This review is from: From Paris with Love (DVD) The DVD was in the condition advertised. Thank You.The movie was, I think, less spectacular than advertised by Hollywood, but it was an action packed adventure. However, I felt the ending was anticipated and that subtracted from the movie's effectiveness, but again, if you are looking for an action packed adventure this is your movie.
When A friend of mine put this movie in i didn't recognize the title atall, which is mostly a bad sign if you keep half an eye on the marketand this one has John Travolta in it. But who am I to judge? From the first 15 minutes i didn't know where to put the movie and howit will develop further on i also predicted some kind of: that CIARookie is gonna get in big fat trouble, his GF gonna be held ransom etcetc. But i got it totally wrong. When we get to meet John Travoltaalias the bald Motherf****r who doesn't give a f***, we also get thefirst cliché thrown at us, French Airport Police sucks and are allmorons who need to be put in place. The irony would be that an Americancitizen complains about the security system in french airports whilethe U.S. has the most ridiculous Saftety Checks in the whole wide worldmaking it a dreading horror for every half brown colored dude to enterthe U.S.The movie goes on and on, the rookie complaining about unorthodoxmeasures Knox (JT) takes, e.g. killing every foreigner who has noimportant role (like leading them to the hideout to kill him none theless, an old guy serving tea or to do it with Knox). Every of thoseChinese/Pakistan/Arabics seem to have an Uzi under his belt and Cocaineis raining from the ceiling. God Bless America! Between the massacresthe movie has some light moments and absurd dialogs (but funny) betweenthe two of them but not really enough to make you like Knox any more.At this point I called out that the rookie would sure have to battlehis bat s*** crazy partner later on in a good showdown (maybe somechess included) but i was wrong again and the movie took the easy wayout, America is threatened to be blown up by suicide bombers whereverthey leave the US, not even Love can conquer that America hate and soour Rookie has to rightful duty to kill his girlfriend, boom Headshot, but no hurt feelings, a second later he is already joking with his oldpal Knoxy. The End killed it for me, I thoughts: "Wow, 5 Min Showdownand the movie is over no sudden story turn, he kills her and thats itand gets promised a promotion" The Action Scenes were good, but i can't overlook the huge logic flawsand the constant cliché dishing out. Just to name some:Bomb Warningreaching the embassy no one cares the same goes for the female U.S.diplomat (hell shes drives past a burning car wreck and get told ofterrorists are at the conference yet she gets mad for the delay andwants somebody's head) Why the girlfriend didn't just plain fake an IDfor the conference but instead had to live a long time with that guypretending to fall in love, why the surveillance stuff in hisapartment? Why didn't they get wind of his CIA linking? Where did Knoxget all his information from, he seems to know every time what willhappen next In what country its OK to kill near hundred citizenswithout being questioned or taken into custody? Why he had to smuggle agun into the country when every car he enters is stacked with them, heck even a RPG is lying at hand. - Why is the cocaine stuffed into theceiling, why would a drug dealer do that? - Why is the Pakistan killinghimself with the gun of the rookie? Quintessence: USA good , Rest of the world hates USA for it and wantsto kill them, women cant be trusted and are easily lured into Muslimbeliefs. CIA investigation is mostly killing dudes and blowing stuffup. Saving French Cops from Booby traps is not the way of a CIA Agentfor they would only ask stupid questions about all the dead guys. Inthey eat a Burger and laugh their as off how good everything went. The story had many opportunities to take an interesting course andwould have been way more appealing if the good guy had taken hisgirlfriends side and they had to escape that bad ass or if they hadKnox turn evil and let the rookie hunt him down... so many wastedpotential.
This review is from: From Paris with Love (DVD) This movie is awesome! John Travolta is a great actor in this action packed movie. This is a must see!
