A test pilot is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping peace within the universe.
Now I am a big Green Lantern fan. And I actually had low expectationsto this film. When I saw reviews for this my expectations were loweredand when I finally saw the film, I liked it. It's not as great as theDark Knight, but it doesn't have to be. It's WAY better than other DClive action movies such as, Jonah Hex,Steel,The Spirit,Superman IV, andCatwoman. Despite me liking it, I still have some problems with thefilm. One of my problems being Parallax as the main villain, both we hisdesign and him being in the movie in general. Parallax is a bug-likeentity in the comics that possess people when they become afraid. Hereit's done, but I think it was done to early and Hector Hammondshouldn't have been the one. And why is Parallax attacking Earthinstead of the entire universe? Second I have the same problem withthis movie as I do with the first transformers movie and that is toomuch humans, not enough aliens. One of the reasons why I love the GreenLantern comics is because I love seeing the aliens in the Green LanternCorps. They are very impressive to see in the movie and I wished theyfocused more on Hal Jordan adapting into the Corps. Speaking of whichwhile I admit I kinda liked Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, I still thinkhe was miscast.Reynolds fits more for Guy Gardner than Hal Jordan. Blake Lively whilehot she really didn't have anything to contribute as Carol Ferris and Iwish they might've developed her character maybe if they make a sequelshe'll become Star Sapphire. Now I really wished that Sinestro would bethe main villain. Mark Strong gave an awesome performance and itwould've been the next Heath Ledger's Joker if they gave him morescreen time. I really wished that they show Sinestro's fall from grace.Where he becomes a renegade Green Lantern and tries to take over theuniverse and the final battle would be Sinestro vs Hal.Now for the good parts. The special effects are awesome! And as I saidearlier the aliens look impressive and I wish they spent more time onOa than Earth. Tomar-re,Kilowog,Abin Sur and Sinestro all their actorsdo a wonderful job and I know I keep repeating myself, but I reallywish they had more screen time. I actually thought the comedy waspretty good. And I did like the final battle between Hal and Parallax.Overall despite my complaints this is a very fun movie. It has goodaction and I actually got into the story. I don't know why critics hatethis movie. I'm guessing because of Thor they were expecting more.Still if your a fan of comics I say check it out.
This movie is fluff. Even allowing for the comic-book format, the movielacks substance. This movie is geared for the pre-teen audience. Itoffers a lot of cartoon-like special effects with lines spoken bycartoon-like characters. At no time does this movie approach the levelof an adult story. Every scene is dominated by all kind of flashylights and some absurd attempts at drama. This movie borrows the mostembarrassing features of other comic-book based movies and combinesthem to produce this unsatisfactory product. Both Ryan Reynolds andBlake Lively give good performances, but really have little material tofully demonstrate their acting skills. The problem with the movie isnot the cast, it is the way the story is presented. It is apparent thatthe director had opted to sacrifice substance for flashiness, which isokay from a marketing vantage point but makes for a superficialinterpretation of a comic book story which itself is not exactlyShakespeare. In short, if you decide to watch this movie, take along acompanion to let you know what you missed while you were napping.
I have been reading the comic for over 40 years and I was blown away bythis. I understand that they can't make the movie exactly like thecomic and I am fine with that. I want to say that the entire cast wassuperb, except for the part of Hector Hammond (the growing forehead wasjust a bit too nasty for me). Mark Strong as Sinestro was a perfectchoice! Ryan Reynolds was also superbly cast. I think that the specialeffects for the movie were done very well and I applaud the moviemakers for making the aliens seem very lifelike. Too many times theyseem to get lazy with this or give the aliens very poor makeup. Do notgo in with a closed mind on this. Give it a chance and I believe youwill be well rewarded. I like the concept for this movie and thoroughlyapplaud the effort.
This review is from: Green Lantern (2011) (Amazon Instant Video) I have read the original comic books. The base storyline and concepts are definately present in this movie. There are several reviews slashing this movie to pieces, but at the end of the day its about entertainment. Needless to say, if you are a hardcore comic book reader, this movie may miss the mark with the original seriousness of the Green Lantern story. This movie was created to appeal to all audiences; those familiar with the original story, and those who are new to the franchise. I found it entertaining, which is all I ask in a movie anymore.
