This film does has an funny premise but too bad, this movie is not as funny as it seems.

Henry Perkins (Chevy Chase) is been working at a fruit wax company formany years and he doesn't seem to be appreciate by his boss (RobertLoggia). In this day, Henry is also celebrating his birthday. Which hiswife (Penelope Ann Miller) wants to planning a surprise birthday partyfor her husband. But when Henry accidentally switched his briefcasewith a stranger from the subway. Herny finds $5 million on thebriefcase that looks like his. Since Henry realizes quickly thesituation of this problem. Since the mysterious guy, he accidentallyswitch his briefcase has his identity in it. Henry wants to leave thecountry with his struggling artist wife to Europe but the Perkins' onlyfriends (Christopher McDonald and Alex Meneses) shows up his birthdayparty. But there's more to come... when Henry has problems with asleazy corrupted police detective (Armand Assante), a taxi driver (GuyTorry) who doesn't like to be waiting, a clumsy police detective (KevinSussman), a very rich kinky woman named MM. Virginia (Rebecca Wisocky)who feels Henry's wife has some talent and the European mob boss knownas Mr. Big (Zoltan Butuc) & his crew is searching for his briefcase.Directed by Leslie Grief made an watchable but hardly funny farce. There's a few good laughs here but not much of it. The movie seems tohave energy from his cast but the script also written by the directorand Harry Basil is quite poor. The movie feels rushed, gags are notwell executed and it is also badly filmed. Grief's wasted a capablegood cast. I do believe Chase could be really funny actor but i think,it works best when he is in the hands of a good comedic filmmaker likeHarold Ramis or John Landis. Ann Miller's performance is reallyirritating here. Since it's based on a stage play of the same title byRay Cooney. I am sure, the stage play works much better than thismisfired picture. It's certainly a nice try and it's more of a Curiofilm than entertainment. Too bad. (* ½/*****).

Chevy Chase is AWFULLLLLL

Chevy Chase Fans? Are you kidding? His last decent gig was when he leftSNL and that made the show better! 1975 for you sports fans...WatchMurray in Quick Change (1990) for a great funny movie. Maybe I'll grantyou Foul Play w/Goldie Hawn, but that was 1978... come on Chevy, explain how anyone even sends you a script these days, Chase and Millerhave the screen chemistry of a fly drawn to my Great Dane's dogdroppings. Speaking of Miller she is not well liked in the industrybecause she needs a personality transplant and is mean to the crew.Armand Assante....what happened? Stick to mob movies man...hes's greatin American Gangster and holds his own against Denzel.

A Funny Return for Chase

Funny Money is an off beat comedy about an accountant named Henry Perkins played by Chevy Chase. His wife is an artist and she's played by Penelope Ann Miller, this isn't the funniest Chase comedy ever but it has enough twists and funny jokes to get by. The supporting cast is funny, let by Chritopher McDonald. Funny Money is a movie that makes for a fun night on the couch.

stupid

Had to leave the theater. Bad acting plus a stupid plot. It is the worst film I have ever.......They should be ashamed for ever releasing such a stupid film.

Homage to the 30's screwball comedy.

Don't listen to the Amazon.com review of this movie.I don't own this movie but I'm watching it on cable right now and just came here to purchase. If you know anything about the old screwball comedies of the 30's where manic paced things happen all at once within one household for the whole picture, you will see this is a well done homage to that genre.Surprisingly, this is one of Chevy Chase's funniest movies since he stopped doing drugs.

Didn't even deserve 1 star

If you want a taste of how bad this film is check out it's last song which plays through the closing credits. It's the worst song in a film I've ever heard, the worst singing I've ever heard on screen (even on American Idol!), the most cliched tropical island theme, and the most moronic words to a song ever made! No kidding, this is the worst movie I've ever seen! A couple of teenagers with camcorders could have come up with a better movie! This movie assaults your senses in every way! It's an adaptation of a British play that has no appeal on the big screen. None! Not that I have any love for British comedy but it had to have been better on the stage. The plot is the time worn moronic plot of someone finding alot of money. After that it's not worth going into the plot for even if you can figure it out the acting is so bad it's not worth sitting through the movie. Chevy Chase has the main role and he's pathetic. They could have gotten a schizophrenic from the local homeless shelter to give a more inspiring performance. It's like Chevy had a lobotomy after National Lampoon's Vacation (which had some hysterical bits) and he's like 3 seconds out of sync with the rest of the world. Did anyone ever see his talk show that got cancelled after a few episodes? Point made! He must have put his own money into this because I can't see any investors dumb enough to bet on a movie with him in a lead role. And I'm not just bashing Chevy. I loved him in SNL, and I loved NL's Vacation. Maybe that is why I am so disappointed most of his other performances have been so moronic. Anyway, the cast has some well known stars such as Armand Assante and Penelope Miller, but they can't help this awful film. This film was made in Romania, for which reason I can only assume was to save money. The film opened at 4 screens in America and made like $2900 total box office receipts. It made over $30,000 in box office receipts in Europe, probably because it had some big names, was a British invention, and word of mouth travels slower across Europe. However, it made a total of 19 million overall, which I assume were cable tv rights and dvd sales. So, maybe they broke even, which goes to show that if you get a few big names in a movie, no matter how bad the movie is, you can sell it to cable and dvd and make some money. What amazed me was that it was the most popular film at the Sarasota Film Festival! That is truly mind boggling! The only thing I can think is that it was the only film AT the Sarasota Film Festival! Geesh, if you like this movie I can think of a lot of really bad B movies you might like as well!

