Mediocre and luke warm.

Like all of this particular author's books, this movie turned out to be the same, mediocre and luke warm like a glass of tap water, hurt your throat but not enough to choke you. I might not want to write a high school like book report to detail what happened in this movie, but I have to admit that not one minute I was committed to this movie during watching. Judd after a long period of diet with vegetables only as her daily food, with two long lines down beside her nose, look dry, drawn, tired and almost no facial flesh to be appreciated as a pretty actress, with Freeman is aging with overweight, this slow motioned movie has turned me off pretty soon.

Jim Caviezel Became Jesus Christ in Mel Gibson's "The Passion of Christ"

I was interested to see this movie because I was very much aware of theactor Jim Caviezel-- but only because he played Jesus Christ in MelGibson's movie "The Passion of Christ" last year. It was great to seehim in a non-religious movie. I was also grateful that though there wasa loving "sex scene" in "High Crimes," it wasn't so bad that I couldn'twatch it as a Christian. (I did think the sequence with the prostituteswas too raunchy.) I have seen Jim Caviezel on Christian TV and noted hesaid in playing Jesus, "I do what I always do when handed a script asfar as studying, etc." Someone involved with Jim said about him thatthey immediately thought of him when casting Jesus because of hisability to portray vulnerability. So in "High Crimes" he made theperfect criminal: affectionate husband to the lawyer (played by Judd)who desperately wanted a child, could weep tenderly on cue and evenpass a lie detector test when he was guilty! Can't wait to see whatother movies he has played in...Ashley Judd always plays a great strong woman, in my view, and thismovie was no exception. But I particularly liked Morgan Freeman's roleas it was was not as "usual" as the other roles. The editing could have been better, especially since the show wasdealing with war scenes from years before Judd's character metCaviezel's character.Flanagan

A little too much faith?

Poor Claire Kubik. One minute out Christmas shopping with her perfecthusband, then, without warning, he's spirited off by military police.Being a curious lawyer, Claire tries to find out what her husband hasbeen arrested for. So far so good. So, without wanting to give too much away, she finds out that her manis actually not actually who she thinks he is. He's been using adifferent name since "leaving" the marines (circumstances of which arenever properly explained), and has seemingly lied about a number ofthings to protect himself. After approximately 30 seconds of disbelief and the odd tear, Clairedecides to stand by her "husband" (who she may not even be legallymarried to, given the whole false name thing).Predictably, she has the odd crisis of confidence at various points inthe film, but 30 seconds later, goes back to standing by her man. Now, whether he's guilty or not of the alleged High Crimes of thefilm's title, Tom Kubik, Ron Chapman, or whatever you want to call himis still guilty of deception (his wife being the victim).I know the director only has around 1 hour 30 minutes for the entiremovie, but I did feel more could be made of Claire's personal strugglewith whether or not to stand by her man (as she did so willingly).Having said all this, I found the rest of the film and the inherentstory to be fairly solid and enjoyable, if a little "thick paperback" -readers of crime/military/thriller novels will know what I mean.Overall, a respectable 6/10. I would have posted a higher score, if notfor the willingness of Ashley Judd's character to defend her husband soreadily. But hey, as I said, the director only had an hour and a halfto pack it all in!

It is a "nice" movie

Despite "critic's" very detailed and erudite review, I don't think I'dcallit a "fine movie".First of all, I hate the conspiracy/government/military cover-up storyline... tired and trite...It was sooooo predictable -- step-by-step from start to finish... even forsomeone like me that really likes to get totally engrossed and forget thatI'm watching a movie. So I'm sure that a more sophisticated movie-goerwould find it even more predictable than I did.In any case... maybe it's a "nice-nice" movie, but I'd wait for it to comeout on PPV.

Best US Army - Laws picture for non-US citizens...

