Hannie enlists the aid of bounty hunter Tom Price to teach her how to be a gunfighter so she can hunt down the 3 men who killed her husband and raped her.
I was very surprised by this Spaghetti Western gem, which I justrecently found out after seeing was the main inspiration forTarantino's Kill Bill. But, don't let that fool you into thinking thisis a typical exploitation revenge film from the 70's, because it's not. There's plenty of depth and sadness lurking underneath all the mayhem, and in my opinion, Raquel Welch gave her best acting performance here. Not only was she at her most beautiful in this film, but also at hermost vulnerable, sympathetic, and likable. She gets raped by threecrazy rednecks on the run after committing a crime, and her husbandgets murdered by them. She wants revenge but doesn't have the skills orabilities to be able to hold her own in a gunfight, until a mysteriousman comes along, who she gets (with hard work) to help her learn how tofire a gun properly and become a decent gunfighter. There's a twistabout halfway that I didn't see coming, which helps lend the film aneven bigger dramatic payoff at the end, and it carefully explores theconsciousness of a normal woman who, although wants to kill, hastrouble doing so, just like any of us would if we had a gun in ourhands and thought to ourselves that we could murder someone in coldblood beforehand. Welch gives a very honest and absorbing performance, and quality-wise, I'd say this is her best film, period. She was bornto play this role. This quote from the film by Price sums it all up, "Win or lose, youwill never be the same again".Highly recommended to all Spaghetti Western fans. It moves along at afast pace, there's great comic relief, and it's never boring.
Spoilers Raquel Welsh stars as Hannie Caulder the woman who watches aband of outlaws (the Clemens family, led by Emmett - Ernest Borgnine)kill her husband, rape her and leave her for dead. Hannie recovers andis befriended by a gunslinger Thomas Luther Price, played by RobertCulp. He gets her a good gun, and trains her to win at gun fighting.Hannie wants revenge and seeks the three who destroyed her life. Sheand Mr. Price set out to find the Clemens gang. Along the way, Mr Pricegets killed by Emmett Clemens. In the first gunfight Hannie is in andfor the first time ever, a woman who was going to kill a man actuallyhad me distracted. This distraction was supposed to take place in amillion movies, but, I always was able to focus my attention on thefact that if I were that guy, I would kill that woman, because shewants to kill me.NOT THIS TIME AND NOT THIS WOMAN! As Hannie Caulder, Raquel was too hot! It is the only time a woman'slooks truly were a distraction. If all of those fights were my fightsand were real, I would finally have been killed against this woman!Raquel brought a gentleness and a likableness to a violent nasty role. You watch her at the end and you hope she can return to her life andlive with the killings. However, you know she will never be the same asshe was.
A good solid 70's western of the revenge formula with one vitalrefreshing story point, a woman pursuing those who did her wrong. Andshe's not just any old cowgirl, as you may have noticed from the castlist. If the plot as a whole is not one of the most original, the greatcast does give a good reason to see this movie. Raquel Welch does whatshe can in the bit limited role and she does it fine. Three westernicons of Elam, Borgnine and Martin make a bunch of villains that is atthe same time one of the most revolting and tracelessly funny. If youhave liked them in earlier westerns of Peckinpah and Kennedy you getmostly the same great treatment here. Martin especially always ends upstealing the show as the most dangerous idiot in the west ever. RobertCulp gives a good performance as a bounty hunter and killer with apiece of heart still left and a sensible head. And for Christopher Leefans like me, here he is noteworthy as always and apparently in hisonly western role of all the countless movie roles he has made. Apretty small role actually but it can't keep a great actor down. The strong influences of Peckinpah and spaghetti westerns are prettyobvious and mix together surprisingly well. The plot could havedeserved a bit more development but it gives fairly good enjoyment asit is, if you enjoy westerns in general. I consider this one of thebetter films from director Kennedy.
