This review is from: Home Alone (DVD) my mom loved it, completely satisfied with the services rendered. would shop again, the movie itself is great for little kids and old ladies
I haven't watched this film in years, and was slightly doubtful as to whether would love it as I did when I was younger. But I loved it! I found myself laughing along with all the familiar scenes - the bad guys, Kevin's mum realising she's left her son at home, and the scene where Kevin splashes on aftershave I will never tire of! I think this movie is one of a kind, and I don't think the other THREE can match up to the original. I watched the trailer for Home Alone 3, and although were some funny moments, I guess a lot of trailers will show the best moments. And the new kid just doesn't have the same innocence and cheekiness as Macaulay Culkin. It's weird watching him so young, when you see him now, just released his "comeback" movie - he's only 23 and has been married & separated (not divorced). He still looks the same, and this film was definitely a joy to watch again.
Kevin Macalister (McCauley Culkin) is left home alone after his familygo on Vacation and forget about him. At first he likes the dailyroutine but then he is scared when he finds out that 2 Robbers, HarryLime (Joe Pesci) and Marv Merchant (Daniel Stern) want to rob Kevin'shouse. Kevin makes a plan to save his house and himself. Kevin's trickswork and Harry and Marv end up in jail. I really enjoyed this film andI think it should have won millions of awards. It was nice to see JoePesci and Daniel Stern working together and I thought they werehilarious. Everything was fantastic, the acting, the scenery, and thewhole storyline. It is one of the hilarious films i've ever seen.
Roger Ebert gave "Home Alone" a mere 2-1/2 stars, which is the samerating he gave "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," another one of mychildhood favorites. (For comparison, he gave that same rating tomediocre movies like "Six Days, Seven Nights" and "Superman III.") Thereasoning he gave for giving "Home Alone" that rating was that he likedthe first half of the movie, but then didn't like the burglar/boobytraps plot in the second half. At first, I was going to say that RogerEbert has simply lost touch with his inner child, but I'm going to givehim the benefit of the doubt.I watched "Home Alone" today after many years and I still loved it andI still laughed, even though I had practically memorized the movie as akid and still remembered it all. As a kid, I remember always wanting toget to the "cool" stuff when watching this movie, the parts aboutpulling pranks on the pizza man or booby-trapping the house. I'dfast-forward through much of the first half (even though I liked it). This time around, I had a new-found appreciation for the beginninghalf, where we get to see how an 8-year-old copes with waking up anddiscovering that his family has disappeared. I still LOVE the secondhalf of the movie, but I saw the first half in a new light this time.I think the reason why that happened is the same reason why Roger Ebertdidn't like the second half of the movie. As an adult, one watchesfamily movies to remember what it was like to be a kid, to remember thedreams of being grown-up and independent and the silly little fears ofthings in the basement. That's what the first half of the movie offersand it works for both kids and adults; kids relate to it and adultsreminisce about it.The second half is for the kids (and for the inner child). Sure, it'spretty outrageous to see an 8-year-old devise clever booby-traps thatwork like clockwork and are encountered in precisely the right order.Ebert says that our little hero gets too smart and doesn't have thebudget for his fancy booby-trapping. Maybe, but that's not the point.Adults watch and say, "Man, this can never happen." But kids say, "Man!I wish I could do that!" It is, after all, one reason why we go to themovies: to see things that can only happen in the movies. As a kid, words could not describe how awesome it was to see an 8-year-old takeon two adult burglars and pummel them (especially after one of theburglars had the nerve to say, "Kids are stupid"). It is a child'sfantasy come true. That is why this movie was so popular when it came out, why it stayed#1 at the box office for 12 straight weeks. It's also why every familymovie from the 1990's tried (and failed) to imitate it. Kids love itbecause it's a dream come true and parents love it because it's a dreamremembered.(By the way, parents, I should warn you that kids will want to try andimitate our little hero and, unless you want your house booby-trapped,I'd advise that you let them know not to do that. Also, there's onescene where our hero celebrates his new-found freedom by watching agangster movie, where he sees one gangster blow another one away with atommy gun, a scene that scares him and makes him remember his mom.Older kids and adults will laugh at the scene (because it's way overthe top), but little kids may actually get scared. Just a caution.)Macauly Culkin is great as our hero, Kevin. He was a pretty talentedchild star and it's too bad his career never really went anywhere. Ourtwo burglars are Daniel Stern and Joe Pesci, who are the Pinky and TheBrain of breaking and entering. I think Stern's character, Marv, wassupposed to be the funnier one, but I personally liked Pesci'scharacter, Harry, more. One thing I love is the way he's mutteringnonsense under his breath every time he gets caught in a booby-trap,since he can't curse in a family movie. (Actually, true story, he hadto do that because he had just finished filming his Oscar-winning andtotally awesome role in "Goodfellas" as a foul-mouthed, quick-tempered,homicidal maniac of a gangster and so he was quite prone to cursing.)What can I say? I LOVE this movie! It makes me a kid again.
