Garden gnomes Gnomeo (voice of McAvoy) and Juliet (voice of Blunt) have as many obstacles to overcome as their quasi namesakes when they are caught up in a feud between neighbors. But with plastic pink flamingos and lawnmower races in the mix, can this young couple find lasting happiness?
I thought the DVD was just great and filling with Elton John music. My daughter loved this DVD! So did mommy and daddy:)))
This review is from: Gnomeo and Juliet (Three-Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD + Digital Copy) (Blu-ray) Disney's Gnomeo and Juliet is a fun move with a unique spin on an old story, through the eyes of gnomes. Its a good movie that kids will enjoy, but won't go down in history as an all-time great. It's a strongly crafted and entertaining picture that will dazzle young audiences and even keep the parents tuned in.Gnomeo features a dazzling 3D transfer, strong soundtracks, and a tiny assortment of 2D blu-ray extras which is its only weak spot. There are no 3D extra features on this disc. The soundtrack includes Elton John and Nelly Furtado to name a few. This disc is a full 1080p release and the natural depth, spacing, and size of the 3D effects are quite magnificent. General depth is very impressive, and the oddity of walking and talking gnomes appear far more realistic and convincing than their 2D counterparts. Even the blades of grass are impressive. Cross-talk is a non-factor. This is a top-notch transfer and details are positively striking in almost every frame. Visually this is one of the most impressive 3D releases so far. Highly Recommended!
Gnomeo and Juliet is a cute movie, and your young kids should love it. Like that popular story about toys that come to life when no one's looking, Gnomeo and Juliet follows the same concept albeit with garden gnomes. Two rival next-door neighbor gnome factions, Red gnomes versus Blue gnomes, battle for most beautiful garden while the homeowners are out of sight. The best part of the movie is the cameos. You hear certain voices that "sound like" really famous people, or should I say really famous "voices". You say to yourself, "That really isn't Hulk Hogan, is it?" Or, "Great impression of Dolly Parton." Or, "Hey, Shakespeare sounds like Patrick Stewart." Or, "They're trying to make that one sound like Ozzy!" Only to watch the end credits role and see that they actually got those folks to contribute those bits to the movie. But the cameos really are the best part of the movie. Don't expect the depth that's common in most of today's PG rated animated features. The movie is as G-rated as it gets, and G ratings are hard to come by these days. I think that the only way to get a G rating today is to keep the content at a 3rd grade or lower level, and Gnomeo and Juliet does exactly that. So grab this on DVD for your children when it comes out and cuddle up with them for a viewing. This one really was created the kids.
Very cute film, in fact it just oozes cuteness. I'm kind of surprised Disney wouldn't back it. Maybe they figured it wouldn't have sold enough toys, pillowcases, and all of that other dreck?Well-voiced and a really colorful film - and of course, a happy ending. "Matrignomey"? Funny stuff. That said, I could have done without the subtle gay references - the quote from "Brokeback Mountain", the joke with Juliet saying something like "A purple hat? Now that would be just weird!" while making a funny face. Seriously, this is a movie for children. They won't get those jokes anyway, so who are they in the movie for? It's small, subtle stuff, but totally unnecessary in a film like this.
