best musical I have ever watched

I will NEVER get tired of this movie, I love it so much. Whoever ratesthis below a ten really has no good taste in movies. Way better thenthe crap they have these days. It's so fun to watch and it's a healthymovie. All of the characters have there own vibe and problems in highschool and they reveal it in a healthy manner! I love the way that thecharacters sing. Sandy and John Travolta really outdid themselves, probably one of John Travolta's best movies. For real. He needs to makeanother one like this but I don't know how that's gonna work nowhahahaha. I would have rather been in high school around that erabecause the kids back then seemed so much more fun and out going andhealthy. Nowadays all kids wanna do is get effed up and text or get onfacebook. But amazing movie, I love it, which is why you should watchit. Whoever hasn't watched Grease is missing out. Watch Grease ratherthen Grease 2 because the second one just isn't the same! 10/10 deff.

A Musical for The Ages - Finally on DVD

This review is from: Grease (Full Screen Edition) (DVD) As far as film musicals are concerned, nothing comes close to "Grease" in terms of appealing to a mass audience of all ages, races, and generations. Though set in the fifties, "Grease" remains deeply entrenched in the seventies, as it defined that freewheeling decade's carefree attitude and innocence while drawing inspiration from the Elvis era. Still the top-grossing movie musical of all time, "Grease" works as a coming-of-age film we can all relate to - it sings (great songs from the Broadway classic plus chart-topping classics from the Bee Gees and Olivia Newton-John's longtime collaborator, John Farrar), it dances (Rydel High's Gym Dance), zips ("the chicks'll cream for Greased Lightning") and celebrates youth and friendship. Twenty five years after its first theatrical release, the movie still feels and sounds fresh even through its nostalgia, thanks to star-making performances from Travolta, Newton-John and Stockard Channing, to its clever wordplay and its irreverent look at high school - when everything and anything is possible. It's a movie that gets better with repeat viewings, as audiences associate seeing it with a singular moment in time. Cameo appearances from golden greats like Frankie Avalon ("Beauty School Dropout"), Sid Ceasar and Edd Byrnes are comic gems. The now-world-famous cast is hard to beat ... Didi Conn and Stockard Channing are excellent as Frenchy (THE beauty school dud) and Rizzo (the tough girl with a soft spot), while Eve Arden (Our Miss Brooks) gets the supporting role of a lifetime. Dody Goodman as her daffy assistant is a hoot, but the film belongs to the music and the performances of its two principles. Olivia Newton-John is a sublime choice for Sandy. Though requiring re-tooling from the original stage show, her character's Aussie born lass is a perfect combination of girl-next-door sweetness and (later on) I-Am-Woman-hear-me-roar guts. Perhaps no transformation has been so effectively cut in a movie as ONJ's good girl gone wild. Besides setting off fashion trends and the lycra industry, Sandy's evolution reminds today's teens that you can be hip AND nice. That's a testament to the singer-actress' presence in this film and her ongoing legend. Travolta is also sublime as Danny, a mix of cocky swagger and silly-boy charm that's never malicious...just young. His Danny plays both sides of the teen-angst fence, whether telling his version of "Summer Nights" to the boys, or sweetly professing his love for "Sandy" at the drive-in (drive-ins are set for a comeback if this DVD finds itself into everyone's home!) After 25 years and countless viewings, Olivia and Travolta make beautiful music together! Guaranteed a winner in any home, "Grease" gets better with repeat viewings and remains accessible, fun and genuine. As a backdrop for baby boomers' high school years and our memories of all thats happened since..."Grease" remains the word! Thrilled to have this out on DVD!!!

Tell me more, tell me more

Though a bit uneven at times, this movie still packs plenty of entertainment. The songs are excellent and very memorable. With some musicals, the songs aren't very appealing when heard outside the context of the musical itself because they are theatrical by nature or they rely on the stage action for comprehension. (See "West Side Story" or "Miss Saigon") For the most part, this is not the case with "Grease," whose songs are perfectly capable of standing alone. This is also helped by the fact some songs from the stage version were dropped from the movie and additional songs were written for the movie. We all know the story by now: greaser Danny and squeaky clean Sandy meet and fall in love over the summer, then say goodbye. Both are surprised to see one another at school in the fall and try to change in order to fit the image of the other's ideal. Aside from the fantastic songs, the film is elevated by some very good, enthusiastic performances by John Travolta, the gorgeous Olivia Newton-John and Didi Conn, among others. The stage musical's youthful exuberance carries over to the film as well, even though some of the actors appear a trifle too old to play high school students. (See Michael Tucci and Stockard Channing for two examples) This is essentially a musical for folks who don't normally like musicals. Some language and sexual references keep this film from being appropriate for children.