Indeed, I'll even go so far as to say that it blows them out of thewater!Ryan Reynolds does a surprisingly good job as test pilot Hal Jordan. Both before and after his recruitment by Green Lantern Abin Sur (voicedby Temuera "Jango Fett" Morrison). This includes portraying thesubconscious fear he has of literally crashing and burning like hisfather, who was also a test pilot. And, Blake Lively is also a pleasant surprise as Carol Ferris, Hal'son-again/off-again girlfriend (who can switch from tomboyish jet-jockeyto pragmatic businesswoman to seductive old flame like a chameleonchanges color). But, the biggest surprise of all is Peter Sarsgaard, who I confess tonever having heard of, before. As Hector Hammond, the mutatedsuper-psychic, he does a great job being equal parts pathetic, sympathetic, and downright psychopathic! Those of you who are second-generation "fan boys" (like me) should notexpect anything remotely similar to the 1960's comic book storiesauthored by Gardner Fox et al. Carol Ferris is a redhead in this film, not a raven-haired brunette; Hector Hammond wasn't mutated by ameteorite; the two of them were apparently childhood friends with HalJordan; and Krona the rogue Guardian--though not explicitly mentionedby that name--has evidently been amalgamated with the fear-eatingParallax.In short; this movie is based more on the literary reboot GL was givenby DC Comics in the late 1980's/early 1990's. And, it has been 100%faithful in transferring that version to film.Thank you, Warner Brothers, for giving us the best superhero movie ofthe spring/summer season, thus far.
Agree with other reviewers that the "digital copy" is nothing of the sort. Maybe if they'd said "cloud copy" or something, it wouldn't be so bad. I often turn to Airplane mode to watch a film with minimal interruptions, and drain less battery. With the awful UltraViolet thing, I have to basically keep my iDevices plugged in and hope my connection stays decent, or I've gotten nothing at all. Definitely won't be buying another UltraViolet movie.
Ryan Reynolds sucked in Comic Book movies (Blade: Trinity, and X-MenOrigins: Wolverine). This time in the Green Lantern he did a reallygood job. Critics have been giving this movie negative reviews evenRotten Tomatoes started off giving the movie 23%. I believe that theCritics should watch the movie again and take back everything they saidabout the movie the first time. This movie has pretty good humor, verycool special effects I'm guessing that it will be nominated for anOscar, the action is pretty cool, it's climax was pretty good eventhough I expected to see more but it was still decent. I'm sure thatthe Comic Book fans won't be disappointed with Ryan Reynolds playingthe Green Lantern.
This review is from: Green Lantern (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD / UltraViolet Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) The problem with this movie is that they tried to cram to much into one movie. The movie seems disjointed. First, you should stick to one villan. This movie had both Hector Hammond and Parallax in the movie. Second, why do they kill off the villans in the first movie? In the comics the Guardians and Oa were only a small part of the story initially. Hal received "orders" through his Lamp. Nothing was mentioned of 24 hour limit of his ring and they certainly never made clear that the ring had no effect on anything yellow. Two critical limitations were not even mentioned or used in the plot. As we saw in Batman-The Dark Knight, story and plot are much more important than special effects. If there is a sequel to this movie, they need to get better writers to make it worthwhile seeing.
