Pleasantly surprised at the chemistry and comedy

Without specific spoilers I'll tell you this: the end isn't a shocker, however I was pleasantly surprised over all.A friend's girl brought this over for movie night, and I'm alwaysinterested in something new. I thought the story line was cute and welllaid out. The movie moves along quickly and provides some good comedy.Patricia Clarkson as the loopy, liberal mom is always good for agiggle. What surprised me was the chemistry between Mila and Justin. They played off of each other very well matching energies and providinga very believable non-couple.As others have mentioned this is similar to a handful of movies thathave come out recently in basic plot, no dating- just sex. To be honestI'm really not surprised the current 20-30 set is the result of thedivorces of the 80's and 90's. Which - in my circle - has led to morethan a few commitment shy adults who wouldn't mind this set-up.The movie is true to current culture in that aspect and offers a funride while telling what turns out to be a very sweet story.

Just like No Strings Attached but slightly different and still horrible.

Spoilers ahead! So when I first heard of this movie I got REALLY confused. Because amovie JUST LIKE THIS was JUST released it was called No StringsAttached. Wow it's official: Hollywood HAS RUN OUT OF IDEAS! They areso shameless about it now even. They don't even try to space them apartanymore to try and trick people! Like the Hulk reboots. At least theyhad YEARS separation. And people found THAT outrageous! These moviescame out back to back! Here let me list the similarities between thesetwo movies:Both have the same plot: a male and female agree to be "fu(& buddies" Both end up the same way: the male and female end up wanting more Both have an actress that was in Black Swan; NSA: Natalie Portman FwB:Mila Kunis Both have the male lead that was more famous in the 90's; NSA: AshtonKutcher (That 70's Show actor) FwB: Justin Timberlake (N*sync singer) Both have outrageous, BETTER, more interesting supportingactors/characters; NSA: the girl with the glasses FwB: Justin's gayfriend. Both have these people be at the top of their game and rich! NSA: thegirl is a doctor and the guy I forgot but he was pretty well off FwB:The girl has a cushy job, and the guy is getting money thrown at him! This last similarity brings me to my next point; the movie wasunrealistic. This movie is taking place in a post-recession world. There are flash mobs, new technology, references to current things. YETin this movie companies are BEGGING people to work for them!? WTF!?THERE ARE NO JOBS! This was the MOST INSULTING DISGUSTING THING aboutthis piece of (r@p movie! They will hire some #0re to FLY to LA toCONVINCE a guy WITH HIS OWN company to work for them. Doesn't that meanthat they have to pay him more? It's for GQ magazine sure, but a maghas THAT much money!? And for what!? This guy does not even do his job!Knows nothing as proved by his gay friends question's like "What fontdid you use?" This guys 'brilliant' response; "I don't know. Times newroman?" Most of the time he is fooling around with the girl and doingother random $#!t!!!! It disgusts me that Hollywood does not get it!Life is not a fairy tale! People don't and CAN'T live these lives. Thatapartment Justin's character can supposedly afford (IN NEW YORK NOLESS!) even the rich struggle to get! WOW!The only difference between these movies is the person that wants theirrelationship to mean more. In NSA it's the guy that wants more and thegirl that doesn't "get it." In FwB it's the girl that wants more andthe guy does not "get it."Also I hated how this movie tried to be so hipster. Like it was tryingto be so "cool." As if they were "better than" these movies they weremaking fun of. At this point pretty much ANY other romantic comedy isbetter than this piece of crap! Even NSA had the girl with the glasses- so funny! While this movie's stand out character; the gay friend, wasbarely even in the movie! Also the ending was a cop out they did notadmit that they were wrong! Cynical to the end! Wow what idiots, what apointless movie!

Movie was a BORE!!!

Thought "No Strings Attached" was a better movie that this one! JT's acting is terrible since you can tell he is acting. Mila was stunning but her character was a bit over the top. Every step of the movie was predictable and totally unrealistic.! Waste of money!

First half, funny......second half, giant chick flick cliché' trap.

