"Hitch" is a funny movie driven by its well-defined, empathetic characters.

Will Smith only has one character that he plays in every movie. Youknow him. The cool guy who always has a comeback, even in dangeroussituations. The guy that can be wrong or act stupid and somehow youstill want to be like him. The lead role in this movie was written forthat character and the result is a physically and emotionally funnymovie. The plot of the movie did not take a genius to conjure it out of thinair; everyone knows about date doctors. In that same vein, the movie ispredictable in many ways, the most prominent being foreshadowingthrough the characters' past experiences. But the secret of this movie,of all successful comedies, nay movies, nay fiction in general; areround characters. In case it's been awhile since high school English, let me define around character: it is a well-defined character that changes from thestory's beginning to its end. This character has problems and opinionsand anecdotes like real people. Because of these features, we canidentify with him/her and cheer them on in their quest for whatever. Every main character in "Hitch" fits this description. They also allmanage to be funny in their own ways- Kevin James is the "born loser"who practices great physical comedy and could not dance to save hislife, Eva Mendes is the vivacious gossip columnist with all the rightanswers to all of Hitch's classic lines, and I bet you can guess whatkind of humor Will Smith practices through his character. All of these different types of humor play off of each other well, merging into a movie where the audience will find themselves exchangingglances with their neighbors, nodding their heads in agreement with thedialogue, and laughing out loud on a number of occasions. This movie narrowly escaped the pitfalls that usually coax comediesinto the upsettingly abundant world of drivel. Luckily for us, "Hitch"avoids sexually explicit scenes or suggestive dialogue for the mostpart, which allows us to stay focused on the more important aspects ofcomedy at the beginning and the resolution of the plot at the end.In short, "Hitch" is a movie that is worth your time and money. It isperfect for a Friday night date.

A rare studio product that earns the goodwill it smugly demands.

Disgrace Of A Movie!!!!!

What is wrong with American movies these days? Hollyweird keeps makingmovies that have men acting like women and women acting like men. Theidiotic male director and writer of this movie need to have their headsexamined. The main problem with this film is its extremely feministportrayal of genders which is fused with almost macabre conceptions ofboth sexes, and this disastrous combination is meant to be jocular. In the scenes of the bar, Eva Mendez and her friend are swigging fromthe beer bottles like you may find sailors on an oil tanker doing so ata bar in Reykjavik. Mendez continually touches every girl she seesafter that and dresses provocatively in every scene, yet curses like aguy. She also gets very emotional when she fights with Will Smith while'defending' women from bad guys everywhere. The men are no better in this movie. What we see is a bunch of idiotstrying to do anything they can to obtain a relation. They are concernedwith obtaining lewd favours or unable to speak clearly when face toface with a woman. Normal men in real life do not behave this way. What we see in this movie is a product of culture gone awry. Everythingis flip-flopped. Guys act like girls, girls act like guys. All this isdone while keeping the extreme predilections of the sexes very much apart of the story. Men are shown as soft and stupid but only interestedin licentiousness most of the time, while women are shown as macho andoverbearing but only as a veneer for their emotional insecurities. Some of this movie's ideas would be at the most watchable if theyweren't presented obnoxiously to the audience. However, this movie isnot even watchable, let alone enjoyable!

Smith without a gun - 'bout time!

