Promising show

I've watched the first two episodes of this show this afternoon. To be honest, I gave it a try because it was Elisha Cuthbert, who Ireally liked since watching 'The girl next door'.After the first couple of minutes I knew this might be a great show. The acting is great, each of the characters has something different andunique, the dialogs are funny and you get great moments of laugh. Ihope this will not change later. Overall, I highly recommend this show if you've watched 'The 70s show'or 'How I Met Your Mother'. I can hardly wait for more episodes.Hopefully this will not get canceled after a few episodes like a lot ofother great shows were (like Firefly or Pushing Daisies.

You had me at Hitler

I've just been turned on to this show and I must say it is fresh andsimple very abusive and fantastic. Smart edgy and keeps you clinchingto the seat of the pants suffocating in laughter. I mean you literallyneed to pause it so you can come up for air. This show creates a supermindgasm of comedy and its extremely addictive. Glad its called HappyEndings because you feel satisfied after watching it. Now shows likethis scare me but I'd like to do it again. Its like taking LSD andgoing on a bike ride. Its like tasting a muffuletta sandwich for thefirst time. Its that moment just before you put on a condom to have sexwith the woman of your dreams. Its being the center piece in a Asianthreesome. Its like hearing your favorite band live on the last day onearth..This show is a seinfeld contender and it could dethrone as longas it continues to make excellent whoopy between peoples ears.

Great show, do not compare it with Friends!

I had my doubts about this show at the beginning. I started watchingsome episode because it aired right after Modern family. But afterwatching a couple of random episodes, I started to get interested. The characters really grew on me, I really recognize my friends and Ithrough them. It's funny, touching at times, well written andintelligent. They make lots of references to movies, TV shows, celebrities, so if you don't watch a lot of movies and television, youmay have some trouble understanding everything. It's refreshing to see a gay character who's not a drama queen, typicaltype of gay guy you see on TV. Adam Pally, who plays the gay character,is awesome and my favorite. It's also so refreshing to see aninterracial couple (black and white), that openly make jokes abouttheir differences. The only thing I don't really like about this show, is Elisha Cuthbert.Although I like her and I think she is so pretty, I don't think sheplays her character well. I feel like she can't find her place with theothers and she doesn't really fit, like she's missing something. A lotof times, I just find her awkward. But that's just my opinion. I'llstill watch the show. Maybe she'll get better with time. So overall, I think it's a super cool show. And please do not comparethis series with Friends, this has nothing to do with it. It's too easyto say they are friends and do stuff together, and compare characters. It's so much more than that. I never really liked Friends and I lovethis show. They can't re-invent the wheel. We all have friends, a lotof them resemble others, it's based on real life that's it. I really recommend everyone to at least watch season 1 :) Then you canjudge by yourself :)

Only good for a rainy afternoon

I have watched happy endings and really it does not gel together. Iwould only watch it again if i had nothing else to watch on a rainySunday afternoon. I can't even remember the character's names. It issupposed to be a comedy but it isn't funny. The cast try hard but thecharacters seem like cardboard cut outs and the script does not havethe panache of Fraser, Big Bang Theory, Wings, Cheers, Friends and soforth. There are so many better entertaining programmes out there,Outsourced, InSecurity, Endgame, Nikita, Mentalist, Burn Notice,Parenthood, Chuck, Smallville, Warehouse 13, Vampire Diaries, Eureka,Lie To Me, Hawaii 5-0 to name but a few (these are all my favorites)that I feel it could have potential but falls down badly, which is ashame as it could be a good series. I think we are all spoilt with thelikes of excellent writers like James Burrowshttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm0123273/ Glen & Les Charles who are famousfor Cheers, Frasier, Wings, Wil & Grace, Dharma etc so it is a hard actto follow. It has things in common with 30 rock, how i met your mother, community I suppose. If it runs more than 20 episodes I would besurprised. Update so they have picked it up for a second season - itjust goes to show that something so banal is fodder en mass.

Happy Happy!!

