Forgetting Sarah Marshall is, ultimately, forgettable, but for most of the way it's a pleasant little vacation of a movie.

Another comedy from Apatow Productions, and as I expected, it's another raunchy and funny one

I've seen a bunch of comedy films produced by Judd Apatow, and haven'tbeen impressed with all of them, but have found most of them funny. Before watching "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", I knew it was anotherproduction from him, and also knew that Russell Brand was in it. I hadnever seen him in any movies before, but first heard of him a whileago, hearing about his friendship with Noel Gallagher, who was thenstill in Oasis. Brand has become very famous in recent years, gettinglots of media attention, but is also a very polarizing comedian. Manyhate him with a passion, and you might hate me for saying this, butbefore seeing this film, videos I had seen of him online had convincedme that he was a talented guy! Anyway, I was expecting lots of laughsfrom this particular Apatow Productions effort, and I definitely gotthem.Peter Bretter is a composer in Los Angeles who has been in arelationship with actress Sarah Marshall for the past five years. Shestars in a TV show called "Crime Scene: Scene of the Crime", for whichPeter writes the musical score. However, after five years together,Sarah suddenly announces that she is breaking up with Peter, as she isnow in love with somebody else. The composer is devastated by his loss, and finds that one-night stands don't help him get over it, so hedecides to go on vacation in Hawaii. He arrives at a Hawaiian resorthotel to ask for a room, but as luck would have it, he quicklydiscovers that Sarah and her current boyfriend, Aldous Snow, the leadsinger of a rock band called Infant Sorrow, are also currently guestsat this resort! Due to this inconvenience, it doesn't look like thistrip is going to help Peter at all. During his stay in Hawaii, thingsdo begin to look good for him as he falls in love with hotelreceptionist Rachel Jansen, but the struggling composer might stillhave feelings for Sarah. This R-rated romantic comedy begins by showing us Peter as he is happyat home, just before Sarah comes in and tells him the bad news. Ididn't laugh much at this point until I saw the video for InfantSorrow's "We've Got to Do Something" come on to Peter's TV. After this,it is memorably funny when Peter learns that his relationship withSarah is over and we see his reaction to this. Many laughs quicklyfollow as we see the protagonist's struggles after this breakup andbefore he goes on the trip, which definitely includes the part where hedestroys a screen when he sees Sarah's face on it! The funny gags keepcoming during Peter's vacation trip, with his frequent encounters withSarah and Aldous, his computer conversations with stepbrother Brian, some of the people he meets in Hawaii (such as Chuck, a surfinginstructor whose beginning instructions are very hard to follow), abunch of sex scenes and lots of sex talk, etc. The laughs aren't asconsistent as I could have hoped, as there are some weaker parts, butthere are still lots of comic highlights and well crafted characters.Jason Segel puts on a satisfying comedic performance in the lead roleof Peter Bretter, and most of the other cast members are steady aswell, including Russell Brand as Aldous Snow, who is funny in a numberof scenes, one of them being the part where he helps the Darald Bradencharacter with his sex life. In addition to the humour and characters,it also helps that this film also features some beautiful Hawaiianscenery.Since this 2008 release is from Apatow Productions, it's unsurprisinglya very crude comedy. The swearing, sexuality, and nudity are thereasons for the film's R rating, and with all these elements, it'sobviously not for the kids, but just like any extremely raunchy comedy,"Forgetting Sarah Marshall" can also disgust many adults and make themthink that anyone who actually thinks it's funny must be out of theirmind! However, if you can take all the raunchiness and you tend to likethese modern-day R-rated comedies, including the ones Judd Apatowproduces, plus you're not one of the many who hate Russell Brand, whodoesn't play the starring role here but still has a lot of scenes forthis breakthrough performance of his, you just might get a lot oflaughs out of this movie, just like I did. As much as I'm sure MANYwould disagree, I do think this particular Apatow Productions piece ismuch better than "Superbad", a more popular comedy from the sameproducer, but one which I just couldn't understand the reputation of!