Musical - That's What This Is

I didn't really think that "Grease" was as good as people I know say itis, but it's okay. I mean, it's better than most movies I've seen before. It'sfun to watch, and the chemistry between Danny and Sandy is all soinnocent. It has really great musical numbers sung by Olivia Newton-John, JohnTravoltra, and the rest of the cast, and it became a cult classic film, which will live forever. Even today, the "Grease" legacy lives on! Notbad.

Grecian Formula

I suppose the buying audience for this film is people who have already seen it. Being so, advice on film quality is really more important that a review of the movie, so let me say, that the DVD sound is not improved over the videotape, other than the general DVD over video quality one expects. Don't let the hype about redigitized or whatever hook you. Also, understand the difference between full-screen and wide-screen. Full-screen means it will fill your entire TV screen. Since movies are broader left to right than TV screens "full-screen" movies have been "panned & scanned." In other words, You see just part of the screen at once. "Wide-screen" means the whole picture is shown, with black lines at top and bottom. Most people have a preference for one or the other. It's important to remember in the big choreography numbers that the panned & scanned versions are showing just half of the dancing. So be aware of what you're getting, especially if tou're buying used. Now you can read my review of the content. The ages of the actors in this film is obvious, and I personally found this really distracting. In a stage production, you can get away with casting 28-year olds as teenagers-- you can even get away with casting short adults as children sometimes. But this doesn't work in movies. --especially in a disturbing close-up of Olivia Newton-John's back teeth, as she milks one last "Su-uuuuu-mer Lo-ooooo-ve!" for all it's worth, but nevermind. The actors were so obviously ten years too old to be in high school, that this added an unintentional extra layer to the film; it this really a fantasy of adults going back ten years to fix things in the past? This time Danny offers to drive, and Greased Lightning wins? This time Sandy finds the kishkas to change? This time Rizzo's not pregnant? Time Frenchy goes back to school? The overabundance of happy endings and the magic car in the closing shot left me wondering. And Sandy at the end of the film? Sure, it might be time to shed the poodle skirts and pastel sweaters, but does she have to look like a 42nd & Broadway hooker? Isn't there a happy medium? And is "learn to smoke and dress like a slut in order to get the guy you want" really such a great message for the sweetness & light movie of 1978?Well, anyway. sellers have lots of cheap used copies, the price of which is probably worth Stockard Channing's performance. Olivia Newton-John is a singer who can't act, and most of the rest of the cast is actors who sing passably. Stockard Channing is the only really substantial actor in the film (she's won some awards for her work on stage), and she's the only performer who comes through with a genuine character as opposed to a type-- although that may not be a fair criticism, since the script has a cartoon quality that suggests two-dimensional, broad, melodramatic types. Channing is also the only performer hired primarily for her acting who also can belt out a song.My two stars are for her.

A Splashy Adaptation of a Broadway Hit

1978'S GREASE is the nearly perfect screen adaptation of the 1971Broadway musical with a score by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Themusical centers around the romance between cheerleader/exchange student(Olivia Newton-John)and a hood (John Travolta). Travolta andNewton-John are charming leads but the film is practically stolen byStockard Channing, in her knockout performance as Rizzo, the leader ofthe Pink Ladies and Danny's ex. The musical has been "cleaned up" forthe big screen (the Broadway show was WAY raunchier) with sharpdirection by Randal Kleiser and imaginative staging of the musicalnumbers by the stage show's choreographer Patricia Birch. Musicalhighlights include "Summer Nights" Danny and Sandy's duet on how theymet. "Greased Lightning", "Beauty School Dropout", a very funny fantasynumber led by Frankie Avalon, "Born to Hand Jive", and Channing's solo"There are Worse Things I Could do". As is the case with most Broadwayto Movie Transitions, songs were cut and added. Some of the songs cutfrom the play can be heard as background music if you listen and"Grease", "You're the One that I Want", "Hopelessly Devoted to You",and "Sandy" were written directly for the screen. For many years, thisfilm held the record as biggest moneymaking musical film ever and thevalidation is up there on the screen. It's a little corny andpredictable, but you can't help but get caught up. "Grease is the wordhave you heard have you heard it's got mood it's got feelin...grease isthe time is the place is the motion...grease is the way we are feelin."