This review is from: Green Lantern (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) (DVD) I went to see this movie being very excited and also somewhat nervous after hearing so many negative reviews (which I normally do not pay too much heed, but I was highly anticipating this movie), and being a big comicbook fan I had hoped the movie would have been received better. I was greatly surprized to find that it was immensely enjoyable, and I was confounded as to why there was such a general dislike for the film. The story is simple and characters somewhat campy, but it works really well for a typical super-hero movie. I thought the special effects were great, with the minor exception of some of the aliens at times. I thought the inclusion of so many details for fans to spot was done excellently, without detracting from the story or causing unnecessary cunfusion to the general audience. It really was a nicely told story that kept its focus and allows for a great deal more to be shared with a continuing saga. I really hope to see a sequel!I feel that in a summer full of super-hero movies, Green Lantern was being too strongly compared with others, and not being allowed to be judged as it is. Instead, I hear things like 'Thor was better'. Well that may be, but this movie is nothing like Thor, and comparing them so generally doesn't do either one justice for what it acheives. Where Thor was about a god learning humility, Green Lantern is about a man overcoming fear, and proving that what makes humans great is their ability to be brave when afraid. I really liked that despite him starting out as kind of a jerk, Hal Jordan still chose to do what was right even when he felt incapable. I hope to see his character grow more in more films.Overall, I had a great time seeing this film, and while I haven't read a Green Lantern comic in over a decade (I am loosely familiar with the new rebirth and such, but I really am a big fan of the Emerald Twilight story and also Guy Gardner's character. The last Green Lantern comic I read was Kyle Rayner's origin, but anyway...), I thought this movie was one of the best interpretations of a comic to film that I have seen in a long time. I don't feel a comicbook movie necessarily needs to be as acurate to the source material as some people do, as long as the story told shares the message and tone. I feel Green Lantern did an excellent job conveying a realistic beginning to this super-hero. I put it on par with Iron-man and Batman Begins for its cinematic adaptation enjoyment level.08/25/2011 editI saw the movie again in the dollar theater. It is such a fun movie! The comedy comes off great, the villian is one of the creepiest, the constructs are a lot of fun to watch and the action is well-paced! Hopefully for a sequel we will get to see more interactions with the corps, and hopefully more adventures in space!
"Green Lantern" is an example of a movie whose importance does not liewithin the story, but lies within the action scenes. It has a very thinplot, but has tons of action scenes, with a heavy arsenal of specialeffects. This movie is a great example of movies who don't care aboutstories, plots, scripts, acting, but care about action, action, action! The plot is simple. Hal Jordan is chosen as the new Green Lantern, somesort of cops who guard the universe. Dangerous creature Parallaxescapes from prison in space and is on the run to destroy the universe.Hal Jordan and the Green Lanterns must stop Parallax. Let's start with the special effects. Yes the special effects wereawesome, cool and great. The weapons that can be created by anyone whowields the Green Lantern ring are quite awesome. But, it's too much ofgreen. The design of Oa (planet of the Green Lanterns) is cool butseems lacking of something. And the creatures in the film, it makes"Green Lantern" more like "Alice in Wonderland: Green Edition". Despitethe green, the special effects were the upside of this movie. The fighting scenes were entertaining. Of course they were. If not, this movie would have gotten a rotten 3. The action sequences wereawesome and definitely the reason why I watched this film. No need toworry about the action scenes. No problem with it.Now, the downsides. The plot is thin and there is nothing special about it. It's notcompelling and is uninteresting. It seems that the writers didn't givemuch time in composing the plot of this film. But first films in aseries have to be good, and a good movie needs a compelling story.Maybe other first films might not have a good story, but they mighthave great subplots. The subplots here are also simple: Hal has agirlfriend in danger, an ugly professor related to Parallax becomesHal's nemesis. So much for the plot. The acting. It wasn't really bad, but wasn't really convincing at thesame time. Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan wasn't that bad, but wasn't thatgood too. The other fellow actors, not far behind. Possibly, the bestacting was Mark Strong's portrayal of Sinestro. While it wasn't thesame level of Oscar-standards, it was quite better than the others'acting. But one man's great acting doesn't mean the acting of this filmis good. Now the 3D. 3D isn't necessarily needed here. Although depth in thepicture can be noticed, mostly the film just feels like 2D, with theexception of wearing 3D glasses as not wearing them would make the filmblurry. It looks as if the 3D was rushed, or basically the 2D versionof the film is blurred and can only made clear by using 3D glasses. So,for 3D lovers, I wouldn't recommend the 3D so much here. As other films, "Green Lantern" also had some amusing things. Thestrangest, and possibly most magical thing that happened in "GreenLantern" is that how being a Green Lantern can transform Hal Jordanfrom a jokeful, unserious person, into a solemn, and dedicated saviorof the universe. Plus, it's only done within days, or at most, weeks. That, I say, is an impossible thing to do. This makes me think ofnaughty children all around the world. If we give these Green Lanternrings to these naughty children, can their behavior transform in just amatter of days. I'd love to see it. In terms of recommendation, I would recommend "Green Lantern" tomoviegoers who love fighting scenes regardless of the plot or script. The fighting scenes were really entertaining, but the plot? Nah. Butoverall, I think "Green Lantern" is an average comic book adaptationwho targets on teenagers who love watching sequences of intense action.3D, is not necessarily recommended, though. Despite the use of style over substance, I do hope for a sequel which Ihope improves from the first one in terms of plot, script, dialog, andin portraying the color green. Prince AJB's Rating: 6/10 (Average)Thanks for reading my review on "Green Lantern". I do hope that thisreview is useful for you.