It has been a long time since I found any sitcom hilarious sinceFRIENDS, thank God for Modern Family now I have something to watch on,but is it enough? No way! And imagine how delighted I was when I watched Happy Endingspilot. It's unique, funny and you can relate to all the characters.Personally, I love all of them but if I have to choose it would be Maxand Penny; Max is charming, sassy and a slacker which add more pointsto him, and Penny? she reminds me of Phoebe Buffay but in less weirdworld. I think I speak for every guy when I say that we watch thisseries cause of Elisha Cuthbert, though ironically her character isflat (gradually changing in second season), of course she is pretty tolook at, but have you see her on-screen sister? Eliza Coupe is mamacitasexy! My favorite episode from Season 1 would be 'Mein coming out' and 'Theshershow redemption', both brilliantly written and has its own warmthat will surely bring smile to every viewers. Recommended!

Not terrible, not awful... not even pretty bad.

I'm not sure whether being a comedy about a group of friends is enoughto be called an attempt at recreating Friends. Maybe if all the actiontook place in three or four permanent stage sets and the actors pausedfor laughter after every punctuation mark, there'd be more of a case. For what it's worth, this show gives its viewers (and its characters)credit for having a brain and for being able to know when things arefunny. Which they are, often. Max is probably the standout, but prettymuch all the characters are a good mix of clever and ridiculous. They're also - what a relief - genuinely self-deprecating.I like the humility of a new sitcom that has smart writers and actuallyfunny actors, who are all hoping people will become fond of them beforenetwork executives with short-term vision start swinging axes. Here's to opinions that take longer than two minutes to form.

Could be so good...

The idea and character outlines have the potential of a long runmasterpiece, but the build of the episodes makes you wonder whetherit's supposed to be a sitcom or a drama. It has all the components forthe love and loss drama, but lacks of any actual drama. Never does aconflict span over more than one episode, it always end on good terms, making it feel like petty bickering, missing the real characterdevelopment and depth that you'd want. At the same time it's not nearlyenough jokes or characters with lack of insight to mark it comedyeither. At some point you start wondering if it's just a How I Met YourMother ripoff. Still I can't kill it completely, cause there are a fewfunny moments and there still is a story line that develops. Sadly Itfeels like creator David Caspe is a bit to green to pull a thing likethis off. He doesn't have the guts to pull enough in one direction tomake stick out from the crowd. This is his first production and ibelieve the longer this show runs the better it'll get. His time willcome, in a few years.

Well, I like it. Refreshing addition to a difficult genre.

For a 13-episode season, I found this show to be enjoyable and afteronly a couple of episodes I had come to know and love the characters. Idon't necessarily agree with all of the complaints that it is arehashing of Friends. Of course, any sitcom about a group of20-somethings is going to be compared to Friends, but just being asitcom about a group of 20-somethings alone does not make it a ripoff.I watched Happy Endings on Hulu after it premiered because I had heardvaguely of it - and it was a good decision. What sounded like ahard-to-continue concept, Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) leaves her fiancé Dave(Zachary Knighton) at the alter and the fallout as their long-timefriends try to avoid choosing "sides," actually worked here. Thesupporting cast of friends include married couple Jane and Brad (ElizaCoupe and Damon Wayans Jr.), perpetually single Penny (Casey Wilson),and Max (Adam Pally, a breath of fresh air in that he plays a gaycharacter whose main source of comedy is not that he's "the gay guy").A word of warning, ABC aired a few episodes OBVIOUSLY out of order. Theshow appears to dismiss the problem where Alex left Dave at the alterrather briskly and then we see them trying to stay friends and move on- and what's odd is the group's easy chemistry and the fun writing meanyou don't mind too much. Later, though, you'll see a pair of episodesthat show Alex and Dave fighting and struggling to come to terms withthe end of their relationship before recognizing that they caneventually still be friends. These were clearly meant to air second andthird. If you watch them in this order, the friendship will probablyseem more organic than the quick fix of the second episode as aired.Other than this hiccup, this first season is fun and light. Cuthbertand Knighton play their relationship perfectly - they have years ofhistory and still like each other as people, but play those awkwardmoments where one starts to move on romantically quite poignantly. Thetransition is never made to look easy. Coupe, most well-known perhapsfor her turn on the later seasons of Scrubs, is hilarious as thecontrol-freak Jane and Wayans plays the long-suffering husband withjust the right amount of tolerance born out of love. The episode that I would hands-down show to any first-time viewer isDave of the Dead. The heart-warming A-story is Dave trying to revisithis dream of opening a restaurant (his idea is terrible, but Janedoesn't want anyone to crush his dream yet). However, it is the B-storythat steals the show: Penny meets a great funny guy while doing laundry(and of course wearing their awkward laundry day outfits) only todiscover that he ACTUALLY dresses like that. Max has the best linehere: "Penny, you know what he is? He's a hipster. Everything that youlike, he likes ironically." He takes her to an underground mix tapeparty and invites her and the group to a 90's-themed bat mitzvah, butis immediately disgusted when Penny actually dresses up for the themebecause it seems like she's trying too hard.I was convinced I was the only person watching this show (though I sentlinks for Dave of the Dead to everyone!) and was delighted that ABCrenewed it. Hopefully it can be paired with something strong in thefall to get the viewership it deserves.

