The powerful alcoholic and clumsy John Hancock is the most hated person in Los Angeles, as in spite of saving lives, he also destroys properties causing high cost to the city to fix his damages. When he saves the life of the PR Ray Embrey from a train, the executive feels in debt with Hancock and decides to change his image. He brings the anti-hero to have dinner at his home, and introduces him to his son and fan Aaron and to his wife, Mary. But Mary does not want Hancock in her life.
OK people this is my first comment ever so don't flame me to hard OK. Iwatched this movie yesterday and i must say i was surprised by it.Hancock is a superhero movie and i must say i don't like them verymuch. A friend of mine convinced me to come with him and we enjoyed themovie i must say. What makes this movie fun to watch is Will Smith and his sorecognizable humor. And that its not an average superhero movie, theplot is a little different from spider man, iron man and those otherMarvel productions.Don't expect to much from this movie, it does what it does. My opinionis that if you don't expect to much you will enjoy yourself.
I was lucky enough to go to a pre-screening of Hancock last night and Ireally enjoyed it. I don't understand all of the criticism this movieis receiving. Everyone take a second and realize this is not a Marvelor DC comic book superhero movie. Now think about that again. It is adifferent story entirely and has some very unique elements.Hancock isn't action packed. It doesn't have a Superhero vs.Supervillan plot. I would probably describe it as a character study ofthe superhero. I think this movie does a better job of addressing someof the issues (and vices) a superhero probably would have if theyexisted today. The biggest conflict in the movie is within Will Smith'scharacter's attitude, not necessarily good vs. evil.I think much of the criticism I have read about is motivated byexpectations that were not met, which isn't fair at all. If you watchHancock with only the expectation of being entertained, you will leavehappy. Its a good movie, don't jump on the bandwagon of not liking itjust because you can. Give it a chance and take it for what it is, aJuly 4th action/comedy.
OK, the concept is funny. A "super hero" that is nothing but a lush andcauses so much damage that the mayor wants him to leave; "Go to NewYork." I only tuned in to see Charlize Theron. I'd watch her inanything; even a PG-13 film designed to appeal to People's and TeenChoice audiences.Jason Bateman is a loser PR agent that is going to re-create Hancockand make him as lovable as Superman.Bateman doesn't know about his wife (Theron). Hancock finds out fromher about his past. Some exciting action, but you would be better off with Eddie Murphy inBeverly Hills Cop.
i thought this was a good movie. it got alot of mixed reviews when it came out. another movie with a twist, but it could've been better.
This review is from: Hancock (Single-Disc Unrated Edition) (DVD) This DVD was a used purchase and it was in great quality! I payed 6 dollars when purchased new it would have been 20 dollars. I recomend this movie and the seller it came from!
let's face it, Will Smith is an action man and I like to watch hismovies. This movie was not a total disappointment as I really went towatch it with no expectations, so it didn't really disappoint me.. Thestory is full of inconsistencies and lacks development... it tries tobe intriguing, but it doesn't achieve it.. and I say it because while Iwas watching it I was thinking "this or that makes no sense" or "awww..isn't that clichéd?".. the one thing that's different (at least for me)is the i-don't-give-a-damn-hero-attitude.. but, obviously, someone hadto come and change all that to the super-man-type-hero who dressesneatly, and is kind to others... but well..In short, if you watch it just to have fun, then, by all means, gowatch it. but if you're looking for a deep and elaborated story, it'lldisappoint you to the bone!!