I think most of this movie is mediocre at best. It's contrived, formulaic, poorly written and acted. But, the half-hour of slapstick when the burglars are trying to break into the home is SO hilarious, it's worth sitting through the other parts. It's really a hilarious half hour. So, that's a mixed review!
I think that this movie is the greatist. I watch it all of the time. It is so funny. Well keep up the great work. Love, Sarah Miller
First, this movie is one my favorite christmas movies and definatley in my top 50.It is about a boy named Kevin(Culkin). His family was in a rush to get to their airplane so they forget him home while he is sleeping.Meanwhile,2 robbers(Pesci, and Stern)who call themselves the wet bandits try to rob the house Kevin is in.
Home Alone is a nostalgic film for me, having watched it religiouslywhen I was a young kid growing up. Roger Ebert gave this film a 2.5 outof 4. He calls the film unrealistic and says that it goes in anotherdirection from the original premise.Home Alone plays on the scary scenario every kid fears at some point intheir life. Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is forgotten at home inChicago when his family rushes off to the airport for their trip toParis. Soon after, Kevin is visited by home invaders Marv (DanielStern) and Harry (Joe Pesci) and it's up to him to stop them.Ebert complains that this film deviates from the main premise andsimply brings in stunt doubles and fills the film with wacky traps thatwould otherwise cost the McCallister's tens of thousands of dollars toaccomplish what Kevin does. While this is not far from the true, you'resupposed to suspend some disbelief when watching this.I enjoy Home Alone because an 8-year old handles two grown up burglars.I don't enjoy watching people getting hurt, but I think in this case, there is an exception. The moral of the story is that even when you'reyoung, you can still be responsible and handle your home from beinginvaded. It shows that it's wrong to rob people and that even childrencan be heroes. However, I find that the sequel is much better than this and it's dueto the far superior story setup. Kevin being left home alone was agreat initial start and opening up to the opportunity of a follow upstory. To review this film without the mention of Macaulay's acting is acrime. Macaulay portrays Kevin with amazing talent and it's great forthe simple fact that the 90s weren't really big for their child actorsas far as I can remember. Macaulay is able to hit all ends of theacting spectrum showing being scared, showing emotion, and showingconfidence and hilarious comedic relief, too. He was a great actor andI was sad to only see a few of his films before he retired.Another great point about Home Alone being a cult classic is themusical score provided by legendary John Williams. He gives the filmthe final emotional touch that allows us to forever remember Home Aloneas being a classic film and never forget Macaulay's performance.Somewhere in My Memory has always been a favourite track of mine byWilliams and it's just a great piece of music on top of a great film. This film is a classic for me, and I would never say that this isn't awonderful film, despite being a tad bit unrealistic. But, the fact is,most films exaggerate and force you to suspend disbelief. Don't allowfor this film not to be a favourite because you don't think this sortof thing could happen.
I never bought into the Culkin hype. Here, he is cute, but not a good actor. His line readings are flat, and I sometimes had a hard time understanding what he was saying. The movie's much ballyhooed violence is indeed extreme. The Three Stooges did the same kind of thing with finesse, just funny slapstick that did not leave a mark and you knew was done in jest. Here, Pesci and Stern go through so much I felt myself getting numbed to the consequences. This is just Hollywood fodder wrapped up for the masses; the kind of movie you can turn your brain off and the VCR on. The best scenes here were the ones involving O'Hara and Candy; Rest In Peace, John.
8-year-old Kevin McAllister is accidentally left behind when his family takes off for a vacation in France over the holiday season. Once he realizes they've left him home by himself, Kevin learns to fend for himself, and eventually has to protect his house against bumbling burglars Harry and Marv, who are planning to rob every house in Kevin's suburban Chicago neighborhood. Kevin's mother Kate is frantic when she realizes that she and the family have unintentionally left Kevin behind in Chicago, and she tries to make it back to Chicago as fast as she can, getting help from a polka band leader named Gus Polinski. This movie touches your hearts, and tickles your funny bones. It's just terrific and I guarantee nothing but great laughs for you and the whole family.
If Christopher Columbus discovered America, then Chris Columbus rediscovered American comedy. From "Mrs. Doubtfire" to "Nine Months", he has directed some of the finest contemporary comedies of the 1990s'. But no matter what Columbus does, his crowning achievement will always be 1990's "Home Alone". Between Columbus's skillful directing and John Hughes' brilliant script, this film represents what American comedy should be.The plot of the film is quite simple yet somewhat unrealistic, which is where the movie's impeccable charm lies. Eight - year - old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin before he met Michael Jackson) is the black sheep of his loose Chicago family. His parents (Catherine O'Hara and John Heard) treat him like a child, while the rest of his family - including smarmy Uncle Frank, older brother Buzz and the bedwetting Fuller (brother Kieran) - treats him like trash. After getting into a huge fight with them the night before a Christmas vaction to France, Kevin wishes that he doesn't have a family. His mom says she hopes his wish comes true. The next day, the family wakes up late and is in such a rush to get to the airport that they leave Kevin asleep in the attic. Thinking his wish has come true, Kevin lives it up at home. Little does he know, burglars Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) are home alone, too, and taking advantage of it as well. This is a true holiday classic that you can watch any time of year. If you're one of the five people who have never seen this movie, please do so.
