A great movie: Angelina Jolie shines her brightest yet!

This movie is great! It manages to be both tragic and enlightening. It realistically captures the world of models, drug abuse and the life of a beautiful spirit named Gia. It is sad to see how the up and downs of fame & fortune and a desperate need to find love can lead a person down a destructive path. Angelina Jolie captured my heart as Gia, She portrayed the beautiful actress as no one could. This movie is Angelina Jolies best and one of my favs for 1998. This movie gets my 5 stars and 2 thumbs up!

Sparkling Diamond Of Hell

Angelina Jolie Voight's starring in role of Gia Carangi,is not aperfect performance,cause this film was selected to be shown onTV,could't be any better,likely it was no subject of making films,butto show Gia Carangi's life,an average model whose life was gone by herown mistakes,such as it was shown in film itself.but i wonder that whythey make films like that,worthless things like her lesbian style thatis been shown like she was totally innocent.because she was the one ofthe first woman that died of H.I.V .in documentary parts every personthat explains that she was not interest of sex,Nor drugs,nor modelingbut to be beloved.is it right?it is all about love?thisdrama,romance,biography movie says that she was very pure lovablelady!!! sort of they make scenes for showing the sparkling diamond ofHollywood,Angelina Jolie. i suppose there is shortage of main subjectin firm making in Hollywood.anyway,Angelina at her 23 years old.young interesting sexy one who'sready to enter the industry.as Gia Carangi the late model that died ofaids.she does anything to make it.nude scenes all over the picture.FayDunaway as her mentor.really sorry guys. thats the only reason to watch, again and again and again until your hands fall asleep from cramping. She is so damn hot naked and hot. The lesbian scenes make men cry and women bi.

Great performance by Angelina; Sad Story

I have been looking all over for this movie which I haven't seen. I finally found it, rented it, watched it tonight, and it's a very very sad story. Gia finally got sober only to find out she had the AIDS virus from a dirty needle. It's such a waste. I looked up the real Gia online, and saw the website and all the photos and my eyes started to tear. The real Gia, as well as Angelina, is gorgous. (Was I mean) Aids is a terrible thing. Nowadays people still share needles and engage in unprotected sex. There was a time in my life where I felt bitter towards society because I had issues with that and I couldnt understand why people would risk it. Gia is a different story. In the 80's AIDS wasn't fully understood like it is today. And once you become addicted to narcotics, your judgement is impaired and you become desperate and do risky things just to get the drugs. "I don't shoot." is what she said at first, which didn't remain for too long. It was a tragic story. Not just the drugs, or the aids, but the lack of love and support she dealt with. She was very young and started her career at a young age, and did it alone. Alone with her depression and the confusion of life and growing up, it's a shame she turned to drugs thinking it would be okay if she was high. I don't know what else to say except this is a good example of drug abuse and what it does. I've heard people say "I don't care if i get aids, i just wanna have fun." But they don't know what they are talking about. Once you get it, you ARE sorry. It's a terrible way to die, and you better believe you will regret it. And to die at a young age. It just isn't worth it.

ANGELINA IN GIA

I THINK THAT ANGELINA JOLIE GAVE ONE OF HER FINEST PERFORMANCES IN THIS MOVIE.SHE WAS TRUE TO CHARACTER AND MADE THIS MOVIE COME TO LIFE. I FEEL SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN AN OSCAR FOR THIS MOVIE. THE TRUE STORY OF THIS ONCE MODEL CAME TO LIFE WITH AN=GELINA'S PERFORMANCE. I WOULD RENT THIS MOVIE SEVERAL TIMES TO WATCH IT. IT WAS THAT GOOD!! BRAVO ANGELINA!!!

a tastefull but tragic biography (not for the fainthearted)

Tempting though it is to pretend otherwise (although to be honest I had never previously heard of Gia), the real reason I bought this DVD was to see more of Angelina Jolie after watching several of her action movies (Mr and Mrs Smith, Tomb Raider I and II, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow...). In the literal sense I was not dissapointed since Ms Jolie spends half the movie with no clothes on. But her performance is captivating for other (perhaps more worthy) reasons...On the downside the movie is rather depressing (but then that's no surprise given Jolie plays a frenetic superstar model who becomes a junky and dies of aids). Very few holes are barred (as well as the gratuitous nudity the movie also includes reasonably explicit lesbian love scenes, intravenous drug use, and so forth) so probably not one for the kids. Perhaps the most troubling aspect of the film for me is Gia's dysfunctional relationship with her mother (the movie hints that this was the driving force behind her self destructive behaviour).On the upside the characters are well drawn, particularly Jolie, her mother (who to the end remains in denial about her level of responsibility for her daughter's behaviour), and her confused girlfriend. The plot is well constructed and the scenes beautifully shot.

