Forrest Gump

The story follows the life of low I.Q. Forrest Gump and his meeting with the love of his life Jenny. The film chronicles his accidental experiences with some of the most important people and events in America from the late 1950s through the 1970s including a meeting with Elvis Presley, JFK, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, fighting in Vietnam, etc. The problem is, hes too stupid to realize the significance of his actions. Forrest becomes representative of the baby boomer generation having walked through life blindly.

The interaction between Forrest and Jenny

The relationship between Forrest and Jenny strikes a cord with mebecause it is a relationship between a guy who feels inadequate and thegirl of his dreams. Unfortunately for most guys, that first girl hefalls for is often not in love with him. She likes him, but does notlove him. In that situation, most guys feel inadequate, unable to feelworthy of that girl and yet are unwilling to just let it go. Forrestloves Jenny. He tries to prove that to her and do the best he can withwhat he has got. This is a story about that search for love andapproval. A story where guys can identify with that search, putthemselves in Forrest's place, and long to be with Jenny. Along theway, Forrest passes through the history of America from the 50's on tothe 90's and plays a part in that history.

He always playedcharacter very well, but this one was just great. And i've also got to say, that Sally Field and Gary Snise are the bestsupporting actors i ever watched. They are also very well.I love the Forrest Gump's script. It's very good!! And the direccion waspretty good too. Finally, i think Forrest Gump show us the american way in his best andgreatest form; and this movie make us think about what is really importantin life. God bless Forrest Gump!

A beautiful story.I can see why it won 6 Oscars.

Forrest Gump is a heartwarming tale about a very different man who justwanted to fit in.Seeing his story throughout the movie made me think"wow, this guy was some guy".Forrest Gump was marvelously played by TomHanks who i'd only ever seen (well, heard his voice) in Toy Story.Ithought it was funny that he was telling random people at the bus stophis life story.I'm glad that they didn't ignore him.Robert Zemecksdirected this movie very well because it made perfect sense.I lovedForrest's confidence that he could do anything if he tried. It was sucha lovely story,it made me cry,and i'm not that emotional when it comesto movies. The supporting cast was great as was the set design and thepicture.Forrest Gump is fantastic and remember, life is like a box ofchocolates because it's true, you don't ever know what you'll get.Thanksfor that phrase Forrest.10/10

A whopper of a movie which touches you in more than one way!

This truly is one of the best movies I have ever seen. At first I was a bitreluctant to see it because it is a long movie and because I usually likeaction movies much more, but I never regretted seeing thisfilm. It is touching and warm, yet never over cooked. It's dramatic andsentimental yet never to an unbelievable degree. It's funny without losing its credibility or ridiculing America'shistory.Forrest Gump simply is a movie which not only entertains you but which alsomake you feel good.Highly recommended!

An Ode to Joy

This is my third viewing of 'Forrest Gump'. The first time I wasunimpressed; the second time I had a concussion (rollerblades: too muchspeed: car) and cried as soon as I saw the feather ; this time I only haveacold. And this movie blows me away even more.As a native southerner, I'm sensitive to 'South/Idiot' allusions inpopularmedia, and instinctively braced myself for either sentimentality orstupidity as that feather began its gorgeous journey.Robert Zemeckis has created a masterpiece. Each aural allusion toBeethoven's 9th Symphony is APPROPRIATE, amazingly enough. And that's all I've got to say about that.

Don't waste your time with this stupid movie.

Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has an IQ of 75 and plays a role in many aspectsofAmerican history, everything from Elvis to Watergate to the smiley face tothe integration of the University of Alabama. The message of the movie isthat if you are stupid and you always do as you are told, then great thingswill just fall into your lap. The movie is beyond farfetched. The movieisabsolutely ridiculous and unbelievable. The basic premise of the movie isludicrous. There is no way to make it work. This movie is a real insulttothe intelligence of the viewer. Tom Hanks is totally obnoxious in thismovie. I never liked him anyway. The movie glorifies stupidity and treats us, the viewers, like we arestupidtoo. When Forrest's mother says Forrest is named after General NathanBedford Forrest, we see a flashback of General Forrest. When Forrest talksabout Lieutenant Dan's (Gary Sinise) family, we see flashbacks ofLieutenantDan's relatives. I understand! You don't have to show me! The moviebegins and ends with a feather drifting around, as if we are too stupid toget the message that Forrest drifts through his life aimlessly. I get thepoint! I don't need to see an actual feather! The soundtrack is irritating. The songs keep breaking into the movie in avery annoying manner. And they are so literal-minded! When Forrest isrunning, we get `Running on Empty.' When Forrest goes home, we get `SweetHome Alabama.' When Jenny (Robin Wright) walks out a door, we get `Don'tYou Love Her As She's Walking Out the Door.'Forrest's mother (Sally Field) does something absolutely despicable to keepForrest in a school for which he is clearly not qualified. Are we supposedto admire Mrs. Gump for her devotion to her son? I do NOT admireher! The movie never even tries to explain how a person with an IQ of 75 somehowmanages to graduate from high school and college and join the military.Themovie expects us to simply accept this fact without question. And whathappened to Jenny's sisters? The movie mentions them once and thenconveniently forgets all about them. The only good thing about this movie is Gary Sinise. He plays a believablecharacter and gives a good performance.

Forrest Gump Rocks The Boat

I must say that one of the best movies I've seen in the past ten yearshas got to be Forrest Gump. The writing alone is more than anythingthan I could have thought, even after hearing so many people quotingthe movie and Forrest. As far as acting goes, Tom did a wonderful jobas Forrest. However, I must admit that sometimes Forrest's narrationgot slightly annoying. Nevertheless, all of the actors in the film dida wonderful job. A particularly surprising performance by the Actressthat played Jenny sticks out in my mind. The editing was good, although I think it could have been slightlyshorter. But there isn't enough wrong with the editing to complainabout. The characters were all made to immediately grasp the audience'sattention, which is what happened moments after they were introduced.None of the music really sticks out, but it definitely wasn't anythingto complain about. The overall mood of the film, though, is what reallyhelps bring it together. I was half afraid I might let a tear slipclose to the end of the film; not really because Jenny dies, but morebecause of how happy Forrest is just having the life that he does withhis son. And as he flashed back to the scenes on the boat, in Vietnam, and his running as he looked at the different skies at different timesof day, I realized the beauty that the film makers were trying tocapture through the eyes of this slightly retarded man.All in all, I could really not ask for much better of a film.

The American Dream meets the American Nightmare

Two people, Forrest Gump and Jenny Curran, form an unbreakable bond aschildren. Forrest, although lacking in the brains department, managesto witness and play his part in some of the greatest events in Americanhistory. He meets JFK, wins the Medal of Honor in Vietnam, and managesto accidentally start the Watergate investigation. Forrest lives theAmerican dream whereas Jenny lives the American nightmare; she has anabusive father and grows up to have a string of abusive boyfriends, works as a stripper, takes narcotics and ultimately contracts AIDS.Despite the pair going in completely different directions in life, theyare still drawn to each other and Forrest and Jenny's story is one thatwill make you smile, laugh and shed a tear.Every once and while, you see lists of the worst films to win BestPicture Oscars, and usually Forrest Gump makes that list. I think thereason for this is that we live in quite a cynical world and themajority of people do not really warm to lead characters that areinnocent and pure of heart. This should not be the case. We shouldadore characters that are completely honest and very insightful despitetheir low IQs, and Forrest Gump is one of those characters that weshould love. People who watch this film should check their cynicism atthe door and just enjoy a film that is about the everyman battling theworld using only truth and a deep-seated sense of what he believes isright. After all, this film has a noble tradition, it follows in thefootsteps of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It's A Wonderful Life. IfFrank Capra were alive today, he would make films like Forrest Gump (ifhe could come to grips with all the CGI) and that's all I have to sayabout that…

