We have taken some photos of "Fried Green Tomatoes". They represent actual movie quality.
The wonderful lead performances in this well-made film from John Avnetmake "Fried Green Tomatos" the enjoyable, and popular, film that it is.Mary Stuart Masterson plays well the part of Idgie Threadgood, arebellious and independent young Southern girl from Alabama, 1930.Kathy Bates is wonderfully hilarious as frustrated 90's housewifeEvelyn Couch, and Jessica Tandy and Mary-Louise Parker are quite goodin supporting roles. The plot has many sidelines but it is mostly aboutthe strong friendship of women, two of whom grew up in the depressionera.By no means wonderful cinema, but a very enjoyable movie.Saturdy, May 9, 1992 - Hoyts Forest Hill Chase
This movie is 4 stars, Kathy plays a great part (as usual) wonderful movie! Great buy!
This film is a tale of friendship between a middle aged housewife witha failing marriage, and a lonely old age home resident.Though the plot is touching, I think t has the wrong emphasis. The plotabout Kathy Bates marriage is more interesting compared to Ruth andIdgie. The portrayal of Evelyn's failing marriage and her being bulliedby almost everyone around her is excellent. Her character reallyconnects to me, and I would have loved to see her more. In fact, Ithink this plot could have been expanded to become a separate film.I also think the plot about Ruth and Idgie occupy too much screen time.It is too long and not engaging enough, and it bores me. It would bebetter to see more of Evelyn, and her transformation through herfriendship with Ninny. In addition, the two plots are too thinlyconnected to each other until the very end. It was as if I was watchingtwo separate films at the same time. By the time the twist is revealed,I have already lost patience.
This is such a onderful movie. Based on the award winning novel by Fannie Flagg, this movie is about a troubled woman Evelyn Couch, who makes friends with a lady in a local nursing home, and listens to stories about her family. Many of which are shown in the film. Some parts are funny like when Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) rear-ends the Volkswagen six times. Some parts are sad like when Buddy gets hit by a train. Some are even scary like when the KKK arrives and takes Ruth's baby. But I really get a big laugh out of the joke about the lake being carried over to Georgia.
Every time I have seen "Fried green tomatoes" so far (about 5 times bynow),I could not marvel enough at the beautiful plot and characters. ThomasNewman (well-known for his fabulous score for "American Beauty") givesanother example of his art: the music at the beginning of the film mirrorsexactly the slight melancholy of this movie. I am sure you will enjoy thedeeply moving story. Unbedingt ausleihen - rent it!
I loved this movie when it first came out, and 19 years later the feeling is still the same. I loved the scene where Evelyn is in her carr at the Winn Dixie and the car with the 2 young, model snob types take the space from her. As they're walking into the store, she confrotns them and they tell her, "Face it lady, we're younger and faster!" Towanda emerges and she starts to ran the back end of their car with hers. The scene continues when they run out and ask her what's wrong with her. She tell them, "Face it girls, I'm older and have more insurance!" Who hasn't wanted to do that? Who hasn't felt that way at least ocne in their life?! The scene also continues into this hilarious scene with Jessica Tandy. This movie is a classic and worth every penny. And if you can't afford the movie, rent it! This movie is great!
This movie was so good, I have seen it countless times and every time Iwatch every second of it. Some people think this movie was about twowomen in love, maybe it was, but the real story line is finding insomeone the love that we all yearn to feel. Many have said horriblethings about Idgie and Ruths love but I think its more than that, itsknowing that you have found your soul mate, whether it is a same sex oropposite sex soul mate. Don't focus on something that is not reallyimportant in this movie because that is not what the director and thewriters want you to focus on, its the meaning of life and how life goeson. I suggest those who have not read the book to read asap. It reallyis wonderful
While I love this film, and have seen it a dozen times at least, thematuring of my mind since the first time I saw it as a teen in 1991,havemade me take a second look at this stunningly acted film about love, friendship, devotion and racial issues in a multiple decade look atwomen'sroles in society.Anyone who went to college where I did would see that Idgy from herchildhood is the sterotypical Lesbian. She does not like to weardressesand prefers a man's dress even as a youngster. As she ages, and as Ruthbefriends her, she is tantalized by a kiss Ruth gives her on the cheekatthe swimming hole and so devastated by Ruth's wedding that she does notevenattend but instead drives hours to Valdosta, Georgia to look onhurtfullyfrom the woods at Ruth carried in her new home in her wedding dress. As the film progresses and Ruth is rescued from her abusive relationshipthetwo start a cafe called Whistle Stop Cafe in Whistle Stop, Alabama. Ifonewatches carefully they'll see that the two live together in a house nearthecafe. In one poignant moment, the two women are talking over coffeelate atnight in the cafe when Ruth says that she feels bad that Idgy may feelsheneeds to stay and care for Ruth and Buddy Threadgoode Jr. (Buddy isRuth'sson but has Idgy's last name?!) Ruth says that if it weren't for sheandBuddy, Idgy may "settle down" Idgy dramatically replies "I am as settledasI am ever going to be" and "I don't want you to move out" The clincherwasthe image they showed shortly after that scene of Ruth in a femininedressand Idgy in shorts and a shirt and tie, holding each other and smiling. Idgy never married or dated and Ruth never remarried.Everyone must come to their own conclusion but mine is two women in the1930's who enjoy a healthy, loving lesbian relationship with thedisguise ofbusiness partners in a time and place when different anything race, religionor creed, was just not tolerated or accepted.
Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) subsists on Krispy Kreme donuts and lowself-esteem. Her fat slug of a husband is oblivious to the attentionshe so desperately craves; he would rather plop in front of the set towatch his baseball game, and wolf down the wonderful meals shedutifully prepares. Soon, Evelyn befriends Mrs. Threadgoode, anoctogenarian woman living her last days at a retirement home. Throughtheir friendship, two beautiful stories begin to unravelÂone takesplace in 1930s Alabama, and one in the present. Through thisparallel-storytelling technique, Evelyn comes to realize the beauty oflove and develops a healthy perseverance towards personal fulfillment. If you haven't seen this little movie, by all means sit a spell andshare it with your best friends. There is nothing more soothing thanexperiencing the sights and sounds of a bygone country summer: rockingslowly inside screened-in porches, the song of crickets and katydids, eating southern-fried chicken, and drinking ice-cold sarsaparilla sodaright out of the bottle. Don't be fooled, though. The film also has itsshare of heavy-handed yet serious drama, so be prepared for a trulyunique Sunday morning 'barbecue.' Actors Bates and Tandy are fantastic as, respectively, Evelyn and Mrs.Threadgoode. Bates is especially endearing as Evelyn, and TandyÂasusualÂturns in an engagingly eccentric role as the seemingly dotty oldbiddy with a sensitive heart and a sweet-filling her character is awalking historical-journal ready to be opened and read. Masterson and Parker, however, lack the sufficient chops to match thesuperior-quality of the older actresses' thespian-talent.Somehow, Masterson and Parker (playing Depression Era fictionalbest-friends) are mismatched withÂin essenceÂtheir symbolic (1991)contemporaries. The overall narrative faintly resembles something written by AliceWalker, were Walker an Anglo-Saxon instead of a black novelist.FYI: Author/screenwriter/actress Fannie Flagg was a regular player onthe TV game show Match Game.
My mind turns to mush when I write about movies that are simplyperfect. And since this movie was an absolute masterpiece of garbage, my mind isunprecedentedly sharp.I heard about this movie after watching a Martha Stewart show in whichshe said to add tomatoes to a stew to make it taste good. But when Iopened up my refrigerator and saw that all of my tomatoes were rottenand all green, I thought "eww, maybe I should throw these away..." Butthen Martha Stewart said "just make sure the tomatoes aren't green, like the movie Fried Green Tomatoes".So when I heard that, I thought "hmm, so maybe there is a use for2-year old tomatoes" ... and I quickly went out to rent this movie. Tomy amazement and utter disgust, I found out that this movie hadlittle-to-nothing to do with my old tomatoes. I took some paper and apen to write down the recipe, but I seriously didn't get anything outof it.After the movie finished, I went home and thought "well, maybe therecipe just means that I am supposed to fry the tomato" ... so I wentout and bought a deep frier from Bed, Bath, and Beyond for like $50 andput my tomato in there for about 10 minutes ... when it was finished, the skin was all hanging off of it and it smelled like a wet dog. But Ifigured that it must taste amazing if they made an entire movie basedupon it. Needless to say, I was in the hospital for a week.So overall, this movie is very misleading and I didn't appreciate that. But I give it a 2 for effort.
This review is from: Fried Green Tomatoes (Extended Collector's Edition) (DVD) The video arrived within 4 days of my order, in mint condition. I love the friendships in this movie. The one thing that doesn't do anything for me are all of the scenes with the marriage group. Otherwise is a great movie.

This review is from: Fried Green Tomatoes (Extended Collector's Edition) (DVD) Love this movie its one you will watch again because it is such a great story.
I first saw this film in the theater and was completely taken with it. It is one of the most perfect works of the American cinema. Let me explain why, first the 4 main actresses in this film are each spectacular in their own way. Kathy Bates makes her character's transformation completely believable and lovable. Jessica Tandy is perfect with her wispy smiles and her dancing eyes. She is a real charmer in this film. Mary Louise Parker performs with grace and integrity and creates a real life character out of one that could have been overly sweet. The real star though is Mary Stuart Masterson who completely becomes Idgie. It was the role of her career and she is amazing. The movie is visually stunning and captures the atmosphere of the old south brilliantly. The viewer is completely immersed in the world of Whistle Stop. The script is poignant, funny, sad and most of all genuine. When you view this movie you believe in the realness of the characters and the setting. There is not a single wrong note in this movie. This isn't just a great story of friendship but also a fantastic mystery that has many twists and turns. It is a movie that is full of heart and one that you will find yourself watching again and again.
The story, the emotions and the peopleall feel so familiar that it makeswatching the movie a real joy. This movie reaches in and touchesyour soul and makes you smile within and without. I do recommend thatyou watch this one with family and lovedones and share the magic of a story.
They don't make em like this anymore. The acting was brilliant and thestory captivated you about the old South. The film reminded me of aSaturday morning in the park. Wonderfully refreshing and light while atthe same time caked with deep meaning. I enjoyed Jessica Tandy'sperformance. In fact, the entire cast was brilliant. Hollywood needs tomake more of these types of films. To be honest, I've lost my love forfilms about 3 years ago. Haven't watched too many since and I'm 40years old. Films today remind me of fast food - no effort was made atall in making them. Hopefully, they'll hire executives in Hollywoodwith something more than a high school education.
I am a woman, and this "women's movie" sickened me. "Fried Green Tomatoes"tends to be admired by radical feminists because the women in it areportrayed as loving, sensitive, mutually supportive, and oppressed bymen--and the men in it are portrayed, of course, as evil, stupid, or both.It is a travesty. The ending is nothing short of filth--a plot twist that is inhuman andmonstrous, but which fans of the movie seem to regard as uplifting. Thatsays it all.
I have always loved this movie. The DVD experience added more. The interviews and commentary are fascinating, flipping through all of the options on this DVD kept me entertained for most of last Sunday!
