Jack is caught with the wife of his employer, a Vegas thug. The thug sends goons after Jack, who convinces his best friend, Pilot, to flee with him. Pilot insists that they head for Seattle, but doesnt tell Jack why. The goons learn from Pilots drug source where the youths are headed, and they follow, hell bent on breaking Jacks feet. On the road, Jack and Pilot give a ride to Cassie, a distressed young woman. She and Jack hit it off. They pick up an aging stoner headed to Seattle for Kurt Cobains memorial, and they help a circus sideshow family. Why is Pilot so set on Seattle, will the goons catch Jack, and is there any way the friends competing needs can be resolved?

One of those movies that didn't get enough credit. :-P Definately recommend seeing it! The acting was great and so were the characters styles.
Yes, i totally agree with you mate, i fast fowarded this movie as well, itwas THAT BAD. It did have a promising start, but where was the action? Thefunny's? Not in this movie, the only bit i laughed at, was when jack, ruinedhis lovers fantasy, and she was raving on about "Jack and Jilly, went uptheHilly" and then she got all huffy.Give this a miss.
I've seen the DVD box for Highway sitting on the shelf at my local videostore for ages and I've always passed, opting for something else. One daymy best friend suggested hiring it, and I thought why not, I wasn't goingtohire it any other time. At first glance it looks like your typicalteen-targeted product-placement-riddled road movie. Upon watching it,thereis much more to this film than its average cover art letson.Jared Leto is perfect as the hapless pill-popping "God Of F***" JackHayes, and Jake Gyllenhaal is equally suited to the role of Pilot, his stonerchild-hood pal. Their performances are commendable, as they generate afeeling of genuine camaraderie between each other. John C. McGinley andJeremy Piven both come out of nowhere with excellent performances asover-the-top drug dealers. And Selma Blair almost fades into thebackground; she's not a bad actress but doesn't really do anything to makeher performances stand out. The story isn't five star material, but itdoesn't have to be, and that's where the movie succeeds, it doesn't try totake itself too seriously. Some of the previous reviews for Highway on this site have beenparticularlyscathing, which is fair enough seeing as each person is entitled to theirown opinion, but for people who have yet to see it I suggest giving it achance before pre-forming an opinion. I personally thought it was a fun, fast paced and unpredictable road movie, much better than some other trashreleased in '02 (e.g. the laughably lame "The Tuxedo", the feeble Mummyseries spin-off sword-in-sandal outing "The Scorpion King", and thepretentiously boring "The Hours" to name a few). After reading the previous reviews, one thing is obvious, the reviewerscouldn't connect with the film, and just didn't appreciate it for what itwas...fun and entertaining, which is what a good film is supposed tobe.
Solid performance once again by Jake Gyllenhaal, unfortunately the movie tries way too hard to be hard-hitting and meaningfully deep, and ends up instead coming off as overly pretentious and empty. Everything is set to impress the youth of today with extreme coolness, ecstacy, weed, acid, crime and plenty swearing. ...and don't forget about the alligator-boy!??????? I wish I could. (bad bad bad) Anyone who grew up during this period will find blatant inconsistencies. The movie is, for the majority, set soon before and immediately after the death of Kurt Cobain, yet includes none of Nirvana's music in the soundtrack - it is instead provided by one of the members of the Black Crowes, and is pretty decent. An early 90's Nostalgia / Road trip movie about a couple of Hunter S. Thompson-esque characters which essentially relies on Leto and Gyllenhaal to keep you watching until the end. John C. McGinley gives an 'interesting' performance as Johnny the Fox.I would definately strongly recommend hiring instead of buying this movie, if you feel you just have to see it.
A true movie about true friendship. Many may seem to think that a movieabout two male best friends has something "gay" to it, but the truth isthat there is nothing homosexual about a true brotherly love and carebetween two guys. People should break this prejudice. It isentertaining and fun to watch. It is based on a story about two friends(Leto & Gyllenhaal) that go on a road trip to Seattle for two differentreasons. Leto's character is running away from their Nevada's home townbecause of troubles with his employer's wive, and Gyllenhaal'scharacter wants to visit his high school graduation love interest thatis now living in Seattle. I strongly recommend you this movie. Youwon't regret it.
