemed there wasn't enough time to care about those shadings, and instead of a paint brush.. here comes the axe... or chainsaw, or blow torch, or machete, or hammer.. at one point it's like shopping in aisle 5 at your local home depot. Some of the scenes are disgusting, but i've seen more inspired horror scenes. I think some of the most horrific things that happen in the film, actually don't involve the aforementioned utensils, but how people care so little about a fellow human being. Is it groundbreaking... no, but is it entertaining ... yeah. It's a horror film that serves it's purpose. It didn't make me scream...but it made a good attempt.
However, there was potential in this movie, too bad the ScreenWriterdidn't bother to include anything of value except the same Ole mundanehorror crap we've already been desensitized toward. The potentialcould've been.. nay forget it, why should I give you any ideas to writea better Screenplay. I won't get any credit or money for it, so figureit out for yourself or give the job to somebody who has better ideas. At least, to some point it makes you wonder if people are really thatsadistic ( besides the writer of this idiot movie designed for Cavemen). Overall, I gave it a 3 because 1 point for potential. 1 point forthe pretty girls and the Mexican guy that spoke German. And, 1 pointonly cause the end was redeeming. I don't think very many people areinto watching another person get tortured. You'd have to be a reallysick minded person to enjoy that part of the film. I mean even just forthe thrill of it is quite primitive, violent and really dumb. Also, when the whore was taking the Mexican guy to the so called " ArtMuseum" I think a normal person would've read the signs way way back inthat situation and just skipped town and then contacted the AmericanEmbassy. Most normal people would do that. Steer clear of the troublethen acquire good solid back-up. Of course, this is just a movie, butstupid plot's make me angry. Fire the writer, hire someone with betterideas.PS
5.8/10, seriously??. I guess half the people who watched this film wereeither blind, deaf or both. I think that the main problem withexperiencing this type of movies is that viewers empathize too muchwith the protagonist/s.The greatness of this movie can only be seen if we find the right"ratio" between empathy and carelessness. We can then see what amasterpiece Eli Roth has prepared for us. In Hostel, there's presentedthe side of humanity we've never imagined that could exist. But couldit? In my opinion that's also one of the questions Eli poses. Couldthis "hostel scenario" really be possible. Could our morale be or everbecome this way, that we would be able to commit such acts (as depictedin film) out of pure pleasure? As for a psychological mind f*** this movie succeeds perfectly-itcompels us to accept the torture (in the movie, as a "what would youdo" situation) and life as it is; but as I mentioned before, we mustn'tget to "involved" with the main character in order to realize this.
Brutal stuff. And I use that in the most negative sense as opposed tothe violent sense. The violence is so overly stylised that I foundmyself in hysterics laughing as opposed to the horrifying reality ofthe violence in Wolf Creek.Comparing this to Wolf Creek or Saw is like comparing Star Crash toStar Wars.It feels like it was written by a 14 year old whose knowledge of theworld outside of America came from Eurotrip, except they decided toremove whatever little (and I stress the word "little") bit of humourthat movie possessed and replaced it with a soft-porn horror pretender.Every attempt at dark comedy tried in this movie had me and my friendslooking at each other and bursting out laughing at the pitifulattempts.I really couldn't be bothered going into any detail but this one littlepoint should give you an idea of how patently ridiculous the movie is.They are given the location of the hostel in Slovakia and told thelocal girls are remarkably sex starved due to the lack of men becauseof "the war." What war would that be exactly?? Slovakia broke from theCzech Republic without much happening back in the early 90s.Slovakia, Slovenia, what the difference eh? Avoid at all costs.
This movie has nothing to do with entertainment. It is dull, unnecessarily alongated, and seems as the first part is a completelydifferent film than the other half. It is cruel and sadistic, and onlyrecommended for people attended to sado. Quite boring though, 'causeyou see the people's suffering about 20 minutes, and it becomes quitedull hearing the continuous screams. The setting unnecessarily breaksdown the image of Bratislava. There wasn't even a nice part of it inthe film. The city is completely different from it's actual state. Allin all, if you would like to spend an hour and a half wondering whenyou should stop the movie, I really recommend it, but otherwisedefinitely not.
This film was different for me. I still haven't determined how much Ilike it yet. I love horror movies and this one I had very lowexpectations for, as I do many in this genre and time, and it actuallysurprised me. I think it was different in that it didn't have yournormal horror movie monster who was running all over killing. The plotwas good, the story line was very believable. I don't ever get grossedout on horror movies, but this one just left me with an unsettlingfeeling, which in my opinion, any movie that can do that is worthwatching. I thought it had a good twist and I would actually liked tohave seen more. I think the fact that this could happen somewheresomehow makes it a little nerve racking. In any case I enjoyed itoverall and I plan on watching it again to see how much.