the best film ever

If you havent seen this film already you must buy it and watch it over and over again. Angelina Jolie play a model in need of help as at a young age her mother left her father for a rich man which left her feeling alone. Brought up in a house full of men GIA is sure to turn out a tom boy which she does. meeting a photographer at the age of 17 GIA soon turns into a fashion ikon beautiful and succesful her life was great. As all models in the 80's gia was no different she started taking cocaine to be in the in croud. One photoshoot she was asked to do one topless which she refused to do unless a woman who was working for the photographer was in with her they soon became lovers. So the number 1 model in the world was a bisexual cocaine addict. The film really had a twist ibn it when Gia went to her dealer for more cocaine but was no where to be seen but there was a nother crack head there and she was so desprate she took heroine which he offerd her instead. She took it soon passed out when she woke she was coverd in bruises which this drug addict did he also raped her. so now she had been raped beaten and given heroine with a dirty needle. she caught HIV she didnt know this at this point her girlfriend told he to choose the drugs or her she chose the drugs. soon after she was in rehab no longer beautiful noone wanted her to model for them when she got out she was cutting her self because she didnt have drugs she went back to her dealer which beat her because she used drugs off someone else. this is when she found out about the HIV it was now worse she had AIDS and was going to die she went to she her ex girlfriend but never told her she was going to die later that week she was in hospital dieing. When you watch this film you will see the brilliant acting from Angelina Jolie but i warn you this film is very sad at the end even i cried i cant get over how good her acting was and im not the only one as she won an oscar for it

Didn't work for me - dunno what about you

For me this movie didn't work.Altought Angelina does an excellent acting job, this movie runs veryslowly and doesn't catch you on the drama. I tried to watch to it twodifferent times to the 1st hour at least, but this mission has failed.The comments from her friends don't make too much sense, she doesn'tshow feelings at all, the conversations aren't interesting and it triesto show a sexual liberty that didn't exist in that time.I am only considering three starts because of her acting and for thesubject of the drama which wasn't very clichéd in 1998's as it istoday.

If you like Angelina Jolie then you will love this movie and have to see it. I just saw the movie for the first time last week and it is now one of my favorite movies! Its a true story based on the life of supermodelGia Carangi. This movie is great and I loved it!

excellent film

i thought this was one of the best films i have seen in a long time!Angelina Jolie play's the role very very well! its the kind of film iwill make my children watch in the future to make them aware of whatthat life style brings! i think the right people were picked for thismovie as the wrong people would have made the film seem slow and wouldhave left the audience feeling a bit cheated! Gia was played well,Angelina showed you that no matter how much money or fame you have youcan still be a very lonely person. and that no matter what happens inyour life everyone can suffer with depression no matter how yourbrought up, or how you live! well done excellent film!

A very well handled film

I mentioned in my rating of When Night is Falling that I had two favorite lesbian movies...I forgot to mention this one...This one was very well acted by Angelina Jolie, who seems very comfortable being with a girl...and it was refreshing to see that 3 fav films 'Gia' 'When Night is Falling' and 'Lost and Delirious'these ones are the intense ones I like

From a gay perspective, this is a must-see movie

While "Gia" certainly is a sobering look at the short life and tragic death of Gia Carangi, 80's supermodel, this movie also gets a five star rating for its depiction of the relationship between Gia and her lover Linda. (Unfortunately, the character Linda never really existed in real-life; this is an amalgamation of different relationships Gia had with women.) However, kudos must be given to Angelina Jolie and especially Kathleen Mitchell for the heat and chemistry these two put on the screen. Unlike many movies that depict both the affectional and sexual realtionships between two women, wherein the actresses look as though they are either sleep walking or don't have a clue how two women might interact with one another on an other-than- friends basis, these two actresses capture the whole picture. From the performance that shows up on screen, you could swear that it isn't just acting. They get every nuance, from eye contact to touch. However, you have to get the Unrated version, not the R rated version, to really get the whole picture. The Unrated version contains scenes that go much farther in explaining how Gia's relationship, even if fictional, is the emotional core of this movie. Especially fun is the extended version of Gia and Linda having dinner together when Gia moves back to Philadelphia. While the R version only gives us a peck on the lips at the dinner table, the unrated version contains several of what appear to be outtakes from filming, that are special because of the good humor that the two actresses seem to share in filming a great physical-but-with-clothes-on scene, several times. The initial scenes with Gia and Linda in the photography studio, as well as in bed for the first time, also give a more extended view of the heat between the two characters.If you're tired of politically correct lesbian movies featuring women who look like they need a bath and a good haircut, this is definitly one to rent. I'm only left with a couple of questions: Who is Kathleen Mitchell? Has she ever been in anything else? Angelina Jolie deserves the kudos she's gotten for portraying Gia, but Mitchell deserves a ton for bringing a real-live formerly heterosexual woman who meets someone that changes her mind to life with such a fine, nuanced performance.