Brilliant Vocals and Lyrics

Everyone knows by now the story of Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson, whomeet at the beach during the summer, and due to a change in plans,(Sandy's parents decide to let her stay in the USA) they wind up at thesame high school. Nineteen-fifties mayhem ensues, with greasers, girlgangs, jealousy, dance contests, and rivalries. I know all of thequestions about Sandy turning "bad" to get a man, and whether or notthe movie is a bad example for children. Those are questions aboutparenting, not good or bad movie-making. I saw this movie when it was initially released; I was a kid! I reallyloved it then. Yesterday, it was on TV, and I was somewhatdisappointed. The dance numbers were not nearly as tight as Iremembered, especially the TV dance contest number, and "Beauty SchoolDropout." Stockard Channing's role was not done as well as I hadremembered, but Dinah Manoff was really beautiful. I had forgotten thatshe was such a knockout. The soundtrack is brilliant, and "Hopelessly Devoted" is absolutelyclassic. Newton-John's voice is spine tingling, definitely deserving ofan Oscar. I think it is wonderful that all of the actors did their ownvocals. Despite feeling somewhat critical toward this movie, the vocalperformances make it a must see for any fan of musicals. It is one ofthe most singable soundtracks ever!

Grease is the word.........

If you had to describe this movie in one word it would have to be -fun! There are flaws in the movie but I wouldn't change it one bit! Myfavorite movies are the godfather part 1 and 2, Casablanca, some likeit hot, Chinatown, amercian history x, just to name a few, and some howgrease makes it on the list, I guess growing up on this movie its sohard not to watch every year. ONJ and john travolta are in fine formand are perfect together, the music and dancing (for the most part) aregreat. Grease will always be the word, this movie is fun fun fun! Ihope they NEVER remake this because its so good! Defiently see it igive - 10/10

No leather jacket

I bought this as a present for my wife. She loves the movie but really fell in love with the leather jacket replica that it's supposed to come with (we saw it in a Best Buy store.) I decided to buy it on Amazon (a bit cheaper and free shipping.) But when I received it, there was only a standard DVD case and NO leather jacket. I had to return it, and now I see that Best Buy doesn't sell it anymore so I guess we are out of luck.

OK, one eentsy-beentsy little problem...

I first saw this movie when I was ten, but it wasn't until I was about 15 or16 that I was old enough to really appreciate it. You know, going to highschool in 1959, in the long run, wasn't really that different from going tohigh school in 1997 (when I went), so I enjoyed the movie and could identifywith the characters. One thing I hated about it though: why does almosteveryone look like twentysomethings with godlike physiques? The truth isthat most high school boys are gangly creatures with bad acne andembarrassing falsetto voices, while many girls at that age are stunted, awkward midgets with pillarlike legs. Heck, there are even college studentswho fit these descriptions. Oh well, I guess that's the beauty of cinematiclicense. I love GREASE and hope to see it on stage someday.

Conventionality Belongs to Yesterday

Love is a many-splendored thing for dimpled stud John Travolta (asDanny) and pretty blonde Olivia Newton-John (as Sandy). They frolic onthe beach for a summer. We later learn it was "all talk and no action."When school starts, we also learn how little they spoke, as Mr.Travolta is surprised to discover Ms. Newton-John is an Australianexchange student attending swingin' Rydell High School. The way thesecharacter look, act and speak suggests Rydell is a "special" school forthose who are having trouble graduating. Best pals Stockard Channing(as Rizzo) and Jeff Conaway (as Kenickie) are a little brainier."Grease" is a moronic adaptation of a stage hit set in the 1950s, madeto sound like the 1970s.Considering the personnel involved in this picture, old-timers offerironic "rules" for the enclosed "dance contest." Eve Arden warns,"Anyone doing tasteless or vulgar movements will be disqualified." Moreimportantly, Sid Caesar notes, "All couples must be boy/girl." So, artdoesn't always imitate life. There are a lot of familiar faces; see whoyou recognize, and why. If you get bored, don't stop until you find thegreat "video" located near the end of the film - the "You're the OneThat I Want" duet performed by Newton-John and Travolta, driven by apulsating bass line, is a terrifically sexy pop fire-starter from 1978.**** Grease (6/13/78) Randal Kleiser ~ John Travolta, OliviaNewton-John, Stockard Channing, Jeff Conaway