I own this video. Even though I've not seen it for quite a while as of this writing, the movie is still frozen solid in the funny catrgory. When I first saw the film, I saw Kevin grow up rather quickly, and he even had grown-up ideas (like when he looks at his brother's Playboy and finds it "disgusting"). He also learns the value of money, and of course, personal hygiene (the most famous scene in the film). Of course, nothing is more daring than his fighting his fear of the furnace, and how he battles the burglars! By the way, I think scientific studies show that Harry and Marv would be severely disabled by now. Anyway, put it away and show it to your kids at Christmas. They'll love it!
This review is from: Home Alone (Family Fun Edition) (DVD) Macaulay Culkin is good in these movies. A funny Movie. Joe Peshi is good too. The tall guy is funny.
This review is from: Home Alone (DVD) The movie was wrapped in factory seal and came quicker than I thought. It was a favorite Christmas gift of my hubby. We watched it and loved it.
This film really is a must for both children and grown-ups! It tellsthe (funny) story of a boy who is left home at Christmas by hisnumerous family. When the house is attacked by robbers, he does hisbest (and succeeds) to keep the house safe and teach the robbers alesson... and in the meantime, he has lots of fun!! Macaulay Culkin isfab as the boy and Joe Pesci plays a magnificent part as one of therobbers. This fun filled film will keep you posted in the couch, laughing with tears. And if you like true comedies, then this isperfect for you. So if you haven't yet seen Home Alone (I & II) you'dbetter get down to business!!! Enjoy!
This review is from: Home Alone (DVD) This is one of the best and classic Christmas movies. I loved it when I was a kid, and now my young children love it too. There is nothing like hearing them belly-laugh at the silly unfortunate events that happen to the bad guys.
John Hughes has really produced some great films throughout the 80'swithout a doubt, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The breakfast Club, Prettyin Pink etc. But in 1990 he really cracked it in Home Alone. Home Alonethe original is without a doubt a must watch film for all audiences. As always Hughes creates a situation for the film that is a crowdpleaser, in this case an 8 year old left home alone at Christmas whilehis mother and family hope to get back home in time for Christmas, meanwhile young Kevin McAllister is left to defend his home against twoidiotic robbers with a house full of surprises. This film is certainly a Christmas film, but it's what Hughes puts intoit that makes it an essential one, the story, structure, the laughs andthe joyful Christmas feeling. This film will make you laugh and maybeeven cry it has it all in this family pleasing Christmas topper!
Home Alone will long be remembered as a seasonal, workable hit comedythat will stand the test of time. The huge hit of 1990 - amazing tothink it is nearly 21 years old - spawned 3 sequels that came nowherenear mastering the original, but John Hughes is in top form here anddelivers a worldwide global hit. It was the movie that made MacaulayCulkin an overnight star, and thankfully for him his cutesy acting ispitched perfectly well. It would be easy to side with Joe Pesci andStern as the bad guys when faced with an obnoxious smart ass kid, butCulkin shows us his vulnerability through the loneliness of being leftat home, and it is this that works well. The humour is decent, theslapstick almost painfully real, this is a good movie with heart thatdeserved the success bestowed upon it at the time.
This Christmas classic is so enjoyable, due to the engagement between Kevin and two superb burglars (ala Pesci and Stern). In my view, these two burglars make it the great comedy that it is. There expressiveness in being duped by the redhead protecting his family home is creative and simply good comedy to enjoy. The neighbor with the shovel is another outstanding character that pops up in key spots in the plotline. Candy is so-so as the polka king. The mother played by O'Hara is authentic too in her concern, and the rest are just support cast in this. The plot is possible due to the setup of the busy family preparing for the trip with all the chaos and Kevin being somewhat of a sore-thumb in all this. The results are a howl! Enjoy watching this periodically over the years. Too my way of thinking, this makes a movie truly great, its ability to have lasting power. This might be one of those that endures the fads and all that make many flicks ok, but would one buy them or rent them or watch them again? Likely not. But this, this one I've did all three, finally purchasing a copy for our own collection.
Home Alone(1990) is a mediocre movie with an uneasy amount of cartoonishviolence. The problem with the film is the characters do things that mostpeople would not normally do. Joe Pesci is wasted in this movie as hegivesthe only interesting performance of the entire movie. One sad thing aboutthis movie is that this may be the only film that Macaulay Culkin will beknown mainly for. Its a fine film for the holidays but not as an overallviewing experience.