Live fast, die young

Gia Carangi, was one of the first female supermodels, and one of the first to die of Aids. This movie, is so amazing. The story is so amazing and sad. Gia Goes to the Big Apple, hoping to find fame, and she does, but she finds what goes with fame. Drugs, love, and death. Angelina Jolie was so amazing in this movie. Highly Recommended.

Great biopic of one one of the world's prettiest models who died too soon, too young

GIA, in my opinion, is a great biopic about one of the world'sprettiest models who died too soon, too young. The performances weresmashing, the soundtrack was great, and the casting was perfect. Ithought that Gia (Angelina Jolie) looked very lovely in the clothingshe modeled in. It's just so sad that she got herself infected with theHIV virus and later died of AIDS. In conclusion, if you are a die-hardfan of Angelina Jolie or like biopics or films about modeling, I highlyrecommend this great biopic about one of the world's prettiest modelswho died too soon, too young. You're in for a real treat and a goodtime, so don't miss this one.

decent script...but the beautiful angelina makes the movie

This movie is truly worth seeing. Not so much because of great dialogueorplots, but simply because of entertainment value. This film is hot, inevery sense of the word. Even as a heterosexual female, I am deeplyentranced by the sexual scenes with Angelina Jolie. She is such a beauty.Only she could have done justice to the true Gia. When I saw it first ontelevision, I was glued to the set. The sexual scenes are explicit enoughto make one interested, but are not too gratuitous. This movie makes younotonly wide-eyed and drooling, but leaves you emotionally attached to thecharacters.

Emotional, well acted film.

This film effectivly shows how Gia started out happy with her life and everything even her low payed job and took the route accidentley of becoming a supermodel, while this film might seem overly pretentious if you havent seen it, it is a very good film but one you can get bored off if you have seen it a number of times. Angelina Jolie plays Gia and acts very well in the way her relationships prosper and fail with women and with men. There is also the effect she has on people in this film which is always there, the outline of the film is commentry on this attractive young girl who couldnt change despair (drug addiction) it's a film that really portrays life for alot of people and i think it does it well, i would recommened this to anyone but i can imagine not everybody finding this a likable film.

Probably my favorite TV movie (SPOILERS)

Sure, I guess if it's on HBO it isn't really *much* of a TV movie sincetheydon't have the limitations but I don't really care. Angelina does a topnotch job acting in this film, but I'm a pretty big fan so I guess I'mbiased. Gia was the first supermodel (I guess Janice Dickinson isstrokingher ego when she calls herself the first supermodel every time she goes onatalk show for her book, "No Lifeguard on Duty"), she was a lesbian and shedeveloped a heroin problem, which led her her death from AIDS at 26. It'sreally quite sad that when she just comes off of heroin she has full-blownAIDS. The acting is top-notch by everyone in this movie and I highlyrecommend it, though I just gave away the ending...9/10

Flawed, yet not bad morality play

I had never heard of Gia Carangi, so I don't know how much of this filmreflects the truth. Since Oliver Stone was not involved, maybe a lot of itdid. I had not seen any of Angelina Jolie's work before. I was impressed.Mercedes Ruehl was very good, as always. Stealing the show, however, wasElizabeth Mitchell. Her down home beauty and acting range was shown to greateffect. I am surprised she isn't more of a star. The movie's plot, the life of Gia Carangi reminded me a bit of films in thedays of the Hays Office, where negative behavior in a film always led tonegative consequences. Gia's self-indulgent behavior is yet another examplethat very young people should never achieve great success. They rarely canhandle it. The film was badly over-directed, too much of the color to black-and-whiteand back transitions, too many jumpy action transitions, etc. It's like afilm school project. It is also too long. The movie is worth a look, though, in spite of its flaws.