Grease is not just the word, it is the greatest musical of all times

You can hate me or you can love me all you want for this review. At theend of the day, all that should matter is your opinion.Grease is not just a 70's fancy musical, it is a symbol to an era, anera when you could make a musical that had enough character to begreat.Today there is High School Musical, Rock Camp etc. I have beenfortunate enough (sarcasm) to watch all of these musicals, and I can'teven begin to explain how much I hate them. They lack of two basicthings, originality and being fun. And what a coincidence! becausethose are both of the mayor elements that makes Grease such a greatmovie. Released in 1978, Grease left a mayor print in the whole world. Well, there are many movies that have done that, so why does Grease stand outmore? Honestly, because the film wasn't that good.I mean think about it. What is the plot in this movie? a guy thatspends his whole high school year trying to get back together with hissummer love while doing annoying things along the way. Not much of aplot is it? And the moral? being a jerk who gets into fights, ignoreshis friends and doesn't do anything at school will help you turn yoursummer crush into a smoking cool girl who ends up with you in the enddespite all the times you tried to get into her panties? Not a verygreat moral, in fact, most of High School based movies usually have thecool guys being the bad guys and in the end they lose. So by now you might be saying, How can you say at that this movie isgreat and then trash its plot and moral? Well, if I may continue, I'dhave to say that the greatest thing about this movie, is that you don'treally care for the plot or the moral. You watch this movie, and youhave FUN!The songs are great, the dancing is great, the humour is great andyou'd think that without a plot the movie could be impossible to watch, but no; you are so entertained while watching Grease that you wouldn'tcare if someone's child dies in the middle of the film. By the way, forall of you who haven't seen the movie, that doesn't happen.Yes it's very corny, the actors that are suppose to be in their teenyears look like they're thirty and the character development is notvery deep. But I'll say it again, you WON'T CARE! and that is why thismovie is considered to be one of the best musicals of all time. Itmanages to take the incredibly picky movie critics out of us and makesus sing and dance along with it, WITHOUT COMPLAINING!!Nowadays, directors have tried to create a musical which has the samepower as Grease. Most of them have failed miserably to try and hide thelack of plot or horrible acting, leaving them as cinema failures whoonly the eight year old girls will like. HSM and many others may have agreat commercial success for kids, but its Grease which truly makes acheesy school musical enjoyable for the whole family.Grease was, is and shall always be the word10/10

Grease is Burning up the Quarter Mile!

Cannot watch this movie enough! The acting is superior and the music is even better. It's just a fun movie that you can watch over and over!!! I highly recommend!!!

Awful...

