Waste of Vision!

This movie was the worst of all time!Seriously my husband and i sat through the entire thing and in disgust.It was aweful!There is no story, completely low budgetand you don't even see any of the porn...I hate hate hate this movie!

Excellent Indie

I read multiple reviews on several different websites. Unfortunately,it received approximately 50% negative. The release date was last year,but my friends had not heard of this movie. I did get a kick out ofsaying the title. After watching the trailer, I decided to give it atry. Well, I am celebrating my download. This is on i-tunes forpurchase and/or rent. There are a few disturbing moments, but I reallyenjoyed the acting, plot, and music. This film is about humanity andthe power of supportive relationships. My favorite quote: I love youand this fight is over. Go for it, this one is worth seeing. I hopethis film receives more attention. The acting is so real; I did notwant this to end. Do not let the title prevent you for watching, itreally is a great film. I am so tired of the same type of movie andthis was off the pattern. I will keep an eye out for other films by thedirector, plus the actors.

Worth watching if you enjoy movies that don't hold your hand.

First off, the title and the cover photo are extremely misleading at first glance, but if you give it a shot then you can make the connections.This is not your average love story.The movie feels real, is very subtle and it definitely does not hold your hand and make spell everything out for you which is a refreshing change from dumbed down movies that hit the main theaters. For those who like to think, or those who are introverts, and have trouble communicating or have been in a relationship with one, you will appreciate where this is getting at. I won't spoil it for you, but it is worth sitting through to get to the heart of the movie. It is a bit hard on the beginning but the simplicity of it drew me in and captured me. Wonderfully done.For those hungry for more movies along these lines, try out Bliss.

Not really a comedy

This movie had the worse background music, made it seem cheap. It was difficult to understand what was going on the male leading role's mind because his behavoir was not like what most would expect. In his situation, he took alot of abuse from this girl he hardly knew and I can only see much heartache and unhappiness in the future of the two characters. In the end they are together but it does not seem as thought is a healthy relationship. does he know what he is getting into?

Thanks REDBOX F*&^ers Not A Comedy

This movie made me cringe in almost every scene. From the relationship to a demented woman to his relationship with his friends. This is a terrible movie and is a waste. There was never one moment that made me even think of smiling. Dont waste your time or money on this movie. All the people who gave this a good rating are probably in this situation.

Excellent screenplay and direction

I came across this film by accident. A very fortunate accident for me.The characters and the plot were very believable. I am a retired policeofficer having worked in the NYPD and in Colorado. I have met peoplelike her and have spent a lot of time dealing with their issues. I wasglued to my TV and when the film ended as I had watched one of the bestfilms ever. The main plot was very well developed along with two orthree sub-plots involving other characters. Culver City is filled witha lot of pseudo-intellectuals who all believe that they are somehowfilm experts and filled with all sorts of wisdom about life in general.This adds to the great direction as the viewer is watching life in thatcommunity as the main characters are developed.

The movie was ok

The movie was ok. A lot of people said that main actor was kinda creepy while others said he was just really deep feeling. To me it was a little of both. I personally would think that the guy was stalking me. I don't know what kind of woman would just let someone into their home that quickly to sleep over. Although, I'm sure there are women out there like that who would let a guy in their home after knowing him for only hours. I admittedly get emotional during movies, especially during really touching scenes. This movie was not that kind of movie for me. I didn't laugh uncontrollably, I didn't get emotional, and I wasn't on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next. It was just a middle of the road kind of movie for me. It was ok to watch, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again.

A must see film!!

Well, where to start?Absolute gem of a movie.All aspects of the actingwere superb,great story,and the elements totally worked from beginningto end,at least for me.The video was shot great,I don't know if this iscategorized as an independent film,but if it is it would be immenselyunderrated.It's this type of film that brings real life and cinema to amerge that you are so deeply entranced,you forget where the time went.Ican totally get where the writer was going with this.If any one hasstarted a relationship with somebody with a past history of rape orpersonal ridicule,and who closes them self off to society,you know thehard road it takes to try to "change" or turn that person around intounderstanding that you love them for the reasons you love,fell in lovewith them.I understand some viewers might not get the way the movieunfolded (girl rents porn,meets guy who "supposedly stalks" her which Idid not interpret as,has past history,keeps wall up) but there's onlyso much time to express a wonderful storyline like this and I give itKUDOS!! for the way everything came together , and as far as the ending,well I don't want to diverge too much into it,but I felt extremelysatisfied with the "open to interpretation" finish, have come to myconclusion , and say, well, that is life folks ~~love this movie ordislike this movie, It is a great movie in my opinion and I lookforward to coming across more like this.