I can't tell you how refreshed I felt when I first saw the ad for thenew comedy, Hitch. I have long ranted until blue in the face that I wassick of seeing Will Smith with a gun. I, Robot, Bad Boys (I and II),Wild Wild West, Men in Black and Independence Day all were highlysuccessful films (West notwithstanding) that tried to take Smith'scharisma and couple it with a holster. But, Will Smith has always been better than most of his filmographywould suggest and you don't have to look much further than his AcademyAward nominated turn in Ali or his overlooked breakout performance inSix Degrees of Separation to bear witness to the awesome potential ofthis leading man.So maybe sick of never going more than two scenes without shooting analien or a drug smuggler or maybe just looking to reintroduce us to theboy that brought the Fresh Prince of Bel Air to our small screens on aweekly basis back in the early 1990's, Smith has elected to star in hisfirst lead comedy of what is still a young career. The result is Hitch, a movie that doesn't strive to be anything betterthan the ridiculous elements of its premise, but does a good job indelivering the expected goods.Smith plays title character Alex 'Hitch' Hitchens who is a date doctorfor the bumbling idiots like myself who need that bit of encouragement, advice or idea to help woo the women of our dreams. Hitch brings to thetable what seems to be a wealth of knowledge about the opposite sex andhe is all to happy (for a price) to assist in areas of communication, socializing and romancing of the opposite sex.Albert (Kevin James) is one of his prized clients. A large set man thatworks at a financial firm, Albert was the guy we picked on in dodgeballback in Grade 5. He wears a suit with white socks, he can't seem to eatwithout spilling sauce on himself and he is love with a rich clientthat ranks about a nine on the hottie meter. A call to the date doctorwas exactly his necessary prescription. In no time, Albert has stood upto his bosses and made an impression with the quasi-celebrity AllegraCole that was the apple in his eye.But as Albert is basking in the success of his tutelage, Hitch ishaving difficulty in his personal attempts to impress gossip columnistSara (Eva Mendes). Their first three dates resulted in the revelationof Sara's murdering great grandfather, an allergic reaction to foodthat causes Hitch's face to swell and a dinner that ends up in a foodfight. An auspicious start to a relationship if there ever was one.So in the confines of the 2-hour running time, Hitch will continue toaide and assist fellow gents in their pursuit of love without revealinghis successful revenue generating profession to Sara. And in aconclusion that is just a level above a Three's Company episode, Hitchwill become exposed as New York's great relationship sawbones and haveto learn a new bag of tricks in an effort to gain the respect andadmiration of his new love interest. It will come to no surprise that Hitch is predictable. But the charm isthat director, Andy Tennant never tries to raise this film above theobvious. Possibly taking a page from Mel Gibson's What Women Want, themovie plays out like a better than average sitcom with an ending thatalthough seen from a mile away, is enjoyable in its journey. All kudos have to go to the two leads of Smith and James for keeping usinterested in a film of characters that must have spent their wholelives bumping into walls only to discover themselves in their middleage. Where Smith is completely believable in his expelling ofphilosophy and knowledge, James steals the scenes where they aretogether by introducing us to a vulnerable everyday man who gets a shotat the big time.Hitch is a date movie about dating that will without doubt be anotherfeather in the cap for Mr. July (Smith was branded this title thanks tohis 4th of July blockbusters). Coming off of the Oscar nominated SharkTale, Smith has uncocked his magnum and hopefully put it in thenightstand for at least a few films. And for that, I am thankful.

Do NOT see this!

Will Smith has got to be the most overrated actor in Hollywood. WhyAmerica continues to put out to movies that make no sense and are onlymade for non talented actors like Smith to try and charm his way intohouseholds across the country and these producers are letting ithappen! This movie was no where near entertaining and I for one wouldlike to see that more capable movies like "earthquake" are given thejustice than this stinky little piece of garbage! Who needs a man tohelp hook people up? It's just another film like that stupid "JLo" film"The Wedding Planner" and has no business. If people want to see a feelgood movie, watch "Sticky Fingers" starring the divine Helen Slater. That will make you laugh! Boot this one off the Island!

