Super Cute and Funny

I went and saw this movie with my mother and younger brother and let mejust say we ALL loved it. My brother usually is too antsy to sitthrough theater flicks, but he stayed put the whole time. My mom and Igot quite a few genuine laughs in and left the cinema all smiles!! Withsemi-adult, but kid-friendly humor, such as: "I almost jelly-beaned inmy pants", said by E.B., who poohs in the form of the Eastercandy-favorite.Russell Brand's voice absolutely makes the entire movie! His character,E.B. is incredibly likable. Even his "character flaw" is something youcan hardly blame him for: A dream of being a drummer.Definitely worth the outrageous movie ticket price of today.

A Nutshell Review: Hop

Just as how Santa Claus stories work through their way through theChristmas period, Hop brings forward the Easter season some three weeksearly with a kids film that combines the best of live action andanimation in yet another talking animal story, which is something quiteexpected when you combine filmmakers who had worked on Alvin and theChipmunks, and the producers of Despicable Me, who probably would havefloated the idea that cute yellow things make for comedic villainssince they're going against type.Hop is a tale about sons being unable to live up to the ideals of theirfathers, being told what is expected, being seen as soft and unable toexert any say in what they really want to do in life. When we first seeEB (or short for Easter Bunny, voiced by Russell Brand), "plush toy"comes to mind for its incredibly cute design when the wide eyed bunnytours and allows the audience to see first hand what would be theequivalent of Santa's operations that the Easter Bunny adopts, withmultitudes of chocolate and candy making machines all outsourced not toelves, but to chicks to operate and churn them out, before makingdeliveries in one single day to all the kids. But as EB grows up, his propensity to take on the family business, orrather his calling in life, takes a hit and wanes because he aspires todabble in music and play drums. Rather than take over from his father,he runs away to Hollywood to seek out his fortunes and thereby puttingEaster potentially on hold, and bumps into Fred O'Hare (James Marsden),who is also kicked out of his family home because his father and familymembers find it a tad ridiculous that he mucks around home for the lastone year doing nothing. So it's a chance meeting of two similar sonsset to prove themselves in a whole new world, and bring about the usualkids theme of friendship, perseverance, and plenty of juvenile comedy.Look out for David Hasselhoff playing himself, and the requisite cutebunnies collectively known as the Pink Berets who would probably stealthe show.I have to admit though that some of the jokes do work, since it's quitea wide spectrum from the usual toilet humour - EB poops delicious,multi-flavoured candy! - to a hilarious get up of the song I Love Candywith the duo continuing a ruse from earlier involving EB pretending tobe a plush toy. This aspect of the film compensates for the lack ofsophistication of the plot which for some weird reason has Fred notbeing satisfied with having validated that he's not crazy with hisyoung time witnessing of the Easter Bunny going about his one dayroutine, but desiring to instead become a bunny himself. That brought about what I thought was the most direct reference back toDespicable Me with the mindless bantering amongst the minions of theEaster Bunny's factory, where second in command Carlos (Hank Azaria),in the absence of EB and his dad getting old, secretly coverts a plotto usurp the festivity and run the entire show himself. While theminions have different designs and varying degrees of intelligence, thechicks here adopt a uniform look, and as expected there's always asmart alecky character to become cannon fodder for laughs.Besides priming itself for a respectable box office result when theEaster holiday rolls along, what this film would probably successfullydo is to ramp up demand for rabbits and chicks amongst its targeteddemographic, so parents, do spare a thought and taper those short termwants. Strictly for the kids. Do stay tuned until after the end creditsfor a scene to witness James Marsden's Mandarin diction.

The only thing missing is any real wonder, imagination or comic verve.

Buyer beware...

This review is from: Hop Blu-ray Combo Pack (Blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy+UltraViolet) (Blu-ray) I just learned that the number for the ultraviolet copy is ALSO the number for iTunes, just thought you should know even though it does not say so it worked for me.Update: I also learned when I went to claim my ultraviolet copy that you get to choose your digital copy format (one of four formats). This is probally why the code worked in iTunes. Just a side note for those new to ultraviolet: the stream quality is very poor for 1080i & p TV's and computers, but does show well on iphones and other SMALL devices.

