FUN MOVIE

This review is from: George of the Jungle (DVD) I purchased this George of the Jungle movie for my 16 year old son. When he was three years old he watched this movie nonstop. Sometimes we had it on and when it was over we had to start it again. As a teenager he could not remember the movie so I purchased it to have a family movie night. It was a great family movie to watch with my teenagers, lots of quirky, lots of laughs.

Family fun

There are some genuinely funny moments here, as well as some awfulones. It will appeal to a wide age range, and is too silly to beconsidered purely an adult movie. As is often the case, accuracy goesout the window so we have Indian elephants with African lions withorang-utans etc etc, but some of the scenery is stunning.I always think Brendan Fraser is a better actor when he's not speakingtoo much - e.g. in Encino Man - and although dialogue is pretty limitedhere I still think it's too much for him! He looks the part but as soonas he opens his mouth .... well, it's a bit of a let-down. The talkingape (voiced by John Cleese) is a nice touch but very badly dubbed attimes. The CGI elephant is a step too far insofar as it isn't reallynecessary and doesn't fit with the real or animatronic creatures toowell. Also, everybody knows elephants can't jump! My favourite has tobe the monkey, although the lion is a close second and at times it'shard to tell what's real lion and what isn't.Thankfully they didn't go too far down the 'jungle man kicks ass in thecity' route and the bridge outing is mercifully short (I hate heights.)Mann, Taylor & Perry play the Stanhope clan perfectly, but thestereotypical English bad-guy doesn't impress. Nor does the unpleasantLyle. The essence of this show is in the animals and the scenery, andsome very funny if basic slapstick - although why they cut short thehilarious kung-fu gorillas scene is puzzling.A good family laugh-along movie, and most enjoyable as long as yourexpectations aren't too high.

Sorry to report, Disney really misses on this one!

I shudder to report just how corny this film is! What was formerly a cute TV series becomes, in this live-action version, an excuse for mugging and triteness. Though the supporting characters are worthily acted, George himself just does not come across. The main humor comes about with his repeated bashing into trees, and this is not quite enough to create a truly funny film. The color and effects are dazzling and sharp, and the DVD is a good production. The dog-like elephant is well depicted, and pretty funny. Just afraid the film is too slight to be worth a viewing.

A review from Mr. Entertainment Lover

Hee Hee Hee.... What a silly movie! Yes it's dumb and stupid! Still that's what makes it so funny. I have it in my video collection to watch on a day I'm bored. In this film George falls in love with a beautiful women named Ursala. However her nasty mother and her mean boyfriend won't allow it. From then on it's madness and comedy that will keep you laughing. John Cleese does an excellent job as an ape named Ape and Bredon Frasier is good as the bumbling George. This is a movie for the whole family!

Adults need adult humor in movies kids watch again and again

This movie was the first I took my son to watch in the theater, and now that it is on video, he watches it at least 6 times a week. There is no real violence in it, the human body is nothing to be ashamed of, and as "There's Something About Mary" proved, everyone needs a dose of stupidity at one time or another. The only problem I have with the movie is the use of the word "ass" in 2 lines, but kids learn that anyway. It's a great movie.

18-month-old got the joke

This review is from: George of the Jungle (DVD) Okay, this is one of my little boy's favorite movies. Granted he hasn't seen very many in his short life, but I can't believe how he took to it! It's second only to a free Jack Stone video that we got from the Lego company. I just had to share that he laughs every time it gets to the part where Ursula meets Ape for the first time, and terrified, she asks George "What does it want?!" and Ape replies exasperatedly, "IT wants ITS physician's desk reference, if you don't mind" and picks up a heavy tome to read. My son laughs and laughs while saying "Book!" I personally enjoy this movie very much, and I would much rather watch this one over and over than something like Barney!

Very cute and funny in that whimsical cartoon sense

I think this movie was a great depiction of the original cartoon. Thehumorused in the film is very much like what would be found in cartoons, and isdesigned to be taken that way. I mean, any show where the narrator andthecharacters actually interact should not be treated/rated the same way as,say, a movie with dirty-humor. This really seems like it was designedbothfor children and for adults who remember the original cartoon, and I feelthat it capticated these ideas very well and also captured the hearts ofteens who secretly love cartoons but didn't want to be caught in acartoon-ish movie theatre. I say that it was a great job all around, andthat the acting very accurately fit the characters as well, in thatcartoonish type way...a hard thing to do, but they pulled itoff.