One the greatest Films of all times

I remember when this film first came out back in the early 90's.Forrest Gump who is not to bright became apart of one of the mosthistoric events in the world without him really realizing it. itdramatic....its funny.... and such an inspirational film. I remember atthe end of this movie when it was still in theaters everybody startedclapping cheering getting out of there seats and clapping and cheering. This film is a cult classic. One of tom hanks biggest acting roles thatmade his career. Sally fields had an amazing acting role as beingforest gumps mom. This Film will go down to one of the most greatestfilms that ever came out

Redundant, Sentimentalist Crap

For the life of me I will never understand the popularity of this movie.Itis nothing more than a tedious, painfully melodramaticmess. The entire film is based on a gimmick that is repeated ad nauseum untileventually I just wanted to chew off one of my hands instead of watchinganother minute. That gimmick consists of inserting Forrest into anhistoricevent and watching him emerge triumphant. That the film repeatedly hasForrest living through (and becoming a hero in) the most tumultuous timesinrecent American history---Vietnam, segregation, the Cold War, etc.---is aninsult to the people who lived through those times. To say that Forrest, with all his moronic wisdom, is smarter than those who actuallyexperiencedthe event into which Forrest is digitally inserted is nothing short of anaffront to America itself. One of the greatest tragedies in its Oscar sweep is that "Gump" won forBestEditing over "Hoop Dreams," a movie culled from over 300 hours of footage."Hoop" is riveting for every minute while "Gump" drags on and on withsuperfluous scene after superfluous scene. Could that "Forrest runningbackand forth across the US" have possibly been milked any longer? This lasts15 minutes with no reason except to portray the passage oftime. And as for Forrest's "soul mate," Jenny, this little slut is a despicablecharacter who abuses Forrest throughout his entire life, both mentally andemotionally, and shows him nothing but disrespect. This character doesnotdeserve our sympathy, she deserves our contempt."Forrest Gump" is woefully, abominably bad. Its main gimmick is cute thefirst time you see the movie, but after one viewing the entire facadecomescrashing down to reveal a redundant plot, mediocre acting (Hanks is anOscar-caliber actor, but not for this dreck; he was better in both "CastAway" and "Saving Private Ryan") and inept editing. In my opinion, this stands as the least deserving of all Best PictureOscarwinners.Rating: 2/10

All Time Best !!!

Well. When Tom Hanks is acting there is no doubt's that the productionwill be a box office hit. He is a true prodigy of our time. ForrestGump can never be told; it has to be seen in order to appreciate thismasterpiece. This movie never ages, it really gives us hope and seeingthis really makes us think what it would have been like, if the wholeworld had people like Forrest. Hanks have portrayed the protagonist inhis usual brilliant way. Since thousands of reviews have already beengiven I will not go into details; Forrest Gump can be recommended forany one who likes watching movie with a riveting theme.Forrest Gump will always remain as a true achievement in Movie Making.

A Really Bad Box of Chocolates

I usually do not write comments about films that I hate, but this filmsucked so bad that I had to make an exception. This is one of the 10 worstfilms I have seen in my life. My profound apologies go out to those of youwho loved this film, but I just couldn't stand it.Let's start with the plot, wait a minute, there is no plot. The only pointof the film is seeing a not so bright man make his way through 30 years ofhistory. Throughout his life, he fought in Vietnam, and saved GarySinise'slife, who was very unappreciative of Forrest for doing so. He becomes amulti-millionaire in the shrimp business, he wins the internationalping-pong tournament, meets 3 presidents, discovers the Watergatebreak-in,sees his mother pass away, and then wastes 3 1/2 years of his lifeliterallyrunning from coast to coast and back again. (right), and finally his oneandonly love comes back to him only because she is dying of cancer. ForrestGump has been called the best feel good film of the 1990's, but I didn'tfeel good after seeing this film, and it's $350 million in the box officedidn't inspire me to enjoy this film. The thing that surprises me the most about Forrest Gump was the fact thatittook the Best Picture Oscar, even over Pulp Fiction, and The ShawshankRedemption. Two films that are so far superior to this one that I can'tevenbelieve it. For those of you who have not seen Forrest Gump, you'refortunate.