After seeing that pile of garbage that is "No Strings Attached", why ongod's green earth would i see a movie that harbors the same concept.Well, ideas can be crapped on. Case in point, "Batman and Robin". Justbecause Joel Schumaker took a dump on my childhood doesn't mean theidea of Batman is still in the toilet. But can an idea as simple asthis be somehow salvaged? I must admit, the movie did start off quietentertaining. Both characters are likable, the dialog is witty and attimes very funny, and the cameos are great. Needless to say, thedirection this movie was taking was VERY different from "No ButtholesAttached". They made the sex portion of the film both hilarious andvery sexy. The guys will love watching Mila Kunis strut around in nextto nothing, and the girls will love the constant shots of Timberlake'sass. Combine that with the quirky awkward situations that we allencounter with sex, and you got a pretty humorous concept. However, around the half way point of this film, it took a turn that iwas hoping would never come. And that's what happens with the majorityof these chick flick traps, they trick you with their humor, and theyturn all emotional. And that's exactly what happened with this movie.I mean come on, how can a film that's really witty and funny turn allserious in a blink of an eye? I mean, one second i'm laughing, and thenext, i'm not forced to deal with the sad situation with Timberlake'sfather having Alzheimer's. Then it trickles down even more when Kunisoverhears Timberlake's feelings about her, and of course, the moviegets all emotional and turned into "No Poop Bombs Attached".By this point of the movie, i gave up all hope. I already knew what wascoming. I was bored, and i actually took a phone call in the theater, which is something i never, and i do mean NEVER do.Bottom Line.....like i already said before, the first half was funny, witty and clever. And the second half is a giant chick flick cliché'trap. I didn't hear one laugh or chuckle in the theater for theremaining hour of the film. But the ladies will probably love it.

Not great

This review is from: Friends with Benefits (DVD) Not a very good movie. Predictable & lame plot. We had to force ourselves to continue watching. Acting was not very good and was not believable.

laugh outloud

This review is from: Friends with Benefits (DVD) I really enjoyed this. I think Timberlake is so funny and good in this film. Mia was great too, they absolutely compliment each other. Woody Harrelson was funny, he played the role perfectly, as he always does. Thanks

No benefits to movie goer.

There is no chemistry between the leads. One problem is that Justin Timberlake is a dullard. Even Mila Kunis can't overcome his deadweight and a poor screen play. The director and writers tried to overcome the poor screenplay by numerous boring sex scenes and unnecessary foul-mouth language. Thus the R-rating. I found my self longing for the days of interminable chase scenes and computed-generated armies. They would be more interesting. At best, this is a movie for those in the early teens, it is certainly not for adults. It is a terrible movie, and it takes a lot to make me unhappy with a popcorn movie.

A funny sexy movie with lots of laughs

I thought this would be a chick flick but I watched it with my wife to be nice. I loved it! It is a sexy and funny story with a life lesson from dad included. The lead actress, Mila Kunis, is a cute doll and plays the role to perfection. Justin Timberlake does his usual great job playing the funny guy. It is like one of his Saturday Night Live skits but it is the length of a movie. This is a really good movie and a good love story about finding the right one. Did I say funny? I laughed throughout the entire movie. It even has touching moments regarding family love and caring for an elder father. Watch it, you will enjoy it!

Brilliant Acting; Very Funny!

For me, the track record of the 2011 comedy releases did not seem great, so I was a bit nervous about watching this movie. That being said, I was completely wrong and surprised by this film. Starring Justin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, and Woody Harrelson, "Friends With Benefits" is, well, exactly about what it sounds. Timberlake, upon moving to New York to take a new job, has as his only friend Kunis, who lured him to New York for the job to begin with. As the two develop as friends, so does their relationship develop. While the ending may be predictable, the storyline of the friendship, a character with Alzheimer's, and the "realness" of the film lend reality to comedy.ACTING: AJustin Timberlake, Mila Kunis, and Woody Harrelson all shine in this film, with Timberlake and Kunis taking charge of the lead roles and producing a sense of positive interaction and giving believability to the plot and the humor. Harrelson, as a side character (Timberlake's gay co-worker/friend), is flamboyantly gay and unafraid to show it: creating many entertaining moments in his own right.PLOT: B+Sure, the plot is believable. Most plots of romantic comedies are. This film, for me, was different in that it was also about Timberlake's film-dad suffering from Alzheimers, about Kunis' mommy-issues, and about the development of the characters as adults. This is far from a rote comedy along the lines of every other script, making it enjoyable!COMEDY: AAt points, I couldn't stop laughing, particularly in the interaction in the bedroom between Kunis and Timberlake as well as due to Harrelson's character. To be sure, the humor is crude and sexual most of the time, but you could probably guess that from the title.FINAL REVIEW: BUY ITThis film is definitely one to purchase. I will be doing so as soon as it leaves theaters. It was more than a romantic comedy, for me, just as it was more than a raunchy, sexual comedy. If you like Kunis and Timberlake, they are at the top of their games in this film. Don't hesitate to buy, but be aware that it is a very sexual movie!