Decent, probably more fun and entertaining for the kids. Ryan Reynolds does an awesome job bringing his style of humor to the role of the Green Lantern. Ultimately though I don't think anyone can make the Green Lantern cool. I've seen worse, this isn't it, but don't expect to be blown away either. Worth a rent for the kids.
Just home from watching the green lantern, and i have to say i wasreally impressed. The always impressive Ryan Reynolds was great in thelead role of Hal Jordan who has been chosen as the new green lantern. This is an effects heavy movie but they are jaw dropping and some ofthe action sequences are totally amazing, the plots not hard to follow,i cant understand how this film is being so heavily criticized. Rightfrom the start of the film we are taking on a real roller-coaster ride, given an in depth explanation of the green lantern corps and what theystand for. The fantastic mark strong gives great support as usual, andit was nice to see Angela Bassett in a small part. Totally recommendedand i hope its not the last we see of the green lantern!!!
This review is from: Green Lantern (2011) (Amazon Instant Video) This story has been told and told and told. It's known to every comic book kid in the world. The beginning of the Earther Green Lantern. It was just recently re-re-redone in animation, full length feature film only about two years or so ago and now we get to see the same, identical movie done with real life actors using CG instead of animation... oh boy, I can't wait to read The Hobbit again, for the 27th time... Couldn't Hollywood use SOME OTHER STORYLINE for once?!
Simply. It was a good movie. Critics were so wrong. I loved that every scene was entertaining and further evolved the story into the next part. I do believe it is geared more towards actual fans of the comic. Being a fan, the story was easy to follow and exciting to see the comic come to life. There were more actions sequences than Thor and better special effects than any movie this year. Thor was an awesome movie also but I think you cant compare the two because they were both good for different reasons. The CGI and special effects were awesome. The trailers do not do the final renditions any justice, and I thought the last couple trailers looked great. The story was based solely off of the Secret Origin comic book. A couple things were adjusted but overall it gave the same effect of reading the comic. I was happy to see Green Lantern Hal Jordan just be Green Lantern and use constructs (weapons formed by anything the ring bearers mind can think of) enough times in the movie to satisfy my need for action. The story did seemed a little rushed at times but nothing to make it a terrible movie. Ryan Reynolds did a great job bringing Hal Jordan to life. So many people hate on him and I think he pulled off the role greatly. Peter Sarsgaard showed some amazing acting skills as Hector Hammond. Mark Strong was perfect for Sinestro. And Blake Lively wasnt too bad as Carol Ferris either. Im not going to write a review telling you each scene in the movie but I will say that right from the get go every scene is entertaining to watch. I feel Hal Jordan (Reynolds) as a character is developed well in the sense of understanding where he comes from and why is he the way he is today. The villain Parallax is portrayed differently in the comic and I wasnt too sure how I was gonna like seeing him a giant head and cloud in the movie. But it didnt bother me after all and it worked. The art direction for the movie was beautiful. I enjoyed the way everything was portrayed. Everything from the space sequences, the aliens, the constructs, and the planet Oa. If I could maybe change anything about the film it would be to show some of the other Lanterns fight a bit more. Especially the main Lanterns like Sinestro, Kilowog, and Tomar Re. But I do understand that in the Secret Origin Comic they do not battle as much since the story is all about Hal Jordan. If you are not a fan of the comic I still believe the movie would be very entertaining to watch. If you go to watch Green Lantern then you understand it is a superhero, comic book movie. Go to see some high flying action and let your imagination run free.