I've met the western, when I was a kid, in the pages of the comicstrips magazines, this was my first contact with the westernsÂso, forme, western and comic books are correlated . Here my pleasure wasdoubledÂbeing simultaneously a Welch fan, and a western fan  .As Hannie, Raquel looks scandalously sexy. The movie is pure suspense,a very straightforward fun that doesn't disappoint but offers exactlywhat it promises. This is my idea, my notion of western flicks culture. Unfortunately, today even the idea of such an independent and fun movie being madeseems completely surreal. For me, these cheap unpretentious B action/suspense westerns are one of the glories of the European cinema. Howstrange that nowadays even their memory is mocked, as if they werethings of shame.I liked "Hannie" because it gives a woman the leading role. This aspectis very enjoyable. As a matter of fact, it was noticed as one of thefew nonÂmisogynistic European westerns. The able recycling of nonÂEuropean (generally, American) western actorsin nonÂAmerican westerns is a fascinating thing for me. In thisdirection, "Hannie" is a feast, a regal. "Hannie" achieves exactly what it sets itself up to.So for me the westerns meant primarily comicÂstrips and novels (from"The Jackal's Fangs" to "Captain Apache" and "WW West"Âthe comicstrips;and from Frânculescu and Reid to May and Cooper ).I enjoyintensely the comicÂstrips quality of movies like this "Hannie", withthe action, the fun ,the suspense and the noÂnonsense approach. Theseare good things in a movie. Above all, "Caulder" looks so deprived ofthe traditional sentimental crap! For me the western is the peak of thecool, of the fun and of the violence; this is especially true about thegreat European westerns. In a few words, Welch is cool, the action issuspenseful and the film is violent.
I first saw this film on TV in early August,1977,and laughed all the waythrough it.This trio of pathologically stupid villains is first rate, andthey obviously had a lot of fun doing their parts. If you can imagine theThree Stooges as homicidal maniacs, you've got a good idea of what toexpect.Perhaps it was best to play them that way.If you recall times whenthese three guys played villains in a realistic fashion,to do otherwisethanthey did in "Hannie Caulder"would have been much too gross andbrutal.Yet,with increasing time and sensitivity,my outlook has changed.Rapeand murder are NOT funny.Ask anyone who has been sexually or physicallyabused, and you'll get the answer.Welch looks good(when has she not?),and asusual does the minimal amount of acting.Culp's portrayal isinteresting, being more world-weary,and cynically good-natured than thebloodthirsty,or quietly vindicative characters we've seen in otherfilms(i.e.Nevada Smith).Lee is quite amiable and enjoyable, but I didn'tthink that he was quite realistic, given the physical location.(He wouldhavebeen more believable in a British colony or Europe.)So,watch thisfilm, enjoythe antics of the Clemmons Brothers, but remember that rape is an act ofpower over another human being.
Raquel Welch is Hannie Caulder: a woman who is raped and left for dead by a trio of ruthless outlaws. Her quest for vengence is guided by a sympathetic bounty hunter (in an unusual, but effective, performance by Robert Culp) and an exiled gunsmith (Christopher Lee). This is sadly an underrated Western that should receive more fanfare than it has. The movie is beautifully photographed; the script adult and sophisticated, edged with a sense of mystery. The music is sweeping and faintly similiar in style to the Elmer Bernstein score for The Magnificent Seven. Welch runs the gauntlet of emotions, with determination and regret underpinning her performance. Surprisingly, the director did a good job of casting the villians and characterizing them like a cut-rate version of the Three Stooges. All in all, Hannie Caulder is a nice, fresh approach to the usual Wild West story of guns and revenge.
This review is from: Hannie Caulder [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) These film companies are getting cheaper and cheaper. Blu-Ray and no subtitles OR sound. Very bloody, the crappy red blood that doesn't look like real blood. A goood cast wasted on a crappy predictable movie. I sure could have done without this one. I'm going to have to start reading the bottom revues first, the ones where the truth lies.
