In Detroit, when the beloved citizen Evelyn Mercer is murdered in a store heist, her four dangerous stepsons come to her funeral. Bobby Mercer, Angel Mercer and Jack Mercer join the regenerated ex-union leader Jeremiah Mercer, and they decide to investigate the murder. They disclose that her execution was intentional, and resolve to find the criminals by themselves.
Four Brothers is just pure exhileration and a whole lota fun. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson, Andrre Benjamin aka Andre 3000, and Garrett Hedlund as four adopted brothers from Detriot who come back to get revenge on the people who murdered their money in a convenience store robbery. This movie has it all. I mean good acting all around, which is important in this kinda movie because one of the main themes of the movie is teh ties of brotherhood, which are shown here to be very strong, and it makes the characters more interesting to see them react like brothers to the things they do. But not only is the acting good, but Jonh Singleton has an eye here and gets everything right. The photography is very good and it looks liek detriot, and teh weather really adds to teh whole movie as well. And being a revenge picture, u have to have a fair share of action, and this movie delivers well. The 1st is a car chase, which is very entertaining, and the nxt is a shootout at their moms old house, which is shot in a very hyperkinetic way and it works really well. Over all the elements here are blended perfectly to make for wat i consider the best revenge flick ive seen.
yesss sooo like a lot of other people who saw this movie, i was reallysurprised by how good it was. it was an all around solid movie. ithought it was going to be a rather story-less action flick, so i wasquite pleasantly surprised, walking out of the theatre. i'd recommendto pretty much everyone, except people who don't enjoy seeing peoplebeing shot; there is rather a lot of that :P. did anyone else find that when jack stuck his head out of the showerwhen they were all (except jerry) chilling in the bathroom, that he wasreally really hot? ahaa cause i thought he was. extremely so. anyway it's a solid movie, go see it.hope there were no major spoilers in there.
John Singleton, the director of the excellent "Boys in the Hood", hasfallen far. "Four Brothers" is rubbish.Even worse, it is forced, contrived rubbish. Dumb-ass premise sees fouradopted brothers return to the town of their upbringing to attend thefuneral of their murdered foster mother. While hanging out and openingold wounds, they decide to take the law into their own hands and findthe murderers. Not exactly original, but it is the treatment of thematerial that sucks the biggest. The opening prologue, where Singleton introduces the boys' mother andbusts his gut to show what a good Samaritan she is, is pure, sickly, badly written melodrama. The scenes following the funeral, in which weare given flashback snippets of the boys' interactions with theirmother while they are tucking into a giant Thanksgiving turkey, arenauseating. It is clear so early on that Singleton's structure isunworkable and his approach is horribly miscalculated.Another major irritant is the godawful music and unoriginal use ofsound. The result is a flat, unconvincing, superficial piece ofHollywood junk. It is sad to see the talented Singleton succumbing tosuch puerile, artificial nonsense. There are a few violent sequences, but none of these cancel out thedamage done by the film's total lack of realism and heinous resortingto the most whipped-to-death cinematic clichés.Awful.
all i have to say is wow!!!!!!!!!!!!! this was the mostamazzzzzzzzzzzzzing movie everr!!!!!!!! the action was crazy and thecharacters were even crazier!! this movie is serious yet hilarious atthe same time and i was interested and got really into it the secondthe movie started! it was as good as i thought it was going to be! evenbetter! Mark Wahlberg as "bobby" was the best of all 4 brothers! atleast i thought so! he was the leader of the group and he made splitsecond choices and never cared the consequences! not to mention, he wasjust hillarioussssssssssssssssssssss straight up! i was laughing sohard hes too funny! i think personally Mark is what made the movie whatit is! but all the actors did an amazing job and i don't think i canthink of any other actors to play the brothers except them! the plotwas awesome, the action was nuts and i don't think iv ever been sojumpy in a movie before! i was literally jumpin out of my seat! i lovedthis movie so much and i cant wait till its out onDVD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good movie, and deserves a solid 7. From the first to the last scenethe movie kept you engrossed, with the 4 brothers excellently casted,in a movie about loyalty and revenge. These are brothers you would notwant to get the wrong side of.The movie moves along with the generally fearless and ruthless brothers(and also witty), seeking out a rampage on underground Detroit in orderto find out who killed there adopted sweet mother. Meeting some badguys along the way, including the ruthless gang lord Victor Sweet, themovie contains some excellent scenes, including an excellent car chasein the snow.