It Tries But Fails to Tell A Story

This fantasy tries with a few laughs and not too clever puns and quips.I just needed a meaningful storyline. I wanted to say that it wasenjoyable but the truth is it reeked of the old lame Disney scriptsthat failed so miserably from the 60's and 70's. All too often theactors hammed it up and literally overacted to the point it detractedfrom enjoying this feebled film. Perhaps the kids will buy into thesimple and corny plot but not the adults who expect a bit more thanthat. Again, it was the script and flimsy plot that let me down.Copycat of Christmas images like Santa Claus with the Easter Bunny wasanother sign of a weak story concept. Using a sleigh so similar toSanta's was just another example. 4 STARS

Hop can't even find anything funny to do with Kaley Cuoco.

Perfectly pleasant, funny, if unexceptional Easter holiday movie.

So Glad Not in 3D - Waste of $$

The great actors in this movie all came off as kinda queer. I'd be embarrassed to have this film on my resume. Stupid story, Azaria did very well, and it lacked excitement or action. If it was in 3D, I'd definately ask for my money back! 3D is a JOKE!!! My 7 year old and her friend liked it, but didnt get some of the puns and Hasselhoff was funny, but only to people who know his history. Surprised it won opening weekend.

What a waste of good CGI

Here we go again: Another lousy film that combines live-action withcomputer animation. On the good side, the CGI of this movie is quitegood. The appearance of the animated characters is cute and way moreappealing than in movies like "Garfield" or "Alvin and the Chimpunks". On the bad side, "Hop" is just more of the same boring stuff that todayis presented as "family entertainment": A dumb story filled withannoying(And unlikeable characters) lame jokes, irritating clichés andstereotypes, a vague and unoriginal message...So, basically in whatconcerns to the plot, "Hop" isn't much better than the awfullive-action version of any cartoon.Somebody will say that this is just "a kid's movie", but personally, Ithink that children deserve something much better than this.2/10 The worst part of "Hop" is that is not funny or interesting atall.

Bill Goodykoontz 2012-05-22 04:36:23

If you're 12 or younger, you'll think it's hilarious. If you don't? It's going to be a long 95 minutes.

save your money

This was one of the movies that can wait for T.V. showing. I don't even think you should waste your money renting it on DVD. I am a 40 year old female and one that love children and family movies. I take my son to every children's movie that come out. I took my son, nieces, and nephews to this movie, ages, 15, 13, 11, 10, 9, 7. My son, the seven year old fell asleep half way through the movie. My 10 year old nephew, and my 9 year old niece's eyes kept closing and opening throughout the movie. My 13 year old niece told me that when she went to the restroom in the middle of the movie, she wasn't even concerned, cause she didn't think she would miss much. I read some of the reviewers who gave positive feedbacks, specially the voice of EB, Russell Brand. Russell Brand was horrible. I don't think he is funny at all. Some of the parts where he is making jokes and trying to be funny doesn't even seem funny, cause his voice is so unemotional. No Emotions at All! I think the movie would have been better if, they had chosen a different voice for EB. The visuals are great, but that's not even enough to save the movie. The only funny parts are the ones you see in the Trailer. When I saw the commercial I thought the baby chicks will make the movie funny, like the bunions (spelling?) did for Despicable me, nope, not even close.

Hop

If you were sad that the world had yet to see an animated/live-action hybrid film catering specifically to crowds anticipating the secular aspects of Easter, chin up! In the grand tradition of films like The Smurfs and Alvin and the Chipmunks comes Hop, the tale of a CGI rabbit who dreams of becoming a drummer and instead crosses paths with a slacker human with a surprising knack for delivering Easter candy to kids the world over. Let's be honest here: Alvin and the Chipmunks made over $350 million worldwide at the box office and spawned two sequels, and Hop made over $180 million itself. In other words, even though the movie was horrible, it's pretty clear I am not the target demographic. Want something silly and formulaic to babysit the kids while you tend the barbecue? Here you go.

I love Hop :)

I absolutely adore Hop! I felt pretty silly as an eighteen year old watching this in theatres with my friend and about fifty other young ones. And I also felt like it was just going to be yet another lame child level movie. BUT With Russell Brand's Humor and the cuteness of the bunnies and other animal characters I LOVED HOP. and ive been waiting to find it in wal-marts just to find out that its not even out yet. what bologna. :(

Rebuffering

Frustratibg to have the movie stop numerous times to Rebuffer. This happens every time on amazon. Other service don't do it as often?

Roger Moore 2012-05-19 09:09:22

Would it kill a writer or three to find a couple of laughs in all this? You've got Hugh Laurie and Russell Brand and you can't give them a couple dozen zingers to make this thing move along?