Superb!

Good Dick has a very off-putting title but at the heart of this dark comedy, lies a beautiful and complexed story. Jason Ritter is absolute perfection in this film! He holds this film together. I loved all the different layers of his character and the troubled woman he falls in love with. The two characters are given no name which I didn't even noticed until the credits rolled at the end! The 'man' tries to help the 'woman' out of her isolated existence, come to terms with her horrible past, and learn to love again. Good Dick is a strange but intriguing love story, definitely worth buying! Enjoy.

Just like life, except more human

*** This review may contain spoilers *** This movie is not about atroubled young woman and a hopeless video guy. It is about any couplewho meet and overcome their neuroses enough to be able to get along andopen up to each other. Usually people abandon their partner too soon,before the rough edges have been knocked off, and smoothed out enoughto become livable.Yes, it is a story of support, unfailing love, and belief that helpedMariana Palka's character deal with her past, and finally face thepresent.But who doesn't carry problems from the past with them? And who'sspouse doesn't exhibit issues that arise from childhood challenges.That's why i love this movie: I can totally relate to it, and likeJason Ritter's character, i know that we can help our spouse as theyhelp us. It takes time, patience, and love, lots of it.If you are perfect, and have had perfect partners, then you won'tunderstand this movie. However, if you are human, with the usualfoibles and have had relationships with other humans, you will findsomething rewarding about this unusual portrayal of a very usual humancondition.

Didn't know this guy was John Ritter's son

Anyway, this was a good movie. While it could still be good without the porn and profanity and drugs I guess it being young people, people in LA, and 2008 it more than likely is pretty accurate. If you can overlook (again I don't know why we should have to) the story is pretty powerful . . . very disturbing. All the actors did a great job.

More like a tragic romantic comedy . . . .

This review is from: Good Dick (Amazon Instant Video) How could a film be a tragic romantic comedy . . . well, take two quirky but lovable young adults, both of whom have been roughed up rather badly in the first few years of their life, have them fall in love and then watch the fireworks until the happy ending I guess.There are some very funny scenes but I think the tragedy is a more predominant theme as the male lead has been through heavy drug abuse (recovering) and evidently prostituted himself while living on the beaches of L.A. while the female lead's father sexually exploited here.Jason Ritter, playing the determined suitor of Marianna Palka, draws her out of her depression and through their interaction she is able to face life again (she seldom leaves her apartment).The action is set around a video store where Ritter and three other guys work, the three other guys Ritter's best friends.The intriguing aspect of this film is in the depth and complexity of the two main character portrayals through the excellent acting. I mean really . . . this theme has been done before so it is all in the substance of the characters.By the end of the film I was rooting for both of them . . . I really know a film is good when my eyes tear up at the end.

Lame

The characters in this movie really aren't very likable, and the male lead comes across as creepy more than anything else. It tries to be clever and edgey, and the whole thing just falls flat. The direction, writing, and acting are all pretty horrible.

Very interesting film

First, congrats to Marianna Palka for her hard work being director,writer, and main character in her first movie. It was a one of a kind.The film had awkward moments yet, it continued to reel me in as themovie progressed. I enjoyed the film because it wasn't your typicaldrama/romance/comedy. There are many loners in this world due tovarious reasons. I also appreciate the way Jason Ritter's character waspersistent on liberating Palka's character even though he came off as astalker. The only reason I didn't rate this a 10/10 was because of theending.I just expected a little more of it. I believe you have to beopen-minded to appreciate this film. If you're accustomed to clichémovies, don't bother viewing this one. Good Dick is a must see film.

Loved This Film!