John Hancock (Will Smith) is not your ordinary superhero. Drunk, angry, and bitter, Hancock's actions are often as destructive as they arehelpful. Los Angeles feels that having Hancock is more dangerous andexpensive and it is understandable that most, if not the entire city, hates him. Hancock is more than willing to return the feeling eventhough he still tries to help (and fails badly).Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) is not a superhero but he is trying to savethe world in his own way. A PR man, Ray spends his days trying toconvince corporations that helping the world, instead of just trying tomake a profit, is the right thing to do. The trouble is that of courseno one listens to him and Ray is easily ignored. These two lives were separate and on different paths until one day whenHancock rescues Ray. It is then that Ray, through part gratitude, partopportunity, and part sympathy, decides to make it his mission toreinvent Hancock into a true hero that everyone will love. Of course,Ray's wife Mary Embrey (Charlize Theron) is not to excited about havingthe drunken Hancock around their house and son Aaron (Jae Head) but Rayhas made his mind up regardless of her feelings.Hancock is a unique idea in that a superhero is held responsible forthe damage and chaos he causes much as a regular person would beresponsible. Hancock himself is hated, sued, and eventually threatenedwith prison because of the destruction he reaps across the city.Traditional superheros are often given free reign to do what they wantto do but Hancock instead lives in a world where no matter what you do,good intentions or not, someone will always complain. Is Hancock a new classic for the superhero genre? I would say nobecause of a certain plot twist that turns an otherwise good idea in amelodrama that distracts from the good things, such as cynical humorand real character development, that the movie had going for it. Thecritics have constantly complained about this and they were right tomake it an issue. I won't go into too much detail but everyone now knows that Maryherself is a superhero or at least has the same powers that Hancockdoes. This wasn't really a twist since if you watched the trailers youcould guess that she would have something to do with the conflict ofthe story. The real problem is the strange "myth" created to explainthe reason why Hancock and Mary exist and how they affect each other. Was this needed? No, and it is tragic that Hancock decided to includeit. The entire feel of the movie was changed and not for the better. Ican only wonder why the writers and director thought this was necessaryas if they didn't have a good thing going already. I suspect it hadsomething to do with having an explanation for Hancock as well as togive the possibility of an enemy who he would have to face. The problemwas that Hancock didn't really need any of these because it wasn't astandard superhero movie.Hancock is not a bad movie and there are some good ideas put into it.Jason Bateman is a face we need to see more often in major movies andhopefully Hancock will push his popularity higher. Perhaps him, morethan anyone else, will be the one to benefit from the summer popularityof Hancock.7/10
Save your money people. This has got to be Will Smith's worst movie ever. The Even Stevens movie was better than this, and that movie tanked for adult audiences. The plot was very thin. The "super-her0" was a drunk and caused more damage than the criminals. He falls in love with the only woman he cannot have. I am not saying Will's acting is bad, just the script. He chose poorly when he accepted this role.
I can't believe the critics trashed this! I was expecting the movie toturn to crap after the first 30 minutes based on what I'd read from thecritics. THEY WERE ALL WRONG! This was very entertaining from start tofinish. While it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, the twist was agreat way to build the character of Hancock and explore his origin. They had to provide a way to explain how he'd become such an A$$hole.Smith, Bateman, and Theron really deliver in this totally unexpectedand unconventional movie. I'll be the general public will enjoy thisway more than the critics did. If you are a Smith fan, this is a mustsee.
This movie was awful! The performance of Will Smith and the rest of the cats were beyond bad.But that wasn't the worst thing about this stupid and worthless movie, the worst thing about this stupid and ugly mess, it's that the plot isso boring, stupid and irritating, that I couldn't watch the wholething. Also it was poorly filmed. The visuals were ugly and unoriginal. This movie was simply unwatchable...It is easily the worst superheromovie ever made. If you want to see one good superhero movie, see"Watchmen" or "The Dark Knight" which are much better this patheticmovie."Hancock" it's a complete waste of time, and it is one of the worstmovies ever made.
I thought this movie was supposed to have some comedy in it; however,it didn't make me laugh. It was hard to sit all the way through itbecause it wasn't very interesting. Will Smith, plays superheroHancock, but unlike other superheroes, he is rude, crude, and creates amess whenever he tries to help. He's caused millions of dollars worthof damage and has been sued by those he helps. One day he saves Ray and Ray has the idea to change Hancock's image sothe public will like him. First, he tells him to go to jail so thepublic will miss him, then wear a superhero costume, and say good jobto the police. Throughout, Ray's wife, Mary, keeps giving Hancock weirdlooks, so we know something is up. She knows him from the past and themovie just tells up why, no mystery to it.The ending just left a lot to be desired. I didn't find it veryentertaining. Plus, I don't get why they made the special effects sofake. Hancock flying and throwing the whale looked too fake for today'sspecial effects.FINAL VERDICT: Teens will probably like this but I'd say most adultswouldn't. Also, the language used is too vulgar for real young kids, say under 12. The word a ##hole is used too much.
The '08 release `Hancock' began with a great premise and a stellar cast which seemed to be all that was needed to make this a truly memorable film. It did turn out to be an overall enjoyable watch but certainly didn't life up to its potential. It also had some questionable language and content (like the confrontation sequence in prison with the two inmates) that makes one wonder who exactly is the target audience for this production.Another unfortunate failing was the mistake of not expanding and further exploring the rather intriguing identity and history of Hancock and his feminine counterpart and immortal Mary (Charlize Theron). Apparently the producers were content with the one-dimensional story line, unless of course they're planning on covering that in a Part II sometime in the near future?