MLDinTN 2012-05-20 03:52:35

unimaginative story line

There have been several movies come out within the past few years withthis same plot idea. And that's the main problem, this movie was sopredictable. Basically a guy and girl decide to have a physicalrelationship with no emotional attachment. And of course, they bothfall for each other at the end.In this case, it's Justin Timberlake, Dylan and Mila Kunis, Jamie, whomdecide to start getting it on every chance they get, but no dating isinvolved. Woody Harrelson is thrown in for a little comedy, as Dylan'sgay co-worker. But nothing new is really offered by this movie.FINAL VERDICT: If you are a big Justin or Mila fan, I'm sure you'llwant to see it, but otherwise skip it.

Great movie overall

This review is from: Friends with Benefits (+ UltraViolet Digital Copy) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray) This was a very cute movie with great cameos. Justin and Mila played off each other very well. A couple scenes had laugh-out-loud quotes. Very enjoyable.

Chick-Flick

This is definitely a "chick-flick". Watching the trailer I was thinkingit was a comedy; but mark my words - it's a chick-flick.The majority of the humor in this movie only appeals to women, and thestory line as well.Furthermore this is one of the most predictable movies I've seen... Andit seriously insults your intelligence by spelling out every singlething going on, stuff that you would understand automatically, if youjust have a shred of intelligence. As a man, I would rate this movie 3 out of 10 stars.. But I realize Iwas not the intended audience of this movie, and it seemed that all ofthe women in the theater had a great time, laughing and what not. Basedon that I think this movie hits home in regards to its intendedaudience. 7 out of 10 stars it is.

iheart_ny 2012-05-18 02:41:22

At least ten times better than No Strings Attached

This has been a magical summer for movies. A lot of movies that I wasreally looking forward to, have turned out to be lousy. However, I'veseen a lot of movies that I expected to be awful, but ended up beingreally good. Thus, "Friends With Benefits". Romantic comedies arealways awful for me. I love them, but they make me feel like crap. Thereason why this is, is because most of them are dishonest, and make youfeel like only in the movies, things work out in love. "Friends WithBenefits" is refreshingly honest, kind of sad, yet hopelesslyoptimistic. Its dialogue is fast and quick, kind of "Juno"-esque. Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake are both coming off Oscar roles.Justin Timberlake was surprisingly good in "The Social Network", as wasKunis in "Black Swan". Maybe it was a fluke that both of them were sogood in those movies, but this is the kind of movie they belong in.Their characters, Dylan and Jamie, have personalities, andcharacteristics that mesh with each other in a really awesome way, which doesn't come very often in romantic comedies. The story, as for most romantic comedies, isn't surprising at all. It'stwo people who are coming out of bad relationships, who meet in aclassic cute romantic comedy way, and decide that relationships don'twork out, and to remain "friends with benefits", or friends who(constantly) have sex. As you could imagine, this doesn't work out theway they had hoped. There was a similar movie released this January, with Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher called "No Strings Attached",which, clearly will be referenced in most, if not all reviews for"Friends With Benefits". I, admittedly, didn't hate that movie. Butit's a piece of dreck compared to this one. It's a typical hour-and-forty-five minute romantic comedy. However,it's kind of this generation's "When Harry Met Sally". It's "When DylanMet Jamie". The two leads are so great with each other, one the yin tothe other's yang. You can tell that they would be conceivable as a realcouple. They aren't the perfect, immediately compatible couple thatusually headlines a movie such as this. Justin Timberlake keeps provingthat he's a better actor than a lot of pop stars. He's insanely likablein this movie. Mila Kunis had a smaller, haunting kind of role in"Black Swan", where I thought she was above average. She's reallyallowed to shine in this one, bringing life to a character that couldhave been much less. The attitude of this movie is sometimes gritty, always quick, witty, and urban. It makes good use of the time it'sgiven. It acknowledges the ridiculous romantic comedies that it couldhave been. Jamie and her friend, at one point, walk by a poster forKatherine Heigl's "The Ugly Truth", and says "Shut up, Katherine Heigl! You stupid liar!". A fake in-movie-movie, with Rashida Jones and JasonSegel, is meant to emphasize how ridiculous most romantic comedies are.Great stuff.Another thing this one has that "No Strings Attached" didn't have is agreat supporting cast. Patricia Clarkson plays Jamie's mother, a hippielush who is really damn funny. Woody Harrelson also does a good job asDylan's unapologetically bold and hilarious gay boss. He gets kudos fornot making a gay character a stereotype. Richard Jenkins plays Dylan'sAlzheimer's stricken father, and Jenna Elfman plays his sister. Theyadd to the quick and zippy feel of the movie. Cameos by Emma Stone andAndy Samberg are always welcome, too. While some probably won't like this one as much as I did, I liked allof its characters. I felt like each character was well-developed andinteresting. The quick writing is what makes it better than a lot ofsimilar movies, but when everything in it is mashed together, the wholepackage is very good. I look forward to watching it again.Grade: A-

Friends with benefits?