Gnomeo & JulietThe hardest part of reinterpreting William Shakespeare's tragic lovestory starring fabled forest creatures is finding two suicidal gnomes.Fortunately, the makers of this animated adaptation were able to findmelancholy munchkins.Raised on opposite sides of Mr. Capulet and Mrs. Montague's fence, ablue garden gnome, Gnomeo (James McAvoy), and a red garden gnome,Juliet (Emily Blunt), are sworn enemies, though they've never met. It's not until Gnomeo seeks revenge against Juliet's cousin (JasonStatham), after an ill-fated lawnmower race, that the star-crossedlovers meet.Though both families denounce the union, the two continue to meet in anoverrun garden, where a lovesick flamingo fosters their relationship.Adhering to the bard's prose, while simultaneously lampooning it, thisstar-studded interpretation is amusing and inventive.Luckily, this story doesn't take place on a white trash lawn, becausethen Romeo would be a talking couch and Juliet, an abandoned car.(Green Light)
As with most of this kind of movies: its nice for kids and to get themknown a bit with the world of William Shakpespeare. Its classic, butnot much kids want to know anymore because its classic and thusboring... Fantasia (1940) made by Walt Disney is a similar example:kids enjoying classical music ? How boring... If there are a smallnumber of kids who will enjoy Gnomeo and Juliet they will want to findout more about Willam Shakespeare; if there were kids before whoenjoyed Fantasia they would liked to find out more about the music fromBeethoven, Bach, Tchaikowsky, Dukas, Stravinsky, Ponchielli,Mussorgsky. In an era were the classics of any kind have becomedifficult (and really: was there ever any other era ?) a movie whichcan be enjoyable is a worthy effort.www.bloggen.be/chev
This movie is simple and joyful. Starting with the story, taken fromShakespeare, which is much better that concocting an unsatisfyingscript just in order to be original. I like that the story is what itis, and a lot of the humour comes from playing with this idea ofborrowed action and characters. Plus, the kids have a way of findingout about the original writer and play, if not by asking earlier, atleast when Old Will's statue appears as a character. Then the gnomes, individualised in a successful and comic manner (honorable mention forthe "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts" gnome!).They are kitschypieces of garden landscape, but still they can be nice, in a hipmanner. They are mocked and sort of self-mocking themselves, as theplastic flamingo manages to do brilliantly. And the music is absolutely super, it adds to the general atmosphere offun. As much as I personally remain not interested in the Lady Gagashow, I could still appreciate her and Elton John's song - it soundedgreat. It is a simple pleasure to watch the movie, even if in the end I wonderwhat made me become childish and sort of feel guilty to have liked somuch a colourful and loud movie about garden gnomes. And the kids seemto love it, too.I read a few comments that didn't do it any justice, almost avoided itbecause of them. But it's better that other animation of this year seenso far, for example the much praised Rio. And it's a happy movie! It'stiring that "sad streak" that maintained in the Disney movies and thatwas passed on to other American animations, why does anyone considersthat movies for children need a tragic spot? This one plays a bit withthe drama, but finally let everybody be happy.
This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (DVD) The dvd was in perfect condition, but did not realize it was a copy of the original. That was not revealed in the discription of the DVD. I wouldnt play in all the DVD players.
Just saw this computer-animated feature with my movie theatre-workingfriend and we both enjoyed it. It's basically a parody of WilliamShakespere's "Romeo & Juliet" tragic play without the tragedy, ofcourse, involving gnome lawn ornaments. One family wears red hats whilethe other wears blue. There's also a plastic flamingo, an activeornamental mushroom, and several likewise rabbits. Like in the ToyStory movies, these creatures only move whenever no humans are around.Oh, and there's many classic Elton John songs that dominate the scoreto great effect like hearing "Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting"during a lawn mower race or "Your Song" when the title characters areholding hands. And wonderful voices by various celebrities like OzzyOsbourne, Hulk Hogan, Patrick Stewart, Michael Caine, and Maggie Smith. In summary, Gnomeo & Juliet was both quite highly amusing (if notcompletely hilarious) and very touching (as touching as this parody isallowed to be). So on that note, that's a recommendation. Oh, and Iliked the 3-D effects too.