I absolutely loved this movie! Pulls me in, every time I watch it! Ifound myself thinking, how these characters are very much like thepeople I see around me everyday. Complicated, interesting, emotionallytwisted, flawed human beings, just looking to be loved and accepted. Some people, like the character that (Jason Ritter) plays, are an openpage when it comes to giving their heart away. Eager to take risks atlove, even if that means opening your heart to a load of pain. Like anaddict, knowing full well the consequences that will have to be paidseeking out this alluring drug, nevertheless, they are driven to seekit out, like a moth to the flame...Ritters character, has an innocent charm about him. A boyish lovablequality, that is undeniable. You can clearly see the flaws in him, butstrangely, you look away, taking a risk on him, in the chance that hewill redeem himself once again. He is relentless in his efforts to winthe heart and attention of this emotionally damaged, and yet highlyintelligent woman. How many people do we know like this is our ownlives??? These irresistible charmers that seem to win their way intoour hearts against our own better judgment? Palka's character, clearly a highly intelligent woman, who can verballybash a man into a bloody pulp, has been verbally and sexually abused byher father, since she was a little girl. We later see her emotionallyunravel, as Ritters character, bravely tries to pull her out from herisolated world, breaking the routine of her dysfunctional patterns. I am constantly reminded as I watch this film, how real thesecharacters are! They are not unlike so many of the dysfunctional peoplearound us. Misfit, loners, abused and wounded by the predators of thisworld, left to cope with the damage they leave behind. It takestremendous courage to open your self up to love and healing, after suchabuse and betrayal of trust has been broken. These two charactersportray that there is hope in the healing power of love!

Unexpected

This was a very interesting film and by far nothing like the box-office romantic comedies I'm used to seeing. The first 30 minutes or so I was pretty put off but stuck through it and soon found myself so intrigued with the characters and why they act/react as they do. This film subtly address several deeper issues which was very unexpected based on the title, but it fits. The male lead is such a strong, yet vulnerable character- makes you really wish there were more guys like him in the world. She comes across very harsh & abrasive, but there is a method to her madness that only he can see until the end when her back story finally reveals itself. Both actors played these roles superbly.

A case of character study of the emotionally unhealthy

To be honest, I'm rather divided by this film. On one hand, I'mintrigued and fascinated by the characters, on the other hand, I'mslightly disturbed.There's not much story here. Basically, a young video store clerkbecame obsessed with a rather weird and introverted woman who is afrequent customer. And then he decided to stalk her.Fair enough, we all have had weird crush on certain somebody we met inour lives and we all may have mentally stalked someone. But to act itout like in this movie is rather disturbing. The movie turned it into arather awkward but nonetheless sweet love story, but in real life, whoknows how ugly it can get.Both characters have some severe issues which I won't spell out thespecifics. Suffice to say that we all have some personal demons thatmade us do some stupid or weird things or act in some unhealthy ways.That's why at some level, I can relate to certain scenes or certaindialogue. On the other hand, to put it bluntly, the two main charactersin this movie are pretty sick mentally. When I say sick, I didn't meanthey are disgusting or anything. I basically meant that they are nothealthy.There's a major problem with this movie: it basically copped out in theend by cheating its way out with a rather cliché ending. But I assumeit's the only way out by then, since both characters, though likable,are so damaged to the point that it simply can not be fixed within twohours.If I had watched this movie few years ago, I would be totally lost. Nowafter going through some really messed up things and messed up people,I am able to understand the characters in this movie. Trust me, I amsympathetic to the girl though I find her to be a lost case. To ourstalker boy, he's an emotional train wreck with criminal potentials.This movie, save the ending, can be a great case study for a shrink.Though I enjoyed the movie, I have to say that the mind behind thismovie is rather disturbed as well. That's probably why she's great tooas the female lead. I got a feeling that she playing herself to a greatextend.

Feels real and honest

This is an outstanding portrayal of real, non-Hollywood characters interacting in realistic life situations with their own psychological issues and quirkiness. There are lots of moments and lines that sneak up on you and make you laugh out loud, and there are interesting and touching aspects too. If you have a brain and want an indie movie that challenges Hollywood norms, ignore the reviews complaining about a lack of T&A or simple storyline and see this movie!