Some Good Laughs

This romantic comedy provides quite a few laughs and laughable situations, and the acting by the main characters is quite good. Some zany characters with minor roles (Damon the bartender and Kemo) add to the fun. Russell Brand's performance as British hip rocker Aldous Snow enlivens the fun and almost steals the show. The movie lacked something that I can't quite pinpoint, so 3 stars is the best I can give for this one. Most viewers will enjoy this one.

Walked out of this one

I can't comment on the entire move but this was bad enough in the first 20 minutes or so we walked out.

It helps that Segel is right on target as the charming nice-guy who maintains a casual vibe despite making a total fool of himself, and he has great chemistry with Mila Kunis.

just depressing

This review is from: Forgetting Sarah Marshall (Unrated) (Amazon Instant Video) As much as I liked the actors, I found this story just totally depressing and totally un-funny. No idea why this was such a big hit.

A great comedy with some depth too

I went in to this movie expecting either a chick flick or a gross-out,Will Ferrell type movie. Instead, I would say it took the best of bothand turned out a great flick for everyone. The movie is a romantic comedy that even the bro's can like. JasonSegel (Peter) plays the "lazy average dude" well, showing the hurt, desires, and frustrations most guys go through in a break up. KristenBell (Sarah Marshall) is the TV star celebrity who didn't know what shehad in her relationship till she threw it away. Mila Kunis plays thehawaiian hotel worker who eventually hits it off with Peter. She isinsanely hot and plays the chill, "guy's girl" as well as I've everseen. I hope to see her in upcoming female lead roles. Finally, RussellBrand is the hilarious British rock star who's contrasting views aboutwomen and life with Peter carry the movie well. Throw in Jonah Hill forhis always- funny awkward interactions as a side character and you'vegot a great comedy. It was one of those comedies where I actually found myself wondering,"How is it going to end?". Oh, and not to spoil anything but theDracula play at the end was hilarious. I heard Jason Segel really wrotethat song.Overall, a great movie for men and women to enjoy. Lots of laughs and awell-written storyline. 8/10.

You won't want to be Forgetting this comedy

Prior to the release of The 40 Year Old Virgin, it is likely that fewpeople knew the name Judd Apatow. Now, just three years later, thatname has become almost a stamp of comedy quality, with such films asKnocked Up and Superbad following on the heels of The 40 Year OldVirgin. Now, the Apatow steamroller moves forward with Forgetting SarahMarshall, and once again it has mined comedy gold, with lots of laughs, but also, as with many of the previous film's from Apatow's company, anice streak of sweet romance to go along with the laughs.Fogetting Sarah Marshall focuses on Peter Bretter (Jason Segel), aHollywood composer who's girlfriend, Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell), isthe star of a CSI-style police procedural series. Jason is a bit of alayabout (who also isn't afraid to walk around his apartment naked),and Sarah has decided she has had enough of him, so she is breaks upwith Peter, leaving him in a seemingly unending pool of despair. To try to take his mind of Sarah, he takes an impromptu vacation toHawaii, but quickly discovers, to his horror, that Sarah is also at thesame hotel as him, with her new boyfriend, recently on the wagonBritish rocker Aldous Snow (Russell Brand). However, while doing hisbest to avoid Sarah, Peter finds himself falling for a hotel staffmember, Rachel Jansen (Mila Kunis). As with such films as The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up, ForgettingSarah Marshall is a comedy that isn't afraid to mine the more vulgarfor comedy, nor does it shy away from some rather frank nudity, including plenty of footage of star Segel (who is also thescreenwriter). The upside is that, unlike many other sophomoriccomedies these days, the raunchier material actually produces laughs.Much of the film's best humor comes from Brand's performance as off thewall Snow. The character has lots of great scenes and lines, capitalizing on the characters seeming insatiable libido.Forgetting Sarah Marshall doesn't just provide lots of laughs, it alsofeatures an involving and touching romance between Peter and Rachel. Both Segel and Kunis have a nice chemistry between them that fuels aninvolving romance. As the film progresses, we can't help but root forthe characters to find themselves together in the end.In addition to the previously mentioned Brand, the cast of ForgettingSarah Marshall gives us both great laughs and characters we can beinvolved with. Segel proves to be relatively low on insecurity as heputs himself almost completely on display (literally). His Peter is ancharacter whose rather unassuming nature wins you over. Kristen Bellmakes the films titular character at times apparently self-involved,but also someone who has a soft spot for her ex-boyfriend. Kunis'Rachel is a character that is both no-nonsense and full of sweetness. In the end, Forgetting Sarah Marshall proves to be another winner from"Team Apatow", and belongs right next to the previous hits from hiscreative team. If you are looking for both laughs and a dash ofromance, look no further than Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Good Laughs

Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) *** (out of 4) A music composer (Jason Segel) gets dumped by his actress girlfriend(Kristen Bell) so he heads to Hawaii to get away from his heartbreakbut runs into more when he bumps into the ex there with her new lover(Russell Brand). His tears start flowing even more but that all changeswhen he meets a young woman (Mila Kunis) who works at the hotel he'sstaying at. This is another good entry in the recent trend of "grossout" comedies but it's certainly not in the same league as The 40 YearOld Virgin or Knocked Up. I think both of those films did a great jobat mixing the laughs with the more heart felt moments but I was alittle surprised that this film wasn't funnier. That's not to say therearen't any laughs here because there are a lot but just not enough tojustify the long running time. I watched the extended cut, which runs118-minutes and I must admit that I think the faults of this film arein its running time, which is just way too long. Many of the jokes justkeep getting repeated and while they're funny the first time they'rearen't the fifth time. The non-stop crying jokes are one example as arethe countless shots of Segel's penis. What really keeps the film movingare the very good performances from the entire cast with Kunis stealingthe show. Segel makes for a good lead, although I think a stronger onewould have suited the film better. The actor does a good job at makingus care for him and he handles the comedy very well. I thought Brand'scharacter was a tad bit poorly written with his "peaceful" attitudetowards women and sex. Bell is very good in her part as Sarah Marshallbut this film belongs to Kunis. I believe this was the first time I hadseen her and she certainly has the charm and charisma that really jumpsoff the screen.

If you're tired of rehashed old movies, try this one on for fun!

I am fed up with Hollywood remaking every movie of the last 30 years with whoever the flavor of the month "hot" young actor is...there are so few ORIGINAL movies out there, and this one, although maybe a common theme (boy loses girl, boy tries to win girl back, boy gets better girl), is one of my new favorites!Raunchy, yet funny, and while over the top, is pretty close to how most of us have felt at one time or another about a break-up...and that's what makes it great...Not to be watched with the kids, it is great for grown-ups who are okay with a little nudity, a lot of swearing, and some very awkward sexual moments!

Adam Tobias 2012-04-26 13:46:35

Nope, the real reason "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" is so unforgettable is that its screenwriter and star Jason Segel ("Knocked Up" and TV's "How I Met Your Mother") lets it all hang out, both literally and figuratively.

Will Be Forgetting Sarah Marshall In 10 Minutes

I knew I was in trouble when, within 15 minutes of this film starting, I had to deal with another 'John Favreau-Swingers' type of character. That means that we get to spend an hour and forty five minutes watching a whiny 30 year old guy mope around because his girlfriend dumped him. This would be tolerable for a high school kid, but not a 30 year old guy who they show throughout the film as being almost a 3rd wheel at his gf's premiers and red carpet events. he doesn't like any of the clothes she buys him, either...so you never really know why he is so devastated with the breakup to begin with. The more they flashed back to their past the more you realize what a nightmare she is....so I don't get it.But anyway, this guy decides the best way to clear his head is to go to Hawaii. Of course, his ex is at the same hotel on the same island with her new man. Basically, it's the same plot as any other 'comedy' about breakups and how people try to get over failed relationships. I guess this is the structure for Comedy 101, but the filmmakers and writers here are better than that, so the entire premise is disappointing. It's way too easy to figure out what's going to happen when he checks into the hotel, has the awkward moment with his ex and...SHOCK...there's a beautiful brunette who just happens to work at the reception desk.Since everyone is comparing this to 'Knocked Up'...there is no comparison. Everything about 'Knocked Up' was completely original and had the type of dialogue that you just didn't/don't get in American cinema. The only thing close to it was 'There's Something About Mary'.I understand it's hard to live up to that kind of standard and virtually everything they do from here on out will be a bit of a disappointment. However, this really was a major disappointment. I 'chuckled' three times at three lines that may have taken up a combined :17 of film time...and when you're dealing with an hour and forty five minutes of film time, that's a lot of dead air.I think we'd be better in comparing it to another movie....Ben Stiller's 'The Heartbreak Kid' that was equally as bad. That's a much better comparison.Hopefully I click my Kangaroo's together and wake up from the nightmare that was viewing this feature film.Just say no.