Will Smith Shines

Displaying that he can handle the lead role in a romantic comedy just as easily as he can handle every other genre in the field, Will Smith shines in HITCH as Alex Hitchens, aka "The Date Doctor." Hitch helps average guys gain the attention and win the hearts of the women of their dreams. He has a strict code that he follows and his identity has remained a secret.Hitch is hired by a tax accountant named Albert (Kevin James). Albert is an overweight, average-Joe who happens to work at a firm that handles starlet Allegra Cole's (Amber Valleta) accounts. Allegra Cole is a celebrity and has all the money, fame, power, and beauty that comes with her station. Albert falls deeply in love with Ms. Cole and needs help getting her attention. This is a romantic comedy, so even the most improbable scenarios become likely and soon Albert finds himself dating the famous Allegra Cole.Meanwhile, Hitch has some problems of his own. He's fallen for a national gossip columnist, Sara (Eva Mendes) who is trying to figure out who the unknown man Allegra Cole has been seen with really is. Hitch is a true genius at setting up scenarios for his clients, but all of the tricks he uses to help his clients have the opposite effect when he uses them with Sara. For example, A romantic trip to Ellis Island turns Sara into a raging and crying fury of hatred and a night at a make-your-own seafood place has Hitch breaking out in a serious facial reaction. As Hitch and Sara bond with each other, their relationship becomes increasingly rocky when a spurned client turns on Hitch and Sara learns what he really does for a living. The poster and DVD cover for HITCH say that "Will Smith is `Hitch'". There's no better way to explain it because Smith is Hitch. Every gesture, move, and spoken phrase seems perfect. Hitch is a role that Smith was born to play. But Smith doesn't shine alone in the film. Eva Mendes is a beautiful woman, but she's also incredibly talented. She holds her own against one of Hollywood's most powerful actors. From various interviews she has given, Mendes seems like a down-to-Earth person. That reality grounds Sara and radiates through her and makes her someone that the audience cares for. Kevin James does an excellent job as the film's pivotal-plot character Albert and in many scenes upstages Smith.I tend to like most genres of movies as long as there is a good story involved. However, romantic comedies are my least favorite film genre. Many romantic comedies made are trite and have no originality to them. HITCH really isn't like that. The movie has a good story, great actors, and solid direction. It's both funny and tender. Unlike many movies in he genre, HITCH is a movie that a person can enjoy watching by themselves just as much as watching it with a loved one.Recommended for fans of romantic comedies, fans of Will Smith, fans of Eva Mendes, and fans of Kevin James. For movie trivia fans, the fire station shown at the beginning of the movie as Hitch is helping a client is the same firehouse used in GHOSTBUSTERS.

The Chemistry is the reason................

why this is a great film. For starters Will Smith and Kevin James III have a great rapport, and their scenes sizzle. I can imagine that they improvised a lot of their scenes. Will Smith and Eva Mendes look like they are in love, and both produce great performances. Anytime I feel low I put this on, and it always produces a smile, and a lot of laughs. Great Film.

Really enjoyed it

I really only saw 3 movies that were made in 2005 and all 3 were very good I thought. The others I watched were the 40 Year Old Virgin and also The Wedding Crashers. I liked this movie because Will Smith did a very good job against. He plays a dude who was once a huge looser and then becomes Mr. Hip and gives men tips on how to pick up women as relationships and not just sex.He goes to talk to a guy Kevin James who wants a women who is a smart heiress that is a tributary for the company that he works for. He is a really big dork and Will gets him hooked up. Meanwhile Will falls for a girl that is a newspaper worker. He is not Mr.Smooth he fails on a date with her at Ellis Island and also at a cookout. She finds out that he sets up men with women and thinks it is just about sex but it is not that at all.So Will gets her back by being a huge moron instead of smooth.

Kevin James looks like he could be the next big thing...

Hitch is one of these movies that goes for the heart and is quite successful for the most part except where a few scenes towards the end overrun it a bit. Not watching the Hitch trailer is a big advantage as many of the best moments are in that 30 second burst. The introduction of Kevin James as Albert marks a new comedy actor on the rise and we can be sure to see plenty more of him... in fact Will Smith might be undercutting himself (after the summer blockbuster "I, Robot") by becoming the sidekick instead of the leading man in a number of scenes, we still shouldn't be blaming his agent, as this is the kind of comedy we want. The story revolves around Hitch, a sort of matchmaking cupid professional who specializes in the build-up and execution of that `one kiss shot' because `8/10 women believe that the first kiss tells them everything they need to know'. Upper-class fashion slave acolytes and executive board members make up Hitch's main customers and so we are definitely on `Sex in the City' ground that has taken a few lessons from old movies with the same sort of theme. This `Love Doctor' comedy is easily one of the better pleasantry surprises you will see in 2005.