A Jem of a movie

"George of the Jungle" is one of the most enjoyable movies I've everwatched. Usually when you turn comics or cartoons into live action somethinggoes wrong but 'Jungle' is unique in that it has been transformed withimmense success. This potentially cheesy movie made me laugh for its entire duration. TheNarrator (voiced by Keith Scott) is particularly hilarious. The bronzed andstone-bellied Brandon Frasier is delightful as George - a role similar tothe one he had in his prior film 'Encino Man'. The comic-looking Leslie Mannwith her girlish curls also masters a voice that conveys cartoonishqualities to the big screen and she is the perfect 'mate' to Frasier'sGeorge. This is a great movie because it is not just one character that you love, but it is the entire cast. You will come to hate the baddies and adore thegoodies. A lot of the comedy especially towards the end is slaps- stick butyou would expect nothing less from a Tarzan wannabe who swings into trees, cakes, boats, vans, cars and anything else that's in hispath. This is a great movie to watch with your family. It is light, funny and I'llguarantee you'll leave it with a smile on your face!!!

Great George of the Jungle movie

This movie was heart warming. And my mother loved it too. Great music for the scenes. Very likeable. If you havn't seen this movie than you should. Give it a try.

Not nearly as lame as I thought it'd be.

Actually, a lot of fun. Sure, it's lame. It's SUPPOSED to be lame. It pokes fun at itself for beinglame. ("George can't die -- he's the hero.") Don't expect great specialeffects, real Nature, a solid plot, or Oscar-caliber acting. This is mindcandy. In a lot of ways, the plot is like Titanic -- nice new boy steals girl awayfrom sleezebag fiancee she's just marrying to please her mother. But sinceUrsula ditches Lyle before taking up with George, there's none of the moralbankruptcy that made Titanic such a stinker. And, of course, nobody issupposed to take George of the Jungle seriously anyway.

Thomas Haden Church

In this movie, the best character has to be Lyle, played by Thomas HadenChurch. His nastiness makes him the perfect villain. Best bit is when heis walking with the natives and says "I'll go first because I'm the bestlooking", before tripping and landing face down in elephantmanure!!

2013-06-12 18:36:28

Completely wretched

The only reason I watched this movie is because I think that Brendan Fraser is a good actor. But upon seeing it I saw just how awful a movie can get. There is not one funny part in the movie. It is totally moronic and unfunny.

What a Pathetic Film!

This film was a total waste of time. I almost walked out of the movie theater since the film seemed to go on forever. The humor, if you can call it that, was hard to endure. Brendan Fraser was ridiculous, he has NO acting ability. Good looks can not compensate for intelligence. The rest of the cast only made things worse. Don't waste your time or money on this video- it's dreadful!

The next day, Lyle decides to find the Great White ApewithUrsela when suddenly they run into a lion. Lyle runs back forhelp, leaving Ursela cornered. Suddenly, George swung to the rescue.Actuallyfirst he swung into a tree, but then he chased the lion off andswungUrsela to safety. They crash into another tree, knockingUrselaunconscious. George takes her to his treehouse where he lives withhisfriend, an ape named Ape. Ape could talk. When Ursela comes to,Georgeintroduces her to his giant, peanut-loving poochie, Shep theelephant. The two go search for Lyle but Ursela soon gives up the search andjustenjoys George's company. Ape tries to teach George about the femaleofhis species. Lyle and the Swahili tour guides set out to find Ursela.Lylesoon catches a glimpse of George and decides to scare him off withhiscigarette lighter gun, but the guides switch it with a real gun. MaxandThor try to tranquilize Ape but George races to the rescue just asLyleshoots him. The aftermath: Lyle, Max and Thor go to jail whileUrselareturns to America with George. She takes him to her home townofSan Fransisco. She dresses him in human clothes and leaves himhomealone while going to explain to her parents why she isn't marryingLyleanymore. George decided to explore this new jungle. He then spottedthebiggest rope bridge in the world: The Golden Gate bridge. He evencameto the aid of a stranded parachuter! Soon the day of Ursela'sengagementparty arrived. Her parents, Arthur and Beatrice, didn't take much ofaliking to George, especially when he swung through the wedding cakeandslammed into the side of the catering truck. Beatrice pulledGeorgeaside and said he was forbidden to see Ursela again. Back atUrsela'sapartment, George was feeling distraught. Back in Africa, Max andThorgot out of jail and went to find Ape and tranquilized him. ApesentTookie the messenger toucan to go find George. Tookie soonreachesGeorge and he heads to Africa and races to Ape's rescue. Max and Thor try getting Ape to Ape River, but they took afakepath that circled Ape Mountain six times before returning to thetreehouse. Ape chatted along the way while Thor quarreled with thenarrator.Suddenly George swung to the rescue. Max and Thor beat him up buthesoon fights back. Ursela then swings to the rescue. But suddenlyLyleappears. He escaped from jail and joined a cult. He's also becomeamail-order minister so he could marry people and he was determinedtomarry Ursela. His men apprehended George while he made for theriverwith Ursela. Shep took care of the bad guys while George performedthebiggest swing in jungle history to save Ursela. It goes fine untilhecrashes into a tree but in the process is able to procure UrselawhileLyle inadvertantly marries himself to a female ape. Well, GeorgeandUrsela were married and lived happily ever after. As for Ape, hegothis own show in Las Vegas! Pretty good film. Brendan Fraser was a good George. I wasalittle hard on Fraser in my Monkeybone review so I take back whatIsaid about him and Chris Kattan. Leslie Mann was good too. Ihearthere will be a George of the Jungle 2 but not with the sameactors. The kids will love this movie as much as the adults. Keith Scottisthe narrator and he sounds alot like William Conrad! Anyway, IrecommendGeorge of the Jungle! The kids will love it and so willyou!-