This western is centered on three outlaws, three brothers who skim the frontier, as much as they can, and they can very little. They kill for pleasure and also to compensate their inability at robbing a bank properly or attacking a stage coach successfully. They are flunkies in the field. They run into a stagecoach station and they kill the station master, rape his wife and burn the station to the earth. Then the wife who wants vengeance runs into a bounty hunter. She will learn the trade and go through with her vengeance. The details create the suspense of the film and give it a real deep emotional value. The film also reveals how these outlaws could survive easily in some western cities because the local sheriff had an agreement with them : no trouble and he would disregard the WANTED notices, till something happens. Raquel Welch embodies her part with conviction.Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
This review is from: Hannie Caulder [VHS] (VHS Tape) I liked this film because it was just plane Western and boy was Raquel Welch looking beautiful as she is today. Although it just went straightforward, from the gang rape to shooting all of them, but I liked it because they all gave good performance and the sountrack is wow, like excellent(I loved it and if only it was still on CD or something)
Raquel Welch stars as the title character in this lively, oddballWestern that alternates between a serious tone and a comedic one. Ms.Welch, who looks MIGHTY fine throughout, has her life forever alteredby the villainous Clemens brothers. They kill her husband, take turnsraping her, then burn down her house! Hannie becomes coldly determinedto exact vengeance upon them, and keeps pestering bounty hunter ThomasLuther Price (Robert Culp) to teach her the fine art of shootin'.Eventually, he agrees. The movie has an extremely intriguing pedigree:it's produced by the British company Tigon, was shot in Spain, and wasdirected by American Western specialist Burt Kennedy ("The War Wagon","Support Your Local Sheriff!"). Not only that, but it actually playsits nasty bad guys for laughs much of the time, and Ernest Borgnine (asEmmett), Jack Elam (as Frank), and Strother Martin (as Rufus) arepriceless as they spend much of their time bickering with each other;Martin is particularly funny. This thing gets off to one Hell of agreat start by coming up with a unique way to view a bank robbery:through the barrels of a shotgun! Superb widescreen photography(cinematography by Edward Scaife, camera-work by John Harris),beautiful scenery, and soaring music by Ken Thorne only add to the funfactor. Welch is quite easy to watch, and Culp, in one of his best everroles, is excellent as the reluctant teacher. Diana Dors is wasted in anothing role as a madame, but there's still great curiosity value inseeing Sir Christopher Lee here, as he plays Bailey, the kindlygunsmith who lives out in the middle of nowhere; his performance iswonderful. Look also for Aldo Sambrell, uncredited as a Mexicansoldier, and Stephen Boyd, who has perhaps the most interesting role inthe entire movie, as the mysterious and ultimately helpful "preacher".He utters not a word, yet has an undeniable presence. A jaunty pace andgenerous doses of the red stuff help to make this a solid visceralentertainment. Quotable dialogue includes the gem "There are no hardwomen, only soft men." Clocking in at a trim 86 minutes, "HannieCaulder" doesn't overstay its welcome, or ever get too draggy. It'ssexy, violent, and a real hoot, and one of the influences on QuentinTarantino's pair of "Kill Bill" films. Eight out of 10.
In the third of what might be considered Raquel Welch's Western trilogy(1968's "Bandolero!," 1969's "100 Rifles" and the picture in questionhere, 1971's "Hannie Caulder"), we find the late-'60s' foremost sexgoddess in very fine form indeed, despite the absence of bikinis, furlined or otherwise. "Hannie Caulder" is a British picture that wasfilmed in Spain, though set in the American Southwest and Mexico; doesits best to emulate an Italian spaghetti Western; and has as its star awoman of mixed Bolivian/Irish descent. (I will give your mind a momentto absorb this international stew while I fondly reminisce on thejolting impact that Raquel Welch had on the puberties of millions of usbaby boomer boys, by dint of her appearances in such mid-'60s films as"One Million Years B.C." and "Fathom.") In the '71 picture, Raquel (asthe end credits inform us) IS Hannie Caulder, the wife of a rancher, whose life takes an abrupt turn for the worse when the bumbling ClemensBrothers--Emmett, Frank and Rufus (played, respectively, by ErnestBorgnine, Jack Elam and Strother Martin)--fleeing from a botchedholdup, kill her man, gang rape her, burn down her home and leave herfor dead. Fortunately for the widow Caulder, she soon makes theacquaintance of Thomas Luther Price, a renowned bounty hunter(supremely well played by Robert Culp), who reluctantly teaches her thearts of shooting and the quick draw. Thus, before long, Hannie issuitably prepared to ride down the ol' vengeance trail....Though "Hannie Caulder" tells what is in essence