Pretty pointless "comedy"

Betsy (Patricia Arquette) and Peter (Tate Donovan) rob a carnival and go onthe run. To hide out they return to the religious commune where Peter grewup. He hides the money and then promptly dies. To remain in the commune andfind the money Betsy marries Peter's younger brother Ezekiel (JosephGordon-Levitt), leading to "comedy", "adventure" and "love".....What could be better than a comedy set in an Amish-style community starringPatricia Arquette and directed by Spock? Well - quite a lot actually. Theplot is pretty thin and all the "comedy" revolves around the mis-match ofthe boy and his adult wife. This gets very thin very quickly, leaving onlythe "thriller" plot of the dirty FBI agent hunting the money himself (JohnSchuck). Unfortunately the thriller element doesn't workeither.Patricia Arquette is poor in the lead role playing a very unsympatheticcharacter that flicks between two emotions - angry and repentant.Gordon-Levitt is good as Ezekiel and has some of the few funny moments inthe film. However he is hampered by the poor material he has to work with.Support from Donovan and Schuck is as poor as you'd expect.It's not a terrible film but it's just all so lame. There's nothing toreally make you feel strongly either way and to me that's worse than a filmthat's laughably bad. The whole project is pointless.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the only reason this movie works

Do you really think I would be here if I didn't enjoythe movie. Albeit, minimally. The only true charm this movie has is thechrisma of the young Gordon-Levitt. Without him, the movie is a lostcause.

Pointless but Hilarious!!! A GREAT "Saturday afternoon" film

I've seen this film twice and had to get the DVD! It is HILARIOUS! Theactor who plays the young boy who faints every time he gets upset is astitch, Patricia Arquette is perfect, and the supporting cast reallymake you think that they are Hutterites! (I'm not sure whether they areor not, I haven't found any info either way) : If they're actors,they're perfect, though. It's quite simply a superb escapist film asfar as being entertaining goes. It grabs your attention from the firstfive minutes and keeps you through the entire film. The plot, theacting; all GREAT! Don't miss this one - If you see it, you'll want itin some format in your collection. That GOOD!

Amusing comedy about a couple hidden in a religious community

The movie concerns on a thieves pair named Havana and Peter(PatriciaArquette, Tate Donovan) rob a country fair proprietary(RichardRiehle)and fled to only place where no one look for them. Bothdetermine which the best way to avoid detection is to blend with theHutterite community, an Amish-alike society and where Peter was raisedby his parents(Armin Mueller Stahl, Lois Smith). Peter hides his lootin a secret hiding location, but then he soon dies in a car crash. Hislittle boy brother named Ezequiel(Joseph Gordon Lewitt) is called toreplace him and marry to Havana. She has to adjust to the new lifestyle and his feeling for the boy. And end up interwoven a sensitiveundercurrent of caring and she learns how to love all over again.Meanwhile, they're pursued by two agents(John Schuck, Courtney Vance).This is an enjoyable comedy with good feeling, entertaining, agreeablehumor and language is suitable for all. The main issue about this movieis from how she tries to adapt the new life whilst keeping up thepresence of being a good woman . It's enough remarkable in portrayingthe Hutterite way of life sympathetically and the likable relationshipof the juvenile marriage. It's understandable why it was not greatsuccess in the theatre, as it has not spectacular special effects ,isn't a blockbuster , but for the television set , its's just what isrequired. The film takes parts here and there from ¨Witness¨(Peter Weirwith Harrison Ford) and ¨For richer and poorer¨(Bryan Spicer with TimAllen and Kirstie Alley). Colorful cinematography by Bukowski andemotive musical score by Bruce Broughton. The motion picture isprofessionally directed by the famous Leonard Nimoy, Spock . He's agood director of comedy-drama(Good mother, Funny about love, 3 men anda baby), Sci-Fi(Star Trek III and V) and occasionally fortelevision(Deadly games,Night gallery, T.J. Hooker). Rating : Averagebut bemusing.
