Happy Gilmore is a failed hockey player with no direction in life. His grandmother is evicted from her house for her failure to pay back taxes, and his girlfriend has left him. He makes it on to the pro golf tour with the hope of making some money to save his grandmothers house, but is challenged by the favorites on the tour (Shooter McGavin). Adam Sandler is rapidly becoming my favourite on-screen comedian. Hehas this knack of doing incredibly stupid films that neverthelessmanage to put a big stupid grin on my face for the whole show. This onehas all the Sandler trademarks: a daft plot, a pervading sense of(mostly) innocent fun, incredibly funny supporting cast, plenty ofcameos, cartoon-like laws of physics, references to his other films (oris that vice-versa in this case?). His characters tend to start outunlikeable (such as Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison), but the viewerends up rooting for them anyway as the film progresses and thecharacter's good side is revealed. There is usually a positive, inclusive feeling to the comedy style: just about all the characters inthe film (even the sleaze-bags) are treated well by Sandler's character(once he gets over his temper tantrums in this case), which puts thesefilms head and shoulders above the derisive, divisive style of humourthat seems so common elsewhere these days. Sandler's characters tend toonly make headway when they are being good, which isn't a bad messagefor the kids in the audience. Yet there's nothing saccharine orDisney-esquire here. While some gags are a bit predictable, there arestill plenty of surprises and some outright lunacy that keep it fresh.Even once you suds out what the Sandler formula is, the films are stillenjoyable to watch. Sheer fun!
Have you(SUBWAY)ever seen a movie(SUBWAY)that beats you over the head(SUBWAY)with it's product placement(SUBWAY) more than this one?(SUBWAY) The director/producer made no attempts to even be subtle(SUBWAY) about it. It was blatantly obvious, forced and jarring(SUBWAY) to the story flow.(SUBWAY) Even worse than the Coneheads(SUBWAY) movie. (SUBWAY)
This is such a good movie you can watch it over and over and not get tiredof it. This movie made Adam Sandler become the ridiculously wealthy personhe is today. It's very funny and there are many stand-out scenes. I think itis so popular because it makes fun of one of the most boring sports ever tobe played - golf.
"Happy Gilmore" is one of the worst excuses for comedy I've seen. Those whoequate it with "Caddyshack" - a truly hilarious golf comedy - should havetheir senses of humor examined. Though there are a few (very few) funnyscenes, Sandler's character is totally unlikeable, the plot is unbelievableand the acting is unnerving. But as long as twenty-something MTV-generation comics talk studios intoletting them make movies, there will apparently be enough fans to throwdownenough money at the theater to make them profitable. Which, alas, leads tomore inane movies like "Happy Gilmore." Sigh.
I am a big fan of Adam Sandler movies and I had not seen this movie until now. This movie is about a guy named Happy Gilmore. Gilmore has not wanted anything his whole life but to be a hockey player. Gilmore can't skate in the ice rink very well which is what always stops him from becoming a professional hockey player. A golf talent notices how far Gilmore can hit a golf ball and gets Gilmore involved in golf. There are some funny scenes in this movie. Some of the humor though is dirty or just not funny. Basically in this movie, Adam Sandler acts like he does in all of following movies like Big Daddy and Mr. Deeds - a guy who is tough, but nice on the inside and always falls in love with a woman. However, as the years go on, Adam Sandler has polished himself and his character has geniunly become more likable with each movie.
While calling a movie Adam Sandler's best may be damning it with faintpraise, this is pretty well-done as dumb comedies go. Sandler is in hiselement as the goofy hockey wannabe trying to raise money by using his450-yard drives to win money on the PGA Tour. Playing off the indignantChristopher McDonald, a pro on a hot streak bothered by the popularity ofthis working-class hero, the comedic timing here works out well, and thereare some good scenes when tempers flare (a notable one with both McDonald ina bar and TV's Bob Barker). The movie will become a lot funnier if you happen to play golf, or evenwatch, it, because the antics of Sandler on the golf course (he plays in aBoston Bruins jersey and putts like he's using a hockey stick) areridiculous enough to be funny. There are some good laughs from variousplaces on the course, and Ben Stiller gets some chuckles as the insane andsadistic orderly at the nursing home Sandler's Grandma is staying in whilehe tries to win back her house. As a final note, you can't hit a golf ball that far like that. I've tried ,my friends have tried, anyone who plays golf and has seen this movie hastried. Everyone just hits a 50-yard worm burner. Standard Sandler fare, but good for a few laughs.