Ughhhhh...Went into this with no expectations, just hoping to have anentertaining 2 hours, but alas, not to be. The acting wasn't awful, butit seems as though the actors had ZERO script to work with! The dialogand premise were silly, the directing and editing were awful, and thewhole film was just plain dumb. There were very few tense moments, and even they seemed shabby andcliché. I think you can do a lot better at the movies this weekend, andI hope you choose to spend you 10 dollars elsewhere!Mark Wahlberg was bland and unbelievable, Andre (3000) Benjamin waseven worse, and the other 2 actors were barely even blips on the radar.john Singleton has proved himself to be way better than this!
There are not many action movies that can really sink in to me; past a level of plain 'enjoyment'. The story line took over the movie, and surpassed the action, in my humble opinion. Four adoptive brothers, each with his own troublesome past, were adopted by a 'well know' foster mother in a very bad neighborhood. She adopted the boys that everyone doubted. Their mother is murdered in a grocery store incident and the town shuts down in a typical "noone saw a thing" attitude. Suddenly the Mercer brothers are back, Bobby, Angel, Jeremiah and Jack, together for the funeral... After the mourning, it's time to find out who killed Mom. The movie has heart pumping scenes of car chases and shoot-outs in the middle of the street. Gangster angst and big cars. Action packed, it is, but let us not miss the relationship of these Four Brothers, with their mother and the impact their love has on those around them. This movie surpassed my expectations. This cast came together in a believeable family-mix. I am no hollywood expert, but it is clearly evident to see the bond these four must have made during the movie! The language was a little rough. Therefore, placing this on my "Do Not Watch With Mom" list. =) 4.5 stars (2.5, if mom's in the room).
Red Eye was absolutely amazing. Rachel McAdams performance in thismovie was outstanding and I loved it. Cillian and Rachel did so greattogether that I want to see it again and I am going to pay the overpriced ticket to do so. Simply Amazing. I love the way Rachel McAdamsis so diverse when it comes to her acting and she can play any partthat she wants an she can do it beautifully. Cillian Murphy was greattoo. He was very convincing in the movie an I really believed that hewas a crazy man. I loved loved loved Red Eye. Absolutely wonderful.Iwas scared for Lisa (Rachel McAdams) but at the same time I knew shewould get out of it. I loved the bathroom scene, that made me jump.
I may be stupid but I enjoyed this movie enough to recommend it to myco workers; and to take time to comment on it. I have read some of thecomments; This is a movie not real life (thankfully) I loved this movieand yes there are some holes in it; but the actors are so good that theyou only think about the holes for a minute; the action is not too overthe top; I am probably one of the oldest people to comment on thismovie; but there is so many "good" movies that I consider junk; thismovie kept my interest the whole time. I am not a fan of any of theactors, but I like them a lot better today. These are three hot headsand a wanna be (Jerry); who react naturally when something they lovehas been taken away. Stop thinking that this is a black movie and seeit as a "family" movie. As far as the sound track yep! gotta get it. Ididn't go to see it for perfection I went to see it for entertainmentand I got my money's worth
The movies today are so much different then the older ones. Lol itsalmost like video games. Everything is declining. The good ideas weretakin already, so everything now is just a remake with better video.Only they still cant make it good. Well I thought this movie was prettydamn decent. Everything I expected came outta this movie. The brotherswere hilarious with each other. They were great when it came to theirroles in the movie. The only thing i think they lacked a little was theemotional part of their mothers death. But I don't know, I'm not in mythirties and my mom is still alive. Lol. Other than that the movie wasgreat. More than just entertaining. Anyways, its worth a trip to themovie theaters. I might even go again with some friends tonight.Definitely gonna get the DVD. see ya.