a simple story, it isat least a compact one, with little flab. The picture is quite gorgeousto look at (and no, I'm not referring to Raquel here), with stunningscenery and color; a handsome production, to be sure, largely due, Isuppose, to producer Patrick Curtis (Welch's husband at the time). Thefilm sports a wonderful Western theme, thanks to Ken Thorne, anddirector Burt Kennedy (who had previously helmed such popular oaters as"The War Wagon," "Support Your Local Sheriff" and its follow-up,"Support Your Local Gunfighter," and the Frank Sinatra Western "DirtyDingus Magee") adds some imaginative touches (I love that POV shot downa rifle's double barrel!). As for Hannie's nemeses, although the"Maltin Movie Guide" refers to the Clemens Brothers' antics as "ThreeStooges"-like, I prefer the description of them to be found in thewonderful film book "DVD Delirium 3": "a malodorous triple-scoop ofpond scum"! Still, without their shenanigans, this film would bevirtually devoid of humor, although Moe, Larry and Curly were never asseriously nasty and violent as this trio. (The film, by the way, DOESget fairly violent at times, with lots of spurting red stuff; Peckinpahmight have been pleased with it.) It must be added that althoughRacky's acting is just fine here, she really doesn't get to stretch herthesping abilities all that much, and her sexuality is de-emphasizedbehind an Eastwoodesque poncho (although her shrunk-to-fit leatherbreeches do look pretty hot on her). Still, the lady looks great; she'dlook good in burlap sacking, of course, and still, remarkably, looksfantastic today, a full 40 years later. By default, it is RobertCulp--here three years after his three-year stint on TV's "I Spy"--asthe bearded, bespectacled but supercool bounty hunter who easily walksaway with the film's acting honors; he is simply terrific. Besides hisalways welcome presence, "Hannie Caulder" gives us a nice supportingrole by Christopher Lee as an extremely talented gunsmith, as well as'50s sex goddess Diana Dors doing a cameo as a bloated bordello madame. In all, a pretty darn good Western, with a satisfying resolution. If"Bandolero!" taught us that it is not a good idea to force your "sexualfavors" on a Mexican woman who is anywhere near a six-shooter, "HannieCaulder" drives home a similar message threefold...with a vengeance!
This review is from: Hannie Caulder [VHS] (VHS Tape) I'm a women's libber from way back. This is one of the first women's payback movies I ever saw, I loved it then and I love it now. It hasn't lost it's luster to me. Hannie is a woman with a purpose and she is steadfast in her determination. I was raped when I was six and I understand her rage!!!
This review is from: Hannie Caulder [VHS] (VHS Tape) A classic western from the 70's with two unusual actors or actresses, Rachquel Welch & Robert Culp.Mission and plot of the movie is simple. The acting between the par is very good. Why and when to seek vengance is a good story line. I like it in westerns but not in the current action movies as much.It seems to be over used in Hollywood now. The movie doesn't disappoint. I'd rate it 4 out of 5 starsfor the above comments. I especially like finding actors or actresses that did one or two westerns andlook for their product on film. I say own this one.
Ernest Borgnine, Strother Martin, and Jack Elam, play outlaw bumblingbrothers in "Hannie Caulder". After killing her husband and brutalizingher, Raquel Welch seeks revenge, with the aid of a bounty hunter,Robert Culp. Despite the fact that Raquel Welch looks the part of afrontier woman about as much as Woody Allen looks like Clint Eastwood, the film works. It is refreshing to have three great character actorsas the squabbling villains, and the acting by everyone is totallyacceptable, even with the uneasy shifts between humor and violence. There also appears to be several nods to Sergio Leone's westerntrilogy, Raquel wears a poncho, much like Clint Eastwood. In thecemetery two additional graves are being dug, before the occupants aredead, similar to the "A Fistful of Dollars" number of coffins mistake.Lee Van Cleef's slapping around the whore in "The Good, the Bad, andthe Ugly", is duplicated by Ernest Borgnine in the rape scene withRaquel Welch. Finally, the film progresses at the leisurely pace of a"spaghetti western", and admirers of that genre should seek this oneout. - MERK
I when I saw this movie I was hesitant about buying because I could picture Raquel Welch being in a western. Boy was I wrong! Raquel Welch played the role of Hannie Caulder living in a small house with here husband. Ernest Borginine, Jack Elam and Rufus Clemens play the role of three ruthless cowboys. When the 3 brothers pay Hannie Caulder visit things turn ugly and Hannie sets out for revenge. Enter Robert Culp who plays the role Thomas Luther Price a bounty hunter who takes Hannie under his wing. Price teaches Hannie how to shoot a gun and that's when things start to get interesting. If you're a Raquel fan you'll enjoy this different but none the less great movie. The movie starts out slow but shifts into hide gear not long after it starts.