Awesome movie with good performances by the leadingcharacters, especially Travolta. I think this was a perfect characterfor him; it was a pure and absolute pleasure watching him having somuch fun! Unexpected turns, actions and dry humor in just the rightamount. Go and see it. This movie is a must see for people who likeactions, foreign scenery and Pulp Fiction type of direction. And to top it off, you can come here to IMDb and read the reviews fromall the terrorist-sympathizers, "boohoo, dark-skinned people andmuslims are shown as bad guys, terrorists and criminals". Well, havinglived in different parts of Europe and working within law enforcement,I'll say it's not very far from the truth. In fact, it's likely to bespot on.Well worth watching!
Part of me can't believe that I'm giving this movie an 8. Travolta iseating scenery. I wasn't quite sure what was going on at times. Thatmustache on Rhys Meyers is too goofy. Yet another part of me iswondering if I should even give it more than 8 as this movie was agreat joy ride. Other than a few scenes to lay the groundwork (whichare interesting on their own), this movie straps you in and like a wildroller coaster it's over before you had a chance to scream.Yes, Travolta is eating scenery, but, like Mae West, when he's good,he's good; but when he's bad he's even better!?!? The track record thatLuc Besson has built up in this genre (let's call it 'non-sensicalnon-stop action flick') with all of those Transporter movies isincredible. Unlike Michael Bay, who turns your attention away from themovie with all of the overkill and grandiosity, Besson keeps it short, simple and tight. A quick karate chop to the neck or a bullet to thehead is worth nine explosions.I'm not saying I'd give this a 10 after spending $30 on a night outwith the Mrs, but for a few bucks for a fun family DVD night from yourlocal DVD center, it's a blast.
FROM Paris WITH LOVE is an odd title for this 93 minutes ofslaughtering in the name of smoking out Terrorists. But then it is anodd movie, too, one that fans of John Travolta's screen chewing sidewill love. There is so little story that it doesn't need summary. Twoguys - one Special OPs wannabe James Reece (Jonathan Rhys Meyers withan American accent) is assigned to partner with an infamous spy calledCharlie Wax (John Travolta in top edgy comedic form) to first uncover acocaine ring of Chinese (they accomplish this by killing everyone) andthen the two jump around on buildings and stairwells and car chases andexplosions to uncover planned terrorist attack from the Pakistanis -again accomplished by killing everyone. There is a bit of twist in therelationship of Reece and his beautiful girlfriend Caroline (KasiaSmutniak) that adds a bit of story to the otherwise bullet-infestedgoings- on, but best that be not revealed as it is the only part of thefilm that resembles story. The reason this creation by writers Luc Beeson and Adi Hasak works inthe hands of director Pierre Morel lies completely in the entertainmentprovided by Travolta - and the straight guy image of Rhys Meyers. Theirbanter does little to make us get into the characters, but they doprovide a vaudeville-like dance with weapons peppered with some funnyset-ups and dialog to make this movie entertaining. At least everyoneappreciates the purpose of making the movie is not a serious one andwatching it can be a fairly good evening's past time. Grady Harp
This action-thriller had great balance for its genre and an appropriatefor once set-up in character development for the relational element ofthis movie that was of particular importance. The balance of drama, action, mystery, and sprinklings of humor made for a nicely editing, paced movie that started slow but kept building to a nice simmer. JohnTravolta brings some of his Pulp Fiction (1994), French's McDonald'sBig Mac back to the screen once again. The action duo in this movie hasa biting chemistry that has a discordant sparkle that is refreshing. While in some ways the plot is pretty straight forward with a decenttwist, the movie remained solidly on course with plenty of action, except the lazily designed chase scene with evenly placed cars onceagain (as found in a multitude of chase scene movies), and has anemotionally potent climax by the end of the movie. This is an aboveaverage action-thriller that is worth seeing.