When I choose this movie it was because most of the others I had alreadyseen or were cartoons.Normally something concerning US army and a long lawcase didn't intrest me,mostly with their long, annoying and detailed cases with procedures which Idon't know nor care. I'm Belgian, so USA based things not really my domain. So by going to this one, my acceptations weren't too big, but wow got Iimpressed or what...This movie ain't really a lawcase movie, but a good action thriller basedonone. The intens moments keep you focused all over the story, and Judd andJackson deliver a nice act in this movie, and even the story is superb, whenyou think you have the story, it changes and the end really surprised me.Cool movie of which I enjoyed every minute!

a qualified recommendation

I read the book. If you want to see the book made into a movie, you'll needto wait a while. The setting from the book would have been much moreinteresting. It makes me wonder if they had to suspend filming on the eastcoast for this movie and change the setting to the west coast for securityand 9/11 reasons.Anyway, the movie is good. It's not a blockbuster, but it's a nice film tosee. I enjoyed all the title roles--Morgan, Ashley & Jim. But I wish theywould have included a bit more of the complexity of the case and charactersfrom the book.

not worth the money to see it

I went to go see the movie thinking it would be as good as kiss the girls.Boy was I wrong. Instead of having the movie take 2 hours to see all youhad to do is watch maybe the first 30 minutes and then leave. This moviestries to make you think he didn't kill those people and think he's thisloving man who just wants to be happy and be a family man. In my opinionsave your money and just go rent Kiss the Girls instead. That's muchbetter.

dbdumonteil 2012-05-05 17:21:11

The highest crime is plagiarism.

This movie is a remake in disguise of Costa-Gavras 's "Music Box".AshleyJudd takes on Jessica Lange's part.In the eighties work,Lange was defendingher father ,accused of high crimes during WW2 .Take San Salvador and thehubby instead and the job is done.Besides, both ending are almost thesame,"high crimes" being more nervous and more "moral" so to speak.Freemaninvestigates in San Salvador as Lange did in Hungary,to come to the samefinal conclusion.Needless to say,Judd's brilliant brave attorney andFreeman's alcoholic character have been seen by the average viewer athousand times or more.

Good scenario but could have been better with other actors and places

I think with this kind of usual story you need very good actors to make agood film. The scenario is good, rational, nothing not believable and thetiming is very good. The director could have given more tension, more suspense. Jim Caviezel'scharacter should have been more complex and Ashley is a bit better but notvery credible. Morgan Freeman is there and keep everything over thewater.

Jon Monsarrat review: moving, but plot holes

I'm an action movie guy, so "High Crimes" is right up my alley. And Ienjoyed "Kiss the Girls" (although not Nurse Betty). In fact, I did enjoy High Crimes, which is a standard Hollywoodsuspense / crime flick. It was only afterwards that I realized that itwas all smoke and mirrors. The scary music and choreography succeededin setting up a suspenseful, moderately engaging film that I would callsolid, nothing special. But after leaving the theater, I was surprised to get caught out.Usually I am quick-witted enough to notice. "High Crimes" contains somethrow-away characters, is a little too clever for its own good with theplot twists, and some loose ends dangle at the end, which I did notfind satisfying. The acting is OK and it's hard to make Ashley Judd look bad, even whenher on-screen character has some bruises.Who should see this film:-- Action / suspense movie buffs who have nothing better todo on a rainy day, and who aren't expecting the well-plottedand original Kiss the Girls.-- I can't think of anyone else.I'll give High Crimes a 6 out of 10.

Fine movie!

I liked this movie pretty much. I didn't expect much when I started towatchit, so I was pretty surprised in a good way. I would recommend this movietoanyone who likes law based movies. It tells you all about the corruptioninboth military and law. Ashley Judd performed well in thisone.

not bad...

But not that great either. I could pretty much see what was going on, butIwas a little tired of the shock in the film. I get a little tired of ithappening all throughout the movie, especially when you are really tryingtopay attention more to the story than anything else, however, I did like theperformances by Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman who were in Kiss The Girls awhile back. Also Amanda Peet was very good for the short role she had. Inany event, don't pay full price for this one, I give it a 5 out of10.

An Almost Great Movie

It started out with good acting and an interesting storyline. Apart from some language and hooker content, it was a pretty decent movie. Unfortunately, for the final 15 minutes, the writer apparently forgot how to make the movie consistent and the denouement is incoherent to the rest of the movie. It could have been a great film overall if they had ended earlier.