I liked this movie, i liked Mila in it, but i thought Justin needs to practice more of his acting skills, i just think he could have been better in this movie. It was sweet and funny. I just find it interesting that both Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman were in movies that dealt with the same storyline and they were both in Black Swan together. Maybe the writers in hollywood should start thinking of different stories and not recycle the same thing. (Example: Chasing Liberty and First Daughter)I liked No Strings Attached more than i liked this movie, but i will probably watch this movie again

Just another forgettably formulaic romantic comedy

This film is about a top magazine executive and a beautiful headhunterbeing best friends, with added benefits of being purely physicalwithout being emotional."Friends with Benefits" looks promising in the beginning. It's fastpaced and does not drag around. It has loads of eye candies from thetwo attractive leads. However, things start to deteriorate in themiddle of the film. It descends into being just another forgettablyformulaic romantic comedy. It drags on and on, trying to get seriouswith the emotional side and worst of all it delivers no eye candy. Ijust got bored. Woody Harrelson's attempt of acting a gay character isnot so convincing either. I keep thinking that it is a role perfect forStanley Tucci.

2012-05-16 14:19:08

Avoid this film like the plague

I was actually embarrassed for the headline actors, Justin Timberlakeand Mila Kunis. The material was not good nor were the jokes. JustinTimberlake was bad enough to begin, as usual. Mila Kunis is normallybetter than this. I guess she was playing down to her material andco-star. Either way the acting was horrible as was the plot and thedirection. A negative trifecta. If there were any redeeming factors tothe film it was the supporting actors. All of which I felt did anexcellent job with the material they had to work. Patricia Clarkson,Woody Harrelson, Richard Jenkins and even Jenna Elfman, respectively. The film was predictable which is OK in this genre. Just a sloppyproject in every facet. Save your time and bypass this one.

Hellmant 2012-05-16 09:43:20

Timberlake just doesn't have the skills to hold his own with someone like Kunis!

'FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS': Two and a Half Stars (Out of Five) Another movie about friends trying to stay friends while involving sexin their relationship and hoping not to complicate things. This onefeatures yet another talented and high caliber actress (Mila Kunis)coming off a critically praised film ('BLACK SWAN'), in a criticallyacclaimed performance, and is paired in a lowbrow 'f--- buddy' filmwith a much less talented actor (Justin Timberlake). This one isslightly better than Kunis's 'BLACK SWAN' costar's ('NO STRINGSATTACHED'), despite lacking the presence of the great Natalie Portman.Kunis is great in the film and does have a certain amount of chemistrywith the lightweight Timberlake but the movie as a whole is still verypredictable and extremely light on laughs.Kunis and Timberlake play Jamie and Dylan, Jamie is an ExecutiveRecruiter for a New York based job agency and Dylan is an art directorfor a company in Los Angeles. Both have had their fair share of failedrelationships and are ready to give up on love all together. When Jamietries to recruit Dylan for a GQ art directing job in New York City thetwo immediately hit it off. Dylan takes the job and the two quicklybecome best friends. One day while watching a romantic comedy together(starring Jason Segel and Rashida Jones) the two come up with the ideaof adding sex to their relationship without any of it's romanticentanglements. This of course leads to many complications especiallywhen they begin falling for each other. The film is directed by Will Gluck (who also directed the criticallyacclaimed hit 'EASY A' in 2010, and it's star Emma Stone has a cameo inthis film) and it was written by Gluck, Keith Merryman, David A. Newmanand Harley Peyton. It's adequately directed and the relationship aspectof the film is believable. The problem with the film is it's just notfunny. Kunis has by far the most laughs and brings a lot of energy toher performance but Timberlake almost sucks all the energy out of thefilm at the same time. His line delivery is pretty bad and he justdoesn't make a good leading man. He's been fine is supporting comedicperformances but when he has to play it straight he just doesn't havethe skills to hold his own with someone like Kunis. Like I said the twodo have some chemistry together but it's not enough to really make thefilm work.Watch our movie review show 'MOVIE TALK' at:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KzFGXKpG30

me gusto...

When discussing who would go to the cinema to see this movie everyonewarned me it was a "chick flick". The truth is that it may be so, butcame out pleasantly surprised to find that addresses issues thatcouples often do not treat each other and that also includes hard todeal with Alzheimer's disease, in a humorous way and that in passingleaves a very useful and true advice about not distrust our heart, andif we're wrong ... what the hell! I liked the movie, has some reallyfunny and the performances of the supporting characters, like Lorna,Annie, Mr Harper, and especially Tommy ... every appearance that I hadwas great. my humble opinion.

Good Movie

This was a good movie... Enjoyable. Although not sure how it was rated PG considering the plot etc. But it was good for a laugh with the traditional happy ending.