George is a very funny movie

Really, i don't understand because the rating of this movie is low. In mycountry, this movie bring on the theatre thousands. I give to this movierating 8. "George of the Jungle" is a adaptation of the cartoon that has thesame name. Really, i prefer a thousand times the movie than the cartoon. This movie it's very funny, Brendan Frasier is hilarious played George alsohis co-star Leslie is lovely. Also, we don't forget the George's friends,Ape and Elephant that are responsible for very good moments in thismovie. There are few movies that i laugh so many times as "George of the Jungle"."George of the Jungle" is a very funny movie.

Hilarity runs riot

This is a great slapstick comedy film (and to think I used to thinkHollywood had forgotten how to do these!); and I haven't even seen theoriginal cartoon.Brendan Frazer has such an amazing sense of comic timing it's uncanny. He can really deliver the most outrageous situations with totallydeadpan mock seriousness, which is the clue how to make these storieswork. You have to be convinced the characters totally believe in whatthey're doing - otherwise nobody will. In fact I have a saying that youknow you're watching a great comic performance when you get theimpression that the actors know they're in a comedy, while thecharacters think they're in a drama. I also agree the Narrator is oneof the highlights of this story, and adds a lot to the fun.I think Thomas Haden Church is actually slightly under-appreciated inthis movie; making a comic villain work is rather tough, especially ina G-rated movie. You don't want to come on too strong and be acompletely gut-wrenching psycho (though I know a lot of you sadists outthere would prefer that), but you still have to come across as alegitimate threat.(Spoiler warning)My all-time favorite scene from this movie is the climactic leap Georgedoes. Brendan Frazer's delivery is spot-on. The dialog goes somethinglike; "George is about to make the biggest leap in the history of theworld. George knows it is going to hurt a great deal, but George mustdo it." Brendan then gives an extremely pained wince at the camera. That's pure comic gold.

About as fun as it should have been.

My Take: Pure mindlessness, but young 'uns will be amused. I purposely avoided GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE many times, with thoughts thatthe film will be loved by children and loathed by anyone above itsage-limit. But when I finally saw the film, I'm pleased to say I wasright about one thing, wrong about another. GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE wasindeed a movie made for kids, and they'll loved it, yet somehow, I wassurprised how decent the film was. I think that, to possibly enjoy thefilm's low-key charm is either to lower your expectations or at least, try to take a long with you the part of your mind that's still 8-yearsold. It's amateurish at every opportunity, but occasionally amusing. Brendan Fraser is acting like a total idiot, but is actuallyappropriate as the character of George, a man raised by apes in theuncharted jungles of Africa, so said by the film's narrator which isprobably the film's funniest character. Leslie Mann plays Ursula, awoman from San Francisco who joins her fiancée Lyle (Thomas HadenChurch) in his perilous adventure across African wilderness. But don'tworry kids, nobody dies in this movie. They just get really badboo-boo's.Part of the cast is funny, but not throughout the movie's running time.Usually, the movie relies on silly, immature slapsticks to attract itsaudiences. Unfortunately, only the kids will get a real kick out ofthem. Still, there are some funny moments in this film, mostly comingfrom the said narrator as well as John Cleese, offering his voice tothe Ape called Ape. Rating: **1/2 out of 5.

Great Movie!

I absolutely LOVE this movie. George of the Jungle is similar to the movie Tarzan, just with actors as opposed to animations. The movie starts out describing how George (the Tarzan of this movie) was lost from his family as a baby in the jungle after a plane crash. Here we get a little insight of the beginning of Tarzan's life as he grows up in the wild, and we ran about his extreme talents, such as crashing into trees :) After we are introduced to George, you are introduced to Ursula, coming to Africa partially for an expedition, and partially to get away from her fiancé. But, just as she arrives, her fiancé arrives also. How will Ursula and George meet? Sorry, not giving that away, you have to watch the movie! This movie was incredibly funny, and I recommend it to all ages because everyone will get a laugh out of this movie. 5 Stars!