A nice musical score, with a good solo guitar sequence in the middlethat recurs from time to time. The relationship between Hannie Caulder(Raquel Welch) and Thomas Luther Price (Robert Culp) matures over timeand is the really interesting part of this film. Steven Boyd's bit partcould have been left out altogether with no loss to the story. Thethree "village idiots" as I call them, provide some comic relief. The editing on the film was pretty bad. In one or two places, I thinkthe negative was reversed, and in at least one place it seemed to methat a scene was inserted out of place, making the film somewhatchoppy. Still, I have enjoyed the VHS edition and would very much liketo replace it with a North American (Region 1) DVD version. When is itgoing to be available?
Very unusual Western Film for the Year 1971, I wassurprised to see Raquel Welch,(Hannie Caulder) "Legally Blonde" '01 beingraped by three(3) men, one being Ernest Borgnine(Emmett Clemens) "Marty"'55and the director having close-up shots of Hannie Caulder's butt in verytight jeans, along with a Sheriff patting her on the butt, it is a wonderHannie did not shoot the sheriff dead on the spot!! I never expected to belaughing that much while I was watching this film, you never knew what toexpect. Christopher Lee (Bailey) played a very calm and wise gun maker andrepair man, no sucking of Blood as in his many roles as "Dracula". Theformer actress Diane Dors(Madame)"The Diana Dors Show"'81TV Series, had puton quite a few pounds and had a brief role landing on top of a customer. Itis impossible to be critical of this classic film, just lighten-UP and enjoya very unusual Western film!
Hannie Caulder is a surprisingly good western with a very good cast. After a failed bank robbery, three bumbling brothers come upon a lone house in the desert. They kill the man of the house and rape his wife, Hannie. The trio burns the house and leaves her for dead. However, Hannie survives hoping to one day get her revenge on the three gunmen. She runs into a bounty hunter who begins to teach her how to handle and fire a gun with some sort of accuracy so she will be able to exact her revenge on the brothers. In a way, this is the female version of Nevada Smith with Hannie chasing after three gunmen just like Steve McQueen's character, Max, did in Nevada Smith. The gunfights are well choreographed with blood squibs, ala The Wild Bunch. Hannie Caulder is a very good revenge western that is well worth a watch. Raquel Welch stars as frontier wife turned gunfighter, Hannie Caulder, who teams up with a bounty hunter so she can kill the men who raped her and killed her husband. She does a lot with so little, and it doesn't help that she never looked better than she did in this movie. Much of the first half hour has her in a poncho and nothing else. Robert Culp is also excellent as infamous bounty hunter, Thomas Luther Price, who teaches Hannie how to handle a gun. The bumbling Clemens brothers, Emmett, Frank, and Rufus, are played by Ernest Borgnine, Jack Elam, and Strother Martin. For such despicable people, this movie gives them lots of comedic moments. Christopher Lee stars in a small part as a gunmaker, Bailey, who makes a specialized gun for Hannie. The movie also stars Stephen Boyd and Aldo Sambrell in uncredited roles. It is a shame there is no DVD release for Hannie Caulder since it is such a beautifully shot movie. For a better than average revenge western with the gorgeous Raquel Welch, check out Hannie Caulder!
