During childhood, Fred Claus suffered his younger brother Nicks saintliness. Jump ahead Fred is a fast-talking, genial but self-centered guy in Chicago looking for 50,000 to open an off-track-betting shop. When one scam goes awry, he calls Nick at the North Pole for a loan Nick will give him the money only if Fred comes up to help a few days with the Christmas rush. After his girlfriend dumps him, Fred heads north. Santas facing an audit from an efficiency expert, and its not pleasant. Freds job is to review charts and determine whos naughty and whos nice. Is there any fraternal feeling left, can either learn from the other, and what about Santa getting fired?
Vince Vaughn's famously rude Wedding Crasher gets macho with Ludacris as a m-igitalized feisty Santa elf, while huddling over the pint-sized urinals in the john with another, to clue him about North Pole dirty dancing and romance.
This movie is a just plain fun holiday movie whose humor reminded me ofTim Allen's Santa Clause. Vince Vaughn will have you laughing in yourseat while at the same time empathizing with his story and feelingsorry for him. Besides Fred Claus, the other actors/actressescomplement each other well, and throughout the story everyone's storyis accounted for in some way to give the viewers an understanding ofwhat's to come next for them. Despite some cliché moments and a lack ofcomplex editing and green screen work, the movie's content makes up forsome of its technological shortcomings. All in all, despite what othersmay say, this movie is a great entertaining feel good family movie andI would suggest going to see it.
Overall enjoyed the film, but more serious tone than expected - a little "dark" at times. Watched with 6 year old and she was entertained, although some mild physical violence and language which may not be appropriate for all young kids.
Constructed like a rattling Santa sack of stocking stuffers, most of them plastic, doled out with little confidence about what adults want from a jingle-bell comedy (we want Elf!), and even less about what engages a kid (they want Elf!).
Fred Claus is the perfect post-millennial holiday film. It's funny, smart, wicked, warm, and above all, completely clued-in to our growing crass commercialization of Christmas.
It is a joyless rehash of old plots and jokes. File "Fred Claus" under lump of coal.
For adults (kids have different criteria) enjoyment of "Fred Claus" isgoing to be completely down to if you like the character Vince Vaughanhas been peddling since "Swingers". You know that guy. Selfish, crass, loud, brash and supremely confident. If you don't like that character, stay away. "Fred Claus" ain't gonna be for you. However, if you do like that character, and I do like Vince Vaughan anawful lot, "Fred Claus" is a really enjoyable movie. Yes, there is aheadlong lurch into sentimentally towards the end (de riguer for anyfamily comedy?), but most of it is scurrilous and funny and silly.Plenty of entertainment for kids (I particularly liked Santa's ninjabodyguards), adults (the sibling support group joke is really funny)and film fans (the nod towards Kevin Spacey's role in "SupermanReturns").Or if none of that is interesting enough, you could always just ogleRachel Weisz and Elizabeth Banks. I know I did.
This review is from: Fred Claus (Amazon Instant Video) Overall a good movie. Not an all-time great, but fun to watch. I would recommend to those that haven't seen it.
This review is from: Fred Claus (DVD) Excellent family Christmas movie. Storyline and acting is far above the norm for this type of movie. A keeper!! Rented it first then decided to buy for future Christmas viewings.
I don't know how widespread this practice is, but it seems like every movie review I see on Yahoo is full of fake review designed to make the movie look better. I mean, c'mon, look at some of the reviews. Straight A+'s and a review that sounds like a description written on the DVD jacket?Mediocre movie. Not bad. Amusing for parts. Fails at some things. Personally, I think physical comedy is plain stupid, but hey, we all like different things. Fairly lighthearted comedy. Should be an alright family film. A+? No way.
This review is from: Fred Claus (Amazon Instant Video) I watch it every year. Who doesn't love Santa. It is so enjoyable and it has a message regarding naughty and nice.
The best children's stories are the simplest, and this one's a complicated mess.
Here's the newest entry in that curdled genre, the I-Hate-Christmas movie.
The actual effect of films such as this, however, is to put you in an entirely non-Christmas, non-joyous and non-charitable mood.
I saw a sneak preview of this today at a military installation andthoroughly enjoyed it. Yes, Vince Vaughn's character can get a littleannoying, but I think that's kind of the point.Throughout the movie, we are shown the brother of Santa Claus who iseveryone's favorite and most emphatic love, and his own brother HATEShim! Okay, hate is a strong word. When asked, Fred actually says, "No, Idon't hate you. I just wish you had never been born." Then we arepresented with a mother who's sole reason for being is to adore her sonNicholas while working overtime to make Fred feel like dirt on hershoes. This is very much a guy with self-esteem and family issues. Hislife is in the toilet and he has no real ambition beyond "get richquick".It is through a series in interactions not just with his brother(though he is a big part of it) but with the elves, his parents and hisgirlfriend that he comes to realize what a waste his life has reallybeen. It is also the same time he realizes he hasn't really been thebrother he promised he'd be.As much as I am trying to avoid saying too much about the movie, Ireally feel my favorite scene was in the room full of siblings offamous people. Wow, was that funny! "He's not Alec!!!!" Don't go tothis looking for any award winning moments, though I will say therewere a couple times I got a little emotional. This is Christmasentertainment with a wonderful cast and well-written script. The NorthPole sets were beautiful and elves hilarious. As much as I enjoyed "TheSanta Clause", I enjoyed "Fred Clause" more.Go see it and take the kids. There's nothing in it that is too racy. There's a message in there too and everyone will love the movie. In theend, we are left with a good Christmas-y feeling. The only reason I rated it nine out of ten stars is because for a shorttime in the beginning, it seemed to drag a little bit, belaboring thepoint that Fred was a loser who cared for no one but himself.
This creative movie is a delight to watch. A new idea is developed intoa film that concludes with warmth, heart, and wholesome moral values.Vince Vaughn, Paul Giamatti, Kathy Bates, and Kevin Spacey areexcellent, and their talents are well utilized. The movie is funny andenjoyable throughout, with a loving yuletide spirit at the end that istruly moving. The set is beautifully constructed, and the fantasyinvolved throughout the movie is well done. Yes, one must suspenddisbelief, but that is part of the fun and to be expected in any movieabout Santa Claus (and his brother). Many people will relate to theoriginal problem that created tension between them. My ten-year-oldgrandson loved it, as did his grandpa and I. It is this season'sholiday classic.
This review is from: Fred Claus (DVD) OMG, this movie was so funny. Its clean enough for the kids to watch but funny enough where I enjoy it as well.
If Vaughn is trying to test the family-film waters without abandoning his core audience, it doesn't work here.
Veers awkwardly from shrill, slapsticky physical humour to diabolical meanness (courtesy of Spacey as an efficiency expert) to reheated, snuggly sentiments about the importance of love and family.
Come back Tim Allen, all is forgiven!