Wow. Talented, competent director. A company coming off the back of 3successful films. A well cast lead. What could go wrong? Everything, apparently. What was Martin Johnson thinking when he read the scriptfor Green Lantern? Some alarm bells must have been ringing, or maybethe paycheck was putting him off. That is the film's gaping, obviousproblem...the script. Packed with lines that wouldn't go amiss in aspoof, Green Lantern tries so hard to take itself seriously, whenreally, it's just a kid. Starting off with a big, boring monologuepacking in thousands of comic book mythology in under 5 minutes, and athoroughly pointless scene showing Hal Jordan's dad's death, then 5minutes later showing it again in the form of flashbacks, the filmnever really recovers. Hal Jordan is a cocky flight pilot, who, with aninsane amount of luck, is chosen by a dying pink guy to become a greenlantern. The film's villain is a big, messy blob (much like the filmitself) which runs on the yellow power of fear. Sound stupid to you? Then don't watch it. Ryan Reynolds gives likability and easy goingcharm to Jordan, however his character doesn't make for a convincing, noble hero. All in all,a big, dirty stinker.
This for comic book fans is just atrocious. Flat storyline with justhyped up special effects and a loud sound base to cover up the factthat this is just a bad movie. Nothing memorable in this or originaland the actors are just not up to par. Why they got Blake Lively forthis movie is beyond me. She's a terrible actress and can't hold apicture like this. I think she should go for lifetime movies orsomething like that - that would better hold her um..."talent".Probably has this role because of her PR (joke) and that her mom is amanager but REALLY they should have gotten someone that could haveleast act!Overall, just a waste of time, money and theater space. Not a movieeven really to wait for on netflix, on demand or whatever that you use.I would say just pass on this in general and you'll be glad you didn'twaste your couple of hours watching this turkey!
This review is from: Green Lantern (2011) (Amazon Instant Video) This was the worst superhero movie I've seen since Ghost Rider. ABSOLUTE GARBAGE. The writing was terrible and Blake Lively needs to quit acting and go back to modeling. No wonder it made about the same in box office as Ghost Rider, but it actually had TWICE the budget! Hal was whiny and uninteresting, the Guardians looked like muppets, and the credits ending with Sinestro made no sense in the context of his portrayal in the rest of the film. Hal's first use of the power was to kill a man (by punching him through a brick wall). But of course the consequences of that action were never dealt with. The romance was way overdone and had no chemistry whatsoever. There was no character development at all - the worst being the pathetic scripting for Angela Bassett 's role. Oh, and I'm sorry, but how do you quit the Lantern Corps on day one and get to KEEP THE MOST POWERFUL WEAPON IN THE UNIVERSE??? I will say that although Ryan Reynolds was miscast, Mark Strong was the perfect Sinestro, and the only character worth paying attention to it the whole film. Don't rent or buy this unless you are a hardcore DC Comics fan. If you aren't, you will regret your purchase. If you want a stupid movie with awesome eye candy, rent Transformers 3 instead. If you want a great superhero movie rent Spider-Man 2, Iron Man 1, or either of the Chris Nolan Batman films.
This review is from: Green Lantern (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) Read all the other reviews, the digital copy doesn't work, it's not ipad, ipod, iphone, compatible... I'm not sure I'll preorder another movie from Amazon again....
Green Lantern is DC's biggest hope to launch the DC universe to the bigscreen. Other than Green Lantern the only real DC adaptations have beeneither Batman or Superman adaptations. DC promised that Green Lanternwould not only bring that character to the big screen and but wouldalso lay the ground work for their future film adaptations of theirother heroes such as the Flash or Wonder Woman. Those are some prettybig promises to fill considering the only real recent success DC hashad with their super hero franchises has been Nolan's Batman series. This movie was truly a gamble on DC's part if they really hoped tobring their comic book universe to the big screen. Luckily the moviedoes boast quite a bit of talent from stars Ryan Reynolds,Mark Strong,Temuera Morrison, and the voices of Michael Clarke Duncan and GeoffreyRush as well as the director Martin Campbell (director of CasinoRoyale). So despite the fact that this movie was a big risk it appearsthat DC may have something special on their hands. Did Green Lanternsuccessfully launch the DC film universe or should we just stick to TheDark Knight for our DC fix?Check out the rest of my review out here:http://mastersfilmreview.wordpress.com
Very good special effects, even better actors I realy liked this one mosty Ryan's performance he got it spot on. I hope to see a sequeal with the actor that played Senestro..