I've always found 'Grease' to be a troubling and often very lazy pieceof theatre. Above any show I have ever seen has always been aboutcreating caricatures and yet we are expected to care about thesecaricatures. I like a few of the songs on a certain level but as anarrative with characters and motivation I am afraid to say that Ithink 'Grease' is a mess of epic quality. The 1978 film adaptation isno different. While I think 'Grease' is a show that is hard to do wellI think the movie might just be the worst version of the show that Ihave seen precisely because it is so "iconic". Travolta and OliviaNewton John created "icons" free of motivation, real conflict, andconviction. 'Grease' is loud and noisy but never does it feel populatedby human beings and this is due to horrible performances. The greatest problem with 'Grease' is that it has no real centralconflict to the story. It definitely feels as if it has capturedsomething in the ballpark of adolescence. Yet, 'Grease's definition ofadolescence is such a distortion to bring out the easiest forms oftheatricality. The problems faced in 'Grease' about blossomingsexuality and societal masks exist but 'Grease' not only confounds thembut creates characters that make them seem the be all end all's. Thequintessential grade school meaning of life question "does he like meor not" is not a good enough starting point. The show is abouttriviality especially in the Sandy and Danny romance because we bothknow they love each other and they both essentially have a similarcircle of friends but the conflict that keeps these lovers apart is allabout what clothes they wear. The actors have been given a nearimpossible task to overcome to make these caricatures characters. Ifsinging in a musical should be the pinnacle of a character's emotionalneed to speak out than these characters are emotionally warped. Themusical numbers are loud and well choreographed and sung but they feelso far detached. And I grant that reality isn't necessarily what onelooks for but a certain sense of reality is needed in rooting thesecharacters. Because everything is so false in the acting we feel likewe are being lied to. That essentially what acting is, lying, but neverdo we get to that baseness unless something is really off orconsciously dissected.Because the songs do not come from a place of reality(not evenheightened reality) the whole musical seems cartoonish. I think aparticularly good example of the actor's failure is when actressStockard Channing's Rizzo sings "Look At Me I'm Sandra Dee". Channingis a great singer but a lousy actress. Granted the scene is Rizzomaking fun of Sandy because of her insecurities and I think that reallyis a compelling place to start a scene but even in her attempt tocreate a sarcastic caricature she seems over the top. I think it istelling that even in a moment where the play is trying to be over thetop that it still comes off as too over the top. Channing createshorrible choices with her body, jerking herself around in suchmechanical unnatural ways. Her voice accents every lyrical quality ofthe music in such a blunt and violent matter that we don't notice thelyrics of the song. I've always found the ending to 'Grease' to be very troubling and Ithink the happy go lucky quality to 'You're the One That I Want' reallyshows this. I was more opposed to the crowd than anything else. I thinkthis is important because it shows that even in a musical where youdon't sing but are there there has to be a motivation and conviction tobeing there. The crowd scenes in musicals are hard to pull off wellbecause you have to think about every actor creating a motivation for awhole crowd to erupt in song. The show ends with Sandy essentiallygiving up all her moral high ground and convictions and becoming likeDanny who has not mutually changed himself. I can see why Sandy andDanny all dance but why the crowd? Shouldn't this moment have beenmerely between Sandy and Danny? They go into a funhouse and yet you seethe hands of Danny's gang poking through the windows and they are thereat the end. Why? I don't think the actors or the director thought hardhere because they appear like gorillas and it makes the endingtroubling. It can't just be gratuitous placement of characters even ifthey don't sing and just dance they still have to have motivation. Ifone doesn't just sit back and turn their brain off here than the endingfeels symbolically like rape. I realize I might be looking too hardinto this but I DID care about Sandy in a way. The inclusion of theseapes actually left me after viewing 'Grease' to think that Danny wasn'tgoing to "shape up" and so the lyrics ultimately meant nothing andSandy's metamorphosis is a defeat. Having the lyrics mean nothing isthe worst thing you can do in a musical. It is telling that thishappens in 'Grease' during it's most famous number.Sure 'Grease' may be escapist and the musical quality I suppose is kindof fun but the acting is awful. I want to see a production of 'Grease'which has Danny and Sandy in it and not the bad boy and the nice girlwith their groupies.

It's still the word, it still has meaning

Grease will live on forever as one of the greatest musicals of all timeand it will do this because of it's story, it's music and the cast whobrought it to life. There will be imitations and spin-offs but the original is still thebest and Grease captures elements of everyones high school experiencebeautifully. The cast are fantastic from John Travolta right down to the supportingplayers while the songs come thick and fast and are still belovedtoday. At almost any wedding a Grease song will be played and haveeveryone dancing and this is a testament to this film.Anyone can enjoy it, anyone can sing along with it - in my opinion ifyou're looking for a musical to watch then Grease is the word.

Grease for a New Generation

My friend purchased this DVD for my birthday. Growing up, Grease was definitley my favorite movie and I hadn't watched it in several years. We popped the movie in and settled down with her 7 year old daughter to watch it. As soon as it started, we were singing along to all the songs and laughing along with the dialog. Her daughter thought we were crazy for knowing all the words, but she was quickly engrossed into the movie and it is now her favorite as well. Now that we have converted my friends daughter as a Grease fan, she want's to be Sandy for halloween. Grease is just a timeless movie that is fun for the whole family to watch.