Best romantic comedy for years

Well, if you watch a movie, what do you expect? What do you want? Whatmakes a good movie a good movie? Well, I tell some of my thoughts aboutit: It like stories that make you laugh and smile and eat popcorn, butin addition give you the chance to think and philosophy if you like todo so. Story plots with several layers for different moods anddifferent people. I am into good actors, well actually everybody is andeverybody might have a different opinion about who is a good actor andwhat makes a good actor. For me Will Smith is one of the best. And ifyou still think the Fresh Prince will ever stay the Frech Prince, thismovie should change your view! And another chance for a change ofviewpoint is, when the IPS driver Kevin James mutates to the clumsy taxadviser in love.Well, Hitch is the Healing for everybody out there who thought aromantic comedy is infested with Bridget Jones or H. Grant by force. It's the fresh and joyful proof that a romantic comedy can can be avery good movie indeed. Actually it's Hollywood. Actually it's a happyend but it's definitely the best romantic comedy for years, a fancystory, a bunch of very nice gags and tricks and in my personal view aguaranty for real good cinema evening. Enjoy it

Customer Satisfaction

mcfly-31 2012-05-05 11:50:33

clever, but there's a "hitch"....

After a razor-sharp, if a bit unbelievable, opening sequence, thissettles into a slightly humorous tale of a dating specialist. If youhave the patience to wait five minutes between laughs, then you may beall for it. But there was something just a little too breezy about thewhole thing, that I just didn't fall in love with it. At first you think Smith is pulling a "Ferris Bueller" by addressingthe camera. But this is suddenly dropped and only referred to again inthe final shot. But Smith is given some insightful material on dating, men and women, and the tricks used to acquire such. Some on-target,like a guy offering to buy a tired female jogger an ice-cream. Orimplausible, with the opening nonsense involving a dog in a bag(??) anda faked accident. They then set up the James/Smith partnership, which I was surprised wasnot the core of the film. Because it's Will Smith, I guess the makersfelt necessary to give him a romantic sub-plot as well. The James bits, though a bit ham-handed and too reliant on slapstick, had a certaincharm because he and Smith click on screen. But the woman James ischasing---a dead ringer for Cameron Diaz---doesn't evoke that"dreamgirl" quality that an audience would root for. Later it's time to delve into the Mendes/Smith courtship, which is moresluggish. Mendes, an oddly faced actress (sometimes she's cute, sometimes she looks like a guy), is one of those spit-fires who seemslike it'll take a crowbar and some dynamite to get into her heart(punctuated by an incredibly forced "meet cute" in a bar, laden withannoying third-person chat).Which leads to another problem with Smith's elaborate dates. Yeah, itwould be nice if we all had thousands of dollars to go jet-skiingaround the East River, or have a private tour of Ellis Island. Anddon't get me started on the "everybody forgives everybody" happyending. Plus movie-junk where everyone is connected in some way oranother. He knows her, but she finds out it's him, and he didn't knowshe talked to that guy...ugh. Or the fact that Smith is outed as "TheDate Doctor" and it turns into tabloid fodder all over Manhattan. Likeanyone would care there's a misinterpreted player out there trying tocoach guys on how to score with women. Snore. But if you're a viewer who can disregard that and suspend disbelief, you'll at least laugh here and there over the course of the runningtime.