This offbeat Western could have been another standard revenge flick, but thevivid portrayals from the stars inject lots of spice and no small amount ofhumor into the proceedings.Raquel Welch portrays "Hannie", and Robert Culp craftily plays "LutherPrice", ace bounty hunter, mankiller, and Hannie's mentor. The real stars of this piece are Strother Martin, Jack Elam and ErnestBorgnine. If you can imagine 'The Three Stooges' as utterly filthy, scummyvagabonds with a propensity for murder, rape and theft, you might get anidea of how this family operates. Strother Martin in particular is a delight; in the middle of a gunbattle heengages in a clumsy fistfight with one of his brothers over some trivialmatter. Another priceless moment is when he presides at a brother'sfuneral, using a stolen Bible that he cannot even read.Look for Christopher Lee's subtle and well-crafted performance as a formerConfederate gunmaker. Not your usual Western, this film is well worth watching despite itsflaws.Rated 7.7/10.
Hannie Caulder is set in the American Wild West where three scumbagbrother's Emmtt (Ernest Borgnine), Frank (Jack Elam) & Rusfus Clemens(Strother Martin) rob a bank & in the process kill a few people, theyride off chased by local soldiers. Eventually they find themselves at aranch owned by Jim Caulder whom Rufus brutally kills, inside the housethe three brother's find Jim's wife Hannie (Raquel Welch) & they takeit in turns to beat & rape her before setting the house on fire &riding off into the distance. Hannie is left for dead but survives & bychance a bounty hunter named Thomas Luther Price (Robert Price) findsher, Hannie convinces him to show her how to shoot properly in anattempt to hunt down the Clemens brother's & take revenge by killingthem...This English production was directed by Burt Kennedy & was produced inpart by Tigon films who were responsible for a slew of Anglo horrorfilms such as Curse of the Crimsn Altar (1968), The Blood Beast Terror(1968), The Haunted House of Horror (1969), The Beast in the Cellar(1970), Blood on Satan's Claw (1971), Doomwatch (1972) & Virgin Witch(1972) so this cross between an exploitation flick & a spaghettiWestern on the surface seemed like a strange choice of film for Tigonto make. Anyway, the script by director Kennedy & David Haft under theodd pseudonym of Z.X. Jones is an entertaining cross between a SergioLeone Western & I Spit on Your Grave (1978) with a touch of MontyPython style slapstick thrown there for good measure. It's a curiousmixture that isn't entirely successful but at the same time providesgood entertainment, it's surprisingly violent & bloody on occasionwhich almost seems at odds with t's Three Stooges type slapstick anticsof the main villains who one moment can be nasty pieces of work & thenext bumbling idiots. The character of Hannie Caulder is kept to aminimum & she barely says a word, Robert Culp's bounty hunter is a goodlikable character who gets most of the dialogue. The film surprised meas it killed off one of it's leading character's which you don't seetoo often although it's not perfect as there are pacing problem's withthe middle third of it being a tad dull, you never find out who the manin black is or what his motives are along with never discovering whythat gang of Mexicans attack the gun-maker & anyone who has seen HannieCaulder will know what I'm talking about. Overall though I' say this isa neat little Western with a commendably dark exploitative edge whenit's not trying to be a comedy.Director Kennedy does a good job, unfortunately I was forced to watch ahideously grainy, scratched to buggery blown up pan and scan versionwhich frankly looked horrible where only the opening & closing creditswere letter-boxed at it's correct ratio of 2:35:1 & I can only imaginehow much better the film looks presented that way throughout. Set inAmerica & Mexico it was actually shot in Spain which would have beencheaper for a British based company like Tigon. It looks nice enoughwith good period detail & some decent shoot outs & action. There's somegory gunshot wounds & a fairly explicit rape which is just aboutgraphic enough to get it's point across without slipping into pureunnecessary exploitation. For those wondering Raquel Welch does not getnaked in this film at any stage.Technically the film is fine with decent enough production values, goodsets, costumes & period detail although it does use the day-for-nightprocess on a few occasions which I never like. The acting is prettygood by a strong cast including Diana Dors & an unusual role forChristopher Lee, Welch looks nice enough but isn't much of an actressso maybe it's a good thing she doesn't have to say a lot.Hannie Caulder is a neat rape/revenge Western that has some oddballcomedy moments in it as well, it's a mixture that doesn't always workperfectly but it's entertaining all the same & definitely worth a watchpreferably in it's original widescreen ratio if at all possible.Overall I liked it, what more can I say?