"Four Brothers" is a kind of urban Western with a straightforward revenge theme. Four grown brothers who were adopted by Evelyn Mercer (Fionnula Flanigan) when they were delinquent youths reunite in Detroit for their mother's funeral. The eldest is Bobby (Mark Wahlberg), a lone wolf with street smarts and a real violent streak. Jeremiah (Andre Benjamin) is a family man with plans for a business who stayed in Detroit. Angel (Tyrese Gibson) is an ex-Marine. And the youngest is Jackie (Garrett Hedlund), an aspiring musician who lacks the toughness of the others. Evelyn was shot to death in a convenience store robbery. But when the brothers find out that her murder may have been premeditated, they set out to find out what happened and to avenge their mother's death. As the brothers rampage through their way to the culprits, police Lieutenant Green (Terrence Howard) is conducting his own investigation. "Four Brothers" seemed to me a relentless violent rampage in which no one's behavior was redeemable or made any sense until I realized the film's structure and themes are similar to that of a classic Western. The brothers represent vigilante justice in a story about revenge, corruption, and a violent battle of wills and wits between 2 opposing forces. It's a masculine tale in which men fight over a wrong done to a woman, Evelyn, who remains foremost in their memories. Assuming you don't mind that the protagonists unquestioningly embrace brutality as their method of operation, whether the situation calls for it or not, the trouble is that the brothers lack depth and are completely devoid of ethics or any code of conduct. They think of no one but themselves and their own loss, which sets this apart from Westerns. Mark Wahlberg shows off his star quality as the leader of the pack. Tyrese Gibson is undeniably charismatic. Outkast member Andre Benjamin is certainly a convincing actor. Director John Singleton draws on 1970s cinema for the visual style. But these characters are only sporadically thoughtful, and their actions, no matter how hair-raising, are not interesting. There is a glaring error in the brothers' ages. The youngest, Jackie, was adopted at age 16. Bobby is at least 10 years older. The boys could not all have been in Evelyn's household at the same time. That may be a casting problem, not a script problem, but it's sloppy. The DVD (Paramount 2005): Bonus features include 4 featurettes, 9 deleted scenes, a theatrical trailer (2 ½ min), and an audio commentary by director John Singleton. "The Look of The Brothers" (10 min) talks about creating the look of winter in Detroit in Hamilton, Canada and Evelyn's house on a soundstage with director of photography Peter Menzies, Jr., production designer Keith Brian Burns, and costume designer Ruth Carter, among others. "Crafting Four Brothers" (10 min) interviews writers Paul Lovett and David Elliot about the characters and the action sequences, and John Singleton talks about the brothers' relationships. In "Behind the Brotherhood" (9 min) producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and the cast talk about Singleton's direction and each other. In "Mercer House Shootout" (4 min) special effects supervisor Neil Trifunovich explains how he created the shoot-out sequence. In the audio commentary, John Singleton provides a scene-by-scene comments on the choices he made, including technical details, performances, story, and editing. Subtitles for the film are available in English and Spanish.
Finally a story that is about family, and the importance of such. Great action sequences gave this film an edge over many of the other films that we saw this year. While watching this movie you really felt for the characters, and were really wanting them to catch whoever killed their beloved adoptive mother, although they go about it in the wrong way, you still had a sense of urgency. Very violent, profainity throughout, but with this kind of material..would you expect anything less???Really great movie for those that enjoy action with a real story attached to it.
Pretty often a bad movie has a bad rating on this site after enoughpeople have seen it. This is not the case with some of the really badaction movies, especially the ones that contain some decent action butbesides from that are completely worthless. This is the case with Four brothers, the story makes no sense, and theacting is very poor. Usually I am one of those that has to finishwatching a movie no matter how bad it is, just to see if it might notimprove somewhat, but this movie was so bad that I actually had to turnit of halfway in. And no, I am pretty sure it did not get any better.(For the record, I did not even turn of "the stone merchant" (for thoseof you who have seen it), but painfully watched the full movie theother day. Something which surely must tell you how bad a movie must bebefore I turn it off.
John Singleton's latest is a decent enough time passer & a remake to the John Wayne film, "The Sons Of Katie Elder".The Mercer boys, four adopted brothers return home to pay their respects after their mother has been gunned down in a grocery holdup gone bad. The oldest Mercer wants to know what happened at the crime scene & upon looking at some of the evidence, he quickly comes to the conclusion that his mother's death was no accident. The four boys band together to find who, how, & why their mother was senselessly murdered."Four Brothers" has a decent premise, but, I didn't find the characters very likable. The four boys are pretty obnoxious, & seem like royal pains in the as*es, throwing smack at the local detectives, barging into places looking for clues or questioning possible suspects. There are also quite a few loopholes in the film. From looking at the store security tape, to shooting a possible suspect, to the final fight at the end, these brothers would have been doing some long hard jail time if this was reality. The premise of the film is what kept me watching "Four Brothers". I was guessing as to why the mother was killed & how the movie was going to turn out at the end. "Four Brothers" is definitley rental material or catch it when it comes to "Starz".
This movie just wasn't very good, and the current rating of 7.1 willslowly decrease as more sensible people vote on it. The plot was silly, the acting was mediocre, and the directing was surprisingly under par.Think for a second about the climax where Mark Wahlberg (who must havebeen hiding in the snow, or dropped from a plane) comes out of themiddle of nowhere, bouncing menacingly to ridiculous hip hop music, andengages the "bad guy" in a fist fight. Accepting for the time beingthat he came out of nowhere and that's o.k., why oh why would thewahlberg character give his mother's murderer the chance for a fairfight. Also, how about the very first scene where the two hoods rob theconvenience store. We learn later that they were sent therespecifically to murder the old lady. But in the first scene of themovie, the two hoods don't even know the woman was there until shescreams. The idea is that we will be surprised later on when we findout that she was assassinated. That's just cheap. Now I'm not sayingthis movie was a total piece of crap, but the problems I've mentioned(and there were many more), are common in B action movies, which iswhat Four Brothers is. It's just disguised as something different.