Reminded me of a Shakespearean Comedy

Now I know some people are going to read this summary title and say,"How dare you dishonor Shakespeare by comparing his works to thismovie?!" But let's not forget he wrote for his fellow man in his time.Besides, I'm talking more about the structure than anything else:everyone pretty much has money and it's not an issue, the biggestproblems in these people's lives are finding love, there's a lot ofassuming, miscommunication and misunderstanding, there are longpassages of dialog much like the Bard's plays (i.e. when the 2 are onthe couch and talking about feelings/history), there's the cocky mainhero, an eager but awkward assistant/friend, a shrewish smart woman whois hard to get, a dumb friend, the woman all people want but only thepure of heart can get, not to mention one bad guy who is more of a jerkthan a villain, but despite confusion, everyone ends up happy in theend and getting married (which we know in real life that marriageusually doesn't equal happiness but in love comedies it does), there'seven a big dance party at the end. Phew! - sounds like Taming of theShrew, Much Ado About Nothing, Love's Labour's Lost, etc. to me.I guess my point in saying all this is that the movie hits universalchords since both sexes have struggles with love and while this isclearly from a man's point of view, it is humorous and has sometouching moments too. Will Smith works really well here as always with his charm. Even his"Smith-isms" (aka really stupid "cool" lines he always has in everymovie) only are limited and are toned down such as when he twists thejerk's arm. Kevin James is really likable and hilarious as an awkwardman, and has a big career ahead of him. The only person who was awfulwas Eva Mendes - she just cannot act. All my friends pretty much agreedthat she's there to be looked at for her beauty instead of talent (notthat I'm complaining).I liked the fact nothing was made of interracial marriage - whichwasn't planned but due to scheduling/budget conflicts with a knownblack actress they went with Eva and it worked to the film's advantage.A great date movie most men and women will enjoy.7/10 Not a classic but good for a date

Hitcch

Although I absolutely loved the movie, the quality left me disappointed. The audio and video was slightly off during the first part of the movie. It reminded me of the Japanese movies of the 60's where the actor's mouths did not match the audio portion. I did not return it because it wasn't worth the hassle of returning it.

kosmasp 2012-05-03 18:40:02

Subplot

The main plot evolves around Will Smith and Eva Mendes, but the subplotis where the money is. And it's the only reason that makes the runningtime look reasonable. The subplot of course involving the "King ofQueens" actor (Kevin James). His scenes are by far the funniest in themovie! Although you might've seen most of them in the trailer, so they won'tseem that funny, when you watch them in the movie. If you're a suckerfor romantic comedies or a big Kevin James fan though, you won't mindthe running time or the fact that most of the best jokes are in thetrailer.

Robert Roten 2012-05-02 23:46:08

Only has one thing going for it and that's Will Smith, but that's enough.

2012-04-29 16:20:19

"And then the q-tip...and then you throw it away..."

Before you even see "Hitch", it's tempting to write the movie off as harmless fluff-a Will Smith star vehicle at best. Just look at the cheesy Hollywood styling of the poster: Smith leaning on the word "Hitch" with an I'm-so-smooth grin, daring your expectations to be anything above waist-level. Will Smith as the Date Doctor, selling his charm to nobodies-makes you want to rent Meet the Fockers again, doesn't it? Fact is, "Hitch" does exactly what 90 percent of romantic comedies fail to do: sell you on its charm. The writing abounds with cleverness and laugh-out-loud moments. Urbane matchmaker Hitch has truer things to say about women and dating than Mel Gibson could learn through telepathy in "What Women Want." Finally, Smith gets a role where his mastery of gesture matches smart dialog line for line. And true to Hitch's belief in non-verbal communication, the movie boasts some great physical comedy. Once you've seen nebbish accountant Albert cut loose on the dance floor, you'll know what I mean. Dare yourself to give this movie a chance. It's hilarious and true, the best Hollywood surprise to come along in years.

2012-04-29 08:00:30

nice romance comedy..but cheesy metaphoric ending

This movie was great and had some great messages to send BUT the ending was horrible. It was nice to see Albert and Allegra get back together, but the ending with Hitch going to her apartment was cheesy and bland. It was rid with cheesy metaphors and bland, non-creative dialogue. Its an allright movie to add to your romantic comedy collection.

Jeff Vice 2012-04-26 00:06:47

In the end, the two halves of the movie feel as if they are forced together, leaving messes that Tennant and screenwriter Kevin Bisch never really clean up.

Gene Seymour 2012-04-25 05:25:25

The sour subplot, in which Sara's dark side mistakes Hitch for a cad, staggers to a gummy resolution, throwing a wet-blanket reminder that romantic comedy -- indeed, romance itself -- isn't what it used to be.