Better British

Some things just sound better with a British accent, and that's the problem with this American adaptation of the farcical play by Ray Cooney. Obviously intended for the British stage and audience, the plot is about the complications that arise when the lead character Henry Perkins (an ancient looking Chevy Chase) accidentally switches briefcases with a tough-looking guy on the train, and discovers that he is the new custodian of a large and undoubtedly illegal fortune in notes and bearer bonds.Perkins decides to take the money and run, but his young wife (Penelope Ann Miller) remains unconvinced. The arrival of an undercover cop (Armand Assante), and a comedian moonlighting as a cab driver (or vice versa), and then their friends Vic and Betty, followed by another police officer, and then even more minor characters, leads to an amazing and absolutely befuddling sequence of variable identities, assumption-leaping and confusion that could only come from the pen of funnyman Cooney. What the film lacked was the dry and bawdy (yet always hysterically funny) British comedic inflections and delivery, which made some of the truly great moments fall rather flat. The cast does their best given the Americanization of the plot, but this would have been a heck of a movie with a British cast. This version - 3.5 starsAmanda Richards, August 18, 2007

Un-funny Money

In January of 2007 this movie debuted in limited release on fourscreens, pulled in less than $2000, and hopefully those few peopledemanded a refund. The director and the cast should have paniced sometime during filmingwhen it became clear that the movie had only one joke, not amusing thefirst time around, but repeated over and over in every scene until Ifinally had to give up and switch away to a re-run of a Jeopardy game.I liked Chevy Chase early in his career in TV and film, but his talentshave dissipated even more quickly than his hair. He walks thru thisfilm with no flair or style whatsoever. This has been all too common insome of his later efforts.A sad waste of time for everyone involved, especially the viewer.

A funny mature comedy movie

3 of 5 stars for the mature comedy movie Funny Money. Surprising to see Chevy Chase as a mature man when I remember him as a young man on SNL. The comedy in this movie is mostly verbal and situational rather than comedy movements (of which Chase is so well known). The plot is rather simple: an accidential exchange of identical briefcases leaves Chase with $$$$$$ rather than a sandwitch. Alot of comedy about this discovery between Chase, his wife and some family friends. More comedy about those who lost the money and their search to find it. And when the two groups find each other ... oh yeah, funny. Again, this is not a slap-stick comedy. It is well written with great dialog, situations and events. This is an easy on the brain movie and is entertaining. I do recommend it.

Funny Money is an Absolute Riot!!!

Finally Chevy Chase is up to his old self in Funny Money!! If you likedCaddy Shack or Christmas Vacation, I'm sure you will love this one. Itis an absolute riot don't miss it! This movie has an excellent cast anda very funny plot so GO SEE IT!! I think that Armand Assante and ChrisMcdonald were very funny in this as well, they really make it fun andenjoyable. Also Robert Loggia played Chevys boss and he is justhilarious. It has been a long time since we have Chevy in the leadingrole and its good to see in back in front. He has always been afavorite of mine and he still is very very funny!I hope they put thismovie in more theaters to make it easier for everyone to go see, I wantto take my whole family to see it so hopefully it will open in moreplaces soon.

Film adaptation of play.

Adapted from the stage version, this comedy brings back the hilarity that Chevy Chase is well known for. When an ordinary family man who works at a plastic fruit factory switches brief cases with a mobster (accidentally), things get complicated fast! He's trying to get his reluctant wife on a plane, pay off a nosy detective, and keep a house full of guests in the dark about the truth - all on his birthday!Chrissy K. McVay - Author

Comedic Genius

This is a fantastic film! One of the funniest films I have seen since"Nothing to Lose (1997)". Chevy Chase stars as a down on his luck manworking at a wax fruit company, where his idea was passed over tenyears before, and the new "hotshot" is receiving the credit. His name is Henry Perkins, hes married, he works for a living, and hehas just found $1 million dollars. What would you do with that muchmoney? Certainly, you would pay off bills, but not Henry. His wife hasjust made a deal with an art manager, and they are on the brink ofseparation. At the party, which is for henry's birthday, there is total chaos. Acop who watched Henry's moves from where he found the money until hegot home is asking questions. Henry and his wife's friends are there tohave fun, and Henry has called a cab to leave. Its a great movie, and you will find yourself laughing at every turn.