Forrest Gump: The Overrated Movie of the Century

In 1994, a mega hit movie came out. Millions of people went to see itin theaters, and adored the lovable main character; Forrest Gump.Forrest Gump later received six academy awards (including best pictureand actor), and was even ranked as one of the hundred best Americanfilms of all time by the AFI. I pose a question to you, the reader; issomething wrong with me? Because Forrest Gump, in my eyes, is,possibly, one of the hundred WORST movies that I've ever seen. ForrestGump boasts a FAIR performance by Tom Hanks, starring as the titlerole. That, perhaps, is the best part of this movie, and it was onlypar. In terms of the story, which could be the worst part of thismovie, it is completely pointless. It may be entertaining to watch, but, in the end, it is two and a half hours of a retard (75 I.Q.)prospering in life. This could be a really great movie, but there wasno struggle involved. Forrest Gump simply had life and all of hisachievements come rushing towards him. Forrest Gump advertises the ideathat you can just slide through life effortlessly; that is not true. All in all, Forrest Gump is just a big, overrated disappointment.

Free Bird Symbolism

I was wondering if anyone else noticed that when they were kids, in thefield behind HER house when her dad was hunting for her, she prayed"god make me a bird so I can fly far, far away."(as birds did fly away)Then when he found her singing naked at the bar and they were on thebridge she asked him "do you think I could fly if I jumped?" Then whenshe was ready to dive off the hotel balcony, the song Free Bird byskynnard was playing and at the end when he was walking away from hergrave, he paused for a moment and watched the birds land in the treeabove her. The symbolism of her trying to always get away and findpeace and freedom only happened when she died and was laid to rest. Bythe way, the soundtrack cd for sale for that movie had every song on itbut Free Bird.

"Life Is Like A Box Of Chocolates..."

Forrest Gump As in the words of Forest Gumps all-knowing mother, "Life is like a boxof chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get". How true. Life isunpredictable. You never know what's coming, what will happen tomorrow, who you'll meet and what kind of influence that person will have onyour life.Forrest Gump is about a very simple, simple man. An by being as honestas one can be, and being nice to all, and just purely innocent, thisman does extraordinary things. Life hands him all kinds of strangeopportunities, some even HUGE events of the twenty first century. Somepeople say this is about an idiot becoming a rich man? No, it's about aGOOD man, a truly honest, hard-working, man-of-his-word guy, whobecomes successful through the goodness and innocence of his ways. Hecheats for nothing, and so life rewards him in great ways.We first meet Forrest sitting on a bench, where he then begins to tellhis story to the many who come to sit next to him. What a story it is.Forrest has been a football star, an army war hero of the Vietnam, ahalf-owner of a billion dollar fishing company, a ping-pong worldchampion, and a superstar celebrity runner. And he's managed two visitsto the white house, and he once met Elvis Presley. He also influencedthe creation of famous bumper stickers and t-shirts. Whew. It showswhat can come to those who just live life truthfully. And all thiswhile, Forrest pines for his one true love; his first ever friend:Jenny.Forrest Gump is full of great things. The screenplay tells anextraordinary tale, and is full of memorable lines, simplistic enoughto be understood, and subtle enough to be considered more.As Forrest journeys to Vietnam's jungles, and runs across the U.S'smany and varied landscapes, we see absolutely beautiful cinematography. All the backdrops are wonderful, especially the ones of Forest's longrun. The hilarious visual effects put Forrest into old video clips, andnever for a second do they look like a hoax. Truly great job.The acting couldn't be better. Gary Sinise is cynically perfect as LT.Dan, Forrest's commander from the Vietnam, who becomes one of Forrest'sbest friends. He's the second best of the show, really capturing theman's sardonic humor and anger. Sally Field's is great as Forrest'swise mother. She teaches him everything he needs to know, and plays thepart excellently. Robin Wright Penn plays Jenny, the girl Forrest isobsessively in love with. She plays the role well, having goodchemistry with Tom Hanks. She never yells at him, but doesn't exactlytreat him right, she almost talks stupid to him, for most of the film(until the end...). And Tom Hanks truly IS Forrest Gump, in hisgreatest role, and one of the best performances I've ever seen. Everyline is delivered with perfect simplicity. His accent: flawless. Histone, and attitude never waver. In some actor's hands, the role easilycould have become stupid. But not in Tom Hank's. He plays Forrest real, not overly stupid-sounding or slow talking. Rather...he talks a lot.Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future I,II,III) directs the timelessclassic of how great life can be. His direction ranges from war, tosporting events, to quiet scenes, to running scenes, to scenes withthousands crowded around, to scenes of old videos, and then sea-faringscenes. Only a very well-rounded director could pull all this off withthe smooth transitioning Robert does. Even with all these differentelements in the film, Zemeckis goes from one to the other, with noproblem, and no break in the flow. It's edited smoothly. He makes allthe elements of a drama, comedy, love story, and a war story cometogether smoothly. He tells the story of one man's extraordinary lifebrilliantly.Forrest Gump is the tale of one man's triumph by being honest. Maybe weshould all try it sometime. 10/10 "Stupid is as stupid does"-Forrest Gump