Not really much to say about this film. It's exactly what it looks like--- garden gnomes that come to life when no one is looking and a bluegnome, Gnomeo (McAvoy) falls in love with a red gnome, Juliet (Blunt).Only this isn't Pixar, so expect less.Everyone knows the tale of Romeo & Juliet, so it was cute to put it ina kid's flick with garden gnomes playing the star-crossed lovers.Though, Shakespeare's tale was a tragic one, parents needn't worry here-- this is a Touchstone (read: Disney) release, after all. Here, theMontagues and Capulets live in different gardens (even the human gardenowners hate each other) and when the humanoids go to work, the gnomesstart the day with lawnmower drag racing. Eventually, after muchfighting and even much more bad puns, it erupts into a full-scale war.And somewhere in there Gnomeo & Juliet find one another and fall headover heels in love -- see, when they first meet, they're bothundercover (don't ask). It's when they realize that they're on theopposite sides that they have to sneak off to steal some kisses. The main problem with the movie is that it's just cute. Nothing more. There is nothing to be found here for the older set... at all. I foundmyself a little bored while watching. The only parts that were amusingto me involved the gnomes getting out of the garden and interactingwith the World (and "Worldly Widely Web"), but I was still rolling myeyes when no one questioned a single thing about how strange it was tosee an army of gnomes in an alleyway. It seems to me that they couldhave put a little more effort into this and come out with aPixar-quality product but they didn't.Elton John was one of the executive producers on this project and thatexplains why practically all of the songs on "Gnomeo & Juliet" are his.We even get a look at an Elton John gnome, for crap's sake. And what isup with that 70's throwback montage in the middle of the film whereGnomeo & Juliet are dancing while getting "gussied up"? The voiceacting was fine, there were no major stand-outs on either side of thecoin (once again, they were just cute and average). It's a good littlemovie for the kiddies but the parents will most likely be bored throughthe majority of it, even the animation doesn't grab your attention --although, it is good enough, I enjoyed the chips and cracks in thepaint on some of the gnomes. Here's something fun for the parents to do while watching -- try tofind as many references to William Shakespeare as you can. It startsoff straight away as we see the mailboxes of the humanoids (2B and theother one has 2B with circle around it with a line through it to tellus that it's NOT 2B, get it?). This actually kept me watching the wholething -- to see how many of those jokes I could find. Once again...cute. For more reviews, visit www.soveryterry.com Final Grade: C+
This film is great for children with no swearing, sexual content, druguse, tongue in cheek or anything risky at all. For Adults, this has nofun or anything interesting to keep you interested. At least Shrek hadadult jokes kids can't understand so not endangering their little mindsbut giving us a laugh. This is just a easy going revamped version of aclassic that tries for humour and fails badly. This is possibly theworst cartoon film I have ever seen. This could have been a great filmand some jokes led up to you thinking it might be funny but most jokeswere aimed at children and parents that want to read a book whileletting their kids be occupied by something safe and friendly.
I took my 7-year-old to see this and was quite disappointed. I get thewhole Romeo & Juliet parallels, but this bordered on the absurd. Whilethe story tries to depict love based on who you are and not what familyyou belong to, it ends up stereotypical, hokey and focuses more onrevenge than is does love. Everyone is "out to get" everyone else andby the end, I was wishing it had the non-G ending. There's no memorablemusic, no feel-good lessons and the animation was average at best. Theonly redeeming factor was the Flamingo. His character had more depththan either Gnomeo or Juliet's and I felt more of an emotionalattachment to him. Though I didn't pay the extra money to see it in 3D,it was hardly worth it to see in 2D. Don't bother with this one.
One of the reasons why i watch animation movies is because it is lightand entertaining. Gnomeo and Juliet proves no less. In fact, i ampleasantly surprised that this movie is more than what it seems to be.Firstly, the characters are cute. Yes, cute. Imagine your gardendecorations, the gnomes, come to life. Though the concept felt similarto that of 'Toy Story' and have a plot like 'Alpha and Omega', i foundthis movie a joy to watch with its adorable characters. To be honest, ienjoyed this movie more than 'Alpha and Omega'. Apart from its leadingcharacters (Gnomeo voiced by James McAvoy and Juliet by Emily Blunt),Nanette, Featherstone and even the Shroom add fun to the movie. Greatcast for the voices!Secondly, this movie includes essences from Shakespeare's classic'Romeo and Juliet' and manages to capture a great sense of imaginationand adventure, and definitely a bundle of lessons to learn. It is astory of two gnomes from two different families- and the families arenot in good terms with one another, that falls in love with each other.Though their love may be seen as 'doomed', love is truly a remarkablefeeling that breaks boundaries.Thirdly, i found some scenes to be refreshing and, perhaps, exhilarating. One of them is the lawnmower race. When you watch furtherinto the movie, you will understand that the gnomes are delicate beingsas they are made from clay which may break under a force. Another iswhile retrieving the orchid at a nearby abandoned house. Even the ideaof growing a plant together that represent their love somehow made mesmile. Not to mention, you will be mesmerized by songs from Elton Johnthat suit the scenes. In short, Gnomeo and Juliet is a cute cartoon that delivers and exceedsany ordinary animation shows. Yes, kids will be thrilled to watch thismovie, but i am certain any movie-goer with an eye for cartoons will bepleased to find that this movie satisfies and will leave you with asmile- and all the more wanting to live in this sweet tale of life whenthe credits roll.