Matt Brunson 2012-04-22 15:39:36

Those afraid that the dismal Drillbit Taylor marked the beginning of the end for Hollywood wunderkind Judd Apatow can relax.

Jeffrey Chen 2012-04-22 00:06:07

For a film that's been lauded for its daring display of full-frontal male nudity, I got the nagging feeling that it actually played things pretty safe.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the best comedy of the year so far, and maybe the best movie, period.

I just went to an advance screening of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and itis just as funny as 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad. JasonSegel has crafted a screenplay that could have easily disintegratedinto an over-the-top, unbelievable, and lowbrow comedy. Instead, all ofits characters are believable and, more importantly, we really careabout them and their feelings. If you cant tell from the other Apatow & Crew movies, these guys canact with the best of them. If there has ever been a time for theAcademy Awards to start acknowledging comedies as just as good asDramas, it is now, in the time of Apatow. Yes the comedy is as filthyas ever, but the acting is just as good as almost any drama out there.I would even say that comedy is harder than Drama in that it isincredibly hard to craft characters that you feel for and believe whilestill being funny. Apatow and his friends are the kings of it. It wasevident in "Freaks and Geeks" and it has only gotten better now. Jason Segel is great and you feel for his character immensely. KristenBell plays her part as the heartbreaker ex-girlfriend pitch perfectly. At times her character, without giving too much away, is semi-tragic.Mila Kunis completely makes us forget about her days as the dumb hottieon "That 70's Show" and makes us fall in love with her character alongwith Peter. Russell Brand has the toughest job playing the ridiculousparody of a British rocker. At times he is a bit over-the-top but hegets some of the biggest laughs in the movie while retaining a bit ofbelievability. The supporting characters are just as good as they have been in everyother Apatow movie. Bill Hader, while I liked him more in Superbad, gets some big laughs as the brother who wants Peter to get over Sarah.Jonah Hill gets some huge laughs as the hotel employee who has a mancrush on the British rocker. Paul Rudd is one of the best comic mindsof our time and he is as funny as ever as Chuck/Kunu the hotel's surfinstructor. The writing and directing are both top-notch as well.If there is anything bad I can say about it, is that some of theediting jumps around suddenly and sometimes some scenes seem a bit outof place. Also there is a scene where a boom gets in the shot. Thereare a few continuity issues (towels on shoulders disappearing anddrinks in and out of peoples hands) but those are to be expected. Do not miss this movie it is the best movie so far this year!!!

I was bowled over

Most comedies are not funny to me, so I was pleasantly surprised to be amused by this. It's a breakup film, and there is full frontal male nudity at length, which also surprised me. Funny. Russell Brand seems to be coming into his own these days and he is great here. I had never heard of the other actors. The extras include some also amusing stuff such as a gag reel and a reel of one-liners. Evidently, this has developed a cult, and I can see why. I stumbled upon it by accident at the local library, of all places. Very entertaining.

Andrea Chase 2012-04-15 00:51:56

a tender comedy that isn't afraid to use the word vagina, or to strip a man naked, literally and figuratively

Lawrence Toppman 2012-04-14 15:43:50

Forgetting Sarah Marshall, shorter than Knocked Up and more focused than Superbad, tops all other Apatow productions so far.