Love it! A successor to 'Friends'

This show is hilarious. I just got caught up on the first season and amnow watching the 2nd. This show is right up my alley. I am a huge fanof ensemble shows (i.e. Friends, Frasier, etc) and Happy Endings hasthat 90s-vibe. I'm around the same age as the actors so that helps merelate as well. The humor is great w/o being repugnant or over-the-topvulgar, and I've found myself liking all of the characters. They seemto have a great natural chemistry going, as did the casts of Friendsand Frasier. There was a show on ABC Family called 'Roomates,' thattried to duplicate those classic shows, but if the actors have nochemistry with each other. Brad and Max are probably my favorites.Damon Wayans, Jr looks exactly like his father and his style of humoris Wayans through and through. Max is so funny, and I like that hishomosexuality is not shoved down our throats to the point where he's acartoon. It's refreshing to see a non-camp gay on TV. Penny is a littleextreme, but I guess without her antics, the group would be missing ahigh-strung dynamic. Dave and Alex are less defined characters, so far,but I think they are slowly developing them. Maybe Dave more so thanAlex. This show also reminds me of 'My Boys' which used to air on TBS. I hopeABC keeps this one.

Spectacular show

This show is simply spectacular. I've not had any high expectationswhen watching comedy pilots this TV year - especially not couplescomedies.I still thought I should give this a shot because I'm a fan of Coupeand Cuthbert. I can simply say that I loved it.The chemistry between the actors are hard to put into words, theiracting skills and the writing of the show all combined together makethis into such a good show.I'm so glad that this show has aired - and I can finally watch a newcomedy that makes me really laugh hard when watching - yet enjoy thedifferent aspects of the writing and still be humored by the quality ofthe episodes and their story lines.

First of all, I have to tell you that I am sort of an addict. Notconstantly, but there were a few shows I got hooked on and I did notstop until I watched all of the episodes. Such included "Friends","Will & Grace", "Cougar town", etc. I just had the luck to start towatch these shows after all episodes were finished, so I never waitedfor a release. Thus, as you can imagine this is KILLING ME!!! Waitingthis long to watch a show... TORTURE! OMG, the show is soooooooofreaking amazingly hilarious! Like taking Friends, mixing with a littleWill & Grace humor and adding a pinch of Cougar town. And all that withcompletely new jokes and gimmicks. I started watching the first seasonafter it was finished, and I watched all the episodes in a couple ofdays. I can't remember the last time I laughed so long, continuously...Not a single episode had left me with a serious facial expression formore than 5 minutes. My friends are sick of me telling them that theyMUST watch this show, so I'm telling you guys. And one more thing...Help me, I'm hooked :)

Really Bad TV

I Love Comedy, I HATE lame. The long review. There is nothing less than lame here. How much more unthoughtful wellunwritten schlock can you get away with and call it "comedy". It not'sexclusive to the usual "I like chewing gum for the mind" set that canget along with a few words and an accompanied laugh track but thisreally takes the cookie. Not for any other reason than the following.1. Why would you want to watch and waste you time with this show? 2.There must be something else on? 3. ABC have produced much bettershows, why did they think this would be a hit?The short review. In a nation that put a man on the moon why can't we learn how to make afunny show without saying that it is funny when it's not. For exampleFamily Guy = Funny (not to be biased but it's not for everyone) TheGolden Girls = Funny Roseanne = Funny 3rd Rock from the Sun = FunnyHome Improvement = Funny Sitcoms aren't funny unless they can be laughed at without a cannedlaugh track. The following above are just examples and not funny for everyone butare widely viewed and repeated. Happy Endings will probably not berepeated Thank God< Includes all beliefs but we're One nation, let'slaugh at something funny together for once! It's simple as ABC.