I do not like superhero movies, and avoid them like the plague. I dolike Will Smith, and went to see Hancock figuring Smith would have somespin to add to the genre to make it worthwhile. I was right. This is avery risky venture for Smith and Peter Berg. Basically the ideas andrealizations of 'SUPERHERO' are dissected and studied, while at thesame time the movie is entertaining us with cinematic skill.Smith is dead-on with his uncaring and probably self-pitying super guy,who is also not particularly skilled at his role and is often drunk. Itsort of examines the question (one I've always related to Superman) ofif you can't feel anything bad then you also can't feel anything good, right? Where is the pleasure? Hancock also examines a host of othersuperhero issues, such as how can a superhero shave? It makes sensethat when one of these last remaining super-folks (Charlize Theron isthe other) get together, their powers wane. How else could they enjoyeach other, love each other? Of course, this is where they arevulnerable and also where this super-comedy becomes a super-tragedy.There is so much beneath the surface of this picture that it is notreally a big superhero extravaganza at heart, but it capably entertainson that level. Congrats to Will Smith and Peter Berg for this alreadyunappreciated and misunderstood gem.
When I sat down to watch this I expected a standard, by the numbers,Hollywood Superhero movie. I was pleasantly surprised to be surprisedby it. Standard Hollywood movie? Not by a long shot. Is it likely togarner a lot of Oscar nominations? No. Is it entertaining? Yes, yes, yes. As one of the other comments says, sit down and turn your brainoff. It's most definitely not high art, but then again why doeseveryone expect high art from every film and then bag it badly when itisn't? Who cares if doesn't leave you pondering the "meaning of life"or make you want to protest outside the $%^&*#$ embassy about the waythey treat their women/children/livestock? I enjoyed it, and I don'tcare if you didn't.
I've never been into Will Smith's films really, but thismovie,Hancock, was an exception.Hancock was well-casted,with a high doseof great comedy(the scene where Hancock threw the whale from a beachand the whale landed on a boat at sea was so funny),romance, andaction.Though by the half of the movie, there was violence that got abit too much, not that it was bad,it was pretty amazing, but scenes whereHancock and that blonde-haired woman got stabbed and shot with bloodeverywhere was getting painful to watch when I saw that scene at thetheaters. Hancock is not an all-super hero-movie,the story was aboutwhat super heroes would be like in the real world and how to get highself-esteem and confidence to care about saving people's lives.Ipersonally think Hancock was not concentrating on the tired stereotypesof super heroes because this movie was half comedy, half action, and halfromance(though if you've ever seen the Spider man and Hulk movies, ithad those things, but they were so cheesy)and the story was about savingcaring for people.Plus, you didn't see Hancock wearing a cape, didyou?Hancock was just wearing a suit instead of a cheesy and sillylooking long cape and boots, that was how this movie beat superheroclichés.Overall,I quite liked this movie, even if the slight problems were thepoor CGI and too much violence with blood.Hancock is a perfect moviefor a night-in with friends and if you're sick of seeing cornysuperhero movies like Spider man,The hulk or even that cheesy Disneymovie Underdog.10/10 stars
I have watched all the recent superhero movies and must say that I was most impressed with Hancock. First of all he does not have a dark side, he is just a drunk. He does not avoid the confortain just the limelight. I laughed when he saved the day but caused millions in damage, wow a superhero who does not care. Hancock understands he is different and does not go out of his way to change, until he saves a PR rep who takes Hancock on as a client to revamp his image.Half way through I was getting bummed out that Hancock never explores how he came to be. Just as I was getting to the point of being bored there was a major plot twist and lets just say we get the a very detailed back story.I liked Hancock because it was well written, well acted and pretty entertaining. I would rather see Hancock 2 than the next installment of Spiderman.
A hugely enjoyable superhero movie offering a unique take on the genre, not only through having the hero be an alcoholic, homeless, antisocialliability but also because of the unexpected level of emotional depthit reaches. Jason Bateman is wonderful as the mild-mannered, good-hearted PR manwho takes Hancock under his wing and helps him turn his life around.Charlize Theron makes less of a first impression but really comes intoher own when the major plot twist is revealed. The script isn't frequently laugh-out-loud funny but it's consistentlyamusing and one scene involving two prisoners threatening Hancock is anabsolute classic and worth the price of admission alone. Hancock'sKryptonite comes in an unusual form and whereas these things often endup somewhat gimmicky - the green stuff is a case in point - in Hancocknot only is it a neat idea but it actually serves the story.Producer Michael Mann's stamp is all over it, and it's shot in agritty, realistic style that is at first jarring but as the plotunfolds and the tone establishes itself becomes perfectly fitting. It suffers maybe from a weak villain who's introduced too late and therotten CGI in a movie with this budget is unforgivable, but those areabout the only serious things it has going against it. The trailers and TV spots made this look thoroughly obnoxious butrenting it despite my better judgement I found it to be not only a lotof fun but one of the most emotionally mature superhero movies outthere, and probably the most moving of the ones I've seen.