A Thrilling Mystery

"High Crimes" has so many twists and turns its like a road out of hell. However, the twists are carried out in a marvelous if not predictable way.The film is about Claire Kubik(Judd) whose husband is being accused of murder. With the help of Charles Grimes (Freeman),Lt.Embry, and her sister Jackie (the lovely Amanda Peet),she discovers a conspiracy inside the milatary. The plot twists are just like "The Recruit" in a way, except this movie was made first.Plot twists such as assasination attempts and ones such as one of the characters might be a mole are carried out ni a way that give you tunnel vision while watching the movie and making you not want to take your eyes off the screen. Why 4 stars then?,some, okay most of the plot is pretty much predictable, but this a must see movie for mystery fans.B- for the movie,B for the acting.Enjoy!!!

Judd and Freeman won`t Let You Down

In High Crimes Ashley Judd plays an attorney forced to defend her husband. He's charged with murder in a past life she didn't even know about To help her Claire hires a grubby, disgruntled ex-marine lawyer named Charlie Grimes (Morgan Freeman), who's eager to take on the military brass that disgraced him years before.even the The plot was predictable but Ashley Judd and Morgan Freeman make this film work and Jim Caviezel is great in this film If you've been searching for a good suspense-thriller kept you guessing right up till the end pick this movie .The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround, which intensifies suspenseful scenes. Several Special Features are also included on this DVD: audio commentary with Director Carl Franklin, six featurettes and the original theatrical trailer

Fast Paced And Well Acted

"High Crimes" is based on a book of the same name by Joseph Finder, and is so frequently the case, the book is better than the movie. Which isn't to say that this is a bad movie; in fact, it is a very good one. In today's world, fascinated with trials and the legal system, the emphasis on courtroom events is to be expected, but as a retired lawyer with 30 years in the Courts, I find this aspect a bit ho-hum. But the underlying plot of a military atrocity being possibly covered up by the court martial of a scapegoat NCO is effectively rendered here. Ashley Judd, who I view as a B- level actress does a commendable job as the lawyer wife of the accused ex-soldier. Morgan Freeman, who I rank as an A- actor, and a favorite of mine, is excellent as the alchoholic ex-military lawyer who tries to help defend the accused, played very well by Jim Caviezel. It is a fast paced flic with a surprise twist ending that is a good effort and an enjoyable movie.

I hate, hate, hate this movie.

Maybe I'm a little bit biased--I come from a military family--but I found this movie to be horribly disrespectful to the Armed Services. SPOILERSThe fact that Marines go around giving women miscarrages in this movie isn't suspensful or thought-provoking; it's stupid. It's not often that something can offend me, but this movie actively pisses me off.The plot is full of holes; nothing makes a shred of sense. The fact that a civilian lawyer is at a court martial wouldn't happen. As I said before, Marines not only give women miscarriages, they're portrayed as jackals that ENJOY doing it. And the ending? The ending is weak, stupid, and seems hashed together.Don't see this movie. You'll be a much better person for it.

another one of them Ashley Judd thrillers

Ashley Judd's (Normal Life, The Locusts) husband, played by Jim Caviezel (The Passion Of The Christ, Frequency) gets arrested and put on the guilty bench for a slaughter in El Salvador a bunch of years ago. So, Judd hires the always superb Morgan Freeman (Unleashed, Million Dollar Baby) to help her out on the case and to find out the truth while she tries to get her husband out of imprisonment. Judd then has threats on her life after. The opening sequence pulls you in, the thrills are a mixed bag (car crash scene for example was good) and the outcome, well, I really saw coming anyway. Ashley Judd's thrid thriller but its her second one with a murderous manipulative husband(Double Jeopardy). Twisted and Kiss The Girls had a killer running after her or playing games with her noggin. Also starring Bruce Davison (X-Men, Dahmer), Amanda Peet (The Whole Nine Yards, The Whole Ten Yards) and Tom Bower (Die Hard 2)

stensson 2012-04-17 03:31:39

Another one for anyone

Average thriller in every way. Sometimes less than average. Many clues whicharen't followed up. The end surprising, but you have been more surprisedbefore.Ashley Judd goes on routine, but that routine takes her a rather long way.Much energy in Amanda Peet, being a talented comedienne and it's strange sheisn't used much more as a type. Best is perhaps Bruce Davison as the MarineBrigadier, although it probably isn't very difficult playing such parts.Morgan Freeman is doing another Morgan Freeman.