More like cr@ppy endings, if you ask me...

I've had high hopes for this one. I adore Elisha Cuthbert, and I was soexcited that she's returning to TV...But come on... It's 2011, for g*d's sake. Shows like "Modern Family","Cougar Town", and "The Middle" are on the air on ABC, to name only thesingle-camera comedies that "Happy Endings" is joining there. Not tomention the competition - "Community", "Traffic Light" - bothshockingly well written comedies. It's like a rotten apple in anotherwise flawless bowl of fruit.I really don't want to be the jerk here, but I honestly don'tunderstand, why this show got 8.0 points here on IMDb. Yeah, the castis good looking (Hollywood, d'oh) and they are generally decent actors(Hollywood, d'oh, pt. 2) but the characters are... well, they almostdon't even exist. It's just a bunch of mediocre professionals, foolingaround in front of a camera, without any pronounced reason, or goalwhatsoever. It's not the kind of stumbling around when taking the veryfirst steps... something's very wrong, that's seated deeper than that.I've watched each and every pilot in the past 6 or 7 TV seasons(network or cable, everything), and there were many occasions, when Ihad felt like: 'OK this was pretty bad, but I can feel it will takeoff, and get much better'. With "Happy Endings", I have no such feelingat all. There are just too many things that are wrong about this one.The characters that are supposed to be funny (or funnier than theothers) are just not, the lines, and plots are not funny enough or atall, the ones that come through after all, are so clichéd, that if Ihad a penny each time I've heard of seen them, I'd be rich.I have a very bad feeling about a pilot, when after watching it I can'tremember the characters' names. It's a dead-on indicator, that the showis badly written. Another 'tell' is when I'm confused about who isreally the lead character, or 'hero' if you will, but it's quite sillyto talk about heroes since it's (supposedly) a comedy.James Burrows had said in an interview once, that it's very easy totell if a comedy is well written - or if it works or not: don't look atthe screen, only listen to the dialogue, as if it was a radio play. Ithas to work, even then. And damn it, it's true: try it, with "Friends","Cheers", "That 70's Show", I could go on. It works. With "HappyEndings", it does not, even if you look at the screen it doesn't.But at least Elisha is beautiful. That's not enough to save the show,in my opinion.

daniel-woodford-g 2012-04-24 03:56:47

amazing

I watched one episode to kill time and feel in love instantly. Rarely Iactually laugh out loud when I'm alone, every time I reply the episodesI still do. Each character you will fall in love with and is hilarious.I gave it a well deserved 10 out of 10 and will recommend it toeveryone i know. The shows characters covers all demographics of theblack guy the hot girl the funny football watching, beer drinking gayguy and so on. The style is great on the show with a lot of twistedhumor which is awesome. And it has the hot girl from the girl next doorand Damon Waynes son. Emediatly after reading this go watch it, andthere's a lot of hot girls on the show.

Typical Hollywood Rehash

IF you're over 30 you might not like this show. It's the typical fareHollywood is rehashing over and over, but this time it's "modernizing"with an interracial couple (but STILL the same tired African Americanman with the Blonde white girl), one sided jokes and 80s sitcomno-real-story-just-people-hanging-out episodes, each pretty much likethe last. What makes the shows before it click with an audience isbecause they are funny, non politically bent with characters that canbe individual from the others. Happy Ending has none of this and feelsforced and fake. BUT the teenagers think it's great (but then againthey think MTV is how the real world works) and it's just modern-hipenough for pretend hipsters to smugly say "Oh yes, it's far beyond TheMiddle and Modern Family humor. It's cool." There ya go. Hopefully, like the other shows before it this sorta rips off, this one too willvanish.