This is a funny roadtrip movie with drugs, hookers, potheads, and good music. The backdrop of this movie is the death Nirvana's Kurt Kobain. It happens during their roadtrip. Gyllenhall was extremely funny as the druggy pothead type and Leto is funny also. The guy from NBC's Scrub's, John McGinley, almost stole the show. I'll never forget the scene when McGinley and Gyllenhall think they're flying through the cemetary. ... If you like Road Trip movie's, you'll like this one. This movie rocks!
ok so this movie has a really lame intro...it's not really about going tocobain's vigil. and it's not as lame as the other guy said. it's actuallygot some REALLY funny parts. i've seen much worse movies. i'd watch itagain.
This review is from: Highway (DVD) This film was never meant to be a blockbuster or catapult anyone. Actually, it's very forgettable but there are some small themes in the film that have stuck with me, (don't worry, no spoilers) such as settling for something broken, coming to terms with your position in life and how unfair it is, and how things change and you can't plan your future on yesterday's certainties. The acting is good enough and never felt stilted or forced beyond the waist-high emotional tone present in the movie and any parts that felt awkward were probably due to the script. The soundtrack and editing sometimes distracted me with its poor or unexpected pacing. This film is ideal for a young person trying to make a pretty picture out of the pieces from a less-than-perfect life, avoiding responsibility for their actions and clinging to some silly idea of a former interest.
I was waiting for this movie to pick up, but it never did. Boring from thevery first moment. I didn't even pause it when i went to the toilet totakea leak. For the love of God, don't watch it. Go out and play in thesun.
OK, so it ain't precisely Oscar or golden globe material, but I have toadmit this movie was really fun to watch (even though it is supposed tobe drama you can get a really good laugh out of it) specially at thebeginning. if you don't like dirty humor and don't tolerate watchingthe lead of the movie do drugs and have a nice time, then you shouldn'twatch this. What I didn't like much about this movie was the part withalligator boy, it kind of disappointed me, even though it had a niceclosure, still I don't know, they could've worked it better. At theend, I DO recommend this movie to everyone who's stoned, likes nirvana, likes road trips, or is just bored of classic movies where everybodylives happily ever after, =)
I also watched this at like 2 AM. It's one of those movies with goodlooking guy's who have an excitement to them that keeps you watching, Iactually thought the dialog was very original. It also has a generallysatisfying ending which is the most important part in my opinion. Themoviesort of toyed with sexuality issues in a bizzare way, going right up totheline and pulling back. One problem is I missed the beginning of thismovie!Being that I'm gay I thought the two guys were as one character says, "inlove". I've seen some movies where two closet cases dance around theirfeeling for eachother before... or is that my life? Anyway, no doubt thismovie seemed to almost hint at bisexuality. Just never comes right outandsays it.Mysterious movie, but if you are not uptight and can enjoy a good storythenit's well worth you're time.
Highway (2001) Jared Leto, Jake Gyllenhaal, Selma Blair, John C. McGinley,Jeremy Piven, Kimberley Kates, Mark Rolston, Arden Myrin, D: James Cox.Listless, aimless direct-to-video road movie about Las Vegas pool cleanerLeto on the run after he's caught in bed with a mob boss's wife, and setsout on the road to Seattle with his drug-addicted childhood buddyGyllenhaaland later they pick up a sexy hitchhiker (Blair). The story just paintsitself into a corner, and these characters are not interesting and have noappeal. Running Time: 97 minutes and rated R for strong sexuality, drugcontent, violence, and language. * ½
Although the self-absorbed undergraduates with theirpseudo-intellectual babble will sniff about how "the masses" won't beable to "connect" or "appreciate" this movie, the reasonablyintelligent movie-renter will recognize this film for what it is: apiece of crap. First, it is a road movie that rips off Kerouac andthinks that somehow gives it legitimacy. Second, it invokes KurtCobain, another transparent attempt to pass this off as a Gen X film bylinking it to the over-commercialized and overpraised rock star. Andthird, it is just plain BAD. Inexplicable and pointless flashbacks ofthe two main characters as kids (yeah, we get it, they are buddies) areone problem, but the real weakness is the constant ripoff of Tarantino- an annoying drug dealer who engages in a monologue that exists onlyto waste the viewer's time, thugs who chase the "hero" for screwing agangster's wife, we've all variations of this before. I rented thisbecause of Jake Gyllenhall, a fine actor (go see Brokeback Mountain andDonnie Darko if you don't believe me), but his character exists in adrug-addled haze to Leto's brain-dead pool boy, who isn't high and hasno excuse for his imbecility. Jake must have needed the money (it issupposed to have a $14 million budget, but clearly not in thecinematography department), for this stinker does nothing to enhancehis indie-movie icon status. For a much better movie from 2002 thatshowcases his acting ability, check out "The Good Girl."