before I know or either I see the movie (I never see the poster), Ithink that it might be a super romantic movie, but seeing the poster Iburied up my mind about it deep deep under the iron sea, because, OMG,this one overflowed by blood scenes, shooting each other, chasing, anddrugs, weapons, terrorist, and all the things you could see on anyaction movies... humph..., good, I fooled by the title and gosh, it washottie Jonathan-Rhys-Meyers!!! mwahahah I would love this movie and infact I love this movie =D you know, John Travolta acted damn good as asecret agent, I remember his words "if you're a secret agent, then actlike a secret agent" well, I think Johathan-Rhys-Meyers way better be amodel or something than a secret agent and of course he does haha.yeah, it's pretty sad that in the almost ends of this movie he (JRM)has to deal with his fiancée, oh sad . . . as the movie goes, I neverexpect that JRM's fiancée, Caroline was a terrorist you know!? amazing!he lived with her for times and he dint realize at all that somethingis wrong about his fiancée, till John Travolta told him the real factof her, and the story began in a damn hard way, you know, you mustchoose, your love or your country? I enjoyed every chasing scenes, youwill love these guys, because sometimes somehow the way secret agentsfulfill their job were amazing, they're so easy to kill people (oftheir target with reasons and responsibilities of course) I meant notthe passion of killing people, but how they use their weapons, strategy, time, chance and stuff like that, I love the way secret agentwork =) cool man! because however, although the danger and the riskthey would get are big, but they can manage that and done their jobwell. oh yeah, I almost forget my review, after that, he's in a missionto kill his own fiancée, on this must be very hard decision, like allin a sudden you have to kill your bf/gf, I believe you wouldn't dothat, but he must, because that's his job and by this, he can save morelife , and that's what he should. well, after he found his fiancée worea jacket of bomb inside her veiled clothes, in US ambassador building,he know that the one can stop this all was himself, he started to talkwith her, even on that time, his fiancée is about to trigger the bombto blow up that place, he's trying to cancel her to do that, he talksabout love or something, I saw his fiancée is kind of trembling and herunshakable conviction seemed to break but she's such a firm woman, in aless than 3 second, she's totally almost to trigger the bomb, but BANG!!! he, (JRM), shoot her right on her head, she fell onto the floor,John Travolta caught her and overcame the bomb and yep, it's over . . .wow, I adore his loyalty to his country and his fiancée, because afterthe show is ended, he still keep his pictures with her, just as areminder, how sweet hahaha =D from this movie, you and me might learnabout love, sometimes love can make us blind, so don't until youblinded by love, although I know, it supposed to be hard for us... andyep, if you got assignment, finish it well and be loyal at everythingyou believe, of course in a good way one, I meant don't be loyal atcrimes or something bad like that hehehe... it's quite good movie, asnot it will makes you think over something as not twice =D before youdo that, because sometimes, something Unpredictable will come into yourlife, be ready!
This movie was a lot better than I had originally expected. It isliterally filled to the brim with action, gun-play, fight scenes, andcomedy. James Reese is an aide to the U.S. Ambassador in France, and healso has a side job as a low-level operative for the CIA. When Reesegets his first assignment, he is forced to work with Charlie Wax. (Iabsolutely loved John Travolta's performance as the character of Wax,because he's funny, and a new style of a loose cannon action hero)Reese and Wax must stop a suicide bomber from killing everyone at asummit. If you love action and suspense, I highly recommend FROM ParisWITH LOVE!!!
Wildly inventive and a whole lot of fun, 'From Paris with Love' is aroller-coaster ride from start to end-credits. The delectable (and boy,is he delicious?) Jonathan Rhys Myers plays straight man to JohnTravolta's manic, off-the-wall character. The script is funny and hassome great throwaway lines ('Wax on, Wax off', 'Ka-fucking-BOOM!') ,including a sly reference to Pulp Fiction that movie-buffs will love!John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys myers have so much fun with theirrespective roles that the plot is actually irrelevant to the running, shooting and exploderising that is going on. Don' t think about it,just sit back and enjoy!
I seldom write reviews, but this was a great movie both me and my wife thought was great. Time flies while you are watching it.