mikealike 2012-04-17 18:08:14

Woth more seasons

They are like some updated more relaxed Friends, with which one feelsit is nice to spend some time during the week. The premise is just a pretext: a girl leaves a guy at the altar, thenthey have to work out how to live as dudes, in order not to split theirfriends. Their friends are not so deep or sentimental, but they are asupport, they are there. So, in every episode, we have a couple of funny events from thisgroup's life. They are a happy-ish bunch, no economy crisis, no moneytrouble, we have diversity in their gender, sexual orientation etc. Butit doesn't have to be a depiction of reality, and it feels happy, asthe title, to see everyone having a lot of time for themselves, a lotof money obviously and a lot of good moods. It's a feel good, chill out series, and the fact that maybe it hasended, well, this is just mean. Somebody just doesn't feel the publicneeds to have casual fun...just dramas and such clenched-buttocksshows, and even there some of the best just get cancellations.Happy endings is worth more than just a season, the characters are nicepeople...they should let them live.

gordocro 2012-04-12 17:00:04

Is this what sitcoms are now?

I watched almost a whole episode of this second rate Friends (which Ialso couldn't stand) show. Is this what passes for comedy? Inauthentic, unfunny banter between young fairly good looking actors who try to actcool and hip. I can't believe people like this show. Isn't the point ofa sitcom to make you laugh? I sat through 3/4 of tonight's episode andcould only shake my head. Do yourself a favour and watch a show that isactually funny like Parks & Recreation. The actors are not hot, they'refunny. Strange concept for a sitcom, eh? I would rather watch amarathon of that new Adam Sandler movie where he plays his own twinsister. Yes, it's that bad.

robertarnts-19-649346 2012-04-12 01:34:38

Great start

I read an earlier review comparing this show to 'Friends'. Theycouldn't be more wrong. Sure, its got the typical cast of 3 main femalecharacter and 3 main male characters, some who are in relationships andsome who are single, but this seems to be the norm to most new sitcoms(ie. How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory etc.) This show on theother hand is quite refreshing in a way that makes it comparable toother popular past sitcoms, yet is original and different. Flashbacksduring scenes remind you of Scrubs and Family Guy yet do it in a waythat doesn't make it seem like they're stealing that idea. You'vereally got to see it to know what I mean.So far, while writing this review only four episodes have been shown, and quite honestly, I can't wait for the next one to come out. Thecharacters all have their own unique qualities that make theminteresting and i'm sure that as the series goes on we'll get to knowmore about them.In my own personal opinion I would definitely recommend Happy Ending toanyone willing to open themselves up to a new sit-com.

Another show to add to the DVR

Same as the other's really. I adore Elisha Cuthbert, but I'm also a bigSNL fan, so Casey Wilson was an added bonus. But I DVR'd it and gave ita shot and I'll be coming back for more. The episode where Adam Pally'scharacter is too scared to come out to his parents, so Jayne plays his"Beard" was great. Fast Forward to Jazz Kwon Do and I think ABC foundthemselves a winner. Listen, its nothing like "Friends" other than 3males and 3 Females. That crappy show that NBC just axed, "PerfectCouples" was more like it than this. I would certainly say its morelike "How I Met Your Mother," meets "Cougar Town". 2 more shows thathave great writing and built some decent back stories for theircharacters. Needless to say, I'll keep watching and hope that ABCdoesn't squash it too early.

What Happens When Best Friends Don't Get Married

I stumbled upon this show recently, but I've got to say it's prettyawesome. It has the same vibe as all the other similar type TV showsand yet I still want to watch it. The characters you get on the show are different to what you wouldexpect. Like Max: he is gay but he isn't "all up in your face" typegay. He is practically straight except for the fact he likes guys (duh)Penny: she is a bit annoying but she kinda brings the crazy to the show The relationship between Alex and Dave isn't what would actually happenin real life. In real life you would never want to see the person againand you would DEFINITELY make your friends choose. BUT remember that itis a TV show and you're meant to be entertained The show is funny, sweet, cute and has a brilliant cast.