I had high hopes for this movie when I first wanted to see it. And Ididn't get to see it until about 8 months later, after I borrowed itfrom a friend. Now, I know like any other action movie-goer, I wanted aGOOD action movie with a brain and not just mindless slaughtering. Thismovie did an excellent job of putting both together in a satisfyingway, but took the mindless out of anything. The mixed emotions one getsfrom this movie is spectacular, and you don't realize how much emotionthere was until after you see the movie. One scene you'll be laughing, perplexed, fixated, angry...and the next, you'll be sad, crying, happy, and just overall cheering for a movie about four brothers trying tobite their mom's killer in the --metaphorical--ass.
I just watched this movie on DVD had it for a while and finally decided to watch it. I thought it was pretty good the acting was kinda shaky in spots but overall a decent movie. Mark Wahlberg was good and so was Tyrese as well, Andre Benjamin acted well for a guy with little experience but he still needs work. I am from Detroit Mi so the movie was filmed almost entirely here. The plot was very good and the dialogue was good also. I give this movie 3 stars and I would recommend for people to get this DVD.
This review is from: Four Brothers (Special Collector's Edition) (DVD) Great drama all the way thru with interesting twists and turns thru out. This movie also has a great ending not always seen in a lot of movies.
A kind old lady is murdered in cold blood one snowy night in aconvenience store. It seemed like the usual stick up by racist hoodlumson the hard streets of Detriot, and that the lady was collateraldamage.Four orphaned brothers of the hood are brought back together to mournthe loss of their foster mother. We see the Mercer brothers Bobby,Angel, Jeremiah and Jack, bond together as they try not to openly weep. But deep down inside, they know the police can't do much to help acovered-up investigation, and swear sweet revenge upon those involvedin the killing.I was expecting loads of gun battles and intense action, but this moviesurprised me with its witty moments instead. There weren't muchwham-bang action, but the one which stood out was the ambush on theMercer house, and the car chase sequence along frozen streets. Thescript was mildly intelligent with its weaving of the brothers'dalliances with the hoodlums, contract killers, government officers, and with crooked cops, bringing them all together for an interestingfinale. The last Mark Wahlberg movie I saw was The Italian Job remake, andhere, Wahlberg reigns as he personifies the cocky hotheaded BobbyMercer. Andre Benjamin seemed somewhat muted too, after his recentscreen stint as a flamboyant and trigger-happy gangster in Be Cool.Perhaps it is his role as the family man which adds that extradimension and difference between him and the rest of the brothers - hecan't be as carefree or act with total disregard as he has people whodepend on him. This film also makes no apologies in adding that bit of realism to itsdialogue, with street language and cursing aplenty, with plenty ofstereotypical characters. But all in all, it's an enjoyable flick, as we observe in silent glee, the four brothers exacting revenge with R&B music humming along in thebackground.
This review is from: Four Brothers [HD DVD] (HD DVD) Editorial ReviewsAmazon.comBound by love for their slain adoptive mother, the brothers in Four Brothers form a unique quartet that gives John Singleton's film a razor's edge of redemption. It's a thin edge, to be sure, because while Singleton's urban Western pays homage to the Blaxpoitation films of the '70s (as he did with his remake of Shaft), it walks a fine line of credibility with a mythic vengeance plot (recalling John Wayne's 1965 hit The Sons of Katie Elder) that endorses violence as the last resort of a family under siege. When a saintly foster mother (Fionnula Flanagan) is gunned down in a convenience store, her only adopted sons (two white, two black, played respectively by Mark Wahlberg, Garrett Hedlund, Tyrese Gibson and Andre Benjamin) go after the killers, only to discover that their mother's death was not a random event. As they uncover a sticky web of criminal activity involving a local kingpin (Chiwitel Ejiofor), the character-driven plot races toward an inevitable showdown, with ex-con Wahlberg leading the way. Making excellent use of blue collar locations in Detroit, Singleton keeps the action moving fast enough that the film's lack of realism is easily ignored, and the well-drawn characters (including Terrence Howard as a tenacious detective) lend emotional dimension to an otherwise familiar revenge scenario. Four Brothers is manipulative, but it's filled with grace notes of rugged working-class humanity, and it definitely holds your attention. --Jeff Shannon