This review is from: From Paris with Love (DVD) Young CIA agent James Reece who has a cushy day job but dreams of an exciting life in the field. When the agency offers him his first big-time assignment, James must team with crazed lone wolf Charlie Wax to stop a terrorist bombing plot. Although James is initially in way over his head, he soon realizes that he needs to trust Charlie if he wants to live his dream and save his own life, because the bad guys not only want to cause damage to the city, but want James killed. This movie is two hours of entertainment. It's John Travolta like you have never seen him before. The story itself is not particularly noteworthy. But there is lots of action as Travolta shows everyone who's boss in this action-packed special effects extravaganza. Also there is non-stop violence with Travolta leading the way. If you like movies with stories that feature non-stop violence, then this movie is for you.
I absolutely do not agree with any of the negative reviews. I received this as a gift and can only say that it exceeded my expectations. Travolta surprised, and for a guy that has done as much as he has, that is saying a great deal. This is a five star movie, each of the actors is solid as a rock, the ending is a complete surprise, and overall I found the story line, the scripting, and the action scenes to be totally coherent and extremely well-executed.
i would cry watching that fantastic ,impressive, imaginary Americansuper hero killing all those purely evil bad guys without losing hissense of humor. And in the middle of all that violence ,dozens of peoplebeing killed it seems that our director here forgot some thing pleasesir would you - kindly - explain to your audience what all that for ?.If you wanted to say that Asian , Muslims , Pakistanis and.... - someone reminds me who else has not been murdered here - if you wanted tosay that all those people are just and so simply ( terrorists )and haveto be ungracefully eliminated so why didn't you write an article in anews paper instead of nauseating us with that ( lets make a movie toget money ) attitude. But i will never forget to say that he make theright choice picking up that beautiful model for that silly wasting oftime movie and that i feel sorry for the pulp fiction's super star.
This review is from: From Paris with Love [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) This is movie is just plain fun. Travolta and Rhys-Meyers are a great team-up. Travolta is an over-the top, larger-than-life super agent, Rhys-Meyers is an ambassador's aide who wants to break into field operations. They're teamed up to stop a terrorist plot in Paris. The story is fun, the action is a blast to watch, and the character interaction during the developing partnership is fun if not very deep. Overall, it's well worth watching--more than once if you're the type that can watch movies more than once.
The opening of From Paris With Love tells you pretty much all you needto know about the film. The music is that of someone browsing radiostations on a car stereo, which settles just as the black screenbecomes blazing Parisian spring sun, as we move out of a tunnelfollowing a large car on the banks of the Seine, in a rough but realtracking shot. It's momentarily exhilarating... until it suddenly cutsto the visual equivalent of motion sickness, with excessively shakyvistas of the Eiffel Tower (etc.) which are simply unwatchable. And so is the film, an idea of panache undermined by another ill-conceived one chasing it from behind. Everything's like this, script, overcooked bodycount-action sequences, the inevitable (Gallic)misjudgement of what constitutes appropriate pathos...Luckily Travolta is on great form, rolling out his action thug-entertainer to greater effect than in Pelham 123 (or BrokenArrow/Swordfish, for that matter). Rhys Myers looks great through acamera lens but still - still - has this issue of consistency toovercome, measured one moment, hyperactively angry the next. He shouldhave watched Ethan Hawke in Training Day for this role.Like Taken, there's plenty of drive and action. Also like Taken thecontrivances don't quite work - the buddy-some denouement being thetoecurlingest of them all. Still the action works hand in hand with thedrama, more or less, and there's a sensibly unobtrusive but JohnPowell- like persistent score from David Buckley (who's clearly havingfun with variations on the song 'Close To You' that Travolta mangles ina moment of levity during a car chase). Fun, disposable, 6/10
This movie was very enjoyable. Director Luc Besson who has also done The Professional,Transporter 1 - 3,Fifth Element,Taken and the District 13 and other french sub titled movies just keeps the action moving along. If your an action fan pick this one up. Looks and sounds excellent on a surround sound set up. Seems like John Travolta was funny and seems like he's having fun as the loose cannon agent knocking down the baddies.
