Really?

Really? Were these people serious when they made this movie? The lead female is right out of high school, and the lead male is what, 35? What was that about? It was more like the Jersey Shore on Mtv in some weird aspect. That being said, the story was a little corny, but not all that bad. However the characters were too clear cut, almost comic book obvious. The acting? Well there were no break through stars out of this one, lets just keep it at that. Paul Sorvino shows why he should stick to his tomato sauce instead of taking up acting again.

Great Jersey film with heart

This film reminded me of movies from my high school years, sort of likea John Hughes flick. I definitely enjoyed it and will watch it again ifI get the chance, but I know that if I'd seen this film when I wasyounger, it would have been in heavy rotation on my schedule of flicksto watch on weekends with my girlfriends and a huge bowl of popcorn, ormaybe salt-water taffy. Heck, I'd watch it again just for the eye candyof David Fumero! But seriously it's about time some movie showed NewJersey in a favorable light. My favorite place there is the JerseyShore (whose isn't?), and that's what this movie is all about. It showsoff the best things that come with spending a summer there -- theboardwalks and games, beautiful beaches, and all the quirky charactersthat make up this unique slice of Americana. The movie is fun andfunny, and it's romantic and sweet. I gave it a 9 out of 10.

A charming movie!

I have seen this charming movie on one of the premium channels in the United States. Why isn't it available for Region 1? It's a shame that we are blocked from buying a copy of the DVD.The movie itself is a wonderful and heart-warming love story, but it goes beyond romance. A girl (Kim Shaw) who has lost her father finds a surrogate father (Paul Sorvino) at a resort on the Jersey shore. This man has "lost" his son due to his earlier lifestyle. He ends up caring for the girl as if she were his daughter. The story is utterly charming. There is just one thing that people might not like, all the cigarette smoking that goes on with the men who are also working at the same resort where the heroine acts as their English teacher, and where she also finds the young man who falls in love with her. I'd love to see this movie again. But - alas! - it's not available in the United States yet. I hope this will be corrected in due course - the sooner, the better, as far as I am concerned.

Enjoyable summer romance flick, with some good characterizations

In the tradition of Dirty Dancing and Mystique Pizza, Greetings FromThe Shore is an entertaining, well made, and well acted little film. Ifyou thought Sleepless in Seattle or An Affair to Remember were justcorny love stories, you might still enjoy this story because of theadded drama of the high stakes poker game, and the baffling contingentof foreign heavies that populate the seaside landscape. Jen is a trulysympathetic character, just as Flip is the stereotypical guy that youlove to hate. Whether you watch it for the intrigue or the romance(both of which are worthwhile endeavors), as you watch it, keep in mindthat it is based on true life experiences of the screenwriter.

Enjoyable escape to the Jersey shore...

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by much of the work in GREETINGS FRM THE SHORE. Yes, within 10 minutes I predicted much of what was to transpire over the next 2 hours, but the winning performances, beautiful locations, and solid direction made it a very enjoyable way to spend an evening!Kim Shaw won me over as the young woman who rediscovered herself as she re-connected with her summer home prior to staring college. She more than held her own opposite seasoned veterans like Paul Sorvino. She is an actress to keep an eye on!As important as the acting talent was the town they shot in- The locale was as much a character as anyone in the film. It made me want to find Lavalette, and spend my summer there!I wish the plot was not so predictable... I knew where it was going right from the start, and it ended up right where I expected. I also wish they had found some other way for Jenny to react to setbacks than to (initially) cry. After she lets the tears flow for the 5th time, I felt they could have given her some other choices. Yes, she looks beautiful crying, but she would look beautiful with a different reaction, too!Despite the repetition and predictability, the whole cast did solid work, and kept it from feeling too cliched.Chances are, the movie won't get a wide distribution, so this is one to look for on DVD in a few months... Put it in your Netflix cue, and enjoy when you get your chance to cinematically visit the Jersey Shore.

Nicely made feature film worth seeing

Other than quotes from co-screenwriter Gabrielle Berberich thatappeared in the print media promoting the three-day Garden State FilmFestival in Asbury Park, NJ, I knew nothing about "Greetings From theShore" when I was asked to introduce it Saturday night, April 5, 2008.Having seen it, I think the film is a wonderful example of a fullyrealized, completely relatable story that a lot of people would want toexperience with others in a movie theater. New Jersey has exportedenough natives around the country who will want to see thisquintessential summer coming-of-age-at-the-Shore story. May they takewith them friends who would be surprised to see the 'other' Jersey. Theacting was well done: With her subtly expressive facial features, leadKim Shaw has a promising future ahead of her. Paul Sorvino, who spokefrom the stage afterwards, expressed the cast's collective gratitudefor the chance to perform in a well-crafted narrative.

Surprisingly entertaining & interesting

I saw this movie on SHOWTIME and was surprised how much I really enjoyed it. The major characters were actors I was unfamiliar with and may very well be their first movie but each and every one did an excellent job! It was very believable and genuine. Also the story, plot and subplots were not the same old same old we keep getting offered from Hollywood so it was very interesting to watch; where is the story going??? Very interesting about seeing illegal immigrant employment from several viewpoints. Each character was so likable and easy to relate to. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie - as much as the box office hits and the academy award winners!