After all, what are films all about

This is such an entertaining story, that you should be able to forgive any faults that you have. I loved it, for the first time in my movie going experience, I was satisfied with a film from start to finish. Hanks portrayl of Gump is fantastic - those who say he is making fun of a such a horrible human condition should be shot. Gump is a unique character, his simplicity is beautifully expressed, and the way in which he talks is actually taken from the boy who plays young forrest, who talks like that. Any problem with this can only arise from the script, and still then, you're making a big deal of nothing. Just relax and enjoy - with films like Titanic around, you won't see another film like this for years.

seanster 2012-04-16 01:42:32

Stupid is this movie

On the plus side, I think I saw this movie for free, or at the most paid $1for admittance when I was in college and it was shown in the campustheater. On the negative side is everything else, most notably the movie's lack ofempathy for any of its character. Every character, not just Gump, iswalking through this movie with no goal, no destination, and no clue, as towhat the other characters are doing. Someone off-screen must've justshouted "move" over and over again, and then filmed the result. Gump goeshere. Gump goes there. Sally Field says this. Sally Field dies. And soon. The reasons behind the historical footage inserts is not to prove itcan be done but to distract one from realizing how badly the rest of thefilm had come together up until the inserts.Anyone who cheers for this movie must also resemble a box of chocolates -flat, consisting of cardboard, and soon empty of their contents.

2012-04-15 13:47:11

A whole lot more than five stars!

People like the "vile pile" reviewer underestimate the message of this warm, kind movie. Don't people like you understand that there is not always a necessity for complex messages? The message is simple, like Forrest Gump himself: "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get." Such wisdom, because it represents the sponaneoity and mystery of life. We need more people like Forrest. Sure, he's simpleminded, but he has a huge heart. And I stress "HUGE". He doesn't care what anyone thinks of him-because he doesn't know the difference, but that's what makes him so likable, because he can adapt easily under any kind of circumstance. He is never mean, stands up for the people he loves, has more determination than any one I've ever seen. He has such love, and he doesn't hold it all in. He is honest, but not insulting. There are more than enough scenes to show that Forrest is a rare spirit. Such as the little scene most people seem to have overlooked- the one when two black students are accepted into an all-white school and one of them drops her book while entering the building, and Forrest runs up to her and hands her the book. Who else would have had the chutzpah to do that? He also gives up a whole load of money to buy a shrimping boat, just because he promised his best friend who died in combat that they would have a boat someday. Most people might find this ludicrous, but I found it unbelievable. I, for one, would have never done that. And he's so modest about it, too- a quality that most people do not possess. He is also overcome by compassion and love for his best friend, Jenny. I was asking the exact same question myself when Jenny said to Forrest: "Why are you so good to me, Forrest?" Jenny leaves him a number of times during the movie, but unlike many people, Forrest doesn't become hateful and bitter. He just keeps on thinking about her and loving her. Forrest, a simple minded man, with an I.Q. of 75, holds the key to all noble, shining parts of life. I highly recommend this movie to anyone with an open mind and a love for simple, but memorable messages of life.