I saw this on cable, I have been seeing it in pieces having seen theend first. I thought it built up a lot of suspense and I know he wasvery angry the main character for what he did in the end. I do liketales of vengeance so it was fine with me.I was then able to see almost the whole thing and it was really fine. The Eurotrash girls are horrible bitches in it. I have myself beentired of them at work here. I know they think Americans are stupid andthey are getting away with something and it annoys me. There is more ofan edge to the other lesser known parts of Europe.I don't usually like slash things but I was concerned about them andthe danger they were in. There are holes in the story as I don't thinkthe kids would help and they were annoying. The part at the "museum"you wonder why he is still going. It shows the less good parts ofpeople - man that people don't want to see.The lead guy who gets out is really good as an actor. The Oriental girlalso good in the end. Some of it also unknown I wondered about and hedidn't see police why. It would not be good for young children. Please do not comment on spelling etc I am in hurry and know terrible.I am a dumb blonde in Mensa.I did miss the very beginning but I think not much and they seem niceguys as it goes. It was on again and I was tired will try to watch.
Eli Roth is quickly making a huge name for himself in the modern world of horror filmmaking. With the debut Cabin Fever, Roth showed us his wide, unflinching knowledge of the great horror movies from the 70s and 80s that gave him his inspiration. While Cabin Fever was more of an homage film, with story not really being the focal point, Hostel is pretty much a straigt-up horror film, and a great one at that.Josh and Paxton are two American backpackers in college who are taking a road trip to Europe to get away and relax before they both go into the next phase of their lives (law school, etc.). Along their trip, they meet up with Oli, an Icleandic backpacker who is just as wild and offensive as the two Americans. We aren't really engineered to care much about these main characters. The first half of the movie is more about all the wild, deranged things that go on in Europe, and how easy it is to get women, drugs, or whatever you want. Basically a soft-core porn film, the opening 45 minutes of Hostel serves purely as setup for the horrible, disgusting things that we all know are coming. After visiting a hostel in Bratislava, Josh and Paxton get a little worried when Oli disappears without a word of goodbye or anything. So they both set out to find out what happened to them, and they both get lured into the trap that has been set for many young, stupid foreigners to get what's coming to them.Once the torture sequences start, the movie changes completely, obviously. Surprisingly, I found none of the gore really shocking, or anything that new to me, but then again, I have seen pretty much any horror movie you can name. The gore isn't amazing, but the acting is surprisingly good, and the atmosphere is truly amazing, creepy, and disconcerting. Rather than being a real "horror" film, this movie falls more into the "shock and disgust" category than it does into the scare category. Eli Roth really has grown as a filmmaker. If you watch Cabin Fever, and then watch Hostel, you can see many differences that make Hostel a much better movie. Hostel is much more suttle and controlled than Cabin Fever was. Cabin Fever was so chaotic and random, that you didn't know what was going on half the time. Hostel, on the other hand, knows exactly what it wants to do, and the entire movie is focused around making a singular point. Also, I loved the ending of Hostel. I know a lot of people who were disappointed and thought it was too cliched, but personally, I thought that it was a well thought out ending, and it didn't make the viewers leave the theater feeling absolutely depressed and suicidal. The other part of Hostel that I loved was a single scene near the end of the film, when one of the characters actually gets dragged into a conversation with one of the torturers. This dialogue is great, and it is with this dialogue that Roth makes the point he wants to make with this movie. You can really take any point you want out of it, but I felt that Roth was trying to send a message about human nature, and the dark rivers that run throughout each of us at certain moments of time. Let's just say that Sigmund Freud would love this movie.
This movie really contains nothing out of the ordinary. The "gore factor" was no higher than other movies of its genre (i.e.Texas Chainsaw Massacre, A Nightmare on Elm Street). For a movie thatseems to be banking on the prospect that it is one of the most bloodyfilms going, it falls short. The plot becomes evident very early, so there is no real suspense (suchas in Saw). The camera work is standard and the horror comes not frompsychological suspense, but from the amount of blood on the screen (seeabove). The only redeeming qualities I found in this movie were the abundanceof nudity (not really something to sell a movie on) and Ollie. Ollie'santics make the movie almost worth watching. My suggestion, wait until it comes out on video and then talk someoneelse into paying for the rental.
I'm sorry to say that this movie was soooo bad, that it deserves -5 (negative five) stars; what I hated about the movie was that the first half was like Euro Trip (which was a good comedy) and the last half was like Saw, in other words a comedy and a horror movie mixed together in a bad way. The acting sucked! The villain was a wimp until the final scene! And overall this movie was gross and not scary! If you look for scary movies stick with: HALLOWEEN, HELLRAISER, THE FOG, STIGMATA, THE RING, THE EXORCIST, POLTERGEIST and JAWS 1+2, and if you are really looking for blood try THE DENTIST
I would like to say that as Eli Roth has been annointed the new face ofhorror I believe he has a long way to go. He has brought backexploitation movies but find myself feeling like I am watching morealong the line of snuff films while watching them. He may like thisfeeling but I would like to see what he could do with morepsychological material. These are the true forms of horror. The moviesthat make you hind under your covers when you get home rather than makeyou sick to your stomach while you watch it. Wes Craven looked intothis with Red Eye going from chop and crop cinema to a thriller. Ithink there is room for both forms. I can appreciate the gratuity butit takes too long for the story to get going. Basically this is afifteen minute porn fest with an hour of introduction.