I saw this film a couple of days back expecting some sort of cinematic brilliance in rib tickling comedy.A lot of people claim this is Sandler's best.I was quite disappointed as I expected it to have some sort of originality in concept rather than being so predictable that a preteen can guess what's going to happen next. The movie would've been the same without Stiller but then I realise it's 1996 and Stiller isnt exactly a famous funny guy.I think 50 First Dates was more beautiful a film than funny. It had a message.Similarly, Big Daddy was great because there's no holding back in Sandler's character.Happy Gilmore is an irritating pathetically portrayed character.I'd much rather watch Jim Carrey's Cable Guy for the 10th time rather than watching Happy Gilmore again.I'm sorry this movie just doesnt do it for me.It lacked unpredictablity. The funniest film I have seen till date is Ice Cube's "Friday" I suggest you people watch that.I love the genre and I claim I got a bit of sense of humor going but Gilmore is sadly drowning in its own simplistic (not slapstick) lack of humor.Overall I'd give it 4/10Anyhow ,enjoy what coughs out the laughs.
This is arguably one of the best sports-related movies/comedies ever...Where does one start?Grandma Gilmore and her tolitarian retirement home is way funny...Chubbs is just plain memorable...Bob Barker makes an appearance just as memorable as any year of his hosting The Price is Right...Very good and funny movie
i saw this movie and its my favorite adam sandler did excellent iwill see the movie anytime possible adam and golf really mix
This review is from: Happy Gilmore (Widescreen Special Edition) (DVD) I am satisfied with the quality of the product and the time time it came in.
I watch this movie all the time. With Dumb and Dumber and Kingpin, one of the funniest movies ever. The one-liners are classic, intelligent humor. Adam Sandler's best movie by far. The best part is, it gets funnier every time you watch it. Listen for the hidden humor that you don't catch the first 1-3 times, and you will not be disappointed.
Now I know you make be thinking that they are the only golf comedy'sbut what about Caddyshack 2. Well anyway this is Adam Sandlers golfcomedy classic that shows that Adam Sandler will never die. The movieis about Happy Gilmore, The enraged failed hockey player who needs toraise money to save his grandma from being evicted from her house findshis ability to hit the long ball. The movie is a must watch for fans ofComedy as it is a laugh a minute comedy that Adam Sandler would havehad so much fun in. Overall the movie is a good one and while I can seewhy people do not like it I do and I think other people should at leastsee this film as this is comedy at its finest. I rate this comedy 93%.
Happy Gilmore is one of Adam Sandler's funniest movies. This classic will keep you laughing the entire time. Whether its at Happy's misbehavior, his inability to putt, or the antics of everyone around him, you will stay laughing throughout!! MUST HAVE!!!
One of the best golf movies since Caddyshack, Adam Sandler's follow up film to the very popular Billy Madison. Happy Gilmore about a hockey player turned golfer and how he makes it on the PGA Tour and rises to success, but one man Shooter Magavin tries to brake his success by attempting to sabotage his rain many times, but Happy ends up on top in the end, and there is a whole lot of fun along the way! One of the funniest movies I have ever seen, Happy Gilmore never gets old. A true classic in Sports Comedy's.