Sweet and Endearing

I had never heard of this movie until I caught it on a movie channel ontelevision. Once I saw a few minutes, I was hooked. Something about itdrew me in. I spent the rest of the movie trying to figure out whatthat something was. I think I know. It's a true "feel-good." It's not offensive, it's not run-of-the-mill,it's not cliché. In fact, I was surprised it was rated R, it couldeasily have gone PG or PG-13. Some of the humor is edgy, but theromance is pure and sweet, there are NO sex scenes (can you believe it)and yet it's still effective. The characters are real and the acting is right-on. The dialog isstrong. The plot is unique. Perhaps the climax scene is a littlepredictable, but it doesn't take away from the movie. It only adds tothe lightness of it. Sometimes it's refreshing to just experiencesomething that is in its essence sweet and good and simple. That's whatthis movie is. If I had one word to describe it, it would be "genuine."You feel genuine when you're watching it and you feel genuinelysatisfied once it's over.7.5

Worst Movie of the Century

The only good thing about this piece of garbage was the $4 ticket price I paid !!! Bad acting, worse dialogue, stupid and silly characters, and the most contrived story line ever. It was laughable and embarrassing. Good grief !

Total waste of money!

This review is from: Greetings from the Shore [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.4 Import - Australia ] (DVD) Made for viewing in Austraila and Europe, the DVD does not work on American DVD players. For some odd reason this movie is not available for sale for viewing in America. I wasn't aware such a difference existed until this purchase.

From the Heart

We went to the opening night at Clearview. The movie was wonderful. Gabrielle, Greg, Kim and Lars were present to speak with after the show. How great is that! You received a postcard and/or poster and could have them autograph for you! Great movie by talented people!

Being a Jersey Girl - loved it

Saw this movie last night with my 2 friends......we loved it. Not Oscar worthy BUT I wasn't expecting it; just a sweet story where she falls in love and What a cutie she falls in love with. Scenes from the Jersey Shore always makes me feel good. How come I never met anyone that cute like she did???I'd see it again when it comes on DVD just because I love that feeling of " first love"

A Great Jersey Flick

Now New Jersey has its own coming of age film, and it's as good as it gets. A feel food film that is on a par with Mystic Pizza and other classics. The stunning visuals of the Jersey Shore are alone worth the price of a ticket.

Good Movie But Lacks Credibility

Its a good movie if you want entertainment, but it lacks credibility. In real life, no one ever puts their college eggs in one basket, especially on an Ivy League school like Columbia and especially whenthey do not have the financial wherewithal to pay the tuition. A "real"Jersey Shore waitress would have applications ( and probablyacceptances) from cheaper state schools and even community collegeswhere many working class high school graduates start their education inreal life. I also find it hard to believe that her father, who gotthrough three years at Columbia, did not make more of his life so thathis wife did not have to work as a housekeeper. It was interesting learning about the work permit process and thedangers described about life on a fishing boat bought back memories ofthe "Perfect Storm".

Love Flourishes by the Water's Edge

Not knowing what to expect going in, I was pleasantly caught off guardby the simple elegance of "Greetings from the Shore," a terrificallyearnest coming-of-age story of love and redemption set at the Jerseyshore. Call it a love letter to the locale's sandy beauty, there's nodenying the film's unabashed enthusiasm for the power of its setting."Greetings..." tells the story of Jenny Chambers (Kim Shaw), a ColumbiaUniversity-bound girl reeling from the recent death of her father.Returning to the Jersey shore to work at a pizza parlor for the summer,Jenny's plans suddenly fall apart and she finds herself in rough watersteaching English to a group of nomadic, sea-legged (and less thanamenable) waiters at a local boat club. Much more welcoming is "Catch"(Paul Sorvino), a retired sea veteran and mechanic who once fixed theChambers family car and is now content to spend his days alone on hisown landlocked vessel. When Jenny and one of the waiters, Benicio(David Fumero), develop a mutual attraction, Catch's fatherlyprotectiveness puts her in between a place of love's impetuousness andcautious practicality. The effect of this is that all are forced toreevaluate the plans, regrets and possibilities their lives have servedup. The cast is uniformly strong, the dialogue natural and assured, withthe lush direction maximizing the scenery. Newcomer Kim Shaw bringswith her a tough vulnerability and charm that will certainly make heran actress to watch, while Fumero offers many shades of complexity to arole that doesn't just require hot and brooding. Ever the consummatecharacter actor, Sorvino exudes tenderness and heartbreak as a man tornup by his past. Other stand-outs include the scenery-chewing sinisterclub owner, "The Commodore" (Jay O. Sanders), and Benicio's pensivecolleague, Lars (Lars Arentz-Hansen).All in all, this is a well-made movie that satisfies the heart. Worth acouple of viewing hours for sure.

A Sweet Charmer, Start To Finish

It's refreshing to see a small, independent movie with such a bigheart, lovable characters (played by an able, attractive cast) andstunning cinematography.Who knew the Jersey Shore had such beautiful locations? I'm soaccustomed to seeing films set in The Garden State that look like atrash dump, not like some tropical paradise. The light is golden andfeels almost nostalgic, like a film from another decade. But life isn't exactly paradise for the down-on-her luck main character(Kim Shaw), who's trying to fulfill her dream of going to Columbia byworking all summer and praying she gets financial aid. Her dad's dead, her car breaks down, the job and housing she had lined up both vanish, and she's forced to either admit defeat or turn that frown upside downand make the best of things. Shaw is cute as a button and you want herto succeed. She finds work as a ESL teacher for the kitchen staff at alocal restaurant/boat club and gets involved with a group of bad boydrifters who she's supposed to be teaching. Later than sooner, shelearns what they're up to and falls for the cutest bad boy of the bunch(David Fumero).Coming-of-age, end-of-innocence, romantic-comedy, thriller...whateveryou want to call it, it works. Kudos to the filmmakers for making sucha feel-good film...it would be great to see more indie films that showus the sunny side of life more often than focusing on just the darkclouds of human experience.