SnakesOnAnAfricanPlain 2012-05-18 21:04:24

Hop (2011)

This movie was obviously shat out to earn a quick buck over Easter.Mission accomplished. It starts off terribly with a narration by JamesMarsden telling us "This is the story of the first human Easter Bunny."Right then all tension is lost and the story becomes pointless.Marsden's troubles finding a job and being a disappointment to hisfather mean nothing, as we know he'll get a great job in the end. Thecomedic interview scene isn't funny because we know this isn't the jobhe'll get. And the threat by the chick trying to take over Easter isdull because, well, we all know how this is going to end because youJUST TOLD US!!! Sure, you knew how it would end even without themtelling you, but at least pretend you're trying something different. The comedy is pretty much miss, but I'm sure the target audience willlaugh at the bunny pooing jelly beans. I was impressed that there wasno forced romantic subplot for the human or bunny. This saved me fromenduring another 15 minutes of the movie. The relationships between thesons and their fathers' was a bit of a miss, as Marsden came off as adick of a son, and Laurie came off as a dick of a father. Perhaps itwould have made more sense to team Marsden with Laurie and Brand withCole. Other aspects annoyed me, such as the whole house sittingsubplot. It was totally uncalled for, and all it did was make me wonderwhat kind of person can afford a mansion, but needs someone to housesit. The original owners never even return for a comedicmisunderstanding.

Entertaining (If Not Original) Family Picture from the Director of "Alvin and the Chipmunks"

"Hop" (2011) is a family picture strongly reminiscent of a 2007 film "Alvin and the Chipmunks" - a comedy seamlessly merging live-action actors and animation characters. Both pictures are harmless and mindless fun (helmed by the same director Tim Hill, incidentally), kind of movie that would achieve 100 million dollars mark in ticket sales while ridiculed by critics. Actually, "Hop" is not that bad, thanks to the state-of-the-art special effects, though you really have to ignore the incredible storyline.A young rabbit E.B. wants to be a drummer, but his daddy Mr. Bunny - who happens to be the Easter Bunny - would not listen. So, to make his dream come true, E.B. runs away from his home on Easter Island, and travels to Hollywood, where he encounters Fred O'Hare (James Marsden), a slacker who discovers his true calling when he discovers the identity of the speaking rabbit. Well, I think you know what it is.Obviously there are so many wrong things about the film. The story is far from coherent. James Marsden (born in 1973) is too old for the role. The film also feels like déjà vu at times. Mr. Bunny's factory, though beautifully designed, reminds us of a recent Tim Burton film, or the idea of hundreds of working chickens seems to have come from "Despicable Me" and its yellow-colored minions. Cameos of Blind Boys of Alabama, David Hasselhoff and Hugh Hefner (voice only) are amusing, but may look pointless considering the film' main target audience. For all these, however, I enjoyed watching the film with its great effects, colorful designs and some funny jokes. Maybe this is not an instant classic, but is still an entertaining family picture.

Awesome Cute Rabbit movie…..But the last 36 minutes… -__-

I first heard of this film on a bookmark. LOL I know, I saw E.B. on abookmark and I'm like, WTF? And it was a new movie called "Hop". I waslike…MKAY… And I never Actually saw it. It wasn't until, NOW I Foundout what it was. The DVD/Blu ray/ Special Edition in 3D with all 3discs combined together, Yadda yadda etc., That I gained interest init. I watched the trailer, and instantly fell in love with it. I got22$ the previous day, so I knew I could afford it. After a pain in theass trip to the doctor's My mom drove me to best buy to buy this. Cameback home, and watched it. Here's what I think of it.NEGATIVES: EVERYTHING…WAS PERFECT… but as soon as the Movie hit the 1hour mark, the director was like… You know what? Let's turn this into acliché evil villain, Christmas (sort of) knock off. And the very last30 seconds was so cheesy that I felt like throwing up cheese blocks. Positive: One of the cutest movies I've seen. (but not in a, Dora TheExplorer Cute, but a…..RABBIT CUTE….What?) Animation is Very nice.Story is great, Takes a whole different meaning on the Easter holiday.Carlos is awesome… EXPECT FOR THE LAST 36 Minutes. Got a stronginterest in drumming after watching this.Overall, It's a great movie. (FAR Better then Alvin and the crapmunks)just….The freaking last 36 minutes…..*Sigh*....8/10.

Terry Staunton 2012-05-15 06:17:48

Hill mines the same seam of cuteness as in his earlier Alvin and the Chipmunks, with Brand's manic characterisation helping to paper over the cracks of a flimsy story.