This review is from: Gnomeo & Juliet (DVD) It is cute, but the previews show most all the good parts of the movie. If you are a fan of Elton John's music, then at least that part is enjoyable. I am just glad we watched the dvd and didn't pay to see it at the theater.
"Romeo and Juliet", is considered as one of the greatest love storiesever made. But for me, I'm not into William Shakespeare's work norRomeo and Juliet. But a couple months ago, Touchstone studios released an animatedretelling of the classic story except with...Gnomes.The movie was really good and it was really funny. It also has somecute characters and some good voice acting from James McAvoy, EmilyBlunt, and Jim Cummings. The music was also good because it was done byElton John. The problems I have with this film is that the film feels a bit rushedat time's and the movie can be pretty boring."Gnomeo and Juliet", is a great animated film for the whole family toenjoy.
OK, lets get the negative stuff out of the way. As its detractors areso eager to point out, this isn't as good as Toy Story, or the vastmajority of Pixar's outlet. It's not as good as Lion King, It's not asgood as Shrek. And it does weirdly over-rely on the music of Elton John(who executive produced). Fine. But that doesn't mean it can't be a cute, enjoyable, witty spinon Romeo and Juliet, with two backyards full of garden gnomes (andother garden features like frog fountains) at war with each other, andstar-crossed lovers from each side falling in love in spite of it all. And who can dislike the voice cast;? James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, MichaelCaine, Maggie Smith - some of Britain's very best bring character andcomedy to their parts, as do, in their own weird way Ozzy Osborne andHulk Hogan in cameo roles (For that matter who could resist any filmthat brought such a surreal bunch of voices together?). Yes, this isn't an all-time classic. But I think we've gotten sospoiled by being in a golden age of cartoon features that it's too easyto dismiss a good solid, fun effort like this.
When I saw the posters for Gnomeo & Juliet, before the movie came out in theaters, I was excited! I thought the movie would be cute and something unique, since nobody has created a video on the Shakespearian play, with gnomes before. I came out of the theater highly disappointed. The movie was very cheesy, it was corny through out the whole film and boring. If you watch the movie you will see what I'm talking about!
When Gnomeo & Juliet came out in the theaters over spring break, I was warned by a few friends do not go! It's terrible, their kids hated it. So we didn't go even though my girls wanted to. We just rented it in the mail and I have to say, we loved it! Watched it 5 days straight and my 2 1/2 yr old and 6 yr old have asked for it already for Christmas! My 2 1/2 yr old did not move the entire length of the movie, she almost never sits thru a movie. Something about it really held her attention and both girls laughed hysterically...mostly at jokes they were too young to understand, but it was fun enough for both of them to follow along with.Loved the concept, loved the story, loved the ending.I will be buying this one, its not for everyone as I am sure you have read; but for our family of four, it was a hit! Hard to find something these days we can all sit around and enjoy.
I really like this movie. It was cute, fun and action packed. My familyand I laughed a lot, and I loved all the music by Elton John especiallythe song "Crocodile Rock." We were dancing in our seats! This is thekid's version of the William Shakespeare classic love story "Romeo andJuliet," but made for kids. I think what makes this movie so cute isthe majority of the characters are garden gnomes that come to life whenthe humans aren't looking. I enjoyed all the characters. I thought theyall did a great job, but I do have my favorites. Gnomeo, voiced byJames McAvoy, was very adventurous and ready to accept any challenge.Juliet, voiced by Emily Blunt she was an attractive, brave tough littlecookie whose father, Lord Redbrick voiced by Michael Caine, is an overprotective father. He reminds me of my father! Finally Nanette thefrog, voiced by Ashley Jensen - I think she brought a lot of humor tothis movie. I particularly liked her red lips and long eyes lashes. Irate this movie 5 out of 5 stars. I thought it was hilarious, and cute.I recommend this movie to kids 5 and up, because it does have a fewviolent scenes. So If you want to laugh and listen to good music at thesame time. you must see this one! Reviewed by Ny'Asia Bell, age 7, KIDSFIRST! Film Critic