"Hostel" (2005) is the latest film by "Cabin Fever" director Eli Roth. One thing I can say about this film is the gore, gore, gore! There's alot of it so this movie isn't for the squeamish. Along with lots ofT/A, this film is a horror fan's treat. Taking place in exoticAmsterdam, the film takes time to get going (about 30 minutes to get tothe gore), but once there, it's one helluva ride! Though the dialoguedoesn't really hold merit and the script is also somewhat predictable,Jay Hernandez (of "World Trade Center" fame) does a great job in thelead role as Paxton (one of two friends from America in Amsterdam onvacation). What happens to him and his friend is so frightening andsickening, you have to see the film to believe it. A shocker of a film- at 7 out 10.
I was looking forward to this movie because I thought it might fill thevoid of decent horror films that has existed for the past decade. However, while viewing the film I realized that this is one of the mostoverrated films I have seen. This film would have been better off as apornographic film considering the first thirty minutes is basicallythat anyway. What makes my previous comment valid is that the smallamount of violence that actually occurred in the film was not actuallyas intense as the reviews might suggest. I admit I am not easilyscared, but this movie made me feel bad for providing revenue for itsmakers. I know many of you film-goers have faith in Quentin Tarantino, but I think he made a mistake to endorse and produce this film.
When I saw Hostel for the first time in theaters I had deemed it one ofthe best horror movies I've seen in a while. If you liked Audition,Cabin Fever, The Wicker Man, or maybe even The Crazies, you'll lovethis movie. If not, well, then there's probably no point in watchingthis movie.Let me also say, f*** Wolf Creek. By that I mean that unlike WolfCreek, in Hostel you actually have a sense of care for the charactersin the movie. They're believable, and they're not stupid by any means. The acting is great. Jay Hernandez is awesome. They did a great jobmaking these characters believable and realistic. They never makestupid decisions (aside from one point in the movie with Hernandez, butwhen you watch the movie you understand), and you can actually seeyourself doing pretty much exactly what the characters do. I've heardarguments that the characters are a**holes and not believable, but Ipretty much saw myself fitting exactly in Jay Hernandez's shoes, so Iguess that makes me an unbelievable a**hole. What was so great about this movie was that I had so many emotionswatching this movie. It was suspenseful, frightening, hilarious, andjust overall entertaining. I spent a great deal of the movie eitherwith a huge grin on my face or clinching to my seat hoping that thecharacters would get out alright. It's something you just rarely see inhorror flicks and Hostel gets it right.Add on to the fact that there is so much nudity and gore and, hell, yougot a horror masterpiece! The women are extremely hot too. I generallydon't give a s*** about nudity in movies, but these women were so goodlooking. It's pretty bloody as well, but it felt like it was missing. They said they didn't cut out much (like 15 seconds or something), butit seemed like a lot wasn't shown that should have been. No biggythough. Even if this movie contained no blood or nudity it would stillbe great.I highly recommend this movie, especially to fans of horror. If you arenot a fan of horror or have an appreciation for all of its sub-genres,you may not enjoy this as much as I did. Be warned, the 10 out of 10 Igive it is based on a scale of horror movies. It's a movie that 20years from now I feel will be one of the top names representing thisperiod of time in horror movies (much like Night of the Living Dead forits time, and Evil Dead 2 during the 80's). It has its fair share ofhate, but almost every horror classic goes through it.
writer/director Eli Roth { cabin fever } and producer Quentin Tarantino{ reservoir dogs , pulp fiction ] team up to create a sick fetish fromunderground and deliver more disturbing images then saw and auditioncombined , although the film had potential i feel as if the directorfocused more on blood and vicious violence then a complete story . themain characters played there role as they were intended to but the plotfell downwards half way through, i can honestly say that the blood andgore saved the movie if it wasn't for the madness beyond the walls ofterror this film would have been nothing more then another 8 dollarsdown the drain. Eli Roth does very well know how to get people tosquirm in there seats but needs to improve on developing a storylinemore then blood and guts thrown in your face ....
This could have been a much better film. First of all, the maincharacters were so annoying you didn't care if they were killed. Thenhaving them scream four letter words at their killers was just plainridiculous. If someone is swinging a power drill at me I am not goingto scream "F**K over and over. It got interesting when they showed whythe killers were doing what they did but then they dropped the ball onthat aspect and went right back to a silly chase scene.I was expecting more from Quentin's production team. I guess teenagerslike this kind of stuff but I need more than gore and foour letterwords to keep me interested. Sorry, I didn't like this film at all.