People,Even though that I won't go into such drastic comments as some peoplesuggest that this movie is crap etc, I would say that this movie (whichstarted off in Latvia 2 days ago) is MUCH WORSE than I had expectedfrom film and from Will Smith personally. If I compare with the current box office hit WANTED I would rather go3rd time to see WANTED than any more on HANCOCK.Simple argumentation - while WANTED delivers much more than it'strailer (regardless of the script quality speculations which appearhere on IMDb). The HANCOCK actually delivers much less than it'strailer, or better say - it almost has no more anything interestinginside.Basically what you see in the HANCOCK trailer is 90% of the coolnessyou see in that film. And if you are serious action/comedy fan in theterm of the films like "MEN IN BLACK 1/2" - this film is clearly a weakweak underperformer of such genre. Most of the film deals with HANCOCK being lonely, how he is unhappy andhow a PR manager tries to get his life back. The film starts to teachus from the face of Hancock how we should care about the people, andhow bad is drinking etc. While in general may be it's not such a badthing. There is not much more of an action, than in the trailer. It'sclearly NOT enough for this film to be a strong ACTION/FX/COMEDYcontender.I wouldn't say if you SHOULD or SHOULDN'T GO to cinema. If you are afan of Will Smith - then you could probably still see it, but I tellyou very honestly (being a fan of a genre and Smith myself) - this filmis a serious underperformer! I will not go to see it again or buy onDVD (which I definitely do with IRON MAN and WANTED).
This review is from: Hancock (Unrated Special Edition) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) The movie Hancock is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone. There are components of this movie that are not appropriate for young children and parents should use their discretion. With that aside, this is one of the funniest movies that I have seen in a long time. I highly recommend it because it takes a humorous approach to the Superman mythology. Here Hancock (a being with superpowers) is out of control and an alcoholic. In classic slapstick fashion Hancock creates carnage where ever he goes. Ultimately an advertising man takes him under his wing and tries to clean up his image. It is that this juncture that the hope for redemption is activated within the plot line. However there are complications because it would seem that Hancock is not the only one with super powers. It turns out that the wife of his new friend (the advertising man) also has super powers, but is attempting to remain anonymous in her upper middle class life. the complexity compounds when it turns out that the gal with superpowers was previously Hancock's significant other in a previous life (these beings are immortal). From there the conflict becomes increasingly hostile until the resolution is found that leads to the conclusion of the movie (I don't want to spoil it, so I'll defer on more details). the bottom line here is that it is a refreshing take on the Superman mythology that is squeaky clean. Here the central character may have superpowers, but also becomes much more human as a result of his addiction to alcohol in conjunction angst stemming from repressed memories of his former life with his friend and mentor's wife. This movie is very we done and I highly recommend it. It is clearly one of Will Smith's best performances.
This is a tough crowd here in Amazonland. I wanted some dumb, mindless entertainment and purchased Hancock. Imagine my surprise when I liked the film for many of its railed about bad points.First, the idea of a screw-up, alienated superhero that causes as much damage saving people as letting them get away appealed to me. It seemed like a novel, human approach rarely written in this type of genre. Imagine my next surprise getting caught up in the film's three main characters, admirably played by Jason Bateman, Charlize Theron and Will Smith.I'm not sure what would have pleased the critics here as some wanted Smith to play Faust while the other half wanted The Fresh Prince. I just wanted to see an enjoyable film and instead got better than I bargained for. While it is true that the film doesn't know what it wants to be, screwball comedy about screwball hero, faux drama that still comes off as fairly humane and funny and not all that faux to begin with, to a third act that tries to reconcile both prior acts and does a decent job of it - note, decent, nothing better, but that put Hancock ahead of several other summer films of 2008.Director Peter Berg has a fine rapport with two African American (how I hate the need to mention this fact) lead actors in his last two films, in the somewhat more serious Jaimie Foxx (The Kingdom) and the seemingly off the cuff humorist found in "Will Smith" both doing excellent work in their seemingly different movies. But as I see it, both deal with similar subjects, lives the protagonist has to live with, and in each their way with people that care more than the protagonist may be comfortable with. But I'm reading more into the film than necessary too, only I admire. To confirm:good actingvery good directing, big, small and nervous laughsearnest questions as to "Who am I?""Sexual tension"All of which make for a charming, funny and at times almost heartbreak-filled, in fact, the hospital was one such time. Who do you root for? Someone will get hurt and that someone is decent In fact there's no real winner.Or am I making too much of a fairly light heartedsummer block buster? Not meaning to be a jerk, but not every film is meant to be Citizen Cane.