I love me some R-rated Travolta. In these type of roles, John Travolta tends to run wild, curse like there's no tomorrow, and generally act insane in a fun way. I didn't like The Taking of Pelham 123 that much, but Travolta cursing was certainly a highlight of that movie. And in this movie, he certainly doesn't disappoint. Not only does he curse, but he's bald, he's batcrap crazy AND he's does some great action in this movie! What's not to love about this film? Oh yeah, Jonathan Rhys Meyers.Essentially, most everything relating to Jonathan Rhys Meyers is deadweight. Except, there were a few scenes involving cocaine which were funny. Whether these were intentional, along with a few other scenes in the movie, I don't know, but I got a kick out of them. Problem 1 for Jonathan Rhys Meyers. The movie is from his point of view. Travolta is more interesting, and everytime they cut away from Travolta to Meyers, you're like, "Hey! Hey! No! You get back to Travolta! We don't want to see your face anymore!" Personally, I would have given the script a rewrite, write Jonathan Rhys Meyers out, and give his translation skills to Travolta. Granted, the end of the movie does lean on Jonathan Rhys Meyers heavily, but hey, it can be re-written, and nothing will be lost. Problem 2 for Jonathan Rhys Meyers. He doesn't really do all that much, except for complain much of the time. It's not till a twist in the story is given that he starts manning up, and even then, you have to wait for the last five minutes before his character gets interesting. As for that twist, I could see it coming from a mile away. As soon as they have a scene on the roof, I knew that character wasn't going to make it through the end of the movie, and there was no good to be found in her vicinity.Overall, it's a good rental if you like the finer points of Travolta acting crazy, and there's plenty of decent action to go around, but Jonathan Rhys Meyers is a paper weight that kills any rewatchability. Plus, Jonathan Rhys Meyers is British, and his character talks in an American accent the whole movie. What? Also note, he's not very good at the American accent. Why? He's too British. Well, I suppose he's Irish, but you get the point. Also, I have a problem with the title of the film. Why "From Paris With Love?" What is its significance with the film? It just makes me think of "From Russia with Love!"
Knew the French girlfriend was up to something. No big surprise there.Stopped buying into that arrangement after the first couple of minutesof the film. The younger guy was cute and all, but no, knew she was atraitor. It was like a B movie story. Always like John Travolta nomatter what hair style he has or doesn't, beard works. I guess he gothanded a crap load of money and took it to the bank. Good for him.Movie wasn't worth the price of admission. I know Travolta must getmovie role offers everyday but why take this one? Liam Nielson did thatmovie Taken, but that was a good movie and it had a lot of action.Travolta just did his thing and figured what do I care, I'll look cooleven if the movie comes out like crap and I'll get paid whatever Iwant. If that's what he thought he was right. The movie was crap.Travolta had the fun one-liners all to himself. The other moments inthe movie, the ones that weren't action and were there to be revealingor great just weren't, like with the quarter pounder with cheese at thebench and then again at the end of the movie, that was so weak, thatwas their moment or call back to something earlier in the movie andthat's what they had for us, along with the big moment of the Frenchgirlfriend being crooked, which was the big moment I knew was coming inthe first act. I'm disappointed in movies that could be something orbetter yet in people who be involved in movies that are better and theypay for or become a part of something at this level. It's a B moviethat cost a lot of money and had a lot of advertising. Rent Taken.
"From Paris With Love" is a John Travolta film that is not a great action film, but solid and entertaining in its own right.Jonathan Rhys-Meyers is a low-level CIA functionary who is paired with an agency assassin played by Travolta. Immediately, Rhys-Meyers is in danger to his eyeballs as Travolta gets him into one predicament after the other whilw pursuing a terrorist cell planning an assassination. The movie has Rhys-Meyers as the calm, rational one with Travolta being the crazed death-wish one. Their partnership is pretty standard buddy film fare, but they make it work and are not off-putting. Each plays his role with enough balance that the movie doesn't seem to go off-track.From Paris With Love is a great popcorn movie - nothing more, nothing less...