Plain awful

I wasted 97 minutes of my life watching this crap. I only watched itbecause I am auditioning for the play at my local amateur theater. I amnow truly re-considering going to the audition! This film was simplyunfunny, not 1 laugh was had by me. I reckon Chevy Chase and all othercast members would want to remove this film from their resume. I thinkthis carries the tradition of stage plays not transferring to film.Shame, it had a good cast on paper. Now I worry that if the movie isthis unfunny that the play may also be unfunny. I se that the originalauthor, Ray Cooney, was also a producer for the movie. He must have somany regrets now!

Surprisingly - Gut-busting Humor

I must admit I was pleasantly surprised by this film - True, the plot is weak and at times too predictable. But on the other hand, I found this movie to be clever in its humor and fast-paced with comical shtick that holds one attention. It's like a long chase scene filmed in a tight location - everyone keeps falling over everyone else. The odd-ball characters and how they mix together goes over the top - they play their parts to a tee - Chevy's Swiss-watch accountant finally getting his freedom, the perverted boss, the drunken wife bordering on sheer hysteria, etc. If you liked "A Fish Called Wanda", you'll like this one, too.

Chevy Chase really does put the funny in Funny Money!

This review is from: Funny Money (DVD) I was lucky enough to see this film shown before the public at the Sarasota Film Festival. I'm glad I got to see it with Chevy Chase in the audience. It was worth it. This movie is very funny! It is great to see Chevy Chase back on the screen. The film is well done for a low budget and full of animated characters that will have you laughing hysterically!

From people think that the sexual jokes are the best thing to make the bourgeoisie laugh !

The return of (Chevy Chase)? Well, not the best return ever. The thingis he looks so old, his comedy isn't that fresh, but the man managed tobe that desperate middle-class dreamer who wants to have a lavishvacation. I wanted him to do the thing that every usual middle-classman dreams of : saying No to his boss, being the hero of his life. Butno such luck. They just gave him the opportunity to lie, hustle, be anoutlaw and live endless boldly sexual – all fake – positions along withhis lavish vacation. All in all it was empty return and not thathilarious. It's one farcical night, not great though. While I loved taking placein one night, and a character like the annoying stand-up comedian/parttime taxi driver, I just hated that all the laughs were sexual andnothing else; so I felt ridiculousness or rather easiness. And when itcontinued to the end I was bored and sick. Some movie makers think thatthe best thing to make the bourgeoisie laugh is by giving them sexjokes, as if that is Everything You Always Wanted to Talk About ButWere Afraid to ! These ones did it with abundance. Fairly some momentswere clever, but not that many.Casting (Armand Assante) in a comedy was tempting factor. Buteventually I was hoaxed, because he was exploited in non-creative way.(Assante) comes from many movies where he played scary evil men, evenscary good men ! In this movie that wasn't used to produce laughs, thematerial given to him was one-note and low, and his performance wasweak (in many scenes he seemed drunk to me !). I hated that the wife does nothing but to drink. Further, some sexualjokes were so ugly (kissing the statues!). Simply as a movie based onfunny characters and misunderstanding, it didn't reach to the max.Although the pace is good, but in the same time you may feel theweariness due to the absence of real events, outrageous twists, oranything else jokes about penis, erection, being homosexual,…etc !Unlike many reviews, I see that it worked. But just as a light, verylight, movie. Or a feast for the ones who adore the sexual jokes!

Possibly a good play material but with this results wouldn't even cover cheap TV movie.

I was happy to see some new material from Chevy; I know thatoriginality is almost abstract thing in 2008. but still, what isoffered here is more then insulting to anyone.Every single idea and solution that carries this silly story is notonly overstretched from every single corner possible; but gonecompletely out of the roof with idiotism of the worst kind.Did studio had some spare rolls of film on their hands? This storywould fit more as a play, particularly when you consider that almostentire movie takes place in one single room! I doubt even a change ofthe scene would be necessary because such miserable results are foundhere.Nothing is funny here. Everyone from the otherwise charming casting(with unbearable euphoria)is trying to support this idiocy - butnothing, I mean nothing could help this story. How and Why was Chevyeven involved with this, save alone how would anyone even sleep atnight knowing that people would watch this as finished results... isbeyond my grasp! This movie (did I just say movie?) is not even bad, this movie does not exist.

Not so funny

I am a fan of Chevy Chase and he is good in this movie. Miller is good too. All the acting is good. The problem with the movie is plot. It is his birthday, he finds the money, his wife gets "discovered" as an artist, and the wife is having a surprised birthday party for him. So many small things to wrong in the movie to keep the certain characters in the plot, it makes the whole thing uncomfortable. It is like a "Fawlty Towers" episode on steroids without the laughs. There a few chuckles in the movie, but it just doesn't justify the frenetic pacing. Penelope does the best she can with a strange role. She plays a depressed drunk for most of the movie. Chevy hits his part just right, but he isn't given much to work with. Even before I read that it was a movie made from a play, I knew it was a movie made from a play. It had a claustrophobic feel. Most of the action takes place within the house. The movie frustrated me more than made me laugh. It just was not funny.