Me and my best friend decided to rent this movie Saturday night, neither one of us heard of it before and it looked interesting. We watched it and totally fell in love. It is such a great movie and DAMN...Jared Leto is looking good in that movie. Whooaa!! We got so many laughs out of it and we cried a little bit too. It was such a perfect movie. Its hard to believe that its a B movie cause it is just sooooooooo good. Me and my friends picked up so many things from it like...."Pop Quiz" "Gold Star" "Peace and Chicken boots" "Jack and Jilly went up the Hillie to fetch a pail of water" and "Thats so Gothic". LoL I just loved everything about it...there's not a more perfect movie...Check out Requiem for a Dream...Thats an awsome Jared Leto movie as well.
You know this movie had a great potential, could have been a major filmfor all the characters involved. But somewhere along it fails major.Doesn't really make you 'feel' for any character, they all seem likecardboard characters. Should have breathed life into them. Instead itjust manages to take you 'around' aimlessly. It fails to surprise you,the bad guys remain bad, the good are good, the neutral are neutralnothing changes or happens. Whatever was supposed to happen happens. Sowhat's the point of watching it? Some useless diversions which make nosense, probably a very personal film, fails at all levels. There is theclassic whore with a heart of gold, the drifter, the two friends, butthe chemistry is missing. The electricity just went out. They are allon high, so no lows!
this movie is like fear and loathing in las vegas , tripping out on a road trip to now where. i turn the sound off and put my favorate trance cd in. i it makes me laugh everytime ...thier acting is soo goofy....my favorite movie to watch to music.
Considering that I love movies like Kids, Drugstore Cowboy, Bully, Igbygoesdown, and other rebellious movies, I thought this movie was soooo good. Iloved it. Jake Gyllenhal or however his name is spelled. He is so gorgeousand fit the role perfectly. Jared Leto is excellent, and he is really hotto. Selma Blair is so cute and she did a very nice job. She has gottentokiss the hottest guys, ugh. This movie wouldnt be like Oscar materiallike"The Hours", but it was entertaining and funny and interesting to watchandI really liked it.
I watched this movie with very low expectations, but I was very surprised. It was terrifically acted by all of the three leads (Jared Leto, Jake Gyllenhaal, Selma Blair), and they made all of the characters likable even though no one of them were honorable people. The performances save this movie from a weak plot. And while this movie is definitely not for everyone, I reccomend it to people who want to see a movie that is different from every other movie out there.
Maybe it's me, but I really didn't understand this movie at all. For aminute it seemed like a comedy then it crosses over to drama. I got sobored with it that I almost completely forgot what this was about, SelmaBlair(Kill Me Later, Hellboy) was surprisingly bland along w/ Jared Leto andthat dude from "The Day After Tomorrow" - it felt like all the talent wascompletely wasted as well as film time. I couldn't really relate to whatwas going on throughout the movie and the cinematography was prettydry.4/10 - don't like it, not my kind of movie - wouldn't say it was the worstthough
I tell you, the money used to make this film should have gone to charity. Itwouldn't have been WASTED that way. Normally, I will sit through any B movieand chuckle at its badness, but this one had corny acting, stereotypicalcharacters and NO plot whatsoever.I don't know if I'm the only one, but I got a hint that they were trying tomake it as "raw" as Natural Born Killers. Or maybe I'm alone on that one,who knows?Put it this way: If you've never heard of this movie, there's a reason. It'svery, very bad. Some might say its a wild ride, but it's just an excuse toshow a very badly directed sex scene between jared leto and selmablair.