Happy's golfing talents are discovered in this action-packed sportscomedy movie that drove into the box-office this week. Ice Hockey"wonnabe" Happy Gilmore introduces his 400 yard golfing talent andbegins to change the way of golf as the IRS re-processes hisgrandmothers home due to not paying taxes. Happy( Adam Sandler) has awell under par golf performance, but a spectacular acting one as hehits the spot every time.As a rejected Ice Hockey player, Happy discovers his golfing talentsand ex-pro Chubbs Peterson (Carl Weathers) helps him progress. Gilmorewith his popular 400 yard drives is aiming for the hole-in-1's to raisethe money required to get his grandmothers house back. Happy's talentand rage creates the media interest that he needs to join the Pro tour.Competing with bitter rival Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) onthe tour, they have their ups and downs to say the least and thepractical jokes keeping coming.Comical moments are throughout this box-office spectacular such as thesoaking of Gilmore on the green at 9pm where he expects to meet theother pros' and his rival Shooter is to blame. Gilmore's anger and ragethreatens his place on the tour which Shooter encourages his beingthrown off. But due to the public interest and viewing figures Gilmorebrings he remains on the tour although the outburst the fight with BobBarker isn't the best moment for Gilmore.Gilmore's anger is a key part to this comical film as several timesthroughout the film he lets himself go as he relieves his anger. Suchas at the mini golf course he decides that the clown that keepslaughing at him when he misses a put would be better without a big rednose. Or the fight on the Pro AM with Bob Barker after they come lastand Bob isn't pleased or the pushing of Happy's caddy but none thewiser Happy believes it's just someone pinching his clubs.Adam Sandler has yet another comical film but this has to be rated ashis best performance yet in a positive acting career. This film is asports comedy which is a must-see although the rating of 12 isappropriate as there are some sexual comical references. Gilmore hasmade this a must-see and the film is well worth a top spot at the boxoffice as Gilmore bring a whole new life on golf.
Adam Sandler is one of the best comedians of the 1990s and it is easy to see why in this totally hillarious entertaining movie. Sandler plays Happy Gilmore, a hockey player at heart who unfortunately can't skate to save his life. Happy then decides to try professional golf because he has an awesome golf swing and also because his poor old grandmother has to move to an old folks home because she owes the IRS $275,000.What follows next is absolutely funny. Happy enters golf tournaments and due to his explosive temper it is truely side splittingly hilarious to see him explode on the golf course. Happy's main rival is Shooter McGavin a truely egotistical, caniving person who tries to get Happy kicked off the tour. The beautiful Julie Bowen portrays Sandler's girlfriend in the movie, and Carl Weathers is Happy's mentor Chubbs Peterson. Ben Stiller has an untitled role in the movie, playing a mean orderly at the old folks home. One of the best scenes in the movie is when Happy gets in a fight with Bob Barker. Whoever wrote this scene is a comedy genious and it makes the movie better. This movie is highly recommended to all fans of Adam Sandler and great comedy in general.
This review is from: Happy Gilmore [HD DVD] (HD DVD) It's to bad HD DVD is gone i have a player and it works well but no more movies so its worthless now.
"Happy Gilmore" reminded me of what great comedy is like. It is AdamSandlers best work. There was hardly a joke in this movie that I didn'tlaugh at. You want to laugh, really laugh, rent this movie.
Adam Sandler is a great actor/comedian. His role in this is as good as The Waterboy. You'll watch this movie laughing all the way.
Golf, who would ever thought it would be funny at all. It is very easyto imagine what was going through the minds of Hollywood studioexecutives when someone said they have got an idea of a comedy whichmainly involves golf. It is a narrow genre, however the last time sucha movie has been made was Caddyshack. However since I have not seen it,Happy Gilmore is still going to be one of my favorite golf comedymovies.PLOT SPOILERS The plot is really simple. This rubbish wanna be icehockey player has this phenonomenal talent for whacking a golf ball formore than 500 yards. He decides to take up golf, only for the fact thathe needs to get money to pay off his grandmother's debts and get herhouse back. He sets the golfing world alight and is seen as a new andunconventional hero of the green. His temperament and his amazingdrives brings in rowdy crowds, which does bring the game to disreputebut the ratings seems to hitting the roof all the time. Everyone seemto like him apart from the current golf champion, Shooter McGavin, whoseems to be jealous from this newcomers popularity. So Shooter decidesto get Happy to play him for the championships. This has to be Adam Sandler's best movie that he made. I thought thatthe Wedding Singer was his best, but that has to be given to thismovie. He is so funny as Happy Gilmore, and I would have to say thatthe greatest scene, is when he starts singing Exile's song. It alwayscracks me up all the time I see that. The rest of the actors were OK,but to be honest this was Sandler's film. However, I would have to sayBen Stiller's cameo deserves another viewing, as he acted as thesadistic nursing home co worker. Julie Bowen does a moderate job as thelove interest, and strangely enough looks like my old biology teacher, which is seriously weird but alluring nonetheless.Anyway I absolutely love this movie, and I have to say that I am aconvert to Adam Sandler. However this does not mean that I just onlylike really stupid movies, but he is a great comic.
